The greatest deep track song of Rush's entire catalog. They finally broke it out of the vaults and played it live a few times during their last and final tour.

Given that both Alex and Neil were being injected with painkillers before every show on R40, the song had become very personal by then. There's one other great deep track that they never played live that I wish I could've heard, Available Light.

I am wiping the tears from my eyes as i type this. My heart goes out to this couple for having lost their child. I am truly blessed to have not had to endure their type of loss. I received this album, "Signals," as a Christmas present from my parents in 1982. "Losing It" became my favorite song after hearing this album in its entirety the first time (I had requested this album for a Christmas gift after hearing the song "New World Man"). I am now 53 years old and can relate to this song on so many levels.

Neil had stated in his final interviews that he didn't want to be seen as the dancer as written about in verse 1 and why he chose this time to end his part in the band. It's also the reason why he "suggested" this song be played (for the first time) on the R40 Tour. I was 12 when this song was released. I am now 49. I have NEVER heard this song without choking up. You know how I knew that Rush was retiring from touring on their R40 Tour in 2015? Because they FINALLY played “Losing It “ LIVE!! Of course having the “virtuoso violinist Ben Mink” who played this originally on the “Signals” album in 1982, to play it on that tour was the “icing on the cake” for this life long Rush chick. Oh, & this was the only tour, since recording it, that it was EVER played. It was an often fan requested one for every tour since the Signals tour.

So off the Signals album the first lyrics are about a ballerina and then about a writer-in this case: Ernest Hemingway and at the time Neil reflected that this applies to anyone with gifts of dance, voice, writing, sports that there is a finite time of being at your peak and slowly over time: Losing It…the gift that made you a living perhaps famous celebrity known to be best at something. Neil himself acknowledged that it was coming to an end for him-retirement. Aches pains etc ultimately cancer but also knowing the years of stamina particularly from Fly by Night to Power Windows was ebbing away. The wonderful Mr. Ben Mink on Electric Violin 🎻

Been watching you guys for a while now and I'm so sorry about your son! When I saw you react in the middle and then you explained about how he made you feel about new music, I initially took it that you were reading the lyrics and were having a moment! Great, great song and the lyrics have more meaning to me now than they did when I first heard it. Some of Neil's best lyrics ever! 22 years in the Army and another 11 working for them as a Department of Defense civilian. Always reminds me my best days may be behind me, but I'm marching ever forward to where "the sun will rise no more" - hopefully in another 40 years or so! Thanks again guys - you rock!!!

Dear Kel and Rich, Firstly my sincere condolences on the loss of your son, I cant even imagine the pain you are experiencing. Lyrically, Losing It is one of the most moving pieces Rush has written. Ben Monk originally played the violin portion, but John Dinklage (Actor Peter Dinklage's Brother) who was part of the string quartet that toured with Rush on the Clock work Angels tour, played the violin part at the New Jersey R40 Show. I would suggest you listen to "The Garden" form Rush's Clockwork Angels album and "Supper's Ready" from Genesis' 1972 release Foxtrot. Have tissue ready.....

This song=DARK, DEEP, DEPRESSING, EMOTIONALLY GUT WRENCHING. It's like goth meets classical techno pop. Only Rush can pull off that kinda musical madness, and make it magically magnificent. I can't help but get choked up listening to it, after all of the family and friends I've lost before I even turned 50yo last year. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by musicians, my son is a rock drummer and my gf plays principal flute in the symphony, so I have people bringing me new music all the time. I offer 2 recommendations: Coheed & Cambria and The Dear Hunter. My son introduced me to both and my gf and I are now big fans of them as well. When we got to see TDH live she said it was the best live vocal performance she had ever seen. I would say their best material can be found within the Acts concept albums, mainly 2 thru 5. As for Coheed & Cambria, I honestly like all their stuf,f but I started with Good Apollo 1. Trust me, you will be hooked!

You know man, I’m going to tell you something about myself also. First I love you guys. I’m writing this because I can relate to what you are saying. Maybe the end of last year’19, I was getting a little more depressed than usual, watching my rock people getting old and retiring or just dying. I know that ROCK and ROLL will NEVER die, but I found myself getting really sad. End of an era? I felt old and out of place. It was and is such a big part of my life, who is going to keep it going? Then (I know i’m slow to the game) I discovered the YT reaction channels! Wow, really worked wonders for me big time! The first time appreciation of some of you is fucking priceless! It really brings back good strong memories. So again, thank and GOD bless you, peace, Phil

Sorry to hear about your son!! You may want to listen to the entire Rush Vapor Trails album. It's the first album after Neil's family losses.

Kel-n-Rich, you should check out some of the songs on Rush's "Hold Your Fire" album. For me, along with so many of their songs, this album just brings out emotions in me like almost nothing else I have ever listened to. Particularly check out the songs "Time Stands Still" (don't get too mushy with each other when listening to this), "Open Secrets", "Second Nature", "Prime Mover", and particularly "Mission" (which gets me very emotional) and one of the greatest songs Rush has ever performed, in my view .. very much underrated. I think Kel would particularly like this one). Then from "Power Windows" check out "Grand Designs", "Territories" and especially "Middletown Dreams" (another one that I think Kel will just love .. very emotional).. these will all blow you away!

They actually had a 4th musician on this one. A guest electric violinist.

"Do not ask for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee." This was a line from a John Donne poem meaning that every person's death diminishes the world. Ernest Hemingway used that line for his novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls." The writer in Rush's song is Hemingway, who would eventually commit suicide, indicated by the line, "...where the sun will rise no more". "The Sun Also Rises" is another novel by Hemingway. Yes, Neil Peart was a voracious reader.

Neil Peart’s lyrics are just as powerful as his drumming. One of the best songs on Signals. #Mystery The Last Glass of Wine off of Delusion Rain. This band is from Quebec Canada where Kel was born. Beautiful song. This one is for Kel .

An epic favorite of mine. I feel the message of the song is to get out there and try to achieve something you love. Regardless if you become great at it and recognized for it or not, the journey is the true gift. Even if you loose the ability later in life, you still knew what it was like to chase after it or even have it.

Released in 1982 and performed live for the first time in Toronto 2015 on their final tour. I got to see it. Phenomenal and emotional. Amazing song.
