I had one of the Honda 2K generator for almost 15 years. I recently purchased the upgraded 2,200 Watt version, as nice as the original times 3! Great video as usual Jim.
This will run really quiet of I had to stay in a area where I wanted it to be quiet. Aka of I went to work for 4 hours is it quiet enough to keep my animals cool during the heat waves I get. So they're safe and no one will hear it going? Thanks 😊
Thanks for a very informative and clear video! I might add that after installation of the easystart, one must use shorepower to start and stop the now modified a/c five times (5x) to program the easystart. The sixth start, and every start thereafter, can be conducted on a generator. The thing is actually learning your a/c during these initial five starts. Pretty cool!
I need to get my printer up so I can print some of these comments and put things into a booklet for when I decide to else and do this come spring. Jim you need to make a small booklets for all these things. So we can download them in an emergency lol 😆 so far I git my batteries solar, all the connections the rv. I'm still yet to get a few things but I need a quieter geni and this box fit my ac. man where was this in the summer when I struggled and needed to leave with my animals...ahhhh i been an essential driver for groceries for just over 2 months now. So I need to leave the rv for a fe hours each day if that an day animals need to stay safe cool and so no oen will bother my rv while I'm gone. Knock on the door etc and I'm.not sure how to do that of anyone sees me leave. I am going to get cameras ro my cell as well. Hoping if anything goes wrong I can get tehre fast. I'm usually 30 to an hr away on a delivery. But I need the job too. wicked video Jim. Thank you
I’m having problems running my 2 a/c units on my motorhome during the day time one of them go to shed , but at night they both work perfect mine runs on a 30 amp , I have an adapter to convert to a 50 amp but it doesn’t fix the problem any suggestions
I have a 1600 BTU Marine Air AC that I run of a Honda 2200i generator. The generator starts the ac every time , struggles a little but not a big problem. The problem is the generator runs out of fuel over night. I guess it lasts for about 5 hours. I set the ac usually to 76 so much of the time when the generator is running the ac is off and the generator runs for nothing. I'm wondering if anybody knows it the generator will start the ac when the generator is set to ECO moderne and the ac is connected through an Easy Start. The Normal start up current for the ac is 73A. With an Easy Start the start up current is 32A. Will the Honda 2200i be able to start the AC when it's running in ECO mode ? Thanks for any help!
That's a good question. Everyone I've ever talked to said to take it off of eco mode but I don't think they've tried it with an easy start. Unfortunately, I have no way to test this so I'm afraid I can't answer that. If anybody else has the answer please comment. Thanks for the questions and happy camping. Jim
Great video Jim! Using the Easy Start 364, how long did the Apex last running the 15K BTU A/C unit on the Inergy Apex? Also have you tried running a small electric heater to the Apex? How did it do?
The Kodiak and the Apex can struggle with heaters. I did a review video that covers that here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ArU-4N6gFA.html. Take care and happy camping. Jim
The only thing you didn't say was how rough or easy the generator was running while the AC was running? Was the generator working hard or sound like it was working too hard?
I added one to our Wildwood 171 last year. Works great!! Plus, when I am hooked up to the shore power at our house I can even run the AC (only) off of 110.
BLESS YOU, JIM! i have been searching high and low looking for a solution to powering my dometic in my trailer using a solar generator and every "professional" told me it couldnt be done. THANK YOU !!!!! i cant wait to set this up!
While it absolutely can be done using a solar generator, you need to keep in mind it takes a lot of battery power to keep a 15000 btu air conditioner running. This video demonstrates the easy start 364's ability to allow a small solar generator like this to start it, but these particular units would not be enough to continuously run it for any significant amount of time. I would honestly recommend a 2,000 watt solar generator with 300 to 400 amp hours of battery capacity and 500 watts of solar minimum. That would run a 15,000 BTU air conditioner for several hours or more. I have other videos on my channel that do experiments regarding how long these types of units can run an air conditioner of that size. I just don't want to mislead you when it comes to practical applications. An air conditioner of this size requires a lot of power. Thanks for the comment and happy camping.
Dometic 13500btu. Champion 2500 inverter gen. Followed your install directions. AC starts up just fine however after 3 minutes the generator goes into a stall which causes the compressor to turn off. This cycle repeats over and over. Any thoughts? Love your approach of the summary up front followed by the details.
I would contact easystart. They're very helpful with this kind of thing. You may have to make your easystart relearn the compressor. If I work all I had to do that as well. Good luck.
Very interesting. Facing the “ground”? Or, facing “down”? That is unclear to an old dog like me. Since the beginning of time air conditioning compressors and all electric motors for that matter have been designed to draw hi amps on start up. It would seem to me this device may increase the life of a motor - less current = less heat. BUT, is it possible that dragging out start up in a way motors are not designed to start may be damaging to a motor?
It should prolong the life of the motor. The easy start learns your air conditioning starting capacity and habits with the first five times you turn it on when plugged into Shore power. Then it uses that information to make it easiest for the motor to start. I love it because sometimes I use an extension cord at a friend's house and I need to run the air conditioner and it always used to trip their breaker. Now that I have the easy start I can run the air conditioner all day without tripping there Breakers. So I'm definitely a fan
Absolutely. I used to trip Breakers whenever I used a smaller extension cord to plug in to a friend's house or my own. And now a really small Home Depot 50 foot extension cord is running the AC all day with no issues. That's a pretty marked Improvement. Enjoy.
Yes, I have an Airstream that has 2 Dometic 15,000BTU units on top. Airstream's service department in Austin said the warranty for the AC's would be voided if I did that. I did it anyway......but I rigged mine in a manner that I can quick disconnect everything and put back to factory specs when I turn my coach in for its annual warranty inspection service. Micro-Air also offers a 2 year warranty on their product that covers your AC as well if their product goes haywire. You're probably wondering why I do an annual warranty inspection......Airstream of Austin, TX offers a lifetime warranty program on all 12 major components to Airstream coaches (AC's, heating, plumping, etc.) and to maintain that eligibility the coach has to be taken into any authorized Airstream service center annually. However if they find an easy start the AC portion becomes voided.......So I installed both of mine like Jim did but I left all the factory stuff in place. When it came to the blue wire. I just took a 3 way spade connector and used that so I didn't have to cut the blue wire. Everything that way is easy and quick to disconnect and reconnect back to factory for inspection. When reconnecting the easy start I do have to go back through the re-learn process but that only takes 30 mins. Cheers!
Does anyone know if newer camper AC units come with these installed already? Or is this just always going to be a thing to have to install if using solar/batteries, or small generators?
They typically do not have a soft start system installed. You can install it if you need help maybe using a smaller extension cord occasionally at a friend's house to keep from tripping Breakers or when using a smaller generator or inverter.
@@fullmoonadventureclub what would be an adequate gas generator to get a 14k BTU AC going? I currently have a 4k watt generator. Would that be enough without and easy start installed?
@@wadevid absolutely. Your air conditioner will usually take around 1000 to 1300 Watts while running and you probably need double that to get it going. You should be absolutely fine. I have a 15000 BTU air conditioner and a 4000 Watt generator and it's able to run the air conditioner plus other systems in the RV with no problems.
@@wadevid a 4000 kilowatt generator will use about .6 gallons of gas per hour depending on the load you have it under.so to run a generator that size for about 8 hours would take approximately 5 gallons of gas. But that's only if you're using most of the 4000 Watts.
Can u use this on dometic class c fridges when plugging into places taht will not run the compressor in fridge. My fridge works on propane but when I try to plug into 30 Amp on someone's property it won't run my fridge. Compressor goes on and off shuts my fridge down. I can run it off my generator as well but choose not to I have a champion new 4250 rv ready but its loud lasts forever for my ac etc so I been liking into other options without the generator or a quieter one as I need to go off grid ans nit by choice. I'm in a bad situation. I'm biding my time till the snow goes. As I'm nit prepared for this minus 30 with my dog and cat. I own a older 89 or 98 class c I just bought for this reason.
Actually, I believe, what you removed is the factory "hard start" kit. The start capacitor itself is the silver one that stays in there. It appears to me you have replaced the factory HS kit with the MicroAire unit; which is supposed to be the "Cadillac" of HS boxes. Question is, did it allow better starting?
The easy start and air conditioner should work at just about any altitude. But you are right on the edge with that generator. A 13,000 BTU air conditioner will use around a thousand Watts while it's running. The easy start should help a lot with the initial surge so you should be okay. But you probably won't be able to run much else. I hope that helps.
@@fattie2550 Yup, altitude (lower air pressure) and heat start to drop the horsepower rating of gas powered engines, thereby dropping their ratings quite a bit. I think I remember derate power 2% to 3% for every 1000 feet above sea level. So at 7000 feet, it's supposedly a 14-21% drop in output power. a 1600 watt running (I assume you mean an EU2000I Honda) power might be 1264 watts at 7000 feet if power dropped 3% per 1000 feet (79%).
Nice idea, but I don't hear anything about the power cord coming out of the generator and coming into the RV/travel trailer.. SIZE, LENGTH, STYLE CONNECTIONS. 115/AC OR 30 AMP RV. While you may be able to run the Rooftop air off this setup. your POWER CORD is the weak link... Most of those little gensets do NOT have a 30 AMP outlet.. SO your dropping down to a 15 AMP service or at the most 20 AMP with a regular extension cord... That is what's gonna get hot... Saying that... You can use your RV 30 AMP cord to the genset w/ a 115/30 AMP adapter... a better solution... But not for everyday use...
The 30 amp necessity is to start the ac. Once started it doesnt continue to pull 30 amps. I think the generator size you need to consider also depends on the accessories you intend to use with it. If fridge and water heater are using gas only then that cuts a lot out. So you are really only left with tv, radio, microwave perhaps. So with the ac drawing about 13 amps, that leaves you 2 amps for other accessories.
