OMG 10 eggs for less than a 1$ in Russia. I pay £3.50 for 6 eggs in M&S and that's not even the most expensive eggs in London!!!

Incredible how many different supermarket chains they have in Russia. One better than the other. All have very good fresh fruit and veg selection. Much better than what I get in London. It must be really strange to see such abundance of produce for western viewers who are used to classic propaganda about Russia featuring empty shelves. Talking of empty shelves. This is what I often get in central London where I live. And I am not even talking about awfully small selection of everything. Really bad fruit and veg, and horrific service. The famous "great british" customer service. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.

We have supermarkets very similar here in Brazil including the prices. What amazing me is how the Russians are gentle. That's also similar with Brasilian's people.

I live in Slovakia (originally Czechoslovakia), but I prefer to buy unwashed vegetable. Not because of money. Unwashed vegitable lasts much, much longer than washed one, especially potatoes. So unwashed vegetable is a very good idea. As for the prices of mineral water and beer, the situation in Slovakia is the same. Half a liter of non-alcohol drink costs about 0,70 - 1 € (1,5 liter costs 0,55 - 1 € 😀), but half a liter of a beer you can buy from 0,49 to 1,,20 €. In restaurants there are even bigger differences.

It’s important to understand that, just like everywhere, Russia has a spectrum of chain grocery stores, from “cheap and simple” to “high-end expensive”. This one is one of the cheaper/basic ones.

Just a small note about alcohol. While you can see wine, beer, brandy and vodka in russian stores, it is prohibited to sell those to people under 18 years old. Any cashier may and must ask for your passport or driving licence to confirm your age if in doubt (this always happens to my brother-in-law, despite he is over 30 now but looks very young). And also selling alcohol is prohibited during night time, even in 24-hour stores. The particular cut-off time is determined by local authorities (11 pm in Moscow, 10 pm in most of the rest regions). While you can still find some "under-table trade" here and there, this particular law is quite strongly watched.

Being from Germany and seeing the prices of comparable items - even German products! -, I seriously have to ask myself which country is actually suffering more from the sanctions. o.O The reason why Russia still has so many Western products are "grey imports". Trading companies in neighboring countries like Georgia, Kazakhstan, even Turkey, suddenly started importing way more goods than before the sanctions. Not for their domestic market, but to import them to Russia and make some extra money.

This was a real shock for me. Just like my local Co-op in the UK. They even had IPA and Guinness on sale along with French and Belgian beers. I could actually shop from here and never notice the difference. I have to say I'm impressed with the manner of the other shoppers too. They didn't seem to bat an eyelid at you filming around the place and narrating in English. If you tried that in the UK you would be asked to leave I guarantee you. By the way, if memory serves correctly ALL supermarkets across UK and Europe sell alcohol the same as this. I guess its just Australia that don't.

It looks exactly like a typical location from Eastern Europe, almost to the concrete used on the pavement and the shape of the cars. But the prices are incredible cheap and everything looks fresh and healthy!

It's amazing to see the bottles of spirits in the alcohol section completely unprotected by security tags, which set off an alarm if you attempt to leave the store with one still attached. In Morrisons in Wood Green, London, which incidentally is a similarly pleasant shopping environment since its refit, the bottles of spirits are fitted with a security tag, locked in a Plexiglas cabinet, and you have to ask a member of staff to open the cabinet for you if you want to take one of the bottles to the checkout. Even in other supermarkets further removed from this Greater London metropolitan centre the bottles of spirits are still secured by means of a radio tag. Clearly Russia has been less affected by the cultural and moral decline that we are suffering in the west.

Russell, imagine if in 20 years time you are doing videos like: "Russian supermarket after 21 years of sanctions". I mean Iran has been sanctioned since the 80s, Cuba since the 50s and North Korea since forever. So this could be a series that never finishes. Let's hope sanctions last forever! Also the process of closing Russia's borders, starting in Finland, should be speeded up.

Doesn't really compare to any super markets over here, limited choices here. Great the sanctions had almost zero effect on Russia. What it did do is raise our prices in the US. Great video as always Russell. Beautiful Russia, bottom line.

You won't be surprised if I tell you - we have exactly the same picture almost 800 km far to the East from Moscow - in Kazan, and in its suburbs, and even in smaller towns with population under 100 000 people. And in every small regional center which is actually a village with smth about 20-25 thousand population you can find two or three supermarkets a bit smaller than this one you've filmed in the main street and at least a dozen of various groceries around main streets. Come to Russia and have a good time here. You can easily stay and work here, live here and build you future here! Noone will ever ask of your citizenship or nationality, as well as of your race or colour. No sanctions can ever do smth 'bout it. Thrust me, or find it out yourself by coming here for your vacation or whatever.

Что есть доступ к бесплатной медицине по ОМС (которая по некоторым заболеваниям и лекарствами бесплатно обеспечивают-например Сахарный диабет), а если платной пользуешься, то подаёшь налоговую декларацию и получаешь налоговый вычет за лечение. Так же есть налоговый вычет за платное обучение и при покупке жилья. Также не учитывают, что пенсионеры в РФ с пенсии не платят налог. И Российские пенсионеры освобождены от налога на одну квартиру и одну машину (российского производства). Также у пенсионеров бесплатный проезд в городском транспорте (на карточку ежемесячно перечисляют деньги и их вносишь на транспортную карточку и ездишь месяц, лищь бы не укачало🤣), а также бесплатный проезд пригородные электрички. Также, если оплата коммунальных услуг составляет более 20%, то можно оформить субсидию и государство вернет деньги за коммуналку. и возможно я что-то и упустила🤣

Recent news - for "basic" food, like milk or pasta "shrinkflation" is no longer legal in Russia. You now can only sell this products in "standart sizes" - which means 1, 1.5, 2kg, etc. No more "900g what looks and cost like 1kg".

Another interesting video Russell. I'm sure some of those foreign companies that left the Russian market are probably regretting their hasty decisions to do so, most spent millions if not billions of dollars building factories in Russia, but no longer control them, private individuals or the Russian government have bought them at a fraction of their value. Now they are still producing the same products they made before, but under a Russian brand name. A win, win for the Russian economy, they kept thousands of employees working and they got manufacture facilities/factories at rock bottom prices.

Great video Russell, I enjoy the super market tours. I thought you might find this interesting, we live in South Western Virginia in the USA. Our county is 500 square miles. There is only one grocery store in our county. It has really struggled to keep stock. The stock has been steadily declining over the last two years. It is very concerning for us. America is becoming a food desert. Some of my fellow countrymen may disagree with me, but in the region we live, a well stocked grocery store is a thing of the past. reason beer is so cheap is Russia doesnt rip off it's citizens to make up for massive debt issues like western ones. Income tax is like 7%. Unless you are living somewhere stupid expensive like inner moscow; generally an income of $40k in Russia will give you the same life as $90k aud in urban Australia or $70k aud in regional Australia where housing is still mostly cheap. Russia is far from a Utopia, but given current trends it's highly plausible that it will surpass Australia in standard of living in a 10 years. In Sweden we call water with gas 'Sparkling Water'. It's very popular here, sparkling water in total usually sells more than sodas. Still water isn't really a thing here, since we have very good tap water. The prizes in your supermarket are about half of the ones in my local supermarket. Except for salmon, where the prizes looks to be about the same and everything with alcohol, wich is much more expensive here in Sweden. Compared to Australia the prices are so cheap! You stated there's 7 different supermarkets within a kilometre of your home. Competition. Here it's a duopoly of Woolworth and Coles. Price gouging with both making yearly profits of over 1 billion dollars!😢 Alcohol is 10 times more expensive in Australia. We pay the most taxes on the planet after Saudi Arabia. Luckily I live near Aldi in Melbourne. Try to do most of my shop there. Aldi has Alcohol in store (not refrigetated) and the cashiers are seated. We need a lot more competition. Looking at the coffee I see Nescafe. Can you get Moccona in Moscow? That's my preference. Eggs, bread and milk very cheap in Russia. And so much for sanctions!!

Hi Russell😊. Diksi is the cheapest supermarket. I usually call it Supermarket for pensioners 😁. I didn't visit it often 5-10 years ago and I preferred others i.e. Pyaterochka, Victoria and so on😁. But it's become better now 😊.

В России зарплаты выдаются после вычета налогов,страховок,взносов,отличие от американских и европейских зарплат. У них после выплаты остается почти половина зарплаты. Из остатка зарплаты половина у них уходит на кварплату. Так что не надо смеятся что у россиян зарплата сравнении с ними маленькая.

Beer is cheaper than soda in a lot of countries. Most of the "free world" finds it surprising because our countries tax the heck out of beer.

It was interesting to see the price of wines, including imported wines which sit around A$6 or A$7 Australian dollars (correct me if I'm wrong). I used a bottle of local wine in the rural town of Mudgee in New South Wales at a Motor Inn (mini-Bar) and it was $40. It's fair enough that they tend to cost it bit more in hotels and motor inns, but I get the feeling they're slapping on even more excise on alcohol to fix their disastrous environmental policy.

The two grocery stores are I have to shop at in the US are just gross. The freezers leak and smells bad, and eggs usually are out of stock. Store baked bread is $8.00. I hate shopping at both places.

я из России, санкции никак не ощущаются вообще, продукты питания, техника, всё можно купить, да есть иногда наценка, но если захотеть можно купить и по старым практически ценам что и были раньше, единственное на что санкции повлияли положительно. на виртуальные покупки, подписки, игры и тд, я завёл турецкую виртуальную карту и покупаю теперь подписки игры дешевле чем было до санкций! спасибо за санкции так сказать

Dixi is not only a Moscow thing, they are all over, they are low price supermarket even if they are not low on all stuff. I can't remember the details right now but Dixi was taken over by either Pyaterochka or Magnit a few month ago.

This almost like a supermarket in Ontario. Some of them sell beer and wine but not liquor. Recently there are scanners in the supermarket. On the package of a product there are a row of vertical lines that vary in thickness and the spacing between the lines varies. The scanners have these glass windows that usually are about 4 or 5 inches wide and about 6 inches long. You hold the package so the scanner can look at the barcode. It then it displays the cost on something like a computer screen. After scanning you place your item on a metal platform Then you scan in your next item. When you are done it may ask you how you want to pay. At some places you can only pay with a debit card ( it looks like a credit card but payment comes out of your bank account ). At other places you can pay with debit card or credit card. Some places offer you debit, credit or cash back. Cash back means the machine will give you an amount of cash that you want - $10 or $20 or whatever. Then when you pay with your debit card the machine will give you the amount of money you wanted. It all comes out of our bank account. Recently plastic shopping bags were banned. So you have to buy a reusable bag of some kind to use to package your items. At the checkouts where there is a human being scanning in your items you may be offered a paper bag or you have to buy a reusable bag. There is a rumor that the government will soon let small stores sell beer and wine. Liquor can only be purchased at a liquor store. They are run by the government. T hey can sell wine beer liquor rum vodka etc. In Ontario we have BEER STORE. They are run by several brewing companies and only sell all kinds of beer - domestic and imported. But this makes beer more expensive. In Quebec I can buy the same brand and size of beer as in Ontario but for half the price. A tall can of beer in Ontario costs about $3.20. But in Quebec it only costs me about $1. But don't come to live in Canada. Our prime minister just stuck us with another tax - a carbon tax. It is a tax on gasoline and diesel and propane and natural gas. It makes everything more expensive. He also raised the taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. So now 24 bottles of beer cost about $45 in Ontario. Half of that cost is taxes for the government. So Dare to Compare. How would like to live in Ontario? I live in a small town in the province in Russia, and sure we have several Dixy Supermarkets here. Everything here is about the same as in this video, about the same assortment, may be smaller in size, but overall no difference. Except for prices, of course, couse in the provinces products are cheaper than in Moscow

There is only ONE supermarket I can walk to as it is only 1 mile away. Within a 10 minute drive there are 7. 3 different big chain stores, 3 of the same big chain (seriously! there are way too many of that one) and one independent Amish owned small store. Really wish we had your prices and that many store choices.
