Not really much to wonder about. From the perspective of getting clicks, analysing the game of Carlsen, the world champion, or Caruana, the last challenger to the title, only makes sense, unless both their games end in uneventful draws (which is rarely the case, both these guys draws occur after they've tried to eke every possible chance). Someone taking down the world champ is a big deal, it's not that long ago that he was unbeaten in classical chess for a record streak. Alireza will have his due in time.

What's going on with Magnus in this tournament. 1 win, 6 draws, and now a loss to a 2600-player!? He has already lost 17.7 ELO-points in this tournament In 2020, Magnus lost only 2 classical games (against Duda and Aronian) In 2019, Magnus lost no classical game! In 2018, Magnus lost only 2 classical game (against Mamedyarov and So) Magnus is probably fuming now! I hope he uses the restday tomorrow wisely. PS: Many thanks Jan for the summary and for chess24!

@elonweintraub9758
@elonweintraub9758 3 года назад
@@simonpantera I don't think this is even the end of Magnus. Esipenko is clearly better than people had previously assumed. But to be fair to Esipenko, he had been steadily climbing over the last few years, and I think his only problem is that he was overshadowed by Firouzja. Magnus has been shaky of late, but still clearly the favorite to stay #1. But as the OP points out, even Magnus at his best lost occasional games to top caliber players, and that's basically what happened today.
@mikeyoung9810
@mikeyoung9810 3 года назад
People hate people who are on top. So they rejoice if they lose. Maybe Magnus is struggling with something that's on his mind, maybe he is sick, maybe he's just acting human. He's just a guy who is good at chess and only time will tell where this might lead.

Great game, even better pronounciation of "Scheveningen" by a German. I know Jan speaks some Dutch, but this is next level (together with "Wijk aan Zee") ;)
@richardvantrigt8161
@richardvantrigt8161 3 года назад
In world war 2 when the germans invaded the Netherlands, they used special troops dressed up in dutch militairy uniforms and speaking fluent dutch to create havoc by using misinformation and sabotage.When the dutch found out about this, they set up alot of checkpoints on key roads. To pass the checkpoints, all dutch troops had to say 'scheveningen' as this is hard to pronounce it the correct way because of the hard 'g' (pronounce sgeveningen) and it would be hard even for the germans fluent in dutch.

i think Magnus simply underestimated Esipenko. he wouldn't get caught off guard (not like that) playing against Caruana or Aronian. but he hadn't lost to a sub-2700 player in more than 5 years. so he wasn't paying full attention, in a way - just assumed he could play whatever, and still outcalculate Esipenko. that might actually work in blitz or rapid, but Esipenko raised up the pressure and scored a point. i believe Carlsen's somewhat arrogant attitude could've been strengthened by the fact that classic, OTB tournaments were rather few and far between in recent times. and in online chess there's more room for fooling around, so he got a bit used to getting away with it.

@@vibovitold Listen to yourself man. I think you are being unfair to the kid. It seem we placed Magnus in this proverbial high pedestal where we idolized the man as practically undethronable....That nobody could beat the man unless with devine intervention of sort. Are we just to remove any amount of small praises any 2600 elo bracket players like Esipenko rightly deserves by playing hard, playing emotionaly charged and going to that beast mode just to beat a Super GM of Magnus caliber? Like every World champion before him Magnus is following a commonal path of obscurity, fame, glory and then recede in the pages of history and this is how all the legend gone.

@@ulycelgab Then why is Magnus not losing in this fashion vs higher ranked opponents? He let his guard down. Vishy would be dominated in the 1800 bracket if you believe a mental decline starts in the 30s.
@vibovitold
@vibovitold 3 года назад
@@ulycelgab i'm not taking anything away from Esipenko. just because Carlsen messed up didn't guarantee a win yet. Esipenko still had to handle the pressure, trust himself, and display flawless technique, inducing further inaccuracies from Carlsen. he proved himself up to challenge; that's no mean feat. many top level players would still let Carlsen get away with it. this being said, i think announcing Carlsen's demise based on a single game, or even a single tournament where he's doing relatively poorly, is rather premature.

And 6...e5 is more critical than 6...e6, leading to the Be2 Scheveningen, which is known to be a bit better for White. He probably hoped his young opponent would falter and banked on holding an easy (for Magnus) draw. According to the FIDE rating calculator, he only loses about two rating points with a draw because a draw is the natural result of chess.

Although Magnus is a godlike chess player, he is still mortal and can make an occasional mistake. We should know him for the 99.999999% of good moves rather than the occasional inaccuracy he makes (keep in mind, an inaccuracy from a 2000-rated-player's POV is generally a blunder from Magnus's POV).

It's sad that Magnus lost, regardless the way he plays in tournaments is fascinating. He doesn't use textbook moves and plays every game differently(specifically how he was able to incorporate previous world champion kasparov's variation in his play during a tournament). Though not all his plays work out,everyone still wants to see how he plays in these dire positions.
