Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. I also find this song both sad and happy at the same time. The thought that they were so unhappy that they needed to seek companionship elsewhere is sad to me, however because they were able to reconnect it's ultimately happy and I hope it helps with their communication with each other. I shake my head at the thoughts though as it's just a song, not real people, but that's where my mind goes.
@@GraniteOwlBear Maybe? They might not have had a real commitment, just a casual relationship that became routine with no side relationships. People didn't talk about "Friends With Benefits" back then, but the idea certainly existed.
Naw...they didn't need counseling, never cheated on each other, and lived happily ever after. How do I know this? Because, to my knowledge, it's a fictional song and imaginary people always get happy endings when it's left up to me to predict the future! lol
Yes! I was coming into the comments to make the same suggestion. The stories in the 2 songs are totally different & yet they seem like a perfect pair. 😊
@@sylvanaire That's so funny. I wasn't sure why Copacabana immediately came to mind but it's reassuring to know there must be some connection we recognize 😉
Exactly! I think it takes a second listen to put that whole picture into focus. He was just reading the paper and happen to look at the Personal Column and loved the ad so he replied to her! Love it!
I was DIEING every time you stopped and tried to break it down! 😂 I was just like wait for it...wait for it...LMAO! Your reaction when the script was flipped...priceless! 😝
@@grrrthemad1595 “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes was the number one song at the beginning of 1980. It remained at the top of the charts until January 5, 1980,..."
Well, they were both seeking to cheat on each other. At least they both realized that they were each other's special person. I'd say the real message is to keep on growing together and discovering new things about each other.
We are old buggers who heard this song first time around - no WAY this would have been a big-assed radio in hit in 1979 if it did not have this ending! ;-) Those of you commenting on here that these people have a f*cked up relationship, etc -- look in the mirror. Most of us are always hiding something from everyone, even our partners. Get real, people do their best but they have their secrets. Paying down a mortgage, doing the 9-5, raising kids.... it is all hard, most of the time. People loved this song, because they saw themselves in the story, and the ending was, basically there is a point to "us", and what they would probably want for themselves, maybe....?
He was born here in Cheshire in England, a village called Nantwich, where they have a Pina Colada day every summer, he showed up there a couple of years ago and sung it for the locals, who were all drinking Pina Coladas obviously 😁
My wife and I chuckle whenever we hear this song. The way the pair of lovers in this song have a laugh ("You were going to cheat on me? I was going to cheat on you! How charming! Hahahahahaha!").
Love this song. My husband and I have been married 43 years! We've had our ups and downs, but all these years later, we still love each other, still make each other laugh and still enjoy spending time with each other. It takes commitment to one another and a desire to make it work when you hit those dry spells or face some of life's harsher realities.
Congratulations! 39 years here on June 1. And yes, it's not always easy but there's comfort and love. I don't know whatt I would do if I didn't have hubby all of a sudden. Most of my life has been us together.
They both tried to cheat and they both failed at it. Kinda funny. The look on your face at the end was priceless. Might have been better if Rupert didn't dress like a math teacher from the 70s though. Classic story of two people who've been together so long and thought they knew each other so well, they stopped communicating. Then they find out they really didn't know each other as well as they thought.
Everyone has heard this song. And most think it's a cheesy vacation track with a good hook. But those of us who have LISTENED to it know its true GENIUS. Love it! One of my favorite songs.
I remembered the song playing on the radio from back in the day...but only the tune and the Pina Colada "hook" line. Like BP, my mouth hit the floor when I LISTENED to the lyrics and the true story unfolded. Wow...the guy was an amazing storyteller... Had me fooled! Loved it!
I love this song. I love the sound of it, it’s so relaxing, but it’s also funny and deep at the same time. He’s pointing out that we sometimes take our spouses for granted and that if we look closer we can find that flame again.
Don’t be dissing on Rupert Holmes, I personally dig his understated teacher/dad vibes 🥰 He has pure musical talent with his career writing for Barbara Streisand and other artists. Not too many people were into Yoga in the 70’s, it was considered for the earthy hippy dippy types ✌🏽 His song, ‘Him’ is another catchy tune.
Bwahahaha. There it is, the reveal. Worth the wait. Bwahahaha. First reviewer who didn't get mad and shut down over the song. You actually saw the beautiful irony
My niece went to one of the Caribbean islands (don’t remember which one since this was about 20/ 25 years ago) with a friend she met in school-the classmate was house sitting and was told she could go with a guest. Anyway, when she came back a month later she said the house belonged to a guy she never heard of who sang a song called Escape but she forgot his name. I said Rupert Holmes!! She was shocked and asked how I knew..they were there she whole month and didn’t put it together. They both knew the song but never as anything but the Pina Colada song.
Yes!!!! Another one I can cross off of my list!! I love throwing this one at reactors and watching the realization come across their faces when it finally hits what this song is actually about! The twist at the end gets everyone!! 😆 Love it!!
@@cherylbrowning3303 Thank you very much. And if you like thrillers, if you haven’t already seen it, watch “Hypnotic” with Ben Affleck. I’m not a Big Ben Affleck fan but I’d watch that movie over & over. I would’ve bet that I had that movie figured out 5 or 6 times only to find out I was wrong every time!
The story behind the making of this song is wild. He'd hired a studio and musicians to record another song but one of the studio musicians was so drunk he passed out and the session was scrubbed. In compensation he was offered a shorter slot the next day. But for some reason he couldn't record the same song. So that night he wrote this song but the original hook line was "If you like Humphrey Bogart..." It didn't scan right so he switched it on the fly in mid-recording.
You're face was perfect! we all knew....and we knew you didn't know....and we all just sat and waited till the curtain dropped. You did not disappoint.
I think if the song did not have a happy ending it would not have become such a classic, gigantic hit. And funnily, Rupert gives Dahmer vibes at first, but by the end...he's adorable!!! Lol Love your channel, ❤ to the new baby.
Rupert Holmes is no stranger to writing songs that generate attention. He wrote and played piano on one of the most infamous pop songs to become an international hit. "Timothy" by "The Buoys", released in 1970. You should listen to it on- or off-air. Can't lie, it would be fun to see you react to it and try to decipher why it was so controversial.... 😊
Written by Rupert Holmes. Fun happy 😊 song 🎵. Definitely 👍 in yacht rock 🎸. He wrote a song for the Tongan 🇹🇴 American group in 1985. Suggested video 📹: The Jets perform You Got It All.
Rupert Holmes may not have the looks of a popartist... but he can write good songs! For other artists, and for himself. His track "Adventure" will always be one of the highlights of 1981 for me.
As others have said, I was so happy to see you react to this song, and it did not disappoint. You love the songs that tell a story, and this one is priceless. Rupert did not waste a syllable in this one, and that plot twist is unforgettable once you hear it.
I was working at a record store when this came out. People would come in and ask for "That Pina Coleda song" -(The first pressings only used the Escape title but the changed it because no one knew it by the title.) Rupert Holmes was an accomplished songwriter long before this song, having worked with the likes of Barbara Streisand. Before that, he wrote the hit song "Timothy" in 1970, the only top song hit written about cannibalism! 😀
I never got a "married" vibe from this. It seemed like the living together thing that everyone was doing back then, because the economy was crap and you needed someone to share the rent, so you might as well sleep together too. 😁 Things were different pre-AIDS. I always liked it because it seemed like they finally communicated instead of just going through the motions and maybe it could become a.lasting relationship.
The cycle of most relationships ... after time, you don't necessarily get bored but you do often get complacent and take things for granted. Find a way to change things up, talk, etc. It was great to see your reaction .when you're unrealized ... then you thought about everything you'd said. 😂😂😂 Great reaction (as always)!!! 💞
The song is actually about COMMUNICATION, he is saying if you take the time to communicate with your partner you will always have a better relationship.
lmao that reaction was priceless. Not one to watch while your family is sleeping at 3 amish because you are gonna wake their ass laughing. So glad you did this song. The song is brilliant lol Great reaction!
I love the twist of this song that they turned out to have things in common they didn't know about and were able to rekindle their romance. Or at least I like to think so. 180, not 360.
The guy who wrote, and who is singing, this song is also the author of a (hopefully) fantasy book called "Murder your employer." Make of that what you will.
The look on your face was priceless when you realised that it was his old lady who was the cheater in the personal ads not him stepping out on her but her stepping out on him. Keep reacting brother
One of the most deepest, thoughtful lovestories I’ve ever heard, with a wink and a serious message at the same time. When it comes to relationships my big goal is to never ever stop trying to get to know and learn from that one that you once fell in love…. Never stop being curious, adventurous about you, your partner and your relationship. And let things go as well ❤
