Our Walmart has signs citing the city ordinance that prohibits overnight parking, passed at the request of the RV parks. We're a snowbird destination near Phoenix, a town of 52,000 with over 2,000 RV spaces. We stopped for the night in a parking lot in Phoenix, cop told us to move to Walmart, gave me directions. I told him we arrived too late to check in at the nearby RV park and it would take a bit since I had taken my truck off the tow dolly, needed to check in the next morning with my new employer. He came back a few minutes later and said he had obtained permission for us to park there for the one night. That's serving the public!

Be careful in places like NJ, NY, Massachusetts , Connecticut, Maryland and of course California. The Deep South and Midwest you’re golden but be careful in places like this. Passing through Philadelphia is another. Even though you might be reciprocal in Pennsylvania the policy of the PD is the issue there.

My Dad was an opponent to wearing seatbelts for many years till a State Trooper told him that an important aspect of seatbelts is that it keeps the driver behind the wheel so that they can control the vehicle better, especially in a skid.

Truth! You can't DRIVE when you're holding on to the wheel trying to stay in the seat for dear life! Use that belt! It's not hindering you at all! Story.. I'm a truck driver. My wife definitely can appreciate Tara's issues. When we picked our 5th wheel up, over 700 miles away, that trip in one day took her down for over a week. Worst part of the whole trip, she got stuck behind the drivers wheel, for almost 5 hours, driving through downtown chicago (missed going through rockford to toll road), at night, in construction, and started to rain. She is such a trooper, and I felt so bad, but we had zero opportunity to get off. I was also thankful for the large fuel tank!

The “C” in CDL stands for Commercial. For most states you need a A or B “non-CDL” license, depending on the weight of your RV; not a CDL , which requires a medical certificate. The test is easier. If in question, consult your home base DMV Commercial licensing center. They will be the most familiar with this issue.

11:08 Driving without a CDL. I'm against forcing people to get a Commercial Driver's License for non-commercial activity. However, I am for voluntarily getting training so that you can drive a large vehicle safely. And I do have a CDL.
@bli3366
@bli3366 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely agree. So much of the bullshit with most modern laws is trying to coerce, or force through deception, people into interacting with the corporate state through commercial means when so much of what is done is a private--and thus, largely non-governed--activity. I am honestly against driver's licenses being mandatory just to be on the public roadways, when the very "licensing" itself technically makes it commercial activity in and of itself. While you should require a license to deliver pizzas, most jobs don't actually require driving, they just require that you be at the workplace at a certain time, and it doesn't matter if you use a bicycle, a horse, or an automobile. How I choose to get to work is my business, what happens on the clock is the employer's. And simply driving a large or heavy vehicle doesn't require permission from the state in order to do, or using a trailer. But yes, please get training if you're going to be moving anything that requires air-brakes, or is extremely heavy or long.

I have always hated generators. As soon as I could I built a battery power station in my van, around 2015. I used 2 LiFePO4 batteries, 2000 watt inverter, DC to DC charger, cigarette ports, USB ports, DC circuit breakers, and several fuses. I have never run my generator since and I am much happier. Life is now much nicer and quieter, and without any maintenance.

Good coverage, thanks for bringing them up so people know what to research. For the flashers in the rain, it's the law in Texas to put on your caution flashers whenever you are unable to maintain minimum speed on the highway (45 MPH), or are a hazard to traffic in some other way (having engine trouble and looking for a place to pull over safely). It does help when we get remnants of the most recent hurricane and drivers of the small, neutral color cars want to drive 20 MPH in the middle lane. (especially since motorcycle helmets usually don't have windshield wipers).

After working in a level one Trauma hospital, I would never, ever drive without using a seatbelt. Ninety five percent of the people who died or had permanent brain damage resulting from a MVA were not wearing seat belts. Work on a person who has been ejected from their vehicle and you’ll NEVER consider not wearing a seatbelt again. It’s awful. Hazardous Materials includes MANY, MANY items ... There are several, on EVERY vehicle that is on the road .... What the Federal Motor Safety Carrier Administration is concerned about, is HOW MUCH... For instance, when I drove a fuel tanker between Grand Junction and Denver CO .. we could not go through Eisenhower tunnel AT ALL. We had to use Loveland Pass. Then, when the pass was CLOSED, we had to wait for one of the 8 hour escorts. They stall traffic 4 am, 12 pm and 8pm and lead hazmat trucks through all at once at 35 mph.. both ways.

@@pouglwaw5932 We had a 19' trailer in VA and had to stop at an inspection station to verify the valve was closed before entering a tunnel. One of my annual R/V related expenses is a publication called "Traveler's Guide To The Firearms Laws Of The 50 States". It spells out everything you need to know state by state about legally traveling with a firearm, and is updated every year to the most current laws. As to weights, you need to know both the empty weight and the loaded weight (including full fresh water tank if equipped) of all your axles, whether you are towing your R/V or driving it. On a towable, you can easily overload the rear axle of your tow vehicle while simultaneously underloading your steering axle, which affects steering traction. Axle weight directly correlates to the amount of air pressure needed in the tires, even on dual tire setups. The more weight that is on a tire, the more air pressure it needs. Tires have maximum air pressure and weight ratings, which are stamped right on the side of each tire. Ideally, you should use four point weighing, where a scale is placed under each tire or set of tires. Without this knowledge, you can easily have more weight on one side of the rig, creating a potentially dangerous imbalance. A common fallacy amongst many R/V owners is that they believe the designers build in the storage spaces in a way that keeps a prospective owner from inadvertently overloading their R/V. That's a belief that will get you into trouble. Incorrect tire pressure is the number one cause of catastrophic blowouts on R/V rigs. If you don't know your weights, you're driving a ticking time bomb. As for R/V'ing in CA, it's on my permanent "No Go" list.

Thank you for this! Very well presented. Besides breaking the law if overweight, we understand that our insurance coverage may be lost if it can be proven that our rig (truck/trailer combination) was overweight at the time an accident occurred. We weight EVERY TIME we go out. A truck scale weight certificate (gotta pay for it) with a date and time stamp can be very helpful.

Another thing about overspeeding tires... that's about maintaining structural integrity in relation to centrifugal force. Exceede the speed for long enough, and it'll literally tear itself apart causing a blowout. This could cause other tires being overloaded if they weren't already. If all you've got is a single axle though...

As a full time RV'er for the past 8 years, I was not aware of most of the laws that you discussed. So thank for the info. In some states there is a requirement that the tow chains must be crossed to prevent the tow bar from dropping if it fails for some reason. It was working well for us, i was hurting no one, and forcing me into the house benefitted no one. Ridiculous. Or lets say you do finish the bottle off but just put it in the rv's trash container and take off down the road. You have a open container violation. That is a big fine and maybe jail. Friend had ODOT (Ohio...) pull over his Kenworth RV (toy hauler) for a safety check (& CDL) - which went to court, and he won (situational-just because it says "Kenworth" does not mean you have to have a CDL to drive it). Rig was clearly labeled "Not for Commercial Use". But as things go, weights/lengths/types of trucks can get dicey. I have known guys in 3/4 or 1 ton trucks to be over-weight- while empty! - much less towing. The real problem with the CDL system is the rules that go with it. An RV add-on permit for over-length/weight vehicles might make sense, but a CDL may then require a camper to carry a log book! Modern pickup trucks can now tow almost 35,000 lbs, but it's illegal without a CDL. Contractors run into this a lot. A lot of room for discussion! Great points-especially when you mentioned about the propane tanks in tunnels!

On the CDL thing you guys talked about, as a resident of Madison county FL. I have a CDL, I started driving big trucks in 1982. Even got my gold star on the license now. I can say this, some of the Northeast states, like CT, will ask if you have a CDL for a rig total length of 50'. MA- 55', NH - 61', Wa-55', CA-47' Know your total length. On the dog thing, I carry a Medical Alert Service Dog, I've never been refused at and state or federal park. Don't try that with a Emotional Support Dog. My paperwork and her license is always checked. The overweight thing, a lot of states are starting to demand larger rigs to cross the Scales and Ports of Entry. If you're overweight, it's usually a big ticket. I do have to agree about the speeding. Too many people don't know the tire rating speed of their rigs. At least once a week I'm seeing or hearing of a rig roll over. The biggest cause, tire malfunction due to speed. If you don't know, go out and look. You want to drive the speed limits, change your tires to a larger grade tire. It doesn't go by the tread, it goes by the outer walls. Look for anything with a grade J or better.

Great information! It's a good thing we did our homework before we began our relocation trip from AK to the hot, dry southwest for my health. We had 2 pets - a dog and an eclectus parrot. The dog needed a vet health certificate but the parrot needed a passport. Yes, just like ours but issued by fish & game, I believe. Our departure was delayed, nearly to the point where we would have to stay put for the winter with family. It took a lot of paperwork and time to get that document, and getting back into the U.S. would have been a huge issue. Parrots are considered exotics and smuggling them is a huge problem. Our baby was hatched in Anchorage, just a few miles from our home, and has never lived anywhere else. She was a great ambassador everywhere we traveled and her passport (and ours) is still valid. It is good for 10 years and has only been used once.😥 My traveling days seem to be over. Our feathered girl will be 20 in September and she will forever be a social charmer.

Someone may have mentioned this but according to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) Part 387.3 propane tanks on RV's are not regulated since they are an integral part of the trailer and two 40 gallon tanks are way under the reportable quantity. That being said turning off the cylinders while traveling is a good habit to practice.

You lost me at double towing (triple towing). Here its called doubles and the first must be a 5th wheel RV. I have towed with this set up for quite a long time and never had any issues with sway like your trying to say. Our state allows 75ft bumper to bumper but also requires and extra set of chains to the far outside of the first trailer. Its a safe set up when done correctly.
@cliffterrell4876

It's not triple towing, it's called pulling doubles. Just like with semis pulling two trailers.

Totall agree.We pull our 5th wheel and golf cart trailer almost anywhere we go. Just because some people cant handle doing it doesnt mean we are all in that catagory and i do not consider it stupid. pretty closed minded of you. But then again a lot of the things you menion range from irrelavant to simply not true.

Pulling triples to me is three trailers. But I drove triples through Nevada, Oregon and Utah for years. RV’s you have to have a fifth wheel with one trailer that would be doubles. You can pull it in any state except Oregon. But you need a Pindle hook. On your second trailer to be illegal. I have never had a problem pulling doubles and I can back them up just fine.

As Professional truck driver, we witness a lot of preventable tragic accidents involving RV across the country because of weight issues, tire blowouts, and excessive towing... PLEASE FOLKS BE SAFE.. KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE.. those particular laws are there for a reason.... Double and triple towing requires trained skills to do them (knowing how to handle high winds etc.)

Right!, I couldn't even back up my kayak trailer! It takes practice & skill if you have never towed anything in your life. I watched video after video until one guy showed to hold the steering wheel at the bottom w/two hands and turn it left or right from that position. Worked for me. I can't imagine towing a huge camp trailer nvm double & triple towing.

nice review! Drones have to be registered with the FAA AND labeled! My rig is just under the weight limit for CDL in Texas. I drive at 63 mph, just UNDER the speed rating. Many people complain about "CHINA BOMBS".MOST tires are made in China. The "bomb" is holding the steering wheel. This has saved me from wrecks several times. I discovered that the RV dealer had sold me a 5th wheel with defective brakes. Good thing I upgraded the brakes on my tow vehicle (years of experience helps, too). I regularly get flown by with huge rigs going over the speed limit. Most places have lowered speed limits for people towing. I have never gone anywhere that moved away because I took too long to get get there! Van Horn, Texas has a law that prevents boondocking on the street, in any parking lot or bare land. Other places have the same rules. There are several RV parks there, however. Solar power does not work after dark but generators do. California just requested that people stop charging electric vehicles because the grid cannot meet the demand. One thing you did not cover. Some counties have laws that dump lines have to be "above grade". This means you have to have a rack to place it on. It has been over 50 years (last from cats in San Bernardino County 1962, dog 1947) since a case of rabies in humans has occurred from a dog or cat in the USA. It still happens in Mexico. Bats, skunks and foxes are the major sources of human rabies. Another reason not to let pets free roam in wilderness settings.

In your coment about "triple towing" you said pulling another trailer behind your 5th wheel was triple towing.Thats considered pulling "doubles" not triples.The tow vehicle itself doesn't count as something being towed.Triple towing is just that pulling 3 trailers. In some states, to pull another trailer behind you 1st trailer, the trailer hooked to the tow vehicle needs to be a 5th wheel,not a bumper tow.

Just bought a hybrid camper, and been binge watching tons of videos. This is a great video! Luckily my town allows RVs (and campers) to be parked on the property. The only issue that they enforce is that all vehicles must have current registration. If it doesn't have current registration, it must be under a garage or carport. (Basically out of sight) California will definitely not be a state I'll visit. Probably won't be hitting up Canada or Mexico too. The USCCA can help with gun laws state to state. They have a map that can be downloaded showing Reciprocity states. Honestly, it won't hurt my feelings at all to avoid states (and Countries) that will not accept my Indiana permit. Didn't realize the rule about no pets in some National parks. That's a bummer. I kind of get that. Some people are not responsible enough to own pets. Another case of ruining it for everyone else. 🙄

My dad had his scamp literally stolen by the city of Miami and auctioned off. It was on my uncle's property. This was 1992 after he retired from the army. One of the reasons why I moved out to a rural area near a city. Now my dad's airstream is at my house. It's not getting stolen by anyone.
