Hunting the Rut! It's time! The rut is when most whitetail hunters spend long hours in the tree stand, and with good reason. Deer are flying all over the place as breeding is taking place in the deer woods. Bucks are either breeding a doe or looking for their next mate. The rut is a great time to catch a buck on his feet during daylight. However, there are a few things you can do to tip things in your favor. In this video we discuss a few things that will help you increase your chances of accomplishing your rut hunting goals.

Got 260 new acres to hunt too late to do hardly any scouting.....Hung some cameras, placed 4 stands but, still have only been over 1/2 the place....This year is basically a hit or miss year.....Good thing is, it's not been hunted in the 5 years the guy has owned it and found a nice shed.....

My best advice. Still hunt . If you got fields and woods . Still hunt , with a rifle that is . Bow works but to get a deer to come within 40 yards of you is a whole different task . Still hunt with a rifle , i saw way more deer still hunting than just sitting all day long .

Great videos. I have really benefitted from the way you break down deer movement. For some reason that is an aspect I always overthink and then usually get wrong. Do you ever break down public land hunts and what to look for in land youre unfamiliar with? Keep up the great work!!
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
Thanks Chad I appreciate it man. So these days most of my hunts are on private land. But the way I would approach public is very similar to how I would try to identify key locations on private. Locate the pinch points and edges created by habitat change, if you can combine a few together / find where several all come together, that's where I would start. Then boots on the ground to find the trails and see where I need to set up. Big difference is on private I can enhance that area by creating a tighter pinch, on public you need to find the trail / hot sign in that area and hunt that. Hope that helps somewhat.

@@whitetailevolution thank you for the reply. It definitely helps. Tonight I hunted my dad's property with my 7 year old son. For the first time ever I saw a buck chasing hot does. It was amazing. Even more amazing I got to experience it with my son.

I've noticed in the woods that I hunt which is surrounded by roads that I'll see does during the day standing just inside the woods along the road or in people's backyards. I'll see this when the Bucks are actively seeking does and the does are trying to get away from bucks. So the does go to places where they think a buck in his right mind would never go during the day time. I see this every year.

Great question and they will still be moving, just not as much during the day due to the heat. Stay tight to pinch points and thick transitional cover. Also WATER! Bucks are moving a lot and will seek out water anyways but when we add this heat to the mix, place a premium on those water sources!!

Great video!! I’m in NC and the phases of the rut seem to depend tremendously on the weather and pressure. I’m a traditional bow hunter and have been challenged this season with my early sits. Not sure how to get in there at noon without spooking any bucks. My stand is between bedding and water. Appreciate any suggestions!! Just retired from the military; am rotating my stands based on wind and activity on cams. Thanks
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
Thanks Fabio and THANK YOU for your service! The key to getting in tight to bedding is some sort of screen, whether that's topography or something manmade. You need to make sure you can slip by without those deer hearing or seeing you. Too late for this year, but analyze the area as you enter / exit to see where you need to incorporate screening this offseason. Good luck this year.

The deer here in central North Carolina are wise to the calling and rattling and only go the other direction and spook them because every Darrell & his other brother Darrell are in the woods playing the grunt tube, bleat can , rattle bag & hanging scent on dip sticks like Christmas 🎄 ornaments and these deer here in North Carolina especially mature bucks have encountered more than one Darrell in the woods playing a deer woods musical 🎶 😂

Very very untrue about blind calling… Over half a dozens 160”-190” been killed within 10 miles from me, strictly by blind calling/blind rattling. Eastern iowa, no different that Michigan. I’d argue iowa is more dense
@rfgonzo
@rfgonzo Год назад
I hunt Michigan state lands and 95% of my bucks are called in with blind grunt calling. Now not all grunt tubes are equal. most of the ones you find in the market and on hunting shows are pure garbage. Rattling however doesn't work for me as well in Michigan so I stick with the grunt tube. A doe bleet works great to during chasing, I will put the grunt tube down and grab the bleet If I see a buck chasing a doe. She will run him right to your stand and stop giving you a shot. I have taking lots of deer this way. I believe she does this to get him away from her as she's not ready to breed and thinks your another doe to get him off her.
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
I know a few guys that have success with rattling and blind calling but it has a very low success rate where we hunt. Too many hunters going crazy with the rattling sequences. I've watched the oldest buck on the block sneak away from a neighbor who was trying to rattle one in.. Sounded like two of your 160" Iowa deer going at it. The Michigan 130" wanted nothing to do with it lol.
@rogergauthier2769
@rogergauthier2769 8 месяцев назад
That's untrue also I saw a buck . Did a doe grunt , he turned my way , stopped and was just scuffing the ground and I hit the call again and he turned and walked into the woods

Some times raking a tree with some antlers mite get him to come instead of the grunt call that's about it we'll explained sir 🦌🦃🇱🇷

Great suggestion! I know some guys that have tied a few sheds together with a long rope, then bounce them up and down from the stand to simulate two bucks getting into it. More realistic with the leaves rustling as well.

So does this mean if I’m getting midnight pics of big bucks I’ll see them in daylight in the rut? I’m new to hunting deer
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
Great question and there are a lot of variables to really answer that one. But if you were getting midnight pictures of bucks before the rut then I do think you have a much better chance of seeing them in daylight during the rut. They were likely somewhere else during the day but will check your property at some point within the next few weeks. Save the pictures of when you have daylight bucks, a lot of times they return the following year around the same date.
@louisbrownell7379
@louisbrownell7379 Год назад
What if you hunt a 40- 80 acres of land? I saw 4 does and 4 bucks hardly no movement in that area. How do you hunt that area
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
There's a lot to unpack there. Could be a variety of factors that lead to a lack of deer sightings. Major ones would be a lack of quality habitat, low deer density, poor access to stand locations or over hunting the property.

@louisbrownell7379 Год назад

How often should you wait between calls have rattle bag an grunt call southwest Virginia
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
I typically do not blind call. Mainly because I have not had a lot of success with it and I have seen bucks run in the opposite direction of my neighbors who are trying to call them in.. But I would say blind calling every 30 minutes would be ok if you wanted to try it.

What is it with Halloween? Superstition? I’m curious and I’ve seen arguments both ways
@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
I think it's likely a combination of both superstition and a good day to be in the woods. Where we hunt it feels like this is a day when a few of the first does go into heat and that gets the older bucks up moving around. Because the rut kicks off at the same time every year, this stretch (10/28 - 11/2) always seems to be a very good time to be in a tree on our properties. So could very well be a bit of confirmation bias, but there's also a lot of evidence on our trail cameras to suggest we need to be hunting!

@whitetailevolution
@whitetailevolution Год назад
Every area, every property has a different age structure, a different ceiling. Where we hunt in Michigan we have a lot of deer but the oldest buck on the block most years is 3 years old. There are way too many factors to get into why that is, but it is what it is. There are some areas of the state where bucks don't make it to see their 2nd birthday.. You have to do everything you can to try to get your property to reach it's maximum effectiveness and once you're there, continue to enjoy chasing the older bucks in the neighborhood, whatever that means for your area. Some areas that might be a 2 year old, other areas that might be a 7 year old. For us, it's 3 year old bucks with the occasional 4 year old once every 5-6 years. Good luck in Maine.
