Пора нам сравнить наконец две интересные русские буквы! It's time to compare two interesting Russian letters - ь (soft sign) and ъ (hard sign)! In this video I will tell you how they influence the way Russian words are pronounced and also tell you when they are used! I will continue talking about these amazing signs in other videos but getting some general idea of what they are is enough for now!

thank you. this was a useful review. Could you do a video about Russian temporaral conjuctions like до тех пор and перед тем как? I need to get better with my usage for those contructions. I am very interested in the grammatical function of ъ. You videos are a valuable resource in my studies and personal development. Thanks.

Antonia, can you make a video about differentiating the differences between soft and hard consonants specifically when they are at the ends of words. For me, when soft consonants are at the ends of words they sound too close to their hard counterparts making it super difficult for me to learn. Thank You. I guess this will be useful for other subscribers too.

Good explanation. I didn't know russian had anything like word genders although they don't appear to be as evolved as those in the romance language. Maybe that's related to how some languages like English never got any, and then others did. Who knows where it cave from though, but it seems a bit like a tonal difference.

I thought it was жёсткий знак? Твёрдый works as well. The hard sign is pretty easy, I just think of it as a hyphen. But the soft sign has all these different rules in different situations, a bit like г. I gave up honestly, I just put the words into Yandex Translate and listen to how it pronounces them. There are so many rules in Russian, each one is quite simple but there are so many, eventually you just to have to go with repetition. What I find interesting is that with latin based languages, people tend to pick up how to say them before they understand what someone is saying, but Russian is so complex, it's easier to understand what someone is saying first because you can for example pick out a verb of motion in their speech, but using it correctly is quite difficult. And things like the soft sign are difficult in part because of issues with accent.
