🏖️Stan and Rhonda from Over The Hill Adventures head to another pre-season destination, Jalama Beach County Park with their new Grand Design Influence 2903RL fifth wheel. This relatively small beach campground is a true hidden gem. Campgrounds on the beach in California are very rare. Not knowing what to expect, they traverse the small, tight road for 15 miles in the hills of Santa Barbara County before reaching the campground. Once they get there, they realize they have found a beautiful beach campground that very few people know about.
This campground was brought to their attention by a friend who took a picture of a bench that memorialized the murder of Detective Jeremiah MacKay on Feb 12, 2013 by Christopher Dorner. When Stan was working as a Homicide Detective with San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department he was with Detective Jeremiah MacKay an hour before his death and watched over his body an hour after his death. Later, Stan also assisted in the documentation of his autopsy. To this day it was one of the most tragic days of Stan's career in law enforcement.

So glad we have no desire to go bigger,longer. A lot of the older parks cant handle bigger rigs. We're in a seasonal site at a Christian campground. Lots of low branches. We have family history at this camp and asked if we could volunteer to do some work on the grounds. Mainly triming trees. They gladly excepted! Its been a wonderful experience!

Regarding tight turn getting out of a pull through. Sometimes the best option is to back out. Have had to that a number of times to be 'safe.' Good video :)

You guys are in our hood ! Jalama beach. I grew up camping there. As an adult with a 5th wheel the trips are very few and far between now days the road out there is not my friend ! Ha. Another great adventure that you shared with us. Getting used to a fifth wheel, a little bit of a change going from a bumper pull. We have not made the jump to a diesel yet so we downsize from 30 foot fifth wheel down to a 25 foot bumper pole much easier to get around and easier to pull. We are looking at selling our second home and maybe next year make the big jump to a diesel.

Hi Bob, we find it so much easier to pull with our 5th wheel than our bumper pull. However, we do have to be more cautious of the height restrictions. We are planning Season 8 and looked at campground in a Washington State Park. It was beautiful and we could fit but the tree coverage was too low. To be honest on a diesel the only thing that was disappointing was the fuel mileage! 10 to 12mpg better than a gasser. However, I would not change it for the world the stability and the exhaust brake makes a set it forget it. We are very happy with our Chevy 2500HD Turbo Diesel. Seeing the problems with Ford and Dodge made it a no brainer. The Dodge 2500 payload is ridiculously low. My cousin had a brand new one the independent suspension and his payload was lower than my 1/2 ton. Definitely go with the leaf springs on a Dodge and hopefully they got rid of the CP4 fuel pump. Ford had the same problem including the death wobble. Chevy also had a few issues. We so far are very lucky! My old 98’ 24 Valve Dodge Ram Cummins was a beast! Thanks for another great video, y'all! Those low branches made us cringe. We had an up-close-and-personal encounter with a low-hanging branch. We were leaving an RV Park in Midland, Texas. I did the usual walk around but missed the TV antenna not being fully retracted. We drove under the tree and ...... B-R-R-R-R-R-A-K! 😬😬 Yep! Nailed it! Thanks for sharing the story about your colleague in law enforcement. We could tell you were still bothered by the memory 11 years later. Y'all have a beautiful rig! We're looking at a small 5th-wheel under 30 feet in length. We're a bit reluctant, though, given all the horror stories we've heard about quality and frame issues. We'll shop around. Hello Bob and Dottie, it is always good to hear from you! You two are one of our faithful followers. We enjoy your experiences and knowledge. These stories of problems are over the top and if you do a deep dive you’ll understand negativity makes folks click on their video. Complain about something and you’ll get clicks. Unfortunately, there some bad and sad situation out there don’t get me wrong. However, out on the ground there is more positive than negative. We have traveled in our new rig for 6,000 miles. The quality is beyond question and we have had no problems. The problems are on the bigger rigs over 17,000 lbs. Not the small ones like ours. When you pull a fifth wheel overloaded and the pull another trailer behind it with a side by side plus a Harley Davidson the fifth wheel is bound to fail. It’s not made to that! Don’t be worried you folks are so wise in RVing you will be fine. We don’t have time to worry about the little things. Remember we are not guaranteed tomorrow. It’s time to Live Your Best Life! @OverTheHillAdventures - Stan and Rhonda, y'all make a good point! Like the evening news, "If it bleeds, it leads!" The more lurid the story, the more it gets likes and clicks. Failures seem to also occur when the 5th-wheel or trailer is taken over rough roads (like taking the trailer off-roading). We've done that with shorter, older trailers years ago going up to remote drill locations in the mountains. No way I would do that with a larger trailer (longer than 20 ft). These things are designed for highways and maybe a dirt road or two. Also, overloading is apparently a serious issue, too; lots of storage space that people just have to fill up with more stuff (that they will probably never use!) 😂😂 We'll keep y'all posted! I'm sorry you had to live that experience. We have had a couple of tragic officer targeted shootings in my state in Fargo ND in the last 10 years, one as recently as last July when a deranged terrorist wanna-be targeted officers responding to a traffic accident. One officer lost his life, another was a hero for neutralizing the threat. The shooter had other plans≥ It is a changing world we live in for sure. @@karlamartins2761no I was on the Homicide Team that investigated the shooting. We wear suit and ties. I was on the mountain but was assigned to care Jeremiah’s body. The hard part is they did not tell me he had already passed. The hardest thing was to clean him up so his wife could see him. That tore my heart out. Then later I assisted in his autopsy to obtain all evidence.

How did you like pulling the rig through the LA traffic ? Thats our usual when heading north up the coast unfortunately... In those tight spaces, although your new rig is a lot bigger, it might actually be more maneuverable because of it being a 5th wheel - do you find it so (excepting the height difference of course - those trees were tough! ) ? Good you got to see your fallen colleagues bench Stan - sorry for that situation but at least you got to see it. Great episode we love that area - Enjoy the rest of the trip!

Hello Bob and Dang, I would 100% recommend going to a 5th wheel! So much easier!! The height does concern me but it is easier to pull in the wind than the bumper pull. We have already done 6,000 miles. We have already completed filming Season 7. We absolutely love it!! Thank you for always joining us!! I remember hearing about the incident on the news but had no idea of the details which were covered in depth in the story. That was really something to go through. Glad you are okay Stan.
