The running footstrike pattern is one aspect of running form that is up for debate. So I want to bring my perspective as a physical therapist into the discussion. Should we be heel running or toe running?

I know you showed how to start with running in place in another recent video, but I was so sure that I had already "done" the very slow running that I didn't try it. Today I tried it and was able to "run" for an hour non-stop instead of jogging 50 yards and then walking 400 to stay below my MAF. Was able to keep my heart rate within a small window very easily. Sure, I was taking about 25 minutes to go each mile, which is slower than I walk the same distance, but being able to "run" is so much better. Always had problems with this before because I'm about 100 pounds overfat. I warmed up first, including jogging until I hit my MAF and then stopped, started jogging in place while watching my HR. I noticed it started to drop, so I started inching forward, it still kept dropping so I increased my distance between steps and viola' -- I was "running." Thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU!!!

So good to hear!!! Now your body is getting the right stimulus and hopefully over time it will adjust so you can run faster.

Midfootish type foot striker here. It works for me. Of course at higher speeds / faster paces I tend to go more towards a forefoot striking pattern.

As it should be...very nice.

Great video Justin👍 I tend to hit the outside rear edge about 1 inch from the end and rolls inwards to my big toe. Used to heel strike more but have improved my form. But once fatigue sets in its so easy to over stride when trying to maintain pace.

Agreed. So easy to go back to old habits when fatigue takes over.

i find that a poor foot strike pattern is a product of poor running form. The foot strike can be a good indicator of where to adjust cadence vs stride length for a given running speed. Also sometimes i'll try to spend more time on each foot's back stroke so i don't heel strike on the next step down.

Interesting way of putting it. Sounds like you are just trying to use more of a posterior chain dominant running form. Which is what we should be striving for anyway!

@@AverageRunningPT i didn't have a fancy name for it, but getting a good quad stretch on the back stroke should also facilitate some elastic recoil for to assist each forward drive.
