Rustoleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit: amzn.to/3qR3INb UPDATE‼ check out our 6 month update on how it is holding up! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SWBdPGi1qww.html
So I have heard. If I decide to go through with it, I have every intention as putting a box fan in the window so that the fumes are pushed out. I have definitely heard some nightmares about it.
I want to add onto this. Not only should you use a respirator, you should use organic vapor cartridges, rather than the standard pink filters. Both the standard respirator filters and N95 masks will NOT protect you from the harmful vapors of the paint. N95 is designed to protect from airborne particles and infectious materials, and standard respirator filters only protect against particulate like dust or fiberglass insulation. Also, VENTILATE your work space. Do not forget this. Use a fan to push air out, and make sure there's both an inlet and an outlet for air. Don't keep your bathroom door closed and expect the fan to be able to move the air from the furthest point away. Bathroom fans will not provide adequate ventilation, do not rely on them. I made this mistake this past weekend. You might be able to get away with poor ventilation if you have the proper respirator and vice versa. But if you have extremely poor ventilation, and you have the wrong respirator, you will be inhaling a very unhealthy and harmful amount of chemical vapor that will give you respiratory irritation. Especially when you have to paint the floor of the tub. The vapors are heavier than air and will stay there until properly ventilated. I developed a cough, burning in my chest, and difficulty breathing almost immediately after I was done with the second coat. It's easily preventable, though. I was just underinformed.
I just watched a video a lady did using the spray can method of this same product. She had the same problem of needing, in her case, 3 x the amount of product it said was required for the job. She also complained of the fumes and making her feel not well. At the end she said she wishes she had done the roll on application as you did, and I would agree because she had major dust issues with the spray cans. At the end she gave it a 2.5 at most 3 star rating. Your end result looks much better. Thank you for sharing!
I have seen the spray can method and thought that would have to be even worse when it came to the fumes, this way was bad enough! Lol Thanks, we are really happy with the results and would definitely do it again!
Wow. Love it! Both you and your husband has the patient to apply multiple coats and called the Company for help. I am also very much impress with the way the Company stands behind its product. My Dad would have called and started yelling, Sh*t hits the Fan...all bad. LOL.
To improve the look, do a few more coats, then wet sand with working your way up through the grits using a wet/dry sandpaper. Finally buff it out using a rubbing compound and you should be able to get a very nice final finish without the roller marks.
About to refinish our tub and the information especially about what happens if more than 2 coats is needed is very helpful. That is not something I believe I would have heard anywhere else so I'm glad you guys were able to talk to the company. I wrote down that special note about that. Haven't done the job yet and already thankful for that information. Like others I would like to hear an update in 6 months and then an update in a year to see how things are working out if you have time :-) Thank you AliciaLynn!
I'm glad you found the information helpful! I wanted to make sure and point the things out that we found out after talking to the company in case anyone else found themselves in a similar position where they needed to do more coats. I will definitely do an update but so far it is holding up great and I am really happy I did it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! The information your husband was able to provide was very helpful. I know you have to sand in between with a 220 for cabinets but the information with the tub was helpful. I'm going to start with my shower first and then do the other bathroom tile and tub.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! This video helped me so greatly! Using the same product and have had the same issues. You just saved me so much time! I wasn’t sure how to proceed. Covering a hideous brown bathtub and surround and two coats we’re definitely not enough. Same problem with it being very thin. Now I know exactly what to do!
Wow! That ended up looking brand new. It took a lot of coats though LOL. I’m glad that you got such great customer service when you had to call the company. I have been thinking about doing my bathtub. After this video I think I will give it a try.
It did take a lot of coats but it ended up looking great so it was worth it! I was really happy with the customer service too, now to see how it holds up! Thanks for watching!
With my experience with these kits and 2 part epoxies in general if you put the product on as thick as possible without runs or sags it will do exactly what the box says and will self level perfectly
Hi, Alicia! The end result looked great. I almost did something like this in our last house. But, then we moved so it saved me the trouble.😁 That is great that the customer service was so helpful. Once you started talking about the smell, I was out on every trying it. I have to be very careful with smells. It can set my migraines off so easily. Thank you for this wonderful share. This was very informative. I hope you are feeling better after applying that stuff on. Happy Tuesday my sweet friend. Many blessings to you. Have a beautiful day sweetie. Hugs! 🥰❤️❤️🌻🌻
Hi Michelle! I am so happy with how this turned out. This is a guest/my son's bath so I was happy to just do this facelift and not have to replace the entire shower! The smell was really bad though and it gave me a headache so I can't imagine using it if you are prone to migraines! It took me a couple of days to feel better but I am now, thanks! I hope you are having a great week, sweet friend, hugs🤗💕🥰
This is good information guys. That sucks that you had to do multiple coats and sand the surface, but glad that the company was responsive and gave you a refund. It is, however, looking very good. We've been wanting to do the same with ours.
I ma doing the same thing this weekend and am having the same issues you did. I will buy more tomorrow and let it sit at least 24 hours o more and do a light sand before the third and 4th coats. Thank you for your research !
My daughter has a bathroom that need updating to much money to rip that tub like ur so this help a lot thank u I have save ur video and share it with my daughter.
Hi, thanks for the video. Also be sure to mix it thoroughly. As a professional painter, we often think we have, but we then go in further as the catalyst, if not mixed absolutely through, will lead to some of the issues you had. God bless.
Great job Alicia... I did mines also. I didn't use the kit I just purchased Rustoleum Paint..... It did take shot if work... Your end results was so pretty...
A few notes for people who don't have the near perfect set up, time allotment, and resources that the folks in this video do: 1.) If your bathroom doesn't have an overhead fan, you *must* bring one in, add an air purifier, bring an air mover...something. The fumes from this product are as pungent as they are acrid and eye watering. Highly recommend using a breathing respirator as well with dual filtering cartridges. 2.) The prep side of this video is a must. The bleach, the sanding, the mildew remover, the scouring powder...it does make the difference between a wrinkle free finish and one with bumps and bruises. 3.) You don't need to remove all the fixtures to get a "close enough" covering. If this is for a client, ask them if that's what they want. Many people add a lining of water proof epoxy to the handle, faucet, shower head faucet to keep water from dripping into the walls. Just assuming you can yank it might cause serious damage and not even be what's needed. Just use standard painter's tape. 4.) For most people who have an already white bathtub, you don't need the rather extreme amount of coating shown in this video. I managed a single coat for an entire bathtub and shower enclosure just fine and it hid the majority of the peeled off spaces. If you have a tan or off white enclosure, you'll need to buy the larger volume refinishing package. 5.) If you're not experienced in using a paint roller with roller brush and are aware of your body's proximity to freshly applied epoxy, just spend the money to get "painting overalls" trying to bend and stand and kneel at all these odd angles to coat your bathtub, if you're a newbie, will inevitably lead to it contacting your clothes, shoes, skin, etc. Just get the overalls and gloves and you'll be happy. 6.) *If you don't have a free 2-3 hours to prep, tape, and apply this product, don't even bother. Once you start using said product, you *cannot* stop as it begins degrading in performance, becoming totally inert at 6 hours. You want to apply this as soon as you mix the two compounds together to get the best adhesion and finish.
I know it may sound crazy however I would suggest send it down again and do another two coats that means buying another kit that way you won't see the imperfections and hopefully it'll last a little bit longer but it does look beautiful thank you for sharing that information because I'm looking into using the Rust-Oleum kit also for my rental and I'm really nervous about doing that thank you so much for sharing and good luck to you looking forward to a future video how it held up maybe a year later or six months later much love and peace to you and your family and thanks again for sharing ❣️
Hi Crystal, I had thought about doing more coats but decided it looked good enough because I was tired of dealing with the fumes! It would probably look better the more coats you do but I'm pretty happy with the results and so far it is holding up great! I will definitely do an update video on it around 6 months or so. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend!
Even if you end up spending a few hundred dollars on this stuff to do multiple coats, it's still going to be better than buying a new tub, considering everything is garbage made in china these days. In fact, when renovating it might be best to buy a real cast iron tub and refinish it with this product. Using a sprayer will get you the best finish if you know what you are doing and have the right equipment.
Just realized this is a thing!!! I'm glad I did before I started to cut out our tub. Our tub is exactly like yours. I just ordered two kits from amazon and will start this next week. I am curious if anyone has tried it with a sprayer?? Thanks again to you and your husband for a very informative video!!
We are really happy with it so far, I just uploaded a 6 month update on it! I hope you are as happy with your outcome and I would be curious to know about trying it with a sprayer too. Thanks for watching, Todd!
It turned out great! This sounds like a much better idea then tearing the shower and tub out. It does look like it’s brand new. Yeah those fumes are super strong on Rustoleum products. I remember that from my dad using their products when I was growing up. At least the company was honest with you and helpful when you called them. I hate when you can’t get a hold of anyone at a company for questions. Let us know how it holds up after a year of use! Like 29 🌟
Hi Ryan, it did turn out pretty nice! The fumes about took me out though! Lol The company was great though so that was nice and the results were great! I will definitely do an update, I'm crossing my fingers it holds up as well as it looks🤞 Thanks for watching, hope your week is going well!
We used a similar kit from a different brand...it turned out nice, but WOW, THE FUMES. I was worried for a bit that I had Covid because it knocked my smell all out of whack!
They fumes were so bad on this, it sounds like the kit you used had the same issue. I didn't lose my sense of smell afterwards but I sure didn't feel very well! Hopefully it was worth it and this lasts! Thanks for watching, Julie!
@@AliciaLynnYT get a real respirator, not a dust mask. 25$ on amazon, paint respirator, many uses, 6200 filter for example, huge huge huge difference vs not wearing one or wearing a dust mask, you will love it I promise. You can get them at most hardware stores, too. 3m is a common brand.
@@Nathan-wf1pr I totally agree, Nathan, you need a real respirator for this stuff!! I definitely should have used something like that and it would have helped a lot!
The trick is to apply thick coats. Don't brush or roll on it too hard after application. EG, first few rolls for coverage, then give it a last one or two light rolls to remain thick in each area. If you do that with the two separate coats, the last one should not be see-through.
Jarrett toes! But seriously you read my mind. I've been doing research on this to do both of the bathrooms. It looks great. Can't wait to see it with the shower curtain up.
Isn’t it that it covers 2 coats on a “standard tub”? Not a tub AND the walls. I would think that you would need a kit for each, the wall and the tub. Am I wrong?
It should only cover 2 coats on a standard tub and walls but we got 2 coats. As I said in the video though, I think the paint was thinner than it was supposed to be.
I started this product and finished my first 2 coats. Its been a few days now with multiple fans going. And the fumes are still very strong. How long does it take to ease up? I mean WOW. This is some strong stuff.
I am not surprised it's strong smelling-- when dry it's expected to hold up to years of daily baths/showers, regular cleaning, etc. My question is whether -after it's dry and looking great- whether there is something you can put on like a 'clear coat' or a wax product like they put on school floors and strip off/reapply every summer. If I could protect this new finish and then only have to re-wax every few years, that would be great. @AliciaLynn I am looking forward to your six-month update, must be about due anytime??
@@isabellavision great question about a protective finish, I haven't come across anything like that myself in researching the product but that would be nice! Yes, I will do an update on this soon!
Good video, very informational. Personally, I don't like products like this because after the cost of materials and tools needed, you are spending almost as much as tiling the shower yourself, which should take less time from backer to grout if you are at all handy. Anyway, just my two cents. Good video for the product though!
We ended up buying an second box to finish the project so it wasn't free, but I think it was nice of Rustoleum to refund us for the first box. It is great when a company backs up their product.
Well done video with lots of good tips and insight. I'm curious as to how well this epoxy paint self levels. Is it smooth or does it show some roller and brush evidence? Thank you!
It does have some self leveling properties to it, so it does do a decent job of self leveling. That being said, the roller did produce the best result as far as not showing marks. I did notice a little bit of brush marks where I had to use a brush. Thanks for watching, Loren!
So just finished my tile shower and tub and two coats (two boxes) was more than enough. I think you guys just had some bad product. Sorry you had to do three coats cause my gosh this stuff stinks 😂😂 great video and information though!
Alicia how much was each box worth. I'm going to do my tub cause I liked the end result. And thanks for explaining the 1hour waiting time between 1and 2coat and then wait 24 before applying 3coats and an additional 1hour between coats 3and 4. Greatly appreciate your time to explain to us the viewer in detail down to the pin on the diy.
Hi Manny, I'm not sure if you mean cost or how many coats so I will give you both. The kits cost just under $30 each and we used 2 kits total for the tub and shower. It was a great transformation for $60! Thanks so much for watching!
Alicia you just answered my question. 30dollars per box. I will be only doing the bottom part of tub and that box covers 2 coats to be precise. Ofcoarse all these info I was aware because of ur testimony. Which you and ur husband the best mrs. Alicia.
Thinking of doing this, love your final result. but just curious. I've watched another video of the process and he mentioned not rinsing after sanding only use the tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding. Could that be why you didn't get the results you were hoping for after your first and second coat. I know the box directions say rinse but I see you didn't mention rinse when you sanded again before your third coat and liked the result better. Could you please let me know your opinion I would love to avoid extra sanding and coating if I can.
Hi Diane, I personally think rinsing the surface that first time is really important to get the surface as clean as possible and therefore ready to take the product better. The less debris on the surface, the better the adherence of the paint. Rinsing the surface does the best job of that. I would have rinsed each time between coats if I could, but the paint has to cure before having water on it. Plus, I am just a stickler for following the instructions, I guess. Lol I have seen people on here do some interesting things with this product that I am sure Rustoleum would not recommend for best, long term results. I think if you follow Rustoleum's instructions, the product works great! I honestly just think the first box we used was defective in some way. I definitely noticed a difference in the two in what they looked like and how they applied. I have a feeling that first box got frozen or something and it compromised it. I hope that helps!
Excellent video. I don't think I am capable of taking off the spout. I am renting and if I mess it up.. well. Do you think with a brush it would work if taped really well around that area? I am also not the best at painting. Thanks in advance. Loved how it turned out. Take care.
Wow I didn't know they sold something like this, you done so well showing all the steps, anxious to see your update on how it held up! This would be a lot cheaper than replacing with a new tub! Great you got a refund, it's too bad they didn't put that on the instructions like you husband said, looks great after 4 coats, it does look brand new! Great job & thank you for sharing! Xx Karen
Hi Karen! We were really impressed with how well this turned out, even if it did take 4 coats! It is definitely a lot cheaper and less work than replacing it with a new tub! Fingers crossed it holds up🤞Thanks for watching and Happy Monday!💕
Thank you for the video! I used the Rust-Oleum spray paint on my sink, but unfortunately, it failed as the finishing texture feels gritty like sandpaper. I'm seeking an alternative solution. Could you please let me know if this paint provides a smooth finish? Thank you!
Hi there! I need to refinish my bathtub because the paint on the bottom of the tub is peeling off. Do you recommend to sand down the tub before painting and if so, which type/grit of sand paper would be best? Also, can I just paint the bottom of the tub, which is where the peeling is or do I need to paint the entire tub, including the outside of the tub. I'd assume I'd have to paint the entire tub because it wouldn't match if I only did the bottom? I've never done this before so please excuse me for the dumb questions. I'd like to do this myself since I don't want my landlord complaining about the peeling paint. Thank you for the helpful video! Looking forward to your reply.
That sounds like the bottom would have to be completely stripped of paint first. Either by sanding or something else, like a chemical. And yes, you would want to do the whole tub so it matched. I'm not a professional and I didn't deal with peeling paint myself so I really don't know the best way to prep that. It depends on things like what your tub is made of etc. Rustoleum is really helpful when it comes to questions on the use of this product, I would recommend asking them what they would suggest.
Once the paint is mixed, can you use it later? I am wanting to paint a bathroom sink and will probably have some leftover and would like to paint a tub too. What did you clean the roller and brushes with?
The paint has to be used within 6 hours of mixing. I kept my roller in a ziplock bag in the fridge between coats then threw it away after I was done with the project.
It doesn't sound right that initial sanding was wet 600 grit and 3 coat was 220. I would think the heavier scratches would be needed on old finish rather than 3rd coat???
The 600 was just to do a light surface sand to prep it for the paint. The tub is fiberglass so you don't want to do a heavy sand on it. 220 is common to use between coats of actual paint that need a little heavier sand than the fiberglass. Also, when it comes to what sand paper we used, and when, we followed specific instructions directly from Rustoleum themselves. It worked great!
No need for a primer, just do the prep steps in the instructions. As for a spray gun, I can't say since I've never tried it. I can see that working, though.
The price and work involved in the demo of the old and installation of a new insert is what lead us to this option...I'm glad we went with this. Much less work and cost.
Hi Vara! I am just glad it turned out so well and at the end of the day it was a lot less work than replacing it would be! Much cheaper too, each kit was $23.70 and it took two! Thanks as always for watching, my friend!💛
Any tips for how to get it off your metal drain...it bled through osme of the tape around the drain. The tub looks great.. until you look at the drain and it looks terrible! Please help!
How long did the odor last until it went away completely? I used the Rustoleum spray epoxy on my countertops and its been 4 days with the bath vent on and it still smells awful. Debating if I want to do the shower or not. Its toxic!
It was a good 2-3 days with the window fan going constantly. I definitely didn't like the fumes or how bad they probably are to breath in! But it is holding up great so far so I would probably do it again myself. Thanks for watching!
Just curious. What state are you in? I ask because I'm an old contractor that has been in the business for 40 years and do repairs daily and was curious about doing what you do.
