along the same line as ArgonTheAware caught & pointed out... What if I told you the wife planned it all? She knew what her husband likes, loves and wanted but for some reason he had difficulty doing those things with his own wife and she wanted to figure out a way to get him to let go his apprehensions for doing those things with her and her friend told her "put out an ad in the Personals Columns of his favorite newspaper and when he replies with a place you know he'd pick just go and meet him there". Just one of many different possible scenarios... You should watch this interview of Rupert Holmes on his hit Escape (The Piña Colada Song), it's nothing short of MIRACULOUS!ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0i_w1LgFDKM.html
This is one of those songs that you've heard so many times back-to-back that you're almost sick of hearing it but when you hear it you still can't help but sing along. Lol
Maybe in the 80s I would have changed stations when it came on. But now that I'm old and have mellowed somewhat, I'll hear this song anytime! The Bridge, Sirius XM, plays it quite a bit.
One of the cheesiest songs ever written...... but so clever, you just can't stop listening...(not to mention that Rupert Holmes looks like an accountant...)
Fun fact: In an interview, Rupert Homes said that whenever a fan recognized him in a bar they would always offer to buy him a Pina Colada. He always refused because he hates pineapple!
Actually. She wrote the Ad first. He answered the Ad. This shows how they were both tired, but realized that they never talked to each other. Was afraid to make changes.
A song that makes you realize how important it is to communicate and keep things fresh in your relationship. ...and SHE wrote the ad, personals are separated into women seeking men, etc. That's why she said "oh, it's you. " And they both realized their love for each other and lack of communication.
@@VKrulikoski I’m sorry you took me as shouting when it was only meant for emphasis as I’m very deliberate with word choice, however, I did agree with you twice but both of my messages were deleted. If we’d had a face-to-face there would have been no need for explanations on either side but with texting it gets lost in translation. Carry on.
@@mattbecham3094 I don't get any notifications on my phone when someone replys on my comment. 🤦♀️ I just happened to come back to this! I'm glad I did! I love you too! 🥰
Jennifer, first you quoted "Poison" -"Never trust a big butt and a smile", and then you request "Escape", a funny and clever song about a married couple looking for sex / "a good time" outside of their relationship. I told you after the "Poison comment" that "you're the kind of woman BBD was warning us about" (😍 a beauty with captivating smile). Now your love for a song about a married couple creeping around, just confirms my previous warning about you. 😆😆 Jennifer, despite never meeting you, I feel I know a few things about you. 1)You have a great taste in music, 2) You're probably the funnest person ever to hang out with, 3) You "may or may not have" lived out those songs to some degree. 🤣🤣
Love your reaction. For those who think they knew what this song was surprised. One female reactor was so mad she looked like she was going to smash her hand on the desk until she got to the end, The look on her face was priceless.
This song became Rupert Holmes' biggest hit ever!!! It went to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the last week of December 1979. This song also has the dubious distinction of being the last No.1 hit for all of the 1970s. Jamal, you also should react to Rupert Holmes' two other songs. One is called "Him". The other one is called "Answering Machine".
Ol' Rupert looks like some average officer worker doing karaoke--the sweater and tan pants, cheesy smiling, awkward movements. LOL! Great to see you reacting to this one!
Even though I love Rock and Roll, this has always been one of my favorites. Nothing like belting this out in your car! Great review, thanks for doing this one❤
Am I the only one completely flummoxed by the logistics in this song? He reads an ad, immediately writes a reply, sends it via snail mail asking her to meet her the next day at noon.
Man you are so chill why can't the rest of the world be like you. I am an old white guy that grew in an orphanage, we did not know color, race or anything political and you have no idea how much you have brought me back to my childhood when people were just people. Keep up the love it is appreciated. Peace and love my friend
It's about how important communication is in a relationship. Even though they had been together for a long time they had no idea the things they shared in common until they nearly threw it all away.
This is an example of that cool music that was being made in the late 70's and early 80's. I'm pretty sure I was listening to Randy Newman's "Short People" song on the radio around this time.
Rupert wrote and played on a hit song called "Timothy" for a group called The Buoys in early 1970. It probably is the only song about cannibalism to make the top twenty. Edit. This is a request Jamal. Unlike "Escape", this one rocks. I've heard it was big in mining towns.
As others have said, this is actually a really great song that relates to everyday life in that they both wanted more out their "boring" relationship, never realizing that the other person was perfect for them, they had just never communicated properly.
For a second there I thought Jamel may have missed the point. He didn't seem to react when the guy found out it was his wife he was meeting up with. They didn't know each other as much as they thought they did and had more in common than they thought. They lived happily ever after until....................HIM!!! (but that's another story)
I can't believe this coming May 24th will be my 19th wedding anniversary. We could both use some Pina Coladas about now. We've actually been divorced and remarried each other so, we're in it for the long haul. We both love this song, and I just decided that I'm gonna fix us a couple of Coladas on the 24th and put this song on and see where the night takes us. We don't usually celebrate dates but life is short and we're gonna celebrate this one! Peace!
He also had some lesser hits such as “Him”, “Answering Machine”, and one with his old group The Buoys called “Timothy “. That last one is crazy-it’s about cannibalism.
When I was a kid, we had "Answering Machine" on 45. I still know every word to it. I was surprised later in life when I realized so few people knew it. Thanks for that memory!
Professor of Rock did a video about this song just a week or so ago... THIS Song was #1 in The 70s & 80s, Here's the Story From The Artist | Professor of Rock Basically, it was the last song of the 70s and the first of the 80s ;)
@@larrym.johnson9219 That is the point! What kind of relationship did they have if they were together a long time but didn’t know that much about the other? PLUS lets not sugar coat over the fact that they each thought that they would be skipping out on the other. (Instead of just talking it out first!)
@@rachel-in-the-208 Yes, because sometimes that's what it takes. Life isn't a Hollywood movie. People fall out of love and sometimes fall back in again.
@@THEC.O.VISIT. Who said anything about wanting it to be a “hollywood movie” ... It is the sneaking around and cheating that I have an issue with. If you fall out of love be the adult and say it out loud. But if you and your wife are fine with cheating, more power to ya! (Peace)
Pretty interesting story on how he wrote this. Originally it was going to be the line "If you like Humphrey Bogart" but was changed to "if you like Pina Colada's" Apparently he sung this in one take.
Outstanding... good ol' classic!!! I remember the Spring of '80 when this released, sitting in my Z-28, watching the rail fall through the t-tops... and certainly MANY other times!!! My gf took vaca w/ her family, to FL... Got home and told me about seeing Rupert in concert... Vacation song??? Hang on Brother J!!! 😉😉🤣 You might want to check his "Him"...
Jamel you cracked me up after the first verse when he said "I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long..." and you stopped the video, looked at the camera and said "Well damn!" 😁😂😁😂
The thing about this song that gets me is .....so y'all just gonna skip over the fact yall both was trying to cheat.....or were they just roll playing hmmm
No they both deserve each others cheatin azz.. Oh you were role playin ? ya me too, what a coincidence.. OK lets start our relationship anew now be honest from this point forward, communicate more and spice things up a bit, Deal..
If you’re on a Rupert Holmes kick, the song You Got It All is a hidden gem. Sung by the Wolfgramm siblings also known as The Jets, it was on the soundtrack to Jaws The Revenge. 80s smoothness 👍
Agree, is my favorite and the better song. In an interview Rupert said Him was the main song from album, but studio said other wise. Pina Colada replaced Humphrey Bogart, sing it in its place.
@@universerover1 Every time I hear “Him” I think to myself what a work of art it is. I know that may seem silly ... but the lyrics and music just flow so well! ☺️
@@rachel-in-the-208 I love it, too! I was obsessed by it when it was on the radio in 1980 (I'm a chord nerd) but it swiftly disappeared. Many years later I found live versions of it on RU-vid. Look for the one where he's wearing a blue shirt, sitting at a piano. It starts out with him doing a spoken intro over a few rubato chords. It's beautiful. Great backing band.
@@kennethlatham3133 THANK YOU!! I’m watching it now. I feel like I’m surfing every time I hear this song (I don’t surf, but I think you know what I mean. 😉) ... This is seriously underrated. Side note, he wasn’t very attractive 😁
Great yacht rock music. You should also react to Answering Machine and Him. In addition to his hits he also wrote a one hit wonder for the Buoys, react to Timothy.
I Think That The Combination Of Breezy, Jazzy And The (As You Noted) Smile On His Face Is That He Knows (IN THE END) That Yes, It's His Very Own Girl -- His Woman -- His Wife. It's Kind Of Winsome and Lovely To Discover We Were Wrong And Now We're Right.
its not a kinky song, its a song about talking to your lover and connecting to them, they had to take ads out to get to know each other. Neither one of them knew each others fantasies, because they had no communication. its a deep song set in a comedic setting. Just like Hey Ya is a sad song but outkast makes it happy, the lyrics are deep and sad
I listen to that all the time on RU-vid; there is a very good, genuinely LIVE version of it where he does a spoken intro to it while playing a few rubato chords on the piano.
This was a Number One record for Rupert. Also Loved his follow up to this..a song called "HIM" which reached #6 in the USA and #3 here in Canada. 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
