Jamel -- On 1970s radio (during my youth...I was 14 when this song was out), things still had to be sung somewhat "in code" to keep it family friendly. Lyrics weren't blatant. That's why you have the sticks and stones rubbing and sky rockets analogies. BTW -- The members of the Starland Vocal Band formerly comprised John Denver's backup vocal singers.
I was 8 when it came out. probably late 30's before i knew what it meant (Office Space on cable). we were very innocent LOL then all of a sudden we WEREN'T.
lots of those 70's tunes were funny about how they tackled the subject. he should do a deep dive on those one hit wonders that have odd premises. like the old Dr. Demento show. React to stuff like "Telephone Man" , "Chick-a-Boom", "Chevy Van"...
My mom used “afternoon delight” to us kids to refer to an ice cream treat..She would say it to my dad but, come to think of it, I never saw him with an ice cream treat.. But I do have 5 siblings..🤔
"Cheesy" my ASS. The harmonies in this song ARE gorgeous. I have listened to morons rag on this tune for 46 years just because the tone deaf sheep next to him/her/it (did I hit your fkn preferred pronoun? Because that's sooooo important to me) ragged on it. Or got wildly distracted about the daytime-f*cking subject matter of the lyrics. I'll bet you think Wet Ass P*ssy is a wonderful song. Or some yadda yadda rap sh*t. THAT crap is CHEESY. Cheese from under my
at 11 years old and I knew what they were talking about 🤣🤣 I blame my grandma cause I use to sneak and listen to her adult comedy albums when I was 8 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was ahead of the game 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤷🏾
This song never fails to make people laugh or at the very least smile. Such a feel good song not to mention the great harmonies! Imagine this song being your claim to fame. Hi fives all round!
@@bajemo359 More albums? They made five. I'd think if they were going to get to Abba level fame, that would be enough of a test. They were great, but the songwriting was not going to keep clicking with the public repeatedly like Abba hits did. Abba started years before.
So glad this popped up!!!! Great song from the 70’s. Great harmonies and great fun. 🥰. (Btw, YES folks of my generation still call it afternoon delight. 😉) This just made my day. ❤️
"Michael retrieves Oscar and asks him to give Lucile some "Afternoon Delight" to relieve her stress. Oscar mistakenly believes that Michael is referring to a particular kind of marijuana ("Afternoone Deelite") and tells Michael that he'll put it in her brownie."
My mom and family used to listen to this song when I was very young, grew up with this song Never knowing what the meaning of the words were, until I hear it as an adult! Mom what were you listening to??? Omg Lmao!
My wife used to whisper that she wanted some "Afternoon Delight" into my ear when we were in the most ridiculous places. Like Church services for one situation I remember well. She loved this song. Just hearing it again brings back so many happy memories.
I was a kid when this song came out, and I would sing along with the radio…having NO CLUE what “afternoon delight” really was! I was so innocent I thought we we were going to 31 Flavors for ice cream 🍨!! 🤣🤣🤣 This song was literally ALL over the radio that year…
I was right there with ya! We all sang along to that song as kids, it was HUGE! And we had the 45 rpm record! Not a damn one of us knew what it meant, lol! Now thinking back, kids all over singing the words of this song is hilarious! But the harmonies were gorgeous!
Here's a fun fact about this song. In the 80's there was an Australian children's TV show called 'Simon Townsend's Wonderworld'. The first half of the first season aired with 'Afternoon delight' as it's theme song. The creator of the show, Simon Townsend, wasn't aware of the suggestive nature of the song but after he was told, immediately had a new song written to replace it.
Which in some ways, wasn't entirely a bad thing -- it pushed you to get creative with your lyrics so that you could slip things past the censors in a way that even if they *knew* what you really meant, they couldn't *prove* it. :-)
That's so true. Just because everyone's language on TV was not profane didn't mean it wasn't dirty as hell. Just watch any old episode of Hollywood Squares or The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Johnny Carson could tell you the dirtiest punchline in comedy history by raising his eyebrow at you and letting your mind fill in the rest.
@@joeday4293 Yep. Paul Lynde left the audience and crew of "Hollywood Squares" helpless with mirth for twenty minutes once just by uttering the word "loneliness" in a certain context. (Pity Lynde was such a nasty piece of work, but he was hilarious...)
This group was 2 couples in real life as well. And the couple at the start on the right (Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert) were also songwriters before this. Along with John Denver they wrote "Take Me Home Country Roads". They wrote several other songs for Denver, and sang backup on several of his albums.
Same here, I was 15 when this came out and just thought it was a great catchy song, not having a clue what it was about. I never really heard most words in any songs on the radio or ToTP, just interested in the overall sound. Jamel is so funny 😂
My sisters and I went to Oprah's show when she had 70s performers and this band was one of the guests. They nailed this song after not performing for years and got a standing ovation.
One of my all time favourite songs from childhood. I had no idea what it was about (to me it could have been about ice cream), but the tune, the harmonies and the upbeat rhythm just screamed summer holidays to me. Only many years later did I understand what was meant.
They are just singing their song nothing salacious or dirty about their mannerisms. Just an enjoyable song and what great harmonies. Imagine this song being sung today!!!
Afternoon delight is in the dictionary because of this song. "A well recognized term for a midday sexual encounter, often between or instead of scheduled events."
I was 11 when that song came out. I had no idea what they were singing about. But I loved singing. I remember singing that in the car with my momma in the front seat. She was probably laughing her butt off on the inside. Ha ha ha
Funny. Yes. I went to lunch from work one day and got some afternoon delight. As a matter of fact, this song was playing on the radio as I was driving to my hunny bunny's apartment. After that, afternoon and morning delight became my favorite daytime past time. Night time was extra special too. Free, free, free.
Ron Burgundy: Do you really want to know what love is? The Guys: Yeah. Yes, tell us. More than anything in the world, Ron! Ron Burgundy: Well, it's really quite simple...it's kind of like....
I used to love this song, as a kid, without ever having a clue what it was about. I've never seen them before, they were the geekiest looking bunch ever, especially the guys 😂
My dad always Loved this song... Good Ol seventies! Amazing harmonies on this song. Great harmony ending. The pedal steel guitar making the sky rockets sound. They won four Grammys in 1977 for this. Record, New Artist, Pop performance by duo or group, Vocal arrangement for two or more voices.
Back in the day, that song was the JAM! Remember when The Starlight Vocal Band had a variety show? I was eleven...I didn't know what they were singing about...I was just diggin' the vocal harmony.
It's kinda surprising this song made it on the airwaves in that day, but the vocals were so wholesome, I think it slipped thru the cracks. And I'm sure your parents know this song, lol.
Meanwhile in 1976, we were singing this happily. As a 12 yr old it took me awhile to get it LOL. They're so nerdy and corny and it's so dirty...it is indeed hilarious.
Yep, this is the white version of "Let's Get It On." Perfect description. You know what t-shirt I want? Jamel staring at us over his glasses saying, "Is everybody grown in here?" 😆
Jamel man I just want to say I been watchin you for a year. Your the best out there man. I had a ruff day today and your reaction brought me right back to "happy". Keep killin it man. I was born in 65 so i was 11 years old when this song came out. Your reactions take me back to when we listened to AM and FM was brand new and you always felt like you new your favorite DJ. Thanks man.
It was the 4th of July 1976 when I first heard this song. I was 10yrs old and too young to put the lyrics together to figure out the songs meaning. I though what an appropriate song for the event, "skyrockets in flight." Tee hee!! True story!!!
@@harleyreddragon2394 I just said that to my sisters at my 55th birthday party last month. It's amazing that we got a chance to celebrate the US 200th birthday.
The song was inspired by Clyde's restaurant lunch menu called "Afternoon Delight", you'll notice they rhymed it with appetite. Clyde's is in Wash DC. Eaten their many times. Booty was not on the menu.
A fun fact for you, the blond lady (Taffy Nivert and the tall dark haired guy Bill Danoff used to be in John Denver's band and co-wrote "Take Me Home Country Roads" with John. Also, Bill and Taffy were married and the other couple Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman were also married. Both couples divorced after the band broke up.
Good Will Hunting. Not only did Will bust this out during one of the sessions in the movie, it's also featured about a minute or so into the closing credits as he's rolling towards California
That's why you are the best reactor. You picked that up in the 1st couple sentences. Your wit is as good as your charm. You should have brought out the freaky deaky shirt.
We always made fun of this song in the 70s. The hubs and I were married in 1976.. he worked for his family and our apartment was maybe two blocks from work.. the first day when he said he was going home for lunch, they all kidded him about a "nooner"... yes.. we had plenty of those in the early days.. now, its a distant, but pleasant memory. Peace to all the good humans out there.. we are keeping great (and some not so great) music alive.
This really was a great song from back then. I think a lot of people loved the tune and great harmonies (that part at the end almost sounds like a classical fugue!), and then we started realizing what the words were really about, and it just made you smile. It really is wholesome, which you'd never expect. Thanks for reacting to this classic Jamel! :-)
