SiriusXM's Town Hall interview with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush - originally recorded in November 13th, 2015 and aired on November 25th. Hosted by Michael Moore, including questions from contest winners in the audience.
Listening to this interview in 2020 is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I know there will never be a new Rush album or tour. However, I am just a confident that there will always be Rush and my children's children will have the opportunity to experience the magic. The Rush discography is a treasure for all people which can never be repaid to it's surviving members. Canada was blessed.
Yeah, I was fortunate to attend their last tour in St Paul and just being able to experience that and they gave to the end. Such a unique and singular band. They will last and endure. It was so heartfelt and grateful.
Michael Moore is right about Subdivisions, it saves lives. It changed my life and make me want to pusue my dreams almost 8 years ago, by moving from my hometown. That was the best decision of my life!
Yes, and kudos to you!! Such a brilliant song, an anthem for the "misfits". I was too old to be affected by it when released in '82, but can clearly see the impact it had to help others. RIP Neil Peart. There will never be a rock lyricist or drummer like him again.
I feel lucky to have been a teenager when Subdivisions was released. I was a little late becoming a fan of Rush, but I quickly became familiar with their previous albums and officially became a Rush fan for life. Genuinely talented and, dare I say : ), nice human beings who created great lyrical and musical art for all of us to enjoy. Rest in Peace Neil Peart
I'm with ya. Grew up in the time of Rush but never really appreciated them until the last year or so. Too bad because I had chances to see them live but wasn't interested. Its the biggest regret of my life.
@@Reviewster I was lucky enough to have a few fellow band nerd buddies that were into them, so we all piled into my mom's car and drove downtown to see them in concert on the Subdivisions tour. I still have that t-shirt, but I was way skinnier back then! Saw them again in 87 for the Hold Your Fire album tour, actually went to that show by myself. I guess my regret is not seeing them with my older brother who was the one who turned me on to them back in the day. He had graduated college and moved away which is probably why I didn't go with him to the '87 show.
First Rush show I saw was Signals tour, then Power Windows. During the Signals show power went out....everything sound wise just vanished. Stage lights still on them and mics were out. Geddy starts doing improv dancing (tap,polka) behind the keyboards. Applause, laughing, and cheering from around 11,000 fans erupted. They were just laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation. 5 minutes later sound came back, continued an excellent show. Always wished we could hear more from Alex in any interview, his humor is so enjoyable.
The one thing Michael Moore forgot to add from us fans is that we thank them for the tremendous body of work they have left us with. Rush did everything the right way. From building their following through grassroots touring, to pumping out albums every year in their younger days. Do the hard work while you’re young and fit. From 2112 to Test For Echo, this band turned out an entire album, not including live albums, each year, sometimes two within a year. None of us want to see them retire, but if they decide to, at least they have left us with over 20 studio albums chock full of great songs. Rush never was a group who put out a new album with only 1 or 2 good songs, like many other groups have. Their albums are loaded with awesome songs, if you take the time to listen to them. They were mostly a band for musicians in the early days. When I was in high school, everyone I knew into Rush were musicians, which I happened to be. Everyone else never heard of them (we’re talking 1974-78). The reason you would see so many people air-drumming is because half the audience were drummers and knew ever lick Peart was about to play. This is why Rush never changed anything live. Geddy has even joked about people coming up to them, after a show and telling them everywhere they made a mistake or changed a fill.. that’s when he knew everyone has that shit memorized so they better keep it true. I saw a lot of air-drummers (including myself), but also a lot of air-bass and air-guitar (I’m a guitarist, but still air-drum to Peart and have to air bass to some of Geddy’s signature shredding). All of us musicians will miss the hell out of this band if they stop making music. Geddy says his father would have cracked down on him and made him finish school and pursue another career, had he still been alive. I can’t say I’m glad his father died, but I can’t imagine how much music history would change with no Geddy Lee or no Rush? Think of all of the drummers, bass players and guitarists they have inspired over the past 40 years? Many other famous drummers might sound completely different without Peart’s influence or never been inspired to take up drums at all. When you see how many great musicians they inspired in the documentary, and think that is just a small sampling of their influence. It shows you how much one death can effect history. I can’t imagine that musical brilliance just running a deli or laundromat. What a waste and a great loss to us musicians. Thank you Rush for all of the great music you have both wrote and played, but just as importantly; all of the great music you inspired. I have a lot of influence and inspiration because of this band. There is much that they first brought to the table in my music and I owe them that.
I believe both Geddy & Alex were holding out for Neil to give in after a while but finding out about the illness spending time with his family won out & rightfully so ! Mr. Peart you were a class act to the very end.
Great interview guys. I first saw RUSH at my High School( grade 11) in southern Ontario just before the first album came out. While looking at new albums at Woolworths I saw the first album on the rack and realized by the artwork on the cover that this was the band that I had seen a few weeks earlier. So of course I bought it and have been a huge fan ever since. BTW I still think Caress of Steel is my favorite album :)
I'm not a fan of Michael Moore. But Rush is my all time favorite band and this is actually a great interview. Fan driven of course. They asked the bulk of the questions. :-) Great answers too by Alex and Geddy. I always learn so much from them
Hate Michael's politics, but I love the man's talent as a wonderful interviewer and filmmaker. One of the best sit downs with Rush ever recorded quite honestly. Thanks Al and Ged, and Michael and Sirius.
I'm not a Michael Moore fan. Quite the opposite. However, i can't complain here. He does a good job and his history as a fan made his excitement genuine and a privilege even he deserves.

All interviews like this start off with a monologue. He talked about Rush not Trump. Thanks for your opinion because you don't like MM and you didn't see anything wrong with the content. Everyone seems to think Rush are Republicans because of 2112 being influenced by Ian Rand. Listen to red tide, natural science,roll the Bones,Big Money, yeah there lyrics are so right wing. Their lyrics are human. Neil isn't one to deny climate change. He was talking about it in lyrics in 89'! Obviously I lean left... But hearing how uptight people are just because it's Michael Moore. If Sean Hannity did the interview would it somehow help this politically challged RU-vid audience?

I only made it to the 5 min mark, but it sure seemed to be about Michael Moore. About his going to their concerts etc. Not a single question to allow them to really talk. Too bad, because I would have loved to listen to them and not him.
Respect! There are very few bands out there who have been performing as long as these guys and who have consistently turned in top-notch performances both in the studio and on the road. If you are to couple this with their amazing musicianship, their refusal to compromise their beliefs, their single-minded pursuit of musical excellence, their genuine love of music as an art form at its highest point, their unwavering engagement with the human spirit, I think we can safely say that their likes has never been seen on this planet and is highly unlikely to ever pass this way again. The world is a better place for their having been in it.

I like Michael Moore ocassionally, but man, it was practically a Michael Moore monologue for the first 15 minutes or so. I'm glad it eased up after that.
Fly By Night is one of my favorite Rush songs- too bad that isn’t a “live” choice- what a great encore and a song that encapsulates all the great things that are Rush
first Rush record I bought in the late 70s. I was 10. What struck me was the amazing artwork. Back then, the artwork was so important. I just felt a connection to the amazing snowy owl. Been a fan ever since

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! I loved this, as well as I know the band and their repertoire ... I’m grateful that we have this moment in time., to listen to and relive over and over. Thank you SiriusXM, Michael, Alex and Geddy. In these early days of a world without Neil Peart, I cherish the vibe that is Rush.
The venom toward Michael Moore in the comments is hilarious and sad at the same time. We get it - you don't like him. But your politics don't have to poison everything. The interview is a guy talking to Geddy and Alex for over an hour - shut your traps and enjoy it.
I agree completely. Politics turns everyone into total morons. Michael Moore is far left, and I do not subscribe at all. But this thing has nothing to do with politics but people find a way to poison anything with it when they get a chance to, as you said. It’s so bad. And so pointless.

politics aside, his question are as generic and lazy as a I though he was. I do appreciate his enthusiasm for the band and in describing his expiriences with the music I do see myself at that time, but his approach to this interview was unprofessional and dumb, and as always trying to adjust his politics to everything
@@mattmarkus4868I’d either add to your statement or make a slight adjustment. Famous people, who lead with their politics in everything, do spoil the well. The rest of us either deal with it, don’t watch them or hold our nose the whole time (like I’m doing with this). I find the more outspoken ones can interfere with whatever “art” they are creating (acting/music/interview) because of the outlandish things they’ve done or said in their personal life. You admit he’s far left, would you watch this if Steve Bannon was the interviewer? Would the comment section look the same?
@@66gtb Of course I would watch it. I would watch it if anyone was giving it because I love the guys in Rush. The comment section would look the same, just toward a different person. Any divisive figure produces that. Also, just a side note, public people often make public political statements not because they believe in them, but because they feel they have to say the right thing. For their careers, their fanbase, etc. I wouldn't always assume their statements are genuine. In today's time, the actual difference between people individually is likely far less than it appears to be- because people keep their actual views private. And social media doesn't reflect that due to the dynamics/pressures/groupthink and scale involved.

Learned so much from Alex and Geddy. So glad Mr. Moore asked the right questions and let the audience also ask questions that were relevant. Good Lord, without the questions what were these boys supposed to do, just start randomly talking? This was fantastic in my books.
30:58 - Not terribly surprised, given Geddy was the one who pushed the keyboard sounds. I'm right there with him, Power Windows was the record that got me interested in Rush. Definitely one of their best albums.

@@denmac19 I really dig all their albums from Moving Pictures through Roll the Bones, particularly Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, and Presto. I know that gets me in trouble with a lot of Rush fans, but hey, that's the awesome thing about Rush. There's something out there for everyone.
Mr. Moore really nailed it at the end there. With recent comments about future possibilities, some people on the internet are, frankly, losing their shit over what THEY think is right or wrong for Geddy and Alex to do together as a writing/performing team. But these guys got where they are, and earned a deeply dedicated fan base, by always following their hearts. That's all they need to do.
First of all, I just listened to this interview almost 2 1/2 years later, and as I have heard the countless interviews (especially here on you tube), it is always great to hear not just fans, but the interviewers themselves talk about how much respect they have for Alex, Geddy, and Neil, talking about Rush like I do to anyone who knows me. Whether we get anything new from Rush, whether they tour or not in the future is a win for me, in fact listening to their music is still and always will be a win because of the optimism they emit through the compositions or the lyrics. When I personally come to crossroads at every turn in my life I always think to myself, what rush song am I experiencing like Mystic Rhythms when I look at the night sky, or even an album cover, for instance, there are some days when a storm is blowing in and it's a Grace Under Pressure sky, or just the other day, it was a Test for Echo sky while I was yes, listening to the song Test for Echo, so whether we get to hear new things or see them live in the future, as many Rush fans would like, I'm good because Rush has that vast array of albums to listen to at anytime for the remainder of my life, when I need to Jam to the hard cords of Cut to the Chase, or pick myself up with Time stand Still. Thanks for the interview Michael, and Sirius XM, which I am always tuned into, and Thanks Geddy and Alex for more insight on what made you guys tick, to give us all an understanding of ourselves.
Excellent interview-good questions from both Moore and the audience. As for whether they’re done touring or full-stop, well, all things must pass. These guys have given all of us so much; if they want to quit or that’s what happens, fine. Pet peeve of mine: artists give what they want and can; you take it, say thanks (or no, thanks), and leave ‘em alone. :)
Thank you Rush, many years of excellent music, back in junior high, high school, college, marriage, my wife and I saw R40 in Lincoln,NE. Her first ever rock concert. It was my 12th time seeing you all & and the day after my 54th birthday. I wanted her first concert to be the best. It was. Her friend said I was like a kid in candy store. I met Alex Lifeson after a show in Davenport,Iowa, in the late 70's I told him thank you sir, and he said, "I'm not that old". 2 true gems of human beings and one lump of coal. Their music speaks for itself, but their genuine concern for their fellow human beings well being is what sets RUSH apart. Humble, polite and funny. Take a look at the list of charities they have helped over the years, they've made a huge contribution to the lives of so many people. Long Live RUSH!!! ...and yes I will admit even though I am not a fan of Michael Moore, this was a really great interview.
RUSH are my favourite rock band period. They formed the soundtrack to my life and I even got into sound engineering because of RUSH. It's a pity Australian rock radio stations have narrow minded playlists, because they pretty much ignored RUSH and never gave them prime time airplay. As much as I don't particularly like Michael Moore, I think he does a excellent job interviewing Geddy & Alex. He's definitely a fan and is well researched.

i'm a lifelong rush fan, seen every tour since kings, learned to play all their songs on bass, but, as great as they are, canada's brightest musical light is joni mitchell, and i think that even rush might agree
I love Rush! I respect their decision to retire or whatever. They owe nothing to anyone but themselves after giving us all their heart n soul since “74”. Geddy, you’re awesome! I sing and I’ve been told I look a bit like you and sound a bit like you which I take as a compliment of the highest caliber though it’s totally uncontrived on my part.
This one hurts, hearing all the hope for more Rush, knowing that Neil Peart was taken from the world far too soon. But forty years of excellence is an astonishing gift to us all. And give Michael Moore a break. He demonstrated here that he's one of us, the fans. Leave the hatchets, axes, and saws to the people who never have understood what it's all about.
How much of Rush's humanity, humor and music came from their families' experiences of death and disaster? Holocaust, Balkan wars and Neil's personal tragedies.
31:00 Wow...I learned something new today. Geddy likes the album Power Windows! It's not a fan favourite that's for sure, but I personally love it. People get all hung up about "too synthy, too much pop", but REALLY people need to take another listen. There is some amazing drums, bass parts and guitar work. Take a listen to my fave..."Marathon"...it's got amazing bass lines, superb guitar work, and Neil's lyrical content ("you can do a lot in a lifetime.....if you don't burn out too fast") and drum beats are of course fantastic! It's hard to pick out a favourite album, but PW is in my top 5. My other four are Grace Under Pressure, Signals, Moving Pictures and 2112.
It's one of my favorites. I've never understood the "too much synthesizer" or other criticisms. I like Rush in general, although Presto and Clockwork Angels left me cold. I really dig Caress Of Steel, which many dislike. The lyrics to Middletown Dreams, Emotion Detector and Mystic Rhythms are great, and the music is too!
Funny now to hear it described as "soaring vocals"... as a longtime fan who discovered the band when the 2112 album was released, critics weren't quite that kind "back in the day"... terms like "shrieking" and "caterwauling" were more likely the choice... lots of Johnny come lately, bandwagon praise by the critics
I couldn't stand Geddy's voice on the first albums, and thus I wasn't a fan. It wasn't until recently that I became aware of how improved his voice has become.
Really? He's a self-made man, creating award-winning art (documentaries) on his own terms and making lots of money through capitalism. I see a lot of similarities.
I would love to hear an interview with Ged and Alex on Howard Stern. Hate Stern all you want (like Michael Moore), but Howard asks the questions everyone else is afraid to ask. It would be the most revealing hour in Rush history, I can assure you that.
Howard Stern would never interview anyone from Rush. Why? He has a thing against them and any time Jon Hein (a huge Rush fan) brings them up, Howard craps all over them. I don't get it. I couldn't be further from MM's political bent, but who cares? These are folks loving on the most influential band (to me, growing up), so who cares. These guys are total class and I'm sad to say I'll never get to see them all perform together live. Peace

I still think, given Rush have played every tour in US, for us fans in Europe, it was a bit of slap in the face that they didn't do R40 in Europe - they could have done half the dates in the states given the states has always had a tour. Rush recorded albums in UK and the loved it there and between the UK and Germany alone, there is a huge fan base there. They've recorded quite a few live concerts in Europe (Birmingham, Frankfurt etc). I understand why with Neil etc, but I think cutting the US shows by 8 or 10 or so wouldn't have been a big deal and use the energy and time from those to come to Europe and play just a handful of shows to give us Europeans a proper a rightful goodbye like they gave to the US and Canada.
I agree with the proper goodbye to Europe one date in Germany, UK, Amsterdam, Spain, etc. but that is not possible with a small tour like this. R40 grossed an average of $1M U.S. per city because of the small number of cities on tour.

And then Alex throws in a joke. Typical Rush. If Neil was there, I bet he would've done the same thing. It's too bad they couldn't have done a spoken word tour. Or like a history lesson. I love Rush and I love Michael Moore. The negative comments here are from Idiotic conservatives that have to come to grips with the fact that Rush are actually liberals. Geddy has commented on how he likes Michael. The Ayn Rand was just a phase that Neil was going through. They are the very opposite of greedy conservatives and also proud atheists! Great guy's!
“Bleeding heart Libertarian” is how I’ve seen Neil referring to himself in interviews of recent years. He gives money to homeless people and so forth, something Ayn Rand would never condone. I think all the tragedy he went through really made him a lot more empathetic to humanity in general, and less focused on just the intellectualism of Libertarianism, as he might have been in his younger days. I think that’s all reflected in the evolution of his lyrics too.

..I always wanted to catch the "74" Rush & Kiss. When Kiss gave Rush the opertunity to Gain mass National publicity with the obvious exception of the debut album, and the release of Working Man. Gene Simmons went on to later admit that "They We're so good that they were just to good to have them around ,and still feel comfortable enough to think that we might just regret that decision!!
23:00 - I think they got sidetracked by the question, asking if there are any songs they've never played live that people ask for. Rush has done a good job of playing all the "deep cuts" that fans have been clamoring for, so there really aren't any left that most fans are wishing for. They answered with two songs they actually have played live - Farewell to Kings and Fly by Night.
My first show was about 1974 in the the mt prospect ice arena with Kansas and another band . They played fremd high school with kiss when they first came out. Small venue then they moved up to the Aragon ballroom Chicago then the big arenas . Long career hard work but no breaks or sell outs. Some mis steps perhaps but never bowed at the altar of big $
At about the 24:00 mark, Alex mentions a song that was designed as a "studio song" because it's too complex to play live. I listened several times but, due to background noise, I missed it. Does anyone know which song he said?

I'm 14:15 into this and I'm already irritated at Moore's constant insinuations at how miserable and vile and non-charitable and not nice we Americans are. It would be nice if he could simply pay a compliment without having to shit-can someone else.
Unfortunately, at 52, I just now got into Rush. I'm usually not a prog rock fan of bands like ELP, Yes, or Pink Floyd. Too cerebral for my tastes, but wow, the more I dig into their work, the more hooked I become. Of course, going back to the 80's,I already knew that Neil was a badass drummer. One of the very best. I wish I'd gotten into them way back then.
10 minutes in and Moore has done more talking than Geddy and Alex. I want to hear more of the interview, but I can't get past Michael Moore making it about himself.
John Anderson Moore is a blowhard, he talked more then they did. I've seen and heard better interviews. The best interview was by Billy Corrigan when Clockwork Angels came out... There's better interviews with Q Tv here on youtube...
