In Russia, the shashka was adopted by all cavalry units, artillery servants and the officer corps. In 1881, under the leadership of Lieutenant General A.P. Gorlov, an armament reform was carried out in order to establish a single model of cold steel for all branches of the military

Features of Circassian drafts They really had light and relatively short, 70-80 cm, blades designed exclusively for cutting. The peoples of the Caucasus have never been pricked with sabers at all, the manner of pricking with a saber was introduced only in the Russian army, and the Russian saber is quite different from the Caucasian one. The Caucasian checker has a relatively thin but wide enough single-edged blade. The part of the butt at the point is never sharpened. The front hand rest is so slight that you might say it is not.

It's a great blade. Superb fit and finish. Excellent balance. Handle bites into the hand a bit. Def gotta Wear a glove. He obviously won't mention that though. Mine cut milk jugs out of the box but wasn't as sharp as I would have liked. Couple passes on the worksharp fixed that. Nicely tapered. Strong yet flexible 5160. And it's imitation horn on the handle which is actually laquered wood. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone who's interested.. Came super quick too.

@@erichusayn i already did so XD. There are not a lot of hanwei shashka Videos out there so i was basicly watching all of your Videos to get a better Look of the blade. I dont really trust hanwei concerning their quality. But this is highly depending on the blade type. But the orice is quiet hefty so i was looking for pros and cons

The grip is lacquered wood.
@mk14m0
@mk14m0 6 лет назад
I have one of these, and I must say, the grip feels rather like plastic. The blade, though, is very nice; light, sharp and well balanced in a proper Shashka manner.

There are photos floating about the internet (if you care to look for them) where someone has scratched away the thick layer of lacquer to reveal the wood core beneath.

This is a shashka, technically a different sort of sword than a saber.
@xiezicong
@xiezicong 6 лет назад
A shaska is a Russian sabre.
@mk14m0
@mk14m0 6 лет назад
Not really. The Russian word "Sablya" (сабля) is "saber." A Shashka (шашка) is a particular sort of sword, originally from the Caucasus, that was adopted by the Kuban Cossacks, and then later, with a "Russified" hilt, by the Don Cossacks. Eventually, in the late 19th century, it was carried by most, but never all, of the Russian Cavalry; some units persisted with a "Dragoonskaya Sablya" (драгунская сабля) which was a proper, European saber. Now, granted, one could categorize the shashka as a "saber," in that it has a curved blade. But by that definition, a katana or a shamshir is also a "saber"; the point is that the shashka is from a different tradition of swords than the European saber.
@xiezicong

Thank you for clarifying. I can't verify anything you've said since I know little of Russian swords. But I would describe and (primarily) single-edged curved swords to be sabres, including katanas, shamshirs, and tulwars, as well as most military sabres.
@mk14m0
@mk14m0 6 лет назад
In terms of categories, you're right; you could put all those swords into a "saber" category. But the actual saber is a particular type of curved sword. It first gains a meaningful definition with the Hungarian Szabla / Szablya, (from which we get [by way of the German "Sabel" and the French "Sabre"] our own English word, "sabre / saber") before spreading first to Poland, and thence (by the 17th / 18th century) to all of Europe, including England and France. The problem I would have with calling a Shashka, a "Russian Saber" is that there were actual Russian sabers, which were in no way Shashkas. For that matter, the same would apply to calling a Tulwar an "Indian Saber." Yes, that's technically correct as far as categories go, but to me, it misleads. I've seen, for instance, Indian military sabers (19th century weapons) and they are not Tulwars in the least.

Does it have a ricasso? A proper shashka should have at least 3-4 inches.

There is no such think as “Russian” saber. It’s shashka and it’s origin in among nations of Caucasus mountains , presumable Cherkessians. This shashka has been later adopted by cossacks, Ukrainian mercenaries that served Russian monarch

Shashka is not a Russian weapon but a Circassian. Even the word „shashka“ means „long blade“ in Circassian language
