In this podcast episode, DARE coach Michelle Cavanaugh was joined by Barry McDonagh, the creator of DARE, wherein they discussed the prevalent issue of anxiety and its impact on individuals. They recalled a recent call they had with a health insurance consultant who revealed that anxiety disorders have become the number one concern for people across various demographics. The statistics showed that a staggering $77 billion was spent on mental health disorders in 2020, with anxiety disorder being the most prominent.
Michelle and Barry then answered a question submitted by a member of the DARE community about encouraging a panic attack to worsen when the fear of dying is present. They emphasize the importance of running towards the fear instead of trying to prevent it, explaining that panic attacks are often fueled by the fight against fear itself. By understanding that it is not the content of the thoughts that matter but rather the reaction to them, individuals can begin to diminish the power of anxiety and regain control over their lives.
They also spoke about being aware of our own crutches and the role they play. Throughout this episode, Michelle and Barry provided practical advice and encouraged listeners to implement the discussed strategies to develop their inner confidence and ultimately overcome anxiety.
We hope you find this podcast episode helpful.

The running towards technique has helped me the most. I went as far as buying a plane ticket just to return 2 hours later so i could be in a plane.

I watched my father have a widowmaker heart attack and was the only reason he survived--it was my awareness and responsiveness that got him to the ER in time and allowed him to live. I can't help but be hypervigilant for myself because of this, and whenever I experience a panic attack, I am immediately transported back to my father's incident. It's so hard to let go of fear and know that I'm not in danger in the way he was. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in this cycle

I used to sweat profusely and it ruined my social life. I was at an event and saw some other guy sweating like crazy but having a great time. Everyone was talking to him and they were all laughing and having fun. I finally said fuck it and just let myself sweat. After doing this a few times I rarely sweat in social situations. Nobody gives a shit and I spend 16yrs hiding for no reason

Thank you for this comment, I’m just now getting comfortable with the sweating lol now I just try to let it happen and not judge it. Yes, I’ve seen people sweating before and not caring about it, like teachers even and people at work and it’s okay 🙂

I black out with anxiety/panic - so i avoid a lot to avoid fainting - im 62 and was doing ok for a few years caring for my parents - they both recently died and anxiety severe and now im having shaking anxiety like ive never had before because im alone in the world and afraid to go out due to fainting possibility.......im not working and i spend my days in an anxiety state which is long and depressing.

I feel for you. Acknowledge that you have gone through a traumatic experience of losing your parents. Caring for them had kept you focus on them rather than mostly on your anxiety. Now that you are alone it can be a very very scary experience. Get all the help you can find ( many online) to widen your understanding on this topic. Be patient with yourself, it takes effort to heal. Your black out and fainting spell can be due to severe anxiety. Have a doctor check it out. As you slowly heal, the physical symptoms may go away. Be well.

So confusing - So defuse, create space, allow and don’t focus on, but also run towards. It’s no wonder people are anxious

Running towards it for last 10 years and it do nothing for me. It is stupid protection mechanism that makes you not want to live this agony anymore and end it once for all, so it not protects you in the fact. Basicly it is opposite!

Brother try an H pylori test, that thing messes you up. I started getting panic attacks and anxiety 5 months ago and had no idea why. I did a medical check up and the only thing that came up was h pylori. Turns out it can cause extra gut problems like depression, anxiety, panic attacks.

@@kamaltahir6440ever since I had h pylori my stomach never felt the same since and that created a different anxiety to be checking the stomach sensation and the “what if” it comes back. I get it check/tested every year. But then I have a functional doctor and even psychiatrist say there’s people with h pylori that never give them any symptoms. But yea it always scare me with any stomach discomfort….
