I would like to add that the British people also objected to the racism shown by the white US soldiers because of their imperial history. Don’t get bogged down in the negative aspects of that history, of which there were many. By that time many families had roots in the colonies abroad and had worked with and been surrounded by , in fact grown up being looked after by people whose skin was not the same colour as theirs. They retained a fondness for their colonial subjects and though there may not have been many black peoples permanently living on British soil, the transient population of people of every hue was huge. From Indian Civil servants ,lawyers and soldiers to Kenyan coffee growers and merchants , servants etc British people living in Britain had been exposed to citizens of every hue. So to the British it was insulting to them to see the way the god ole boys of the South treated their black soldiers.

First Nations soldier Francis Pegahmagabow from Parry Sound Ontario had his own concept of trench raids. He would sneak into an enemy trench at night and silence the German sentries. In the mornigng the Germans would wake to find their sentries dead and all of their buttons cut off or all of their boot laces cut. That had to be hard on morale.

Apparently, in an interview for a documentary, when a pair of German veterans were asked what the deadliest anti-tank weapon to them was, they said: “USS Texas”. Another report states that the Germans knew they’d lost the war when they’d found a cake. A cake. Likely from America, Britain, or the other Allies. They’d realized, like Japan, they could not outlast America or the Allies as a whole. The Allies were replacing and building up supplies and forces quicker than Germany could. That, coupled with the assets Hitler lost from his failed invasion of Russia, showed that they were outgunned, outnumbered, and alone by the time the Allies reached Berlin.

@@EmersusTech Thanks! I was shocked too, to find an old dreadnaught like her played such an important role. Many of the men on Omaha beach, some of the worst resistance from the Germans, would’ve died without her. And she lived through two wars! The Germans should’ve thought twice about entering a gunfight with a Texan.

Less than half his age is not the issue, it’s that she was 16. MacArthur was deeply flayed. An at times brilliant general tactically , personally brave , but not a strategic thinker. Far too gifted with ego , megalomania, total lack of empathy, unwilling to listen to alternate opinions/options , did not value the soldiers and airmen under his command, a poor trainer , and personally a mediocre logistician.

I was in the Canadian Army in Afghanistan (Kandahar, Panjwai district) in 2010, some events I find funny, but for some reason alot people give a WTF ?!? 1) One day at our COP a civilian resupply chopper took some incoming rounds as it was taking off. This was early in the morning, and most of the tour had been pretty uneventful. This caused a stand-to (drop what you are doing, grap your gear/rifle and get on the wall near the attack). I had heard the shots (they woke me up and I was like that was close.... "STAND TO, STAND TO.... fuck).... anyways it was one shooter in a grapehut about 200-300 meters away. So naturally the whole fucking COP (1 infantry company basically about 120 people), got on the closest wall and shot back. We didn't have problems after that. 2) another COP a few kms away had about 3-4 mortars actually land inside their camp one day. those guys triangulated the position of the insurgents and returned fire with about 30-40 mortars. 3) another day someone got positive ID on some dudes on a dirt bike planting an IED, that problem was solved with about dozen 155mm HE rounds from M777 howitzers. 4) a couple days after that, we engage a pair trying to bury an IED near a village. We had 2 helos in the area, the door gunners expended all ammo dealing with them. We were also the only country to bring tanks to Afghanistan, and we used them... frequently.... I dunno some people think this was excessive, me it's a case of fuck around and find out.

M y father fought in Burma during WW2, with the Queens Own Royal West Kents. He and his comrades had a very low opinion of US servicemen, both soldiers and Airforce. When US units were assigned to hold the flanks alongside British and Indian units, they frequently failed in the task and the British and Indian units (which the British held in high regard) often had to regain ground which US forces failed to hold. Also when USAF were tasked to air drop supplies, they often missed the drop zone, landing the supplies in enemy held territory. other times they released cargo without parachutes, or from too low an altitude for the chutes to open. such drops scattered ammunition across wide areas, rendering items like mortar bombs unsafe to use, and other items unrecoverable or useless. My father was also scathing of the US soldiers behaviour towards the civilian populace, who also had contempt for the US troops as soldiers.
