@@WeekendWatchRepair Thanks Adam! This video answers a question I've had since the beginning -- which is can a person make a video that shows placement and lubrication of every part (that will therefore be useful to other hobbyists) -- and also make an interesting video for non-watchmakers -- without telling stories about dads fighting in Viet Nam and mothers clamming and and great aunts traveling to England -- or reading watchipedia articles about the brands -- or associating expensive watches with celebrity. I think you've proven that this is possible in this video, and in my opinion you could not have chosen a better watch, as it's quite complicated and fragile, there are lots of them still around in need of service, and lots of people love them. If and when I finally get comfortable with my tools and skills this will be my model for what a watchmaking video should be. By the way, if you've experimented with those other tropes in other videos or do so in the future this is not a condemnation of that. I've done it myself (and every other experiment I could think of), and will likely continue to do so -- both as parody and in sincerity. My praise is more about this video as evidence that it's possible to make an engaging video without click bait and pandering to lowest common denominator emotion-based entertainment and ephemera.

@@IMakeWatches Thanks so much. I found that in other videos (not naming any names) that certain things didn't make the edit. While I'm FAR from an expert, I do try to show every single step in the process - right or wrong. It tends to make my videos long, but you are certainly no stranger to long format content! I truly appreciate you taking the time to leave a detailed comment. All my best!

Hello from Rio-Brazil! Thank you for this amazing video. I was able to almost fix my recent bought Seiko Bell…I say almost because after all mounted as you show so beautifully, I discovered that when I set crown wheel to second position, nothing happens, so I can’t adjust the alarm. Alarm sounds fine while turning the hands. If you can give me some help I will be vey happy! Anyway, congratulations of this video and channel.
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair 11 месяцев назад
Thank you very much. Without seeing it, it is difficult to diagnose. The problem likely is in the keyless works or in the bell setting gear train. If you remove the dial, pull the crown to the 2nd position, and turn the crown, does the unlocking wheel turn? If it does then your issue is not within the keyless works. If that is OK, check the connection between the unlocking wheel - alarm setting connection wheel (the wheel that is attached to the underside of the cover plate), intermediate alarm setting wheel, and then the alarm wheel. It is easy to not get a good connection between the connection wheel that is attached to the underside of the cover plate and the unlocking & intermediate wheels. If everything works like it should, you should see that large wheel sticking out the side of the cover plate (visible with the alarm wheel pulled off) and see if it rotates. If it doesn't it's likely that the wheel on the underside of the cover plate is not engaged correctly. If that wheel turns when the crown is rotated, then the issue is likely the connection between the alarm wheel (large round wheel that is what you look at when setting the alarm time) and the alarm setting wheel that it engages with. I'd recommend searching for a copy of the 4006a service guide which will detail these parts and how they interact with one another. Best of luck, I hope you get it figured out.

Hi Adam. Nice work on the Bellmatic. If you remember from our previous conversation I said I had lots of parts for these watches I believe that somewhere I have a set of the original black striped hands. If you’d like me to look I would gladly send them to you. Just let me know. Keep up the great content and your channel will grow before you know it 😀👍🇬🇧

Thank you very much for the offer. While the black striped hands were original to that dial, the watch is not original. It turns out the dial & bezel are not original to the case. It doesn't bother me though. I'm thoroughly enjoying the watch now. If it were original, I'd probably take you up on your kind offer. Since this watch is not original, I'll just keep it like it is, and you can save your parts to put towards an original watch. I think it still looks pretty good with the other hand set on it. Thank you again for the generous offer though and for the kind words.

I really enjoy you fellas here on You Tube who do watch repair. This watch seemed to me to be the most complex of any I have seen so far. The finished product is beautiful and the band looks great on it. As well as you cleaned and lubricated it, it should last a lifetime.

hi Adam, love your channel great tutorial on the Bellmatic, curious about the direction you wound the {primary} mainspring , most other Seiko's appear to run in the other direction. Must be correct as your amplitude was excellent.
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair 5 месяцев назад
It won't always be in the same direction. Seiko does have some movements that will wind in the other direction. It is something that I take note of on every single watch to make sure that the spring goes back in the same orientation.

Very cool to see how this movement works! Im personally in the market for a older Bellmatic with the UFO style case. Id love to buy a watch that has already been serviced and is in good mechanical shape. Several have caught my eye on ebay but i just have a hard time trusting the listings. But id be a buyer for a ufo style bellmatic, with a dial that catches my eye that has been serviced by someone such as yourself that takes great care in making these watches mechanically sound. Id buy a project watch but im not at the level yet to even consider it myself.

Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Regarding eBay watches, it's always a gamble. I've bought some (although notably few) that I thought would be in bad shape, but I was pleasantly surprised by. I've bought others that the sellers stated were in good shape, all while knowing I'd be servicing it regardless. When I received it, the seller's description was terribly inaccurate. It's a crapshoot for sure, and unfortunately there are several dishonest sellers out there. Make sure you ask for quality pictures of the inside of the watch. If it is a seller who regularly sells watches, you could also ask if they can provide a picture of it on a timegrapher. Many sellers have those in their shops. Best of luck in your search.

@@WeekendWatchRepair good tips. Didnt think about getting pics on a timegrapher. I'm just getting into the hobby. Hopefully in the future I will be confident enough to service these myself. I'm currently starting playing around with a few cheap seiko 5s I've picked up for little money to learn on. I've quickly learned that the cheap tools have little value except maybe to change batteries in quarts watches haha. I have almost instantly replaced the cheap tools with quality one at a time. I'm a 20+ year GM master tech with over 6 figures worth of tools. You would think by now I'd know that you have to have quality tools to do a job.

Those 4006A movements aren't the easiest to service, but they aren't terribly difficult either. This one was my first, but after I finally got in to it, it wasn't overwhelming. I just made sure I had some good reference documentation, kept my parts & screws organized, and it was really not unlike any other watch service, with the exception of timing the alarm wheel.

Thanks for the sub! I have 8+ inch wrists as well and know exactly what you mean regarding those straps. On this watch I wanted to put a real good quality strap on it. I found a company out of Canada called VGreen that makes custom straps to order. They usually ship within a week of ordering, and everything I've bought from them has been fantastic. This is where I get all of my XL length leather straps made. vgreenco.com/

Thank you. This has a domed crystal with a tension ring. I can't recall ever encountering a domed sapphire crystal, and if they are on the market, I assume the manufacturing expenses would be considerable. I would think it is unlikely that there's a specialized sapphire crystal made for this specific watch.

The vintage Seiko market is flooded with Frankenstein Bellmatics all made from parts, fully original watches are hard to find, lovely work on the watch.

Me again 😢. When I put the calendar plate bell does not ring pulling the button out despite there being tension ( just like you do by 57:00 on). Manual says to check disconnecting lever or alarm train but I’m lost. What exactly means the “calendar train”? Any clues on how to isolate the problem? Sorry for boring you again but I feel very frustrated. Best.
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair 10 месяцев назад
The calendar train is the series of gears that connect the calendar mechanism to the hour wheel. The alarm train is the train of gears from the back side of the watch that connect from the keyless works all the way through to the alarm spring arbor, and to the other side of the movement ending in the alarm wheel and alarm hammer. If there is a problem anywhere in this train of gears the alarm will not work. Also double check your alarm setting lever, alarm setting lever spring, and alarm bolt yoke & spring. This can also cause issues. It will also not work if your disconnecting lever is not properly atop the spring and engaging/disengaging with the hammer correctly. Best of luck. I hope you get it sorted out.

@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair 10 месяцев назад
@@sergiohegner8844I saw your video. It's difficult to tell, but there is clearly too much friction on something for that alarm to start on it's own. Did you lubricate the point on the hammer where the alarm wheel contacts it? I'd just recommend disassembling the alarm components from the setting lever to the alarm and make sure everything is super clean, reassemble and lubricate again. It looks like everything is there, but something is binding it up.

Hi Adam, the 4006 Cal uses 2 washer, those being date finger washer and the Setting wheel rocker washer, I have the same movement but unfortunately I'm missing one of them. they are apparently identical to one another, my question is , if you only had one, which would be the more important one to use. Cheers
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair 5 месяцев назад
I'm not sure there is a correct answer to that question! Washers are pretty generic. I'd measure the one you have and see if I could find one online somewhere. Surely someone will sell washers by the size, even ones as small as those.

I have noticed that everyone of those reverse thread screws have like a hamburger icon in them, have you ran into any of those screws like that on a seiko that wasn’t reverse threaded?
@WeekendWatchRepair
@WeekendWatchRepair 2 месяца назад
I’m sure they make them in very old models, but typically anything 60s and after will have the three slots on the screw head on Seiko watches to indicate reverse threaded screws. There are definitely other manufacturers and other movements that do not mark their screw heads that way, but several still do.
