Training for the TDS at UTMB episode 2. Welcome back to our short series where we're following my progress towards my biggest race of the year the TDS! This epic mountainous ultra marathon forms part of UTMB race week out in Chamonix, France in August. In this episode I bring you along on a hilly training session trying to get my legs nice and strong for those big mountains. We also highlight how training is going, what's coming up on the series and I also talk all about the popular topic of running poles. Hope you enjoy the video and the EPIC views out on the North Coast of Cornwall!
Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

Poles are fantastic. Remember to take your hands out of the loops as you descend. A few years ago my shin bone broke when a stick got stuck and I fell and couldn't get free from the poles. Was on the Tret la Tete route, the part at Les Contamines that the TDS partially crosses.

Very sound advice 👍 It's super dangerous to stay in the loops while descending! A lot of mountain races will have signage out on route telling you so. Really sorry to here about your accident, hope everything recovered well 👍 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

Great topic as poles take some techniques and getting used to. My first time using poles was on a mountain ascend- decend trail, I was slower with poles than dead tired without them. Really helps to practice with them.

Another great review and top tips, Loyd. For long distance hikes I’ve used poles and that 3rd point of contact I found really beneficial. I’m one though that whilst I like the idea of running in the mountains the images of big fields at UTMB and those 12-14 mile congas up the climbs I am happy to watch others compete🙂 Looking forward to your travel adventures heading out to TDS!

It is a bit of a conga over the mountains at UTMB but it's a very special race. When you're in the race you really don't see it that way. Thanks for watching Paul and thanks for taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

Great tips Loyd! Seems like whenever ultras start using poles they're convinced you can't finish a vertically challenging event without them...myself included. Practice. Practice. Practice. Best mantra and the best nugget of wisdom yet! Good luck on your training and see you at UTMB. BTW I use Black Diamond Z-Fold Carbon poles.

Look forward to TDS videos Loyd! Pole training is so important. I find it takes a few sessions to get the inside of my biceps/elbow used to it. Can be pretty sore until conditioned. Poles are a game changer when deep into an ultra, even if not on a mountain. If running through the night, esp on tech or tacky terrain they will save many potential stumbles or falls as you fatigue and depth perception is affected by torchlight etc. Was an unanticipated benefit for me at least. Great vid as always! Cheers
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад

Look into using your wrist straps in order to take some pressure off your hands. It’s hard to describe, but you can really relieve your grip when using the straps properly. I e raced mountains many times, and it helps in the long haul Nice video, beautiful scenery!
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад
I always use the wrist straps if I'm in a long race in the mountains Curtis. Obviously this was just a short training session and the ups were very short so there wasn't any need. I've run and embraced in the mountains many, many times 😊 Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the views 🙏

Nice vlog and very informative. I've asked once an athlete who was running with fixed poles and he said they use them in a race where it is always ups and downs and you knida need them almost all the time. So they don't have to fold them away neither store them and always use them as well. By the way, core strength training is very important for pole using if I may add!
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад
Im pretty sure that's the reason. Once you take your poles out in the mountains you tend to keep them out, unless you come to a really long descent 👍 All runners should be working on core strength anyway, even if they're not running with poles 😊 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Naim, hope you're fit and well 🙏😊

I have the Leki Micro Trail poles. They have the glove and clip system, very easy to unclip if you want to eat etc. I really like them but they do have a low profile handle which is smooth cork. I think if I was doing a really long hike ascent like in UTMB, I'd want something that had a traditional grip shaped handle. Looking forward to you E24 film 😁
@Run4Adventure

Great advice. Never used poles myself but definitely would in a long mountain ultra. Think there's a reason why the top European athletes all use them at UTMB (exception being Kilian who rarely does, but he's always the exception!) and why otherwise amazing athletes like Jim Walmsley struggle there when they don't use them.
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 2 года назад
Even Kilian uses them quite a bit at UTMB now. They definitely make a lot of difference in the high mountains. If you're are a top athlete going for podiums, you'd be mad not to use them when everyone else is 👍 Thanks for watching mate and I hope you're fit and well 🙏😊

@@Website9 You are always going to suffer at a race like the TDS, especially when you live at sea level in the UK! I totally agree I haven't got the training under my belt that I would have like to have but I've got another two months to get a lot stronger and fitter before the race. Thanks for your concerns but I'm a big boy now and I can look after myself. I totally understand what's a head of me with the TDS, having run UTMB twice and the CCC and I'll be ready come race day. Like I said if I had any doubts I wouldn't even line up on the start line 👍

Thanks Jennifer 👍 If you head for Bassets car park on the North coast road. Once in the car park, head out on to the coast path on the right hand side as you look out to sea. You have to run about 500m and you'll arrive at the first dip! Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊

I have the UTS 100k coming up and would be lost without the poles. Chose UTS to get enough points to try for UTMB in 2023 for my 50th,. I entered the 2022 lottery on the `off chance` and got a place so I`ll be in Chamonix a year earlier than expected. You should organise a shake out run befor the event for your viewers who are attending UTMB.

Hope UTS 100 went well Ian and well done for getting in UTMB 👍 We are definitely going to be doing a shake out run at UTMB, we're just trying to sort out the day we're going to do it on? It's tricky because the TDS starts at midnight Monday and I'm not sure I'll be up for a lot of running after the race 😊

Can I ask - are running poles and hiking poles (eg. BD Alpine Carbon Cork) very different? Cheers! ;-)
@Thefifaplayeryant
@Thefifaplayeryant 2 года назад
No, basically the same. But for running you look even more for light weight and shorter packing length. I use foldable poles for running (BD distance Carbon I think) and for hiking I use more stable poles which pack a bit longer, more or less using them all the time and even carrying them doesn't irritate me when hiking. Wouldn't carry them when running, there you really need light und packable so you never need to make compromises if really needed. If you can forget them when at your pack, waist..., you will Take them and If steeper trails they are very helpful.
