This may seem like a side quest but understanding how all movement happens in the body is the key to running better. Like the name suggests, your spine is the source of all movement. The hips and shoulders rotate around it and the arms and legs just amplify the movement.

This makes so much sense. When I run in the park, I see how so many people run differently. Very interesting to notice as I take in this info. Thank you!

Really enjoying these videos and the analogies and examples you're incorporating. Very good point regarding learning to run on a treadmill and learning kinematic through sagittal-only imaged.

1:36 and 1:47 It is not “hydraulic” (to do with liquids) but rather “elastic” (fascia - to do with a substance that stores energy as it deforms and give it back as it returns to its original shape) like you mention at 2:47. Lookup the work of Serge Gracovetsky on spinal engine on RU-vid and the work of Tom Myers (Anatomy trains - especially tensegrity is amazing), yes it’s old but highly underrated. David Weck (Weck method) teaches the movement you are demonstrating with various drills. One is to run with a football in your hands which looks exactly like the motion you are doing there. Another thing that must be said about form is this: Running form is pace dependent. Marathon pace running form differs from sprinting pace running form. One has more sway (watch Kipchoge), the other is more “back to front” (watch Bolt). What you have discussed is true and there in both cases, but how much rotation is heavily pace dependent. Thanks for linking this with barefoot running as they do belong together. Love your work, I use some of your videos to show my trainees.
