Rusty Honda CRX Restoration Ep. 07 (DOHC ZC Engine Rebuild) 

Hello, that's very cool to hear! I don't have any qualifications, just learned everything as a hobby. Main thing I'd advise is don't do it, if you have an option to just buy a clean car. Otherwise this was way too much work and I kinda regret spending 1 year of my life on it. If I didn't make these videos, it would have not been worth it. But that's only my perspective, everyone is different. If your car only needs a few patches, then go ahead, but it'd it's anything like mine... even if you get a second job and work hard 6 months, it will be faster with less effort.

And technically.. the roof structure was the worst, and the fact that every outer panel will warp no matter what you do. So I had to learn some basic panelbeating and using the shrinking disc and dolly. Least enjoyable was probably putting together the interior and dash, I hate that kind of work. Most frustrating was getting it running because of previous mods and nonstandard setup.

Thanks for that insight, i will definitely keep it in mind. I bought mine in 1991, drove it only summers, but the floors started to rust a bit, then the roof of my car port collapsed on it due to the weight of snow. I rescued it but it sustained some body damage on the roof, and fenders mostly so i stored it in my garage after which it sat unused for over 7 years while i pondered what to do. So my situation is different than yours but still a big job nevertheless. In my case there is more of an emotional attachment and if it was not for that i would just sell it and buy one in Arizona rust free. That would make more sense. @@marct4234 ah yes, if it's sentimental and you feel like it's the right time in your life then go for it! You can also do things easier way than I did.. Car body is a hunk of layered metal, most of which is not visible. For example there is this Mugen CRX restoration video, maybe from Russia? It's on a channel Build Diaries. They fixed the floor with very simple method, which is 90% as good. I had to fix everything so it's invisible, because my country is very fussy about rust repair (basically if they discover any repair, it always has to go to an expensive and insanely strict inspection.. pretty much guaranteed to fail if it's not done to absolute perfection)

Ty so much for support! Even if I now posses those skills, I wouldn't do it second time. It's still too much work to be worth it. Better make a family roadtrip to some desert state and pick up a non rusty shell, even if rest of the car is fried from the sun. Unless the CRXs go up so much in value that it will be worth two year's wages :D

It's a neat engine for these small cars, eh? Light, sporty, simple, efficient.. All the kids want B-series, but that's heavy and very thirsty.

Yes, I suspect something is wrong with the injection or ignition because it blows a lot of soot even after rebuild. It goes alright, though I'm not a big power guy - not responsible enough. I'd start overtaking in stupid places if I had power.

@@sidney9534 haha I know what you mean! I have the little b16a in my hatch I sometimes I get over zealous about it lol. I have to remember I’m still in a tin can with no airbags haha, did those engines come with PCV valves? I had a clogged one and it’s made my car smoke like crazy, I cleaned it out one day and found a crazy amount of soot build up cause oil to get stuck in the cylinder and burn. Just a thought

@@Tycrx89 Interesting, I think it just has a straight hose to intake, but I'll check again. My suspicion is leaky injector or weak spark.

Interesting bit of info, thank you! I'll probably crack open the transmission at some point, I feel like it doesn't shift as nicely as it should.

​@@sidney9534 also iirc if u wanted to get carbon lined synchros u can contact synchrotech they can put together the synchros necessary to rebuild it, carbon or brass (to my knowledge honda synchros are shared accross a bunch of models anyways), but it could also just be down to the fluid and keep in mind if u take apart ur transmission, it uses seals on the casing instead of RTV (might be important for internal clearances) so make sure u can get a hold of those/the kit u choose comes with those, i thought they were discontinued everywhere but seems like some kits have them still although the material seems different between kits in provided images

Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. The story is I wanted a classic car to weld on, because all these youtube rust repair guys, and cheap welders. Couldn't get a classic Mini I wanted and really didn't even have space. But my friend had this in his garden, and I talked him into letting me have a go at it. Wouldn't do it second time though! It was sitting on that spot for 10 years, but was rusty even before then. And had a hard life of an autocross racer.

Yyyeah, I got the parts all over 10 different invoices over several months, this all happened 7 months ago, and rockauto stock is changing all the time. Basically everything from 1986 Acura Integra fit, that's a good rule of thumb.

ZC first gen, so 119hp on paper. It wasn't the worst, but all the seals leaked, so might as well do it all, that's what I thought.

I bought it like this, but originally I think it came out of an Integra. But it's a direct bolt in on these cars. I think Prelude didn't have a ZC, rather the A series or early B sereis.
