That place is listed as a hotel. 7 bedrooms and 7 baths, 4,726 sq. ft. Now, hold on to your hat and sit down! Listed for $1,249,000. Sutter's Creek is so pretty and quaint. I like it. The Serbian church and graveyard are so pretty and interesting in Jackson. Thanks.

Thank you for profiling these towns. I have been to all of them many times before, however not recently. The Preston Castle and Youth Authority facility was where my mom worked as a senior youth counselor (lieutenant level) while the facility housed youth offenders, up to age 24. She lived in one of the small houses on the grounds, which was right next to the castle. The state only charged the officers tax on the house, which was $360 a year! I have many photos of this house, taken back in the 80s to the 90s. We toured the castle a few years ago. The gold country is a very special place to my hubby and myself with many great memories we have together. From Sacramento CA.

I knew exactly where you were when I saw the thumbnail. Oddly enough, I "discovered" Preston Castle thanks to Rob Lowe. He and his sons explored the place on the premiere episode of their show "The Lowe Files". (FYI, the castle is open for tours on weekends) Highway 49 is such a great drive along the foothills and through the Gold Rush towns, especially in the springtime when everything is so green. I'm headed up to the area next week with stops in Yosemite and Calaveras Big Trees. Speaking of Yosemite, have you been? You were so close on this trip it would be a shame it you missed it. Anywho, thanks for the tour...until next time, happy trails!

John Sutter was actually responsible for events that led to the Ca gold Rush as gold was discovered at his Mill. Unfortunately it also led to his 2nd financial downfall that Joe eluded to. I had to do a report on him back in 6th grade…in the 80’s. I hadn’t even thought of it till now. Great video Joe, my wife and I always enjoy watching them.

Great presentation Joe and Nic. These are great California towns and treasures. Say what you want about California these are some healthy towns and communities. Fun fact: The California state highway signs are a tribute to the 49ers…gold miner shovel. Hence the designation of highway 49.

When I was in high school in Oakland, California, in the mid-1950s, that castle in Ione was the Preston School of Industry, a reformatory. My counselor told me I could wind up there if I didn't change. That scared me straight.

I'm loving your tours! I used to take day trips to Sutter Creek with my elderly mother when she was still alive. She used to love to get ice cream in town. On the way to Sutter Creek, there is a daffodil hill that is covered with yellow blooms in the spring and up the hill from Sutter Creek is a railroad museum with an old train that you can go on a ride through the forest. Sutter Fort is in downtown Sacramento. It is restored as a full fort and is a museum. There are exhibits and re-enactments, and a gift shop there. I think that it was the National Hotel that is supposed to be very haunted. My brother-in-law stayed there one night, booked and paid for by his company to do a job nearby. He did not believe in ghosts until he stayed there. He called us the next day to ask if he could stay at our house in Sacramento until he got the job done.

Unfortunately they’re building housing out here and CITYING UP the country. I do t want Bay Area trash out here… stay with all the dirty libs in the Bay!! Bay bay go away don’t come back any day!!!

It's a very beautiful building to explore. I went to the grand opening a few years ago, and it was quite the experience to see how massive it is, and the outbuildings nearby were just as incredible. You get a sense of how they were taking troubled boys, and helping them to be better. Including Merle Haggard. There's also one gargoyle left on the tower - it used to have 4.

Sutter Creek is our best perserved. Historical Society would love your tour. There is still an operating mine in Sutter Creek. You did miss Amador City (Pig Turd Alley) population of 200 lol. Oh, yes there is. I've been to many places where you can feel the presence of those that don't want to leave. Preston is one one of many places where it's been proven. Whaley House in San Diego, and the Myrtles Plantation are two of the best known examples of a haunted building. The Birdcage Theater in Tombstone is also a very haunted place, along with many places in Virginia City Nevada, Donner Memorial Park, etc... I also know of someone who was in the Columbia State Park Museum and thought she saw a docent walk in while she was closing out the register. She went to look for him, and saw no one.

Nice walk through of the towns. The last walk through of the correctional facility historical building looks awesome. Too bad you didn’t get a close up of it. It kinda reminds me of here in SoCal, of a former boys correctional facility as well name Fred C. Nelles in Whittier. From pictures of the past the building looked beautiful. I believe it was demolished due to damage of an earthquake or something if I remember correctly reading from their website. They did build brick houses after. Unfortunately due to unfortunate circumstances at the center regarding the youth, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger closed it down. Later the city bought it and demolished most of the infrastructure but leaving a few buildings, maybe for historical reasons being it was once labeled a CA historical landmark. The land now is a retail area with restaurants. I’m definitely going to have northern Ca with sacramento on my list to visit. Thank you

I was there for the Grand Opening a few years ago, and was able to explore the basement and first floor areas. They have tours of the second floor, but the third is off limits due to damage.

Lord Spoda; one of your best videos yet. Too bad you could not have gotten into the Castle. Keep the good videos coming.

I heard that the shovel and pick sellers are the ones who made most of the gold rush money. :)

Yes, the National Hotel is still a hotel. Several of the mines have had major disasters. The Kennedy Mine is huge. We live in Ione. The reason for the high average income is because of the Mule Creek Prison, which is right outside of town. The economy around here is actually pretty good. The Castle hosts lots of events and has the guard fences is likely due to vandalism. They have a huge Halloween event there.

In 1948 a family friend and his family lived in an apartment located in the Preston tower, I spent that summer with them, not a place I would want to return to.

@@markive9907 Very Cool ! When you look at the front of the building, it's supposed to be near the Intake Entrance on the right. I took a picture of that area, but didn't see it immediately. I'll have to look for it again when I go back.

That last winding road in Sutter Creek-, with the hill in the background, -- the very last scene before you edit to go to next town - is gorgeous!!
