I met Ruth Handler at a book signing in 1994 in Colorado Springs, Colorado where I was living at time. She signed two of my 35th anniversary Barbie doll boxes. I still have them today still in their boxes. Ruth Handler was such a beautiful person that when she spoke to you it made you feel like she had been a life long friend. She made such a lasting impression on my life

@@seancarson7103so sorry you never got to know her. Ruth seems like she was just an absolute delight to meet ❤Her invention has bought joy to so many little girls for generations. I grew up majorly in love with Barbie after my late grandpa gave me the 3rd Barbie doll I ever owned when I was 4 years old. I had always loved Barbie but I was especially just absolutely fascinated by the particular Barbie doll my grandfather gave me. She was an All American Barbie and I was obsessed with Barbie’s tiny Reebok sneakers and her neon blue eyeshadow and gorgeous green eyes. 😊 I’m in my mid 30’s now, but I still have my All American Barbie & she’s displayed on a shelf in my closet on a stand where I’m able to keep her safe and in good condition. My Barbie brings me so much joy because whenever I miss my grandfather I just hold my Barbie and remember the beautiful happy memories I had with my grandfather. Also as a little girl that grew up with Barbie she really was a doll that allowed little girls to be able to imagine we girls could grow up to be anything we wanted cause we grew up in a world where in playing with Barbie dolls it wasn’t abnormal to think women could be a dr, a pilot, an astronaut or even a businesswoman. That doll taught young girls they can be just as equal as men when it comes to ambitions and worth. I had such a joyful fun childhood with my Barbie dolls & it’s thanks to Ruth.

I think there should be a movie about Ruth Handler. There are some interesting things that I didn't know about behind the making of Barbies. She like the first woman to take a big job like men that women can not do at that time that change jobs for women to take big jobs as men of today.

RUTH THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! You changed & shaped the world! You made every human on Earth happier! (everyone were once a kid and had at least 1 barbie)... I loved your dolls, I still do and I collect them! There will be no other toy which will reach that fame & popularity (maybe only can be compared with Teddy bear)... I also really like this interview, particularly the part about 70s era, explains a lot, because dolls were really down in that period (until superstars came in late 70s). In the 90s barbie reached her golden age, although not that popular anymore, but even today, 60 yrs later, she is still main part of kids world. THANK YOU! REST IN PEACE! YOU SUCCEEDED, YOU MADE SOMETHING WHICH WILL LAST F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-figured doll was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. The Lilli doll was based on a popular character appearing in a comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper Bild. Lilli was a blonde bombshell, a working girl who knew what she wanted and was not above using men to get it. The Lilli doll was first sold in Germany in 1955, and although it was initially sold to adults, it became popular with children who enjoyed dressing her up in outfits that were available separately.

Funny how this is never mentioned in the interview. Unless Ruth does talk about it, but they cut it out to perpetuate the myth.
@alexandersmith4731
@alexandersmith4731 Год назад
@@paintwithmusicit's not really a myth, people do know about Lili by just googling it, while Ruth didn't create the imagery of the original first Barbie, she and her team does do the rest of Barbie imagery, and Barbie's face changed drastically in the middle of 70s

Thank you for sharing! I did a google search to learn more… *1956 - @johnhoward6393’s comment, basically Ruth got “something” from the German doll Lilli while on vacation *1959- Barbie doll debut *1964 - Mattel acquired the rights to Bild Lilli Conclusion- Ruth is one savvy businesswoman but it doesn’t mean she’s a bad person for using the Lilli doll however she did. She recognized the competition and paid that German company enough that they thought it was worth shutting down shop ❤ go Ruth!

Like what was mention on this documentary, at first there was minor criticism to the Barbie doll. Because some people from the early years of Barbie, have criticized about the breasts on the body of the dolls. But because the sales of the Dolls got a lot popular, the censorship and criticism have stopped. And if you look at the early dolls, I think they're body designs were okay. But until the 1980s and the 1990s, the manufacturer's at Mattel made new Barbie dolls with triangular torsos. I remembered as a kid, I thought the bodies of the dolls at the time look really weird. And not only that, a few girls and young women got obsessed with the body of the Barbie dolls. That some of them eventually had plastic surgery, and wanting to show the world but they wanted to look like a real life Barbie doll. With a triangular torso just like the 1980's and 1990's Barbie dolls. And when that happened, it caused big criticism and big censorship to those dolls during those two decades. So it wasn't until the 2000s, when Mattel decided to fix the body of future Barbie dolls to look like a real human woman body. And after that the massive criticism and censorship had stopped. So I'm glad that Barbie dolls nowadays don't have triangular torsos, because as a kid I thought it was really weird. And I had no idea a few girls and young women would be obsessed with it, and would have plastic surgery to show the world that they wanted to be a real life Barbie doll. So the way they make Barbie dolls nowadays, with inspiration of the real human body especially women. Is so better and advance for Barbie dolls nowadays, that the bodies of the Dolls don't really look weird. Unlike from the 1990s and 1980s. So with new body designs for all Barbie dolls nowadays, I'm glad there's no more mass criticism and mass censorship about the dolls anymore. But at the same time, Mattel is trying to use the dolls to educate children and little girls. That it is possible that they can be of what they want to be, and to make their dreams come true and hopefully change the world. Thanks to Barbie as being a big role model. And at the same time, Mattel is trying to turn Barbie and the other character dolls into animated characters. Making them more popular than ever, instead of just being toy dolls. And I'm glad that Mattel is moving with that idea as well. Because I think it's a good idea to make Barbie and the other character dolls which originally started with that idea, as animated characters as well. Having them as animated characters is a smart move, and a very good idea. And just let everybody know, Mattel and Disney had joined forces from before and created a Barbie Life show for Epcot at Walt Disney World in the mid-90s. And the show was called the magical world of Barbie. There was even special meet-and-greet appearances of Barbie Skipper and Ken at Epcot as well. However I found out there had been mixed reviews of Barbie being at Epcot, a lot of people at the time suggested that the show and Barbie should move to Disney's Hollywood Studios which at the time was known as Disney MGM Studios. After all of those complaints, and mixed reviews of Barbie being at Epcot, Disney and Mattel decided to cancel the show and the meet and greets. Afterwards everybody thought Barbie would not be seen at Walt Disney World ever again. However it didn't stop there, Barbie merchandise featuring Disney material would be available years later. And I think it's still continuing to this day. And so I think you would be a good idea for Disney and Mattel to join forces again, and create a Barbie Disney theme park attraction or ride. When is the most forgotten rides of Disney California Adventure when the theme park first open, with a dark ride called Superstar limo. Nowadays you can watch the ride on RU-vid, the attraction received mixed reviews as well. Because people complain that the ride was too cartoony, there were weird and creepy looking puppets when you see them in both the pre-show and the main ride. But overall it was criticized of being too weird. Now the ride was replaced by Monsters Inc Mike and Sulley to the rescue. I love that ride as well, but nowadays as an adult I think the ride is too cute for me. And for some adults, they have outgrown the ride and some find it too cute for them as well. Because Mike and Sulley to the rescue it's supposed to be a ride for kids, and that the whole family can enjoy together. so for some of them and myself, and know that Superstar limo was there originally, we sort of wanted to come back but to be better than ever. So if Disney ever return Superstar limo to Disney California Adventure's hollywoodland. They should join forces with Mattel and use Barbie as the main star of the ride, along with Ken Skipper Stacie and Chelsea, mr. And mrs. Roberts Barbie's parents, and the other characters from the animated show Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures. And if that ever happens, they should call it Barbie's Superstar limo where is the attraction can be based on Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures the animated show. And the story should be for the attraction, that Barbie is having a big birthday party at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. And that Superstar celebrities of Hollywood and other entertainment Industries, of different kinds like movie stars, TV stars, rock stars, pop stars you name it are invited to Barbie's Hollywood birthday party. And of course the superstars celebrities I supposed to be us and other people, that will see and experience the entire attraction from both the pre-show and the ride. I hope Disney and Mattel can do this idea someday. If they do, I want to pretend to be a rockstar throughout the entire attraction. And if Disney and Mattel ever do this for Hollywood land at Disney California Adventure, I believe it will be a big success. Because I believe kids of all ages will love it, as well as little girls, young women and adults. Because the idea of the attraction it's supposed to be a ride for the entire family, and for Barbie fans. If this idea ever happens, I believe you will make the phenomenon of Barbie to still be popular and to continue. And if Disney decides to require Mattel as part of their business dialogue, and to include Barbie as a Disney family member character. I think that would be very cool as well, if something like that would happen

The amazing thing to me has always been the very fine, very detailed, well-constructed, tasteful and sophisticated clothing of the original doll (later clothing was not as nice). It looked like the clothes were sewn on tiny sewing machines and the knitted things knitted with tiny needles. At age 11, in 1961, I would save up my 50 cents-per-hour babysitting money and when I had $4.00 I would ride my bike to the toy store and be thrilled looking at all the lined up packages of Barbie outfits, knowing I could buy one with my $4.00 and take it home. I don’t know what the big deal is about breasts. There were many other grownup dolls before Barbie that had breasts and people weren’t obsessed with them like they are now. And I never thought I would grow up to look like Barbie. As Ruth Handler said, it was all about the activities Barbie could participate in.

Ken's cause of death is a controversial topic. Ruth came out saying he died of a brain tumor, but several people and a memoir as well say different. What it states on wiki is that he most likely died of AIDS complications. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to deal with the loss of your son and have lie about the cause to the world. It was probably really painful for everyone involved--especially his wife and 3 children.

The nurse term used today...is not confusing...it's not...a doctor and that's obvious.... In other words, the term nurse for a female nurse is in appropriate..the nomenclature must change to nurse assistant for what is known as nurse today.. The term nurse assistant is not used because it didn't exist as a job...and a nurse was a female doctor back then...so in other words if you call a nurse a nurse assitant, they're offended they're female????
