We were in the USAF for 20 yrs. My husband was deployed for 9.5 yrs of that 20. When he got out it was hard having him around 24/7! Luckily on our house hunt we agreed on everything. I’m happy to say w we’re still together (47 yrs) & still love our home

Many episodes have people saying 'putting their own stamp on it' ... just move in! hang the paintings you have, fill the bookshelves with the books you read, put your granny's china in / on the sideboard ... plant peonies in the garden ... those things are your stamp ... no need to crash walls down ...

I am an ex-military wife and I also served 2 years myself. We bought a house a few years before my husband finished his 22 years, we were in West Berlin at the time. We bought near my parents so they could keep an eye on the property whilst we were away. It was far better to do it early so that we weren't rushed into anything and it was definitely the right thing to do. Everyone who serves in the British forces knows when their release date is so it is so easy to get organised without last minute panic.

For the 2nd couple, I think the 385k bungalow was a better option. It was turnkey and still left room for one to put one's stamp on it. It didn't need a total redo like the 1st one. For the other couple, I loved that 2nd rural 4-bed house they chose. Would have picked that as well.

Just saw the first house Kirstie showed her couple. At first blush the outside is 70s bland, but the inside is huge. At the front, removing some pavers and planting gardens would transform the front completely. There is PLENTY of space to do so. The back garden looks nice, too. I love that the kitchen is large enough for a table but that there is a dining room as well. The bungalow in Pennington is, for me, an absolute no brainer. I love the look of it, and the bits at the back could be made work. A lovely homw
@VIncentSunflowers

I, too, wondered why their vision hadn't extended to the exterior and paved front. If brick felt too dreary I'd whitewash the house, and yes, remove pavers and install a lovely garden. Inside was a dream!

Agreed. I've always felt you can "add" charm and curb appeal much more easily and cheaply than you can add space.

I was thinking all the same things. The first house had stacks of potential to make it look much nicer and would have been the best buy.
@kunalsen2123
@kunalsen2123 Год назад
To be honest, I did not find it ugly at all. In fact, I quite loved the look of it. It was uniquely homely and wasn't trying too hard to please. Too bad Kirstie too played down the "look" of it. Curb appeal is overrated, but many do fall for the trap, that's why the asking price then had reduced from 495000 to 430000. I hope someone sensible bought it. It was such warm yet detached house.

I loved the potential of the architect’s home (especially that 3 bay garage) - but wondered about the wisdom of that spiral staircase. While compact, sculptural and esthetically pleasing, those things make for difficult climbing as one gets to 60 years of age - and installing a proper staircase can become pricey as walls need moving and rooms need reconfiguring after shrinking...

Don’t understand when they say there is “nothing “ to do. There is plenty of opportunity to “pick up a paint brush”. I think Gillian has no idea how disruptive a true project is. Redecorating alone would probably make her happy.

@Kevin-sm8pn
@Kevin-sm8pn Год назад
Well, both of them were in the military, so they don't really have experience with living in non-military housing long-term, so it's difficult for them to have am opinion about where they're going to live. They would be fine living anywhere, as long as their significant others are happy.

Sad for the husbands. Really? A military wife moves frequently and never gets a say where or when. They live in government housing, so it's not ever their home. And after decades of chasing their husbands for THEIR CAREERS, you think it's selfish when the wives finally get a home of their own. You sound horrible.

For a man who wanted a place to hang his hammock, he bought a house with no trees. And where was the garage? The other couple should have increased their offer. A military man currently working for Cunard could find the money.

Sometimes, what you work out in your head as what you want - isn't really what you want, it's just what sounds fun. Reality sets in & you let it drop. Well that's what happened to me, anyway!

I have to say I love this series, but this was the MOST ANNOYING, AGGRAVATING EPISODE I'VE EVER SEEN!! While both of the women genuinely seem very nice, they were really getting on my nerves. I understand that you want what you want. But for the couple who needed a bungalow, The third house was huge, with the enormous great room. There was plenty to do in there. The garden/backyard was absolutely beautiful. That wife was crazy. Why would you want to go to the expense and trouble of a renovation? Especially when that house was so great. That's a lot of work and I doubt they have the money to make any project that compares to that house. As far as the couple who needed space for the kids, I don't know what that lady was talking about saying that when the kids come and their partners? Excuse me? I take it partners means friends? I don't know what this means, because I'm from the US, but I wouldn't buy a house thinking about children's friends. If she means when they grow up, their marriage partners, I think that is too far away to think about. Anyway, you said you needed 3 bedrooms and as Phil said, this house had 4 bedrooms plus a large garage. The second home they were shown was pretty good too. Personally, being a child of the 70's I kinda liked the very first house!! lol. True, it doesn't have the period features, but size matters, in my opinion, especially when kids/teenagers are present. Also, they didn't say it, but I was wondering, if this woman is contributing to the purchase price of this home, since they have only been together for 4 months, it seems a bit premature to buy a home together, with the woman having such a say if she isn't providing significantly toward the purchase as well, because it is entirely possible that this relationship won't last. In both cases, I think the men should have been a little more verbal. As a woman, I get the saying: Happy Wife, happy Life. But these two, while very nice, SEEM not to be thinking clearly or not being realistic. I guess I will try to finish watching the episode now. I am unsure if I can though, because I was just too outdone!! I hope I don't sound mean. And I hope they all get the house they ultimately want without regrets later.
