As I start running in minimal footwear after injury, I want to document what I am doing to make this process a success. How can barefoot running shoes help me with this process? I start to explain it a bit in this video.

I use minimal shoes for recovery runs for the very reasons you describe here. They keep me honest and help me maintain good form even when going super easy. Building back from a pelvic stress fracture I used an HR cap and very slowly built run frequency to a run every 36 hours. Then I very slowly built duration for a couple of months until I was back up to 50-60 mpw. At the end of that build I got asked to help pace a local half marathon (1:35 pace group). Despite not having done any fast running until just before the run, I was floored how easy it was to run that pace. I learned a lot from that.

Amazing what the body can do.

Liked before I watched for the thumbnail! :D I don't know what it is about Merrell shoes (it's likely the wide toe box you mentioned), they look incredibly comfy. I really need to try and find a pair of my own. Best part of the show review: "I can turn it into a burrito." Filed under: stuff you rarely hear about shoes! I hope your knee will recover fully soon to bring you back to normal, painfree and safe running. I wish you much patience for that!

Thank you so much for the feedback on the video! And yes...shoe and burrito usually don't go together!

After suffering from a bad case of plantar fasciitis, due to playing soccer in turf shoes that were a bit too small, I was barely able to run for over 2 years. Through a combination of MAF running in minimalist footwear, thousands of kettle bell swings, and yoga I have been running pain free for months now, and I am running more miles than I ever have before.

Sometimes the body is weird and just needs time. Good to know you are back to running well again.

I used to run in Merrell but I needed more cushioning for the longer runs. I went with Altra shoes. They have a 0 drop, have a wide toe box and good cushioning.

I use Altra all the time. Agreed that the cushioning is much nicer for longer duration.

Interesting and maybe something I now have the time to try. How long can you go with zero running before you begin to lose fitness? I have strained intercostals and finally just stopped running to allow it to heal as it was not progressing.

I have always seen that my fitness reduces to a small degree after about 10 days, but tends to recover pretty quickly. Longer than that and it starts to drop more rapidly. This is my own experience and not scientifically based.
