Before the Allied Normandy invasion of 1944, FM Rommel and FM Rundstedt debated about how to best meet it with the deployment of the Panzer divisions. Instead of compromising, Hitler got involved....well, you'll have to watch the video to find out the rest. If you watch until near the end, then you'll see how FM Rommel and FM Rundstedt could have positioned the Panzer divisions, if they each had had their way. Plus there is the actual, historical Panzer division locations before June 06, 1944.

The book "Disaster at D-Day" by Peter Tsouras is probably the best alternate historical account of what could have occurred if Rommel had his way with PzDiv placement. Also the speculation of Rommel's presence in Normandy is covered. A thoughtful and scholarly read.

One thing that almost never gets mentioned when discussing this story is the brave and heroic sacrifices made by the French Resistance. Those panzer reserves were weakened and delayed by a tremendous and costly effort, much of which came from French civilians. "The price for freedom is always high", and it's something those people risked everything for and we need to remember that.

Kia Ora from NZ Great presentation. For my 10 cents worth. German intelligence was SADLY lacking. How you could decive a operation as large as overlord & not leak anything is hard to believe. & all credit to the allies. With the deception fortitude. How you ever would hope to defend a coastline from Norway to spain ??? I often wonder how much enthusiasm caneris & Romell had in defeating the invasion ( re there involment in the Plot to kill H? With thought to defending a port, definitely in allies favor. At the time it was thought that a port would be a main focus to Capture a Necessity the pre fabrications ports were a complete suprise. Weak divisions foreign ost soldiers & invalids The H youth certainly fought hard but senseless bravery. A lot of Germany was worn by years of war by 44 . Lack of tanks re other theater's of operation. & displacement close or far, rendered unmovabal from complete air cover & lack of fuel. Also as you say rail was smashed beforehand. & the French resistance did some outstanding brave work prior to the invasion. The Navy was heavy support for at least 20 plus miles on beach heads. Good cooperating between all forces . & of course the overwhelming air support was deadly and crucial. Excuse my spelling. English is not my 1st language. Nga mihi Mac

Chris, thank you for your analysis of the Normandy Debate. It was such an interesting historical topic, that has been debated for a long time. I loved researching this, because even though I knew a lot about the subject beforehand, I found out some new facts, as I usually do, that twisted the story. The one thing that surprised me was that Rommel's invasion location was further north than I thought it was. I always though that if Rommel had his way, then most of the Panzers would be closer to Normandy. Yes, they were closer than Rundstedt would've put them, but I don't want to spoil the video for viewers who haven't seen the video. Thanks from the USA! You get a heart!

The use of horses for transport by the Wehrmacht had nothing to do with fuel shortages. It was the standard mode of transport for infantry divisions. The Wehrmacht was never heavily, or even moderately, motorized.

Scott, you're absolutely right, however the Wehrmacht did try to motorize as much as possible, but their fuel demands in the Soviet Union made them attempt to "de-motorize" somewhat while the Soviets were ramping up with Allied lend-lease trucks! Good comment! Thanks!

I think they were both wrong. If you put the panzers on the coast like Rommel wanted, naval gunfire and fighter bombers would have destroyed them. Hold them back, like Rundstedt wanted, and the allies would get foothold and build up. Rommel probably had best chance. but I think either way the allies win.
@EmersusTech
@EmersusTech 2 месяца назад
jaimepatena, I agree with you that both were wrong, although Rommel less wrong. I believe that when Rommel "wanted the Panzers on the coast", he didn't mean right there on the beach, but 2-3 miles back and hidden. Yes, naval gunfire and fighter bombers would've hurt them, but only if they were away from the Allied troops landing and if they could actually see them. If the Panzers were there on the beach, they would be mostly safe from naval guns and somewhat safe from aircraft, because they would be so close to the Allied troops. Also, Dunkirk had shown that air bombs dropped on sand aren't as dangerous as on land -- they have to be a more direct hit. Thanks for your comment! For this, you get a heart!

The only chance was defeating them on the beaches with the allies having overwhelming air superiority...the only way to negate naval gunfire advantage was to get the divisions up as close to the beach as possible so as to make naval gunfire being as dangerous to the allies landing as to the Germans. Von Rundstedt really did not appreciate the advantage of air superiority or naval gunfire because he had air supremacy in his early victories, and was not involved in the Italian campaigns.

donherion377, yes, like the Soviets in Stalingrad -- get real close to them and "hug" them, and that will stop the naval guns and fighter-bombers. It's strange that the closer you are to the enemy, the safer you are... in a way. Thanks for your good comment!

Montgomery played a master stroke at Normandy. He insisted on 5 attacks, instead of the proposed three. He also made sure the British, with there superior firefly tanks, would have a better chance against the dominant Tigers and Panthers. So tied up these heavy divisions, to let the Americans move around from the rear. Hence cutting them off.

Hong Kong Phooey, I have a lot of respect for Monty for many reasons. As with any general, he had his flaws. He really liked to make sure that everything was just ... perfect ... before attacking. He probably wanted to have the odds on his side. Nothing wrong with that. After all, he was on the winning side. Of course, he had the ability to follow such a plan. FM Rommel grabbed whatever he could get across the Med. Thank you for your comment!

Nice analysis on the dispositions. We should keep in mind that the Allies were putting a massive amount of effort into reconnaissance and would have adapted their tactics accordingly. “You can never change just one thing”. Micro-management from the rear.... always a problem, but Rommel had a reputation amongst German Commanders for being over-focused on his personal are of responsibility, without regard for the rest of the war.

@EmersusTech
@EmersusTech 2 года назад
jam cam, I mentioned that Hitler was sleeping in the video. Because Rommel asked Hitler to intervene, Hitler sided wholly with neither party and then left the release of a portion of the Panzer divisions to himself. However, the point of the video was that if Hitler had said, "Okay, FM Rommel, have it your way." Rommel still wouldn't have placed the Panzers in the correct location in order to repel the D-Day invasion. So, it didn't matter whether Hitler was sleeping or not, although it didn't help anything. The dispositions were incorrect and would've been under FM Rommel too. Thanks for watching and your comment!

Von Rundstedt was a greatly overrated senior officer. He never fully accepted the concept of a war of maneuver using armor with aircraft in support and all coordinated by radio. He once told Guderian- who had tried to explain the concept to him- that "It's all nonsense, my dear Guderian- nonsense!". His lack of understanding of this was a key reason behind his Halt order in May of 1940- and his smug refusal to resume the German advance solely because Hitler left the final decision on what it would resume up to him rather than OKH cost Germany immensely. For all his own faults (and he had his share of them), Rommel had prior experience (unlike von Rundstedt) attempting to conduct operations in the face of substantial enemy aerial opposition and was well aware that no large concentration of armor in the German rear would reach the invasion area without coming under intensive Allied air attacks. Rommel was correct in this case.

From a military perspective, Rommel was correct in wanting the panzer divisions near the coast. I realize that the Germans weren't sure where the Allied landings would be. However in the messy chain of command which included Panzer Group West, Von Runstedt who was I will say "supposedly" in cmmand of the western theater, but he also couldn't do a thing unless Hitler told him to or said to von Runstedt or Rommel it was ok to do what they wanted but often Hitler wouldn't ok their plans for days and by that time the tactical situatoin had already changed, and Der Fuhrer's ok or new orders were meaningless. So yes, the panzer divisions should have beenplaced close to the landing areas be it Normandy or Pas de Calais. The rebuilt 21st Panzer division was the only panzer division close to the beaches and for a momrnt their armor split the British landing areas in half before they were driven off by 6 pounder, (57mm) AT guns. If Panzer Lehr had been by the coast, the Allied bridgehead would have been in mortal danger.

You mention that von Runstadt was absolutely correct in his orders to counter the invasion at the beachheads. Duh ! The problem was that the German forces were too far removed from the beaches to enable an effective counterattack, secondly von Runstadt hadn't had the experience of Allied Air Power as Rommel had essentially negated his planned countermove. The Wehrmacht never had the resources or manpower needed to counter the invasion, the Allies had FAR to much combat power and the proper logistics to win the invasion battle.
@EmersusTech
@EmersusTech 3 месяца назад
Brian, please provide a timestamp of when I stated this: "Runstadt was absolutely correct in his orders to counter the invasion at the beachheads." Either you didn't watch the whole video and/or you misunderstood what you watched. I clearly stated that Rommel was correct in trying to stop the Allies at the beaches. I agree with you that von Rundstedt didn't have the same experience as Rommel with Allied airpower -- I explicitly stated that, so I'm not sure why you wrote that. The main problem was that Rommel had the wrong beaches. He was closer to correct than von Rundstedt, who was totally wrong. I don't agree with you at all. If the Germans had correctly guessed the Normandy beaches about two months in advance, hid it very well and placed their armor close -- within 3 miles of the beaches, then it would've been a slaughter of the Allies. Every new wave would've been massacred and the Germans would run the Panzers up and down the beaches with almost total dominance. Then the rest of the invasion would've been called off, etc. The problem was: Where was the invasion going to be? You could narrow it down to less likely places, but the Allies could've landed anywhere.

Pray to be saved from hell (whatever that may be). Pray for your friends and your family too, it only takes a minute or so/less at a time to pray. Do it and your life will slowly get better, or maybe quickly. It probably just depends on you and the kind of person you are/have been. Don't wait until its too late and you have to suffer the consequences of built up bad karma from immoral acts/unrepented sins. Maybe together we can help make the world a better place by changing ourselves for the better, and changing things around us for the better. And addressing/thanking the CREATOR, LORD GOD at the beginning and end of your prayers would be a good idea 😊 Or just be my friend if you don't want to say the prayer 😄 I'm trying to help you get right with the LORD 🙏 Amen. I have worded a short prayer for you to say if you are not sure what words to use, it may not be the best but here it is 😊 '' CREATOR, LORD GOD, Please forgive me and my friends and my family for our immoral acts, please help guide us in a positive direction and please help us against evil. Please save us from Hell and have mercy on our souls. Thank you CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen. '' Please say this at least once a day for at least a month, do it longer if you want to and can 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 You should prostrate yourself if you don't want to do spoken prayer, or do both 🙏😊 Please worship the LORD GOD and not any idol. Please put your hands together 🙏 bow your head and say this prayer: "CREATOR, LORD GOD, please know that I worship you and not any idols. Thank you for everything CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen" Say ' Om Namah Shivaya ' out loud or in your head 108 times, or try to do it 1008 times 😊 try to do it everyday if you want repeat this aloud for as long as you want to, try to do it for like an hour a day or say it in a prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" You can also say this prayer once a day or repeat it aloud as many times as you would like to: "Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen." Thessalonians 5:16-18 "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." "O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!" Repeat this aloud at least 3 times or as many as you want, do it everyday if you can I apologize for all the words 😊 I know how it may look
