John and Mercedes are giving good advice. I'm a former first responder. In Oklahoma the OHP has specially trained officers called "size and weight enforcement" or SWE. They carry in their vehicles special mobile equipment to weigh and calculate your vehicle and tow vehicle weights. Officers will generally not call an SWE unit for run of the mill accidents involving an RV. However if there is a more serious accident involving injuries they often times will be called. It doesn't require a fatality for the SWE to investigate. These officers also patrol the highways routinely, so if you are pulled over by one they may elect to do a random check. It takes them less than 10 minutes in most cases to weigh anything on wheels. I believe it's always a good idea to run your vehicle over Cat scales and be familiar with your weights and limits.

While I only have a small trailer, I hit the CAT Scales before any trip of significant length. I am always below my tow and axle weight ratings but doing this give me peace of mind that I didn't mess up and do something that causes an imbalance. For the $13 or so it costs its money well spent. Doesn't hurt there is one on my way out of town either.

In Oz, our HWP don't have scales but special Police units do, very similar and we also have RMS scalies ( these are DOT inspectors) that usually setup roadside inspections at State borders but with Covid and now borders are closed again, they're on major roads throughout each State. The reason they setup at Boards is we have Japanese light trucks towing upto 3.5 Tonne (7716 lbs) and people get caught out with GCM and GVM hence fines Government loves fining you. I have a RAM 2500 and Caravan of 3.5 tonne so it's smile and wave, I don't get a flag in.

I have had the most excellent experience with Marty over the phone and by email over the last couple days. We are going to pick up our first RV in less than two weeks, so when I followed the directions after submitting my contact form and emailed directly letting him know about our time crunch, he was very quick to respond. I am a detail-oriented person, and he patiently walked through every question I asked, giving a thorough explanation to everything I threw at him. I even sent tables I'd created his way with different comparators I was looking at! Marty is seriously one of the most patient, helpful insurance agents I've had the pleasure of working with. Thank you so much for this recommendation! I would have never found him, otherwise.

I sold insurance many years ago and I know who to talk to. Have a real "fun time" policy covering what you need. I also have a million dollar umbrella policy. You even need protection if somebody trips and hurts themself cutting through your site. I have heard many people complain about insurance companies when they should have shopped for coverage not cost. I say all the time that, "cheap often cost you more."

Just watched your post on insurance. I am not an agent. I am an RVer having recently finished a 3 year tour of the US in a 43' motorhome. I can tell you from personal experience, you are still under insured. We were just driving our daily pickup in the Sierra's just outside of Truckee, California. It had been snowing and we drove over the summit with chains on. We were hit while removing the chains by a person illegally in this country, with a $25,000 max payout policy. That situation left us completely high and dry for recovery from him. Fortunately we had uninsured motorist coverage. That repaired our truck, but the amount did not come close to dealing with injuries to my spine and the traumatic brain injury my wife suffered. The financial limits to our policy were severely lacking and didn't get us back to normal. We now have $1 million in uninsured and under insured coverage on all of our vehicles.

I don’t know about RV insurance. But on regular auto insurance, a lot of people decline being insured for medical payments because they already have separate health insurance. Paying for medical insurance on your car insurance is double covering yourself. Now if you do get in an accident you would come out ahead because you’d (maybe) get double paid. But if you drive safely, which you should be doing anyway, you probably won’t get hurt. So paying for double coverage in case something does happen seems excessive.
@Assassin1959

@@RVOddCouple By the way, I called them to get a quote and it came out double the amount for the year and that wasn't even including my tow. Staying with GEICO for now and the search continues.

Howdy from Austin. Always read your policy. Twice if you have to. It’s your legal contract with the carrier. All carriers are ready to take your money and ready to deny your claim. Even the best known brands and the ones on TV all of the time. Many years of litigation has proven this true. My clients have had to fight to obtain what they paid for against their own carrier on home owners, auto uninsured/underinsured etc. (when you have a covered claim and are entitled to the insurance proceeds as a matter of law). Please note. When things go south and you file a claim you are dealing with the other people’s adjuster and maybe your own adjuster. The agent that sold the policy is not really able to help settle the claim. I’m long time boat owner and my independent insurance agent told me long ago he used progressive for his boat and I shopped around and progressive was an agreed value for boat and agreed value for the trailer. When I bought the rv got quotes for Motorhome and most comprehensive policy for best price was progressive. Same limits as you posted on the video. I pay about $750/year. Which is less than your quote but I’m not running a business out of the RV. I can run the quote for doing that and then post it. I vouch for RV and boat insurance with progressive. Both are agreed value policies.

We had a different scenario but same result. We had good insurance while on the road, all the upper end limits, medical etc. Then we decided to come off the road and put the camper in a permanent spot in a campground near out sticks and bricks. We added a deck and top and got in touch with our insurance company(USAA) to increase our coverage only to learn that that since we weren't traveling we were not covered at all. What sense does that make more of a chance to be in an accident and a claim made ,covered ,sitting still little to no chance for an accident claim not covered. Now we have an agent who's speciality is RV's and we are now properly covered.

Great info guys. With our first RV we made the mistake of not having GAP coverage. That screwed us on a total hail damage claim. We now have State Farm which is how we found that we can get coverage if we are full time. With State Farm, the coverage depends on whether we own and insure a home or not. That can change the options. Now we had a hail storm that damaged home and RV in driveway. We have to file 2 different claims and pay 2 different deductibles. Tons of fun. Happy travels.

We've watched most everything you've done and this video is especially valuable. We've purchased our 5th wheel and added it to our AAA auto policy, which is good because someone hit it at the place we had it stored and damaged the front cap. Fortunately it's covered. Just didn't think the first time towing the trailer would be to a repair shop. I've been thinking about how we would have to modify our coverage when we are living in it, plus the contents, etc. Also the reminder about getting our stuff in storage insured. I hadn't thought about that. You guys are awesome. Really appreciate your servant hearts. Thank you.

Hi John, hi Mercedes! You’re so right about all those points regarding RV insurance. Absolutely, insurance is a very tricky but very necessary thing in RVing, whether you’re full-time or just a weekender or summertime traveler. Your friend, Marty, really is a terrific guy in explaining just where you were lacking in insurance. One other thing about weight though...when you have your “loaded” RV weighed, especially if you own a MOTORHOME! When you get professionally weighed, you MUST include the passengers who will be riding in the RV. It’s not just how much water, canned goods, hand tools, Instant Pots and toasters, clothes, hoses, and pretty outdoor string lights are being carried. PEOPLE (unfortunately 😬😳!) carried along with those other things are going to be the greatest single source of your added vehicle weight! Hope this helps you and other Odd Squadders (is that a real word?!) when figuring your weight. Love ya all, Virginia

Thank you, John & Mercedes! Because of you I found out that I was not covered by Geico for Full Replacement value. They would not give me FRV. They did not offer me FRV when I took out the policy. The Geico agent said they do offer it now when people call to insure their RV. We are not full-timers but we ended up using Good Sam Insurance who uses National General Insurance. I had a very positive experience with the young man who signed us up and we pay no more than we were paying for Geico for Total Replacement Value. Now we have TRV through 2024 and great coverage for comprehensive, collision and liability. We have a Good Sam and a AAA RV roadside assistance coverage. We are covered by more than one roadside service because I we watched a video that says to carry more than one because in some areas of the country it is easier to get roadside service if you have multiple plans to call. And thanks for reminding us about being overweight. We don't full-time RV and try not to carry a whole lot of stuff with us.

When we bought our trailer in 2009 ($30,000) we chose National General. They said for the first 5 years they would pay full replacement cost. After that, for as long as we stayed with them they would pay us what we originally paid for the trailer if it was ever totaled. We have turned in a couple of claims over $3,000 each and sent in pictures with quotes from the dealer for repair. They paid with no hassle. If our 11 year old trailer is totaled they will pay us $30,000. The coverage included about $8,000 for contents. We have been very pleased with the service and coverage.

Our longtime auto insurance company is not oriented to the needs of RV coverage, so when we recently ordered our first RV, we called Charlotte Insurance after my wife watched this video. We're very happy we did. Agency president Marty Karriker and his assistant Clark Harrell were outstandingly conscientious, with great follow-through and with patience in responding to our questions and concerns, to make sure everything went right. We really appreciate the personal treatment. Before trying Marty I had earlier contacted a different insurance company with an RV insurance specialty, which felt like an assembly line operation. The contrast was remarkable. Thanks Marty and Clark, and thanks to the RV Odd Couple for pointing us in their direction!

Growing up, I was always told that your insurance is only as good as your agent. I’ve always kept that in mind and only deal with agents who I know are there for me. Case in point. In my working days, I was transferred to Oklahoma City. Had a new home and great insurance agent. While out of state, tornado demolished the home. Before I could even call my agent, he called me. Said he had already been by the home site and would have a check waiting for the full purchase price of the home, etc. It was months before some of my neighbors had any kind of settlement with their insurance. Something else I’ve always done. I’ve kept a ledger documenting every major item. What it is; model number; serial number and photos. Updated copy safely kept in bank and on file with insurance. Much easier with technology today. I had a custom pickup stolen that always carried expensive tools. Insurance company already had list of contents so everything covered. Takes time but worth it. So, can you document what you have in your RV and tow vehicle? (Sorry I got a bit long winded.)

Glad your situation wasn't worse. My wife and I were traveling in an ambulance RV conversion. All I had was a cheap liability insurance when we got in an accident in FL. We hit a car in FL. No damage to our vehicle, but did extensive damage to the car. Our insurance paid and our rates didn't even go up. Yes, we had a good insurance agent. Also had a shipwreck once and completely lost our sailboat. Full insurance on old boats is almost the cost of the boat. However, liability was cheap, which was good as it cost almost $10,000 to remove the wreck. Totally covered. Our home owner insurance covered $7,000 replacement costs of the boats contents.

I have been with State Farm for 45 years and had an accident covered by them. My policy is like a homeowners insurance like one for a sticks and bricks home. They covered the towing cost for my class A. Covered all repair cost even though the accident was not our fault and the other persons insurance was Safe Auto. There policy was a minimal coverage. State Farm was great and covered everything. I would recommend State Farm for everyone. Great video. Thanks

This comment is a bit old given that this video was released over a year and a half ago but I wanted to share my experience just in case it could help someone else. I actually called Marty at Charlotte Insurance. He wasn't able to help me with my particular insurance because I life in Massachusetts and he doesn't yet operate in this state but he picked up the phone for one (which is becoming a rare thing) but he also offered to review whatever quote I obtained to ensure it was correct. So he can't write the insurance but was still willing to help. That level of commitment and decency is very rare. He also specifically mentioned that he wanted to make sure that those who were referred by by the RV Odd Couple were taken care of. and although I got the sense that he was the kind of guy who would have helped anyway, I think it is important to provide feedback to you guys that he is certainly doing that. What a great experience. Thank you both and thank you to Marty.

Thank you for this all important informative video 👍 My husband and I had purchased uninsured insurance because we had moved from Virginia to Florida last year and in Virginia it’s mandatory yet it’s not mandatory in Florida we discovered.... when we removed the uninsured insurance coverage, it saved us hundreds of dollars per year as it basically was double coverage for us. We were told that our collision Insurance coverage would cover everything else besides medical and after calling our medical coverage carrier, they said our medical coverage would cover for auto accidents 🏥 (not all medical coverages cover for auto accidents, so it’s important to check that before removing uninsured motorist insurance which is mainly there for covering medical). Any damage to the vehicle is covered under collision coverage 🚎

Such a great topic and great info. Your point that if your RV is over GWR your insurance won’t cover you, exactly. But also if your tow vehicle is over GWR and or GCWR, you are in the same boat. Also even if your tow vehicle is not over the overall GWR if any thing like over your tire rating, over the weight ratings of front or rear axles etc, insurance can and usually will deny your claim. Got to stay within specs. Just because you can tow it does not mean you should or even legal to do so. I would say 40% of people are over weight somewhere in their 1/2 ton trucks today. They can pull them and even stop them, but over spec somewhere. Beware or be sorry, visit a CAT scale.

John and Mercedes... perfect timing with this video coming out today! I finally took the plunge and just bought my first fifth wheel RV today. It is brand new and the insurance is extremely important to me to make sure it's covered properly. I will pick it up in just two weeks. I'll just be part time RVing for the next year or two. I still plan to go full time eventually. I'll go to my agent (State Farm) who has been my agent for the last 15 years and discuss all this. They carry the insurance on everything I have. Thanks to you I have a better understanding of the things I'll need to make sure are covered. Thank you so much!! I'm planning to manage my brick and mortar retail store via cellular internet from my RV while snowbirding in Arizona in the winters. I'll be doing the book keeping, paying bills, handling the bank accounts, ect. So now I wonder if that would be considered commercial use of the RV? Even though I'll technically just be on a 5 month vacation? Really interesting points you brought up. I'll make sure to check that out with my agent too. I had never thought about the commercial use aspect before. Really glad you brought that up. It's kind of scary how easily you can think you're covered only to find out later you're not.

I don't know if you have ever covered this so I thought I'd mention it. You mentioned weight of your RV! Also be sure that you are properly licensed to pull the weight of a large fifth-wheel trailer. In Nevada and California it is a "J" endorsement on your license which allows you to tow above 10,000 GVW, only a written test is required in these two states and it's pretty easy. Without this endorsement insurance company has another reason to deny claims and you can be cited by law enforcement. Gene Hart, Logandale NV

Thanks, guys! I’m finally full time in a class c. Holy Moly I feel like Farmer Joe’s wife trying to run the farm with no help. Such a huge learning curve all day every day it’s something. On such a big learning curve!!! I actually think it will get easier when I’m on the road more. Hunkered down in the country on my sister’s property fightin’ chiggers, unlevel site, and dogs that take way too long to get their business done at night while I scan the dark woods for coyotes, snakes, scorpions, and god forbid feral hogs!😳 I think I’m ok on my insurance. My Farmer’s agent got me a policy with Foremost and for me most of the things you mentioned...I think. We laughed because he raised my tow coverage amount after he did a little research and found another agent who had to have an RV lifted out by helicopter. 😳 Told him if that happened he’d be dealing with my sons at that point cuz I would have stroked out as the RV flew off the road! BUT I do need to ask him about the pet part and storage. I got the storage after I got the policy! So thanks! Also need to ask about working in my RV??? If public school teachers have to teach from home does that make my home commercial??

Good video content for sure. We do not FT, however our insurance Company was very detailed in our policy including contents for our FW. Uninsured motorist portion was automatic, as it covered through the tow vehicle as well. Same as personal liability was mandatory. Agreed commercial is an option and must be carried if doing any business. Also not every insurance company does commercial. Also need to ensure coverages for natural items such as storms. Our last unit was damaged in a hail storm, was immediately repaired for several items. The right insurance is key and piece of mind. Safe travels!

A friend's travel trailer was destroyed (pics are on RV Tips facebook page) this past weekend by a large limb that broke from a tree on their site. It totaled the trailer. They have State Farm insurance. I do as well. I'm anxious to see how well they're taken care of. They bought theirs used from a private party and got a great deal. I don't know the details of their policy, but I'd be concerned with what State Farm valued the trailer for. When I bought my trailer, State Farm used the MSRP plus the installed accessories as the value. That said, I feel the need to double check all the other things you covered in this video. You guys are a great resource.

LoLo Sunshine It took a while (2 weeks) to get things settled and the destroyed camper hauled away. They got the market value of the trailer, which was about 30% more than they paid for it. Like I said in my original post, they got a great deal, so the settlement was replacement cost for something comparable. The important thing is no one got hurt. The trailer can be replaced, but not loved ones.

I still maintain my home warranty coverage for my home that I purchased 2 years ago. Sometimes they won’t cover a problem, but it largely paid for itself. I just replaced a faucet with labor worth $360 and paid $60 copay. The air conditioning visits were worth it since the ac is over 20 years old and broke down 3 times. They fixed a broken sewer pipe. They didn’t cover a leaky toilet and shower tub drain. Win some, lose some. Old houses have too many problems. Read the fine print. I might not continue the policy next year since I will replace the ac/heater soon.

Wow good thing you didn't have any losses. You need to also check to be sure you have total health coverage outside the USA and it is always recommended to check with your agent before leaving the nation because sometimes the insurance company for what ever reason drops coverage you think you still have. Always check to be sure.

John and Mercedes are giving good advice. I'm a former first responder. In Oklahoma the OHP has specially trained officers called "size and weight enforcement" or SWE. They carry in their vehicles special mobile equipment to weigh and calculate your vehicle and tow vehicle weights. OHP will generally not call an SWE unit for run of the mill accidents involving an RV. You should always run your vehicle over Cat scales and be familiar with your weights and limits. Will repost on the main comments.

@@RVOddCouple Scott is correct..Calif CHP does the same.. Not really looking for the RV er (mainly commercial trucking) but they can still hard time ya.. As far as the accidents go, and your a bit over weight, as long as they determine you were not at fault, they can list you as an associated factor.. They can cite but its rare. Its all up to the officer handling the accident.

I used to be licensed in Property & Casualty Insurance. I could tell people horror stories. I used to work for Travelers. People do not understand Insurance and don’t take the time to understand. I cannot stress enough to find a very good experienced multiline agency. One that represents several carriers. One that understands what you personally need. I really urge people to research Agencies. “Captive Agents” are people that say work for State Farm, Allstate etc..they only sell those companies products. My biggest advice? Put a reminder on your smartphone/calendar once a year to call your agent to review coverages. Everyone’s needs change. You could be under insured or even over insured. Bottom line is that Insurance is the exchange of risk. How much can you afford to self insure vs how much do you want the carrier to take on the risk. Great video John and Mercedes!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

We have full time coverage through Progressive. Something you didn’t mention but I found out in talking with them is that they have group coverages for certain categories. They will only pay out the total group cost for that category. Unless you schedule specific items and you exceed that group category coverage, you will not be covered. One good example is electronics. It was hard to get a straight answer even fro a supervisor about what those group limits were. Very frustrating! Thanks for doing the video.

overweight. haha. I remember meeting some rv'ers who were rock collecting around the country. they were on the east coast and about to return home. they said they even rented some storage facilities around the country to drop off their collected rock and pickup on the way back. when we met them their rv needed to be towed due to engine problems and the tow truck couldn't budge them. so they had to empty weight and the tow truck came back the next day to tow it in. fortunately they were at a campground. every storage spot was filled with rocks. passenger front seat floor area filled with rocks. shower filled with boxes of rocks. When others around realized that their rv was riding low due to their collection, before emptying and after emptying pictures were taken. the difference in how that rv's suspension was quite dramatic. I don't know how they faired in the end because they were staying longer than we were, but they did go out collecting with us and others, and we kept laughing and telling them that the creaks and groans of their rv was it protesting the weight they put in it and that the engine dying was it having a heart attack! when you said overweight, my mind went immediately to that couple. At least they were starting to realize that because it fits doesn't mean that it should and were talking about dropping more off at the storage sights instead of pickup those contents up on the way home!

I'm an insurance adjuster and I can tell you I've never weighed anything. But if it's in your policy it could happen, I have never seen it though. If you ever do have a disagreement with an insurance company on the value of your property you always have the right to an appraisal from a disinterested party or a 3rd party adjuster that you agree on. 10,000 and 20,000 are below the legal limits in most states too.

Lucky for me my wife was an insurance agent for 17 1/2 years and she knew what to look for when we got insurance for our Truck and RV.

You guys are just what I need! I am recently retired and in the process of buying my first travel trailer. Going from tent camping to cushy glamping. I am learning so much from your RU-vids on what not to do. My mother in law has a class c that I used and my parents and grandparents had air streams do I have been around rvs alot but boy have things changed. I'd be honored to be an odd squader and hope to meet up with you someday. Any special advise for an older single lady?

Thanks for this awesome video. I called my insurance company to ask some of these questions. I was shocked when she said I had to notify them two weeks before going to Canada so they can send me a special ID card as proof of insurance. Why? Makes no sense. Why can’t I show them my insurance page with the dates. She implied they ask for this special ID card that they can scan. Who knows this? I also asked about the medical coverage and uninsured motorist coverage and she said we don’t have that because our RV is a fifth wheel and does not have a motor so our truck policy would be picking that up.

Thank you for this video. Really wondered how to go about doing the insurance. I do not have an RV ...yet...working on it, but will check first RV insurance prices before committing to purchasing.
