Did anyone think that maybe Nadia's mom was crazy because she experienced Nadia taking over her body? Maybe when Nadia saw her mom in the mirror her mom saw Nadia, which is why she broke all the mirrors is season 1.

That's kinda what I thought, that Nadia's interactions with her grandmother and Ruthy encouraged their acceptance of her mother's schizophrenia - perpetuating her mother's downward spiral on an already sick mind
@donggunkim3595
@donggunkim3595 2 года назад
At first I thought so, however Nadia experiences her mother's craziness while she is in her body such as bugs coming through her skin and etc. This clearly shows that her mother suffered from major mental illnesses so I don't think Nadia taking over her body is the cause of her mental state. Nadia even speaks to her mom that I didn't know this is what you have felt or something like that.

This season was a bit slow and some plotlines were a bit unneeded but the ending made it up for me. I found myself tearing up more this finale than the last because it hit close to home. Nadia boards the final train with 4 important family members all of which had a shot of looking after baby Nadia. She had her grandmother who had arranged to take the baby, Ruthie and then finally Nora. Her decision to give Nora the baby despite knowing the trauma she will pass down was really emotional because it showed us how much she loved her mother and at the same time of despising her, would give up the other life of being raised by someone else; as we learnt you cannot change history's outcome and by handing it to someone else, Nadia would have experienced different trauma so her personality remained cynical. I'm not saying it was Nadia's destiny to have trauma but its bittersweet admiring that the person you love is flawed but you wouldn't have it any other way.

@@damonztr I understand what you mean, but that's literally the entire premise. It's more about the journey Nadia takes, because there was no result or matter, history stays the same. She gave her infant self back to her mother, because it was the only thing she could do. She couldn't change being raised by her mom, but she also realized that it also meant being raised by Ruth. Yes, her mom would mess up her life, but Ruth would always be there to pick up the pieces. She realized that family isn't just the people who you are biologically related to. When she tells Lenora "I didn't choose you the first time, but that's just how the story goes"...she didn't choose Lenora and Lenora didn't choose her. But in some higher, bigger, metaphysical picture, that's how the story goes, whether it has any real meaning or not. It w And recognizing that Ruth DID choose Nadia. I enjoyed it but it was a lot less straight forward, It was good but not as good as season one. My main gripe is the lack of Alan through the season, Nadia was A plot while Alan was B plot, which was similar in season one but they had to stick together to work it out midway through that season. This season felt like they were never actually together and never really needed to help each other which isn't bad just felt weird and disconnected. Alan being Bi or Gay or confused about his sexuality's was interesting and kind of nice to see him happy but just wasn't expanded enough to make it a satisfying conclusion for him. It was a good watch but not as engaging or exciting as season one.
@nemonobody88
@nemonobody88 2 года назад
Yeah. That's the only thing that felt off with season 2 - Alan's story was just underdeveloped. They should've intertwined it better with hers and made it that in the end both of their choices broke the time-space-continuum-whatever and that both of them need to fix it by being at peace with who they are, what they discovered about themselves, and that they can't change the past.

Agreed. He didnt need the time travel plot this time at all, he couldve just been a helper character like Nadia's female friends were/are. Either make his timetravel plot 50-50, or make him more minor. As it stands, the majority of the episodes have him as maybe 10% of the plot, but the finale acts as if they were 50% again? Felt a bit forced, having the splitscreen finale this time, because this was Nadia's story with Alan supporting, not a 50-50.

Finally got around to watching this. It was good if somewhat confusing. It seems like the opposite message from season 1 in a way. There was 1 little moment I have to mention. When Nadia is waiting in line at the library, the man in line in front of her asks where the ducks in Central Park go in the winter. Holden Caulfield asked this repeatedly in The Catcher in the Rye, which is all about dealing with grief & what happens to someone who isn't able to process emotional trauma. I have to think it's a deliberate reference.
@qazedc3
@qazedc3 2 года назад
Wow the meaning of this season was deep. The message really coincides with what I'm facing in my life right now. Being stuck in past traumas, hating yourself because of it and wishing things could have been different in your mind. When Nadia missed being there for Ruth's death because she was trying to take her baby self and getting to the past again, it symbolizes when you miss living in the present moment because you're too focused on the past. I feel like Nadia "absolved herself" in the end by forgiving her past and forgiving and accepting herself in the present. She also never would've had Ruth as a godmother had her mother not raised her first, so it's like either way she realized the beauty in what she always had despite the negative things in the past.

The first season gave us a lesson that we can change some things and help other people and, as a result, improve our lives. The second season gave us a lesson that not all things can be changed and that we need to make peace with the past because it makes us who we are today. I see it as a loop. If she failed to realize that she can't change the past in Season 2 and that she needs to accept and embrace it, she wouldn't be able to help Alan (the consequences of this we actually see in season 2 when she sees his dead body, realizing she failed to prevent him from unliving himself) and helping Alan was a significant milestone in Nadia's growth.
@Yourhighnessnona
@Yourhighnessnona 2 года назад
It was a good season with incredible writing, but somehow I wanted the second season to be an extension of the first. When season one ended, I waited for the continuation of that show. This season, to me, felt like a completely different show. I missed the atmosphere and energy of the first season and also who the characters both Alan and Nadia were. I missed Alan’s innocence and very human character who was lost in the loop. This season he was literally his grandma and pretty much excess. Nadia seemed sometimes a parody of who she was in season 1. Anyway, the writing of season 2 did give the story closure. I can let it go now and respect Russian Doll still for being an amazing experience. We have Horse to thank for that I guess, as it seems he was the one who initiated the whole time thing in both season 1 and 2.
@jp9707

I agree that it wasn't as good as season 1, but it was still fantastic and far superior to most other shows! I would also have liked to see more of Alun. Even though I'd have loved it if they'd made season 2 a continuation of the first season's idea (re-living the same day again and again), I don't really see how they could have done that - the story seemed quite resolved by the end of season 1. I guess maybe they could have had another character, maybe Maxime, get trapped in the recurring day timeloop. Then Nadia and Alun have to go back into the timeloop to try to find her and help her resolve her past trauma, and in doing so discover more about the backstories of all the other characters and their own pasts? Something like that. See, it's not easy to think of a way of continuing that story! It would just feel like a repeat of season 1, just re-treading an idea they covered already.

@@QualiLap Yes, that's what I thought at first, but in this season there seems to be only one self- constanted timeline - apart from the all the intanglement at the end that all got undone anyway. I mean whatever Nadia and Alan done in the past was already established events. All be it they they didn't know the full details of the history as they went along. The only inconsistence is the gold disappearing. The only thing I can think of is that Nadia changed time periods when she was on the train look out at Alan and the gold remained. @@damientom What's even more weird is that, the bag with the krugerrands in the end of season 2(brown) is not the same bag which she lost in the train in Ep 2(green). @damientom
@damientom 2 года назад
@@sarahshalvy2401 I didn't pick up on that. But at least that made more sense to me because that was in the "void", and the moral for Nadia (I believe) was forget about the 'if only' / 'Coney Island', and the stolen brown bag was the fixated version. If you get my meaning, like the first bag represents the mistake Nadia wanted to fix, and was the one she was complicit and stealing when quantum leaped into her mother. So Nadia associate more with that, then what she losted. I guess it will remains unanswered. Brilliant show none the less.

@@QualiLap No that’s not true, because when Nadia goes back she confronts Chez and tells Nadia’s mother she got all the gold the night before. She then returns everything her mother bought with the gold : the car and the fur coats. I know it isn't part of the main plot but there were 2 exchanges between Greta Lee's character and Nadia that stood out: - one when Nadia returns to her appartment (where Ruth gets their valium pills) - Nadia walks to the table and she gives Nadia this strange sort of blank sort of angry look and Nadia responds with a "What's up? You're being odd" etc expression - the other when they are just arrived in Budapest (just before they get on the escalator) and she **definitely** makes an animal growling noise at Nadia and doesn't appear to be quite 'there'; Nadia sees this and is concerned and confused. BOTH times neither character says anything and it's never addressed again but, equally, both moments were very specifically included in the show. #WhatsUpWithThat

I first attempted to watch this with my husband, who quickly got turned off by the time travel aspect (he doesn't like period pieces anything). Now I finally got around to watch it on my own. Personally, I loved the glances into all the different times and locations tied by the two characters' family histories. It had history, family tragedy, the omnipresent question of 'what if', all things I love. And, oh my God, that soundtrack. Beautiful cinematography too. Tbh my head was spinning quite a bit at the end of my binge, it clearly not being a pure time travel tale but going far into all kinds of metaphysics, of things real and unreal, possible and clearly utterly impossible. At times I was wondering if Nadia was caught in purgatory, trying to resolve the baggage of her family history that culminated into her being what she is before being able to move on. What I do think happened here - but that's really just my very own personal interpretation - is that Ruthie, the dearest person in Nadia's life, died without her being able to be there for her as nobody could reach her for some reason or the other, inflicting a two-fold trauma on Nadia, for once the trauma of pure loss, but also the trauma of severe guilt of not having been there for the most important person in her life at a most crucial moment. It's a traumatic moment throwing up deeply existential questions. What ensues in fantastic time travel and accessing of liminal spaces I see as her working through her very being seeking to find answers and solutions for how things could have been better. When Nadia finally 'comes to' she literally 'lost' a good chunk of real-life time (presumably between her learning of Ruthie's death and coming to the wake), similar the way we often can't remember an intense phase of deep grief very clearly and it all just feels like a blur in hindsight. But again, this is just what I took away from it. And that's another thing I really liked about this show. Nowadays you have to have ba**s as a writer to not deliver an easy-to-understand unambiguous storyline wrapped up with a neat ending as a bow. It's more like a surrealist painting. It may speak different things to different people, or even different things to the same person if you watch it at a different time in your life. I loved this and I will definitely be rewatching it a few times.

I have a question. So in season 1, the timeline split and both Nadia and Alan ended up on a timeline with a version of the other that hadn’t experienced the time loop and multiple deaths. How did the versions that had that experience end up on the same timeline? I’m actually annoyed by this little plot hole so if someone could explain it. Whether I missed something or you just have an explanation that will make me feel better doesn’t matter. Also, as smart as Nadia is, why in the world did she think she could take herself as a baby from 1982 and raise herself as her own in 2022? My brain is bending thinking about what would happen to her past self that would affect her current self as time progresses. Like this isn’t two separate Nadia’s.
@GodOfMoonlight
@GodOfMoonlight 2 года назад
Toward the end of the last season it shows their timelines merging(kinda). The Alan who got drunk and was gonna kill himself merged with the one that knew everything that was going and vice versa for Nadia. Once they were able to help each other get past their death points, the timelines began to successfully become one, in turn making them open up a new timeline where they ended up the leaders of the dance mob, and not the ones going past it. Basically two timelines, not becoming one but the time travelers themselves finding the correct sequence of events to branch off into a different timeline altogether imo.

i think only documentaries etc need to be historically accurate. if we continue to be historically accurate, we continue repeating history by not being able to use black actros in any different way than before if there is even little part of history included. other things from history were not accurate in this show why this should have been ? i enjoy seeing more black leads in all kind of movies and series not just movies/series about slavery or racism. just like it should be, focusing more on how they are normal people like everyone else is, there is no need to make the story about racism etc to have a black actor/lead in it, like things used to be sadly.

MTA Agnes is from the 80s, she stares at Nadia on the train in one scene when she’s acting strange. Then we find out she’s Alan’s grandma later on. It’s not that she didn’t age, it’s just that Alan saw a younger version of his grandma in the void just as Nadia saw a young version of Ruth on the train.

i watched season 2 in 3h and 30 min and after that i didn't know what to do with my life. I just loved it SOOOOO much. Agnes helping Nadia was not only with passing trough the void. See, Agnes was pregnant in '63, Alan's mom was born later that year or early '64. Agnes was about to graduate and move away from Germany and there was a mention of New York when she was talking to Lenie. So if Agnes was in New York working in the Subway system in '82 she have crossed paths with Lenora and this is how all comes around with Nadia and Alan. EDIT: I know my math was a bit off but... listen... Agnes may have not been pregnant in Germany so Alan was not in to his grandpa but Agnes was last year in university so she was about 24-25 at that point. Her move to New York was about the same time. If Alan's mom was born in '65 that makes him 27 if he was born in 1995

Anyone think that there is a connection between Alan's grandmother being present at Nadia's birth? Trust between Nora and Alan's grandmother was already established in an earlier episode in S2, and she shows up again to help Nora give birth - a process that's really difficult and could lead to the death of the mother or baby. It's possible that if Alan's grandmother wasn't there to provide the support Nora needed, Nadia may not have been born. If that was the case, Alan wouldn't have lived passed his first initial death. Everything and everyone had to be in their respective positions so that Alan and Nadia could survive and live, despite their mental health.

@eyesaiah8405
@eyesaiah8405 2 года назад
Her mom and the coins were the most important things to care about for the story of this season and the character development. You clearly did not understand it THAT much. The coins got stolen from her, so in order to fix her own future, she tried to get them back, only to find out she only did the things her mother did already which makes no difference. Letting go of the gold to carry the baby(at the end) was a symbol of letting go of her baggage(this is also covered in the video). And the mom's role, *MOST IMPORTANTLY* was at the end when Nadia finally realize that in the end, she doesn't want to change anything, given the fact that she was given a choice to decide who gets to be her guardian, she chose her own mother. "Because she loves her mom" is such a bland reason for this, and the correct answer is that she like being herself, the pain she went through, the trauma, all that was and is a part of her, and she'd rather be herself than change her life being a different Nadia.

I loved both seasons but I felt like Alan’s story wasn’t told. I truly felt like he was discovering his true sexuality and he wanted to come out as gay. This was also the hidden reason why he originally killed himself in season 1. As for Nadia I wish she could have had that last goodbye with 2022 Ruthie. It was a devastating look into what if. But of course that question only leads to heartache and all we can do is go forward trying not to hold on to a bag that will sink us like the one Nadia almost didn’t let go of. Another unanswered question was what the mother actually did with the coins what was her hidden reason for a car and a trunk full of fur coats and who Nadia’s father was. But maybe these are questions that need to be answered for season 3 hopefully! I just adored everything about both seasons. The whole cast was perfect. Even Oatmeal the cat was amazing!

Season 2 was really trying to find its footing as to what it was and what it's message was u like season 1. It takes a while for this season to grab you because of how slow it was in the beginning. Also, what made season 1 great was it's plot twists and the mind fucking it did to you trying to wrap around the idea of the "Groundhog Day" situation that was taking place. Didn't have that at all this season. Also, they could have explored the fact that Alan could possibly be gay (he enjoyed kissing/being kissed by a guy while in his grandmother's body)or just included him more in the season cause he definitely didn't have much screen time this season.

I wasn’t able to go through all the comments and I’m not a fan of repeat commenting but I don’t have time to make sure…. I say that to say this… the very end as Nadia walks to the bathroom I noticed that Ruth was not a part of the party or seen and when Nadia looks in the mirror, if you very closing pay attention, you will see Nadia squint an eye and move her mouth ever so subtly into basically morphing her facial mannerisms to replicate Ruth. It’s fascinating, subtle and yet such powerful acting. Just phenomenal work Natasha!! And for a moment, it crossed my mind that perhaps Nadia was almost choosing to stay in her loop as her various friends and family to help them the way she helped Alan, or perhaps Ruth was shining through as the guide nodding approval to Nadia for being “the only ones that can forgive ourselves” (paraphrasing?) Anyway, I thought it was a beautiful delicate and perhaps too much overthinking but yeh, there it is. My two cents. (Like anyone will even read this so many years later 😂))

Just watched both seasons. Season 1 was good, season 2 was a little confusing. I got the premise of the entire season. Instead of time going in a loop, it was going through the river stream of time. Which the train represented. It was a linear stream with very little paths to take. What confused me was why Nada didn't realize that she literally had no options to change time til probably the last 10 minutes of the final show of season 2. She was trying to derail time entirely in all of season 2 but it simply was not permitted. It was frustrating to me cause I kind of got the premise of where the entire story was going and new how it was going to end on episode 2 or 3. Yet the Main character kept doing the same stupid shit all the way up til the final episode. Also it felt like they had to reset Nada's character growth from season 1 just so she would continue to do the same stupid shit for season 2. In season one she became more selfless, then in season 2 she was back to being selfish again. This show could of easily left out video games as a metaphor and it still probably would of made sense. For the show barely tied video game references to the actual show. I found it funny she tried to act like she knew quantum mechanics when really a video game developers highest math is calculus. And I wasn't sure if she was a game designer or programmer in which if she was a designer, she would need hardly no math besides algebra. Hell I ive been a software developer for 15 years and barely know calculus and never even touched quantum mechanics. I also figured they might have done a wizard behind the curtain cliff hanger at the end of season 2 revealing some type of technology controlling time or something but it kind of ended 50/50 like it might renew a season or it might not.
