The pause Louis gives in the first episode after Daniel claims that he only went to gay bars to score drugs, which, even at the time, felt like Louis was deliberating whether he should point out that he can read minds, becomes all the funnier after this episode. You hit on him Daniel!

The paramour's name is Antoinette (although it was Antoine in the books). Given that Lestat is a French vampire, it's very fitting that his two loves would be Louis and Antoinette, the royalty of his home country.

What I really love about this show is how good they are at telling such a complex and full story in under seven episodes without making me confused one second about what is happening, despite whole decades passing by

In the books, Lestat is know as "the Brat Prince" amongst other vampires. Antoinette hasn't been turned but he does keep promising her to do so. It's really interesting to see how different Lestat and Louis are at the being relatively the same age between past Lestat and present day Louis. All the writers for the series have some background or are exclusively playwrights and you can immediately tell the influence and the feel of the writing. It doesn't feel like "tv writing", you could put this on a stage and it wouldn't feel necessarily different. Of course some logistical stuff but really the money shots could be done on a stage in some way or fashion.

In the first episode, Daniel referenced the bar he met Louis in was a gay bar in SF, so yes, definitely 'gay bay vibes'. 😀 (Daniel is queer in the books, though in the show he seems to be either bi/pan or heteroflexible)

I adore both the chess scenes and Louis swimming the Mississippi mad at Lestat 🙌🏽

Lestat is a very traumatized individual; both his human life and his vampire birth were horrible, and he refuses to deal with his trauma so he keeps passing it on to everyone around him. He defaults to anger when he feels hurt or scared because he can't handle those emotions and then he lashes out. But all he wants and seeks is love, and he does adore Louis above everyone else, despite the other people he is with and he is with a lot, Antoinette (Antoine in the books) is just one of his other paramours over the course of the books but his feelings for Louis remains through-out it all... so Louis is one of many... however....out of the many he is definitely also THE ONE. Lestat basically gives off very polyamorous vibes but his soulmate is still Louis and always will be.

I totally agree with the way you breakdown the characterization of this episode. I think I remember Rice used to say that she wrote every character to be flawed and through their actions and development. you as the reader have to decide whether you can like them or be engaged by them despite their behaviors. I love all the performances and can't wait for you both to see the finale!!

I love Lestat's monologue about his past. One of the best moments in the whole season, and Sam Reid's performance is excellent.

Honestly, you two took Louis and Lestat's reunion-makeup-hate-sex far better and more calmly than most of us did.

The way I giggled when you said Lestat could fly like Superman, knowing that Daniel says that too. 🤭 Love your analyses. Can't wait to see you react to the finale. EDIT: That Claudia outfit you don't like is apparently pajamas (and so is the outfit Lestat wears for the end of ep5 😭).

Anne Rice said Louis was definitely her when she was writing the book so it was very therapeutic. And the charisma and confidence of Lestat was inspired by her husband. She says Lestat is like the James Dean of vampires. The train conductor was actually one of the producers of the show lol. Fun little fact. As far as the characters go I feel bad for them. They are turned into immortal predators with a conscious, and just have to deal with their nature & urges. Plus they have to hide their nature or here comes the pitchforks & torches. Imagine that also not sure if they are going to hell if they meet death because of what they are. Its a mindfuck but intriguing & mesmerizing.

Given vampire powers, you have ask yourself whether or not the good doctor going, "I am not here," is being sarcastic or has been brainwashed to think that way. It's cute if you think he playing dumb and aloof. It's disturbing if he is being sincere.

The only thing I'll say about season finale: it will answer some of the questions we had and raise others. It was a quite satisfying episode! Can't wait to see you guys react to it! ❤️

🙄;💭I think Lestat turned Antoinette so she could listen to Louis and Claudia's thoughts, because he couldn't hear them. (and he liked her.) 🎵After listening to the 'Come To Me' song, I like it... the music, Sam Reid's deep voice, the sentiment, It's Beautiful., But I think the 'Come to me' line is creepy because Lestat used to mentally stalk Louis saying that line when he was trying to get him to be with him... (It almost drove Louis crazy.)

➡That fight was vicious and heartbreaking!., but When Louis and Claudia was outside the window and Antoinette said I Love you Lestat, and he says it back... That had to be the 2nd worse thing I saw him do to Louis.(10:45) ~I know Louis was hurt by that!...🤨😢💔

Aw bummer, I'm sad we didn't get to see your reaction to Ep 5! I was just thinking the other day that it had been a while since I'd last seen a reaction to this show from you guys ... now I know. Man, that was an exciting episode too. Oh well. Thanks for the reaction! Yes, S1 ends at a natural turning point in the book's story ... there is a sort of closure to the show's plots up to this point.

When I first saw this I had the same reaction of the last scene as Clarus - is that a real memory or did he insert him in the dream because he is around present day. And ugh! Lestat is a classic narcisist - but SUCH a great character!

Antoinette isn't turned. He's just promising to turn her. You're right about not really liking any of them. They are all morally evil tbh. Who's right and who's wrong in the situation? It's very complex.

So as far as Claudia’s character, and experiencing sympathy for her I would encourage you to think about unlike Louie she was a child and could not consent to the dark gift, basically kidnapped and forcefully adopted by two people in a toxic relationship. One of whom is incredibly emotionally abusive, whilst also only teaching this child to get validation from him and his partner through partaking in violence. So her being incredibly violent and mentally fractured is very sad and very much Lestat’s fault ( and is very accurate to how real life children who are raised in abusive households react). She had to leave and experience a very traumatic event, to unlearn her needless violence she was taught as a child (granted she still kills human). She’s is the only one out of the three who tries, works, and grows against the trauma she’s endured. Only thing is as soon as you end up living with your abuser again, you fall right back into your dark mentality which you can see her in this ep. Lestat has 100% created all these issues for himself by being a abusive selfish manipulator, who’s one end goal was to create a lover for himself who would stay with him for eternity NO matter his behavior…. Ew

You GOTTA watch Mayfair Witches! That Anne Rice Series is only 3 books as opposed to the Vampire Series which is like 12 or so with the extended vampire books included. FYI, there is an audiobook version of the Mayfair Witch trilogy read by Kate Reading who I was was first introduced to listening to Wheel of Time on audio for the first time.

I'd also recommend the series Let the Right One In. Another vampire show but it covers different ground from this and has some great performances.

That's why there was a change in Claudia's James Cameron "stole" Hailey for the "Avatar" sequels. 😂

📍; Louis trys to hunt just to please Lestat, (but Lestat was still cheating.) I think he turned Antoinette so she could listen to Louis and Claudia thoughts because he couldn't hear them... *Remember when he turned Louis in the church he said 'He could be his self unapologetically,' etc.., Now he gets mad because he doesn't want to feed on people! 🤷🏽‍♀ tf!

It was hard to watch Louis heal from his wounds then suffer severe depression. I was wondering if Lestat loves Louis and wanted to prove how he changed. Why did he keep seeing Antoinette and wanted to be caught? Did anyone else heartbreak when Louis described his love? “I loved her with all my heart and him with a wounded one.” He was so dissociative during the love scene and it was sad. It was also gross because Lestat was just with Antoinette!! Did Lestat even shower lol? Do you think he slept with Louis to help him feel better because he was depressed? Any thoughts?

I'm not a fan of the changes from the book in this or the 5th episode. I still love Louis and Lestat and the actors' performances, but I have definitely fallen out of love with the show at this point. Lestat was absolutely a frequently evil and amoral character, but this is a deliberate choice (as we find out later), and his "evil" was often staged for effect. Turning him into an abusive partner and parent here really bums me out. It's just not who he was in the book (which sounds weird, I know, since he was a murderous monster), but this just feels unnecessary. It is CLAUDIA who is the cold one, it is CLAUDIA who has no conscience. That's part of her tragedy -- and Lestat was jealous and petty but not like this (the movie handled it perfectly).

He is honest not because he tells the truth, or does not lie, or withhold the truth. He means " Genuine" as in..." I am what you see, I have never pretended otherwise. If you expected change,...that's on you."
