FINALLY - someone who acknowledges and points out the beat Neil is maintaining with BOTH FEET while his upper extremities are totally independent and free forming. That has ALWAYS been what most impressed me and I have yet to hear a reaction channel point it out. GREAT REACTION 👍 DH

As a drummer and a fan of Neil Peart I was excited to watch this even if I have seen it many times. It is so much better to see than to hear a drum solo. Kudos to the drum tech that had to setup for him. I had the privilege to watch him live back in the 1980's (yes I am old). I have never seen Buddy Rich live but if that was his idol then I could only imagine seeing him play back in the day. Thanks for doing this video.

Just like when I requested Eddie Van Halen last month I was worried you would have already seen this knowing you are a rush fan when I requested it. So glad you hadn't. The reaction was so awesome! I've seen this reacted to multiple times but you are the first to point out how what he does with his feet is equally as amazing if not more so than everything else he does. Instant like! It's not a drum solo it's a drum concerto! African drumming,two kits acoustic and electric,also xylophone. Crossover in arms,waltz feel with feet while playing different rhythms. then ending with big band style with the gong patch. The end 👌

He is triggering those Midi sounds with the cymbals. There is an excellent RU-vid video of him at a show soundcheck explaining the triggers and other effects to someone interviewing him. The solo he is demonstrating in that video is the same one he's playing here. He even explains the spinning drum kit, pausing between parts to explain how it's done. You're an inquisitive guy, it seems and you obviously have an eye for details. Let Neil explain it to you himself in that vid. Sorry, I don't have the link but it's not hard to find.

doesnt hid drum tech have a midi rack behind neals drum kits where he changes all of the mdid sounds. i am pretty sure neal doesnt change any of the midi sounds. i dotn think neal plays toa click track .

There is a great video of him doing a tribute to Buddy Rich. He helped put the concert together with other drummers and during the concert he does Cottondale and it's great.

As others have commented, Neil is triggering all sounds from different points around the drum kit. During the solo, his drum tech (Lorne) is manually switching the patches to get the correct programmed sounds for each section of the solo, and to hear Lorne tell it, the timing was crucial and hectic in parts. There are great videos out there showing the setup of the kit and breakdowns of how the solo was composed and constructed, with great explanations of the techniques and exercises being showcased and which parts allowed for improvisation each night during the performance.

The 3/4 obstinate under all the crazy hand stuff ( including varying time signatures) always amazes me. His newer solos started incorporating a Latin flavored obstinate. There are so many amazing drummers but Neil's solos are the most soothing to the ears. Some guys throw tons of chops or speed but Neil's are like songs. This one goes from early tribal history to big band ( with lots in between)

One additional comment - the section where you commented on his feet keeping perfect time during that "1-2-3, 1-2-3"; that was Neil's tribute to The Drum Also Waltzes, a Max Roach song that was also famously covered by Bill Bruford.

There's a brief shot of Buddy, during the solo. It's a known fact that he was one of Neil's inspirations. You should check out his cover of "Cotton tail".

As for the triggers there are 6 he's using during that segment (after the crossovers) 2 V-Drum pads on the left. 2 V-Drum pads on the right. 1 pad just above his snare (11 o'clock) and trap at his left foot.

Thank you! I'm not a drummer, but I have watched a number of drummers analyze this performance and none of them mention the feet or how "the things" work. I appreciate that very much. I'd noticed the feet and was looking for recognition that what he was doing was amazing.

The triggers are the roland drum pads. there is two over the floor toms on his left and one next to the floor tom on his right when playing the Roland Kit.also he has a paddle on the floor next to his bass drum paddle.. Credit go to his drum tech Loren Wheaton who off to the side helps to switch all of this . By the way the kit takes almost two hours to set up.

Neil wasn’t just a drummer he was a composer. I can’t say if he was the best over all,but when it comes to composition and execution you would be hard pressed to find someone better. At least in the rock genre.

My very first concert was Rush, Grace Under Pressure tour, 1984. I was 16 and already an obsessed fan.This was the year Neil incorporated electronic drums (Simmons pads in those days) and built his first hybrid kit. I got to see Rush at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver and in those days, Neil did in fact spend a portion of his performance with his back to the audience whenever he switched from one kit to the other. I don’t know what year it was when they finally built him the turntable riser, but yeah bro I was there at the start of the concept ✌🏻🤘🏻👍🏻👋🏻🇨🇦❤️ Edit: Neil’s tech Lorne Wheaton activates the triggers when needed, but Neil controls them

Neil was good friends with the buddy rich family and was asked by his widow to play with the band at a tribute concert. There is a video of it and I believe an interview of him talking about it

His performance is probably my favorite video of Neil. Just seeing him behind that little kit and playing with the band was so cool to see. What I love most about it was his face. You can see how much he loved what he was doing. I'm sure you know, how concentrated Neil always was during a Rush show. It was rare to catch his smiles and relaxed is not the word to use when describing him during a show. So I guess it is nice to see him just enjoying himself. ♥😊

Personally I like both drummers and appreciate them both for different reasons. They have their own styles. They used to play together in California. I could be wrong but I think they jammed with Stewart Copeland in someone’s basement when they all were together at home.

Great reaction. This is the best reaction I’ve seen to this solo. It’s a bassist you sure seem to know a lot about drums. I’ve seen supposed drum teachers react to the solo and that point out at 10th of the things that you did. And you were spot on regarding the difficulty doing the kick tambourine tambourine independently from the hands. I also agree with you regarding the who is the better drummer argument. Neil Peart, John Bonham, Phil Collins, and buddy rich were my idols when I became a drummer. I love Danny Carey also and I could go on and on. It’s hard to explain. They are each completely different but fantastic in their own right, if that makes any sense.

Yes he's got at least one trigger to the left side of the chime his left foot. Look up Neil Peart plays Raw no background and he explains where his triggers are. Definitely has at least one on the side of his chirp chirp pedal. All the sounds you hear he makes like the symbols combined with a sound he knows to hit that one to do that like when he goes to the swing mode. By the way he's not just a drummer he's a composer. Of course he had Idols initially Buddy Rich which he hosted and played in a tribute video that he learned from. I believe the foot chirp the independent playing of the limbs Freddy Krueger help him with that

there is a foot pedal that changes the midi cymbals to be either a cymbal or a horn or a combo horn with a light cymbal during the hit. it was all Neil. live play.. not pre programed. now the video behind him was started. however during the video playing some how Neil plays the licks on the drums exactly like and when the drummer in the videos plays the same lick. Now either Neil starts the video with a foot pedal or his crew starts the video... I think the crew does that but only neil can know the timing to match it.

In reference to the triggers, he is hitting his Roland electronic toms and he is also hitting a small electronic pad just above his snare. For the last section he programed the big band music to play along with. All the sounds were done by him using the electronic pads and his foot triggers. Very musical for sure.

I think it is his feet for the music. Seen Rush 9 times his kit kept getting bigger at 1 time he had chimes also.... Crazy good Him Bonham and Moon are the goats!!!! Yes Buddy Rich, Max Roach. Neil worked for years to make his feet and hands independent

Since you enjoyed this so much, and you're into Big Band jazz, you ought to try the "Burning For Buddy" series produced by Neil Peart. He gathered together some of the greatest drummers (including himself) to do covers of big band tunes that Buddy played on. There were two CDs made in the 90s. Check them out.

One thing to remember also about the digital triggers, is that it let him GREATLY reduce the size of his kit. In the 70s and early 80s, every sound you heard in that solo (bells, marimba, chimes, tubular bells (not in this performance as I recall) he played then all, physically analog with the same proficiency (obviously not the brass samples and band loop)... kit was MASSIVE compared to this. He'd stand, grab mallets for bells, play temple blocks, full size floor gong, literally while the drumkit was spinning he be playing chimes and bell trees in the transition from one position to the other... a legend.

The trigger are in the cimbals and there's a vídeo explain that and activarse the trigger with the left foto. There's no number one are top one's in their styles, and Neil was called The Profesor.

What you thought were roto toms, are actually tightly tuned 6, 8, and 10 inch tom-toms. And no, there is not a Gibraltar rack. Drums and cymbals are on DW hardware screwed into his riser.

Not pre-programmed, no click - the cymbals are his horn triggers. Yes, Buddy was one of his idols, notice his little 6" splash cymbal on top of the kick, just like Buddy.

I am not big on drum solos either but this is not a drum solo, this is a drum song. I do love great drumming but like guitar solos I could do without the "indulgence" ... this has none of that. and yes it is insane how independent his feet are, they are perfect.

I think Neil's lyrical talent informs his drumming: not many drum solos feel like a story! Probably the reason I don't often enjoy drum solos is because they don't seem to have context, beyond being demonstrations of technical skill strung together in time. I mean, I appreciate technical mastery, but, musically, there should be additional...dimension, I guess. Did you know both Neil and Buddy Rich died of brain tumors? Some might implicate "infrasound"...chronic exposure to very low frequencies has been linked to a varieties of injury. Great review and score, Dave!

Great reaction and review! I have watched every single reaction of this solo that I have been able to find. A few of them were by drum instructors or drummers. Your review is by far the most in-depth and you did an amazing job of pointing out the the key parts and explaining the skill required. Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time but he was much more as well. He was a percussionist a composer and a lyricist. To me all of those things together is what makes him my favorite drummer. Thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough review. As others have mentioned his performance with the Buddy Rich band is amazing and something that you would most likely really enjoy considering your appreciation of jazz and swing. I heard Neil explain that he has several triggers around the kit, triggering samples he created. Originally, he used Count Basie sounds, but felt guilty about using someone else's music. In addition to the visible triggers/digital drums, several of his actual toms have the guts of Roland triggers custom built into them as well. There are of course several RU-vid videos on his kits over the years including one that is with his drum tech breaking down the specifics back about 10 years ago. The only part he actually plays "to" is the final jazz loop that he triggers the start of. He rarely played to a click especially in the last 15 years or so, in the 80s when they (the band and he) triggered a lot of loops, or had continuous video to sync with, he would, but he didn't really like having to.

The end swing music is triggered 1 time and the rest plays in its entirety I really don’t know that he uses triggers after the program starts if he does it’s between him and his Tech.

After seeing this now i want to see a reaction by you in the future to a Kai Hahto drum cam (the current drummer of Nightwish). Nightwish song Weak Fantasy and Wintersun solos are great! He is a bit isolated in the ones with Nightwish compared to former drummer Jukka because the latter the OG one who part of the ambiance and showman just as much as other members.
