Most people don't know that Magnolia Beach is part of the Indianola Bay, which used to be the Port City of Indianola. It was the largest and busiest Seaport on the Texas Coast until "The Great Storm of Galveston" hit in 1900...a category 4 hurricane that killed almost 12,000 and literally sank the town of Indianola. Out in the Indianola Bay there is still an old steam engine train that used to be able to be seen when tide was low. After the 1900 storm, Galveston became the largest Seaport on the Texas coast. The first 5 to 8 Buccees were simply gas stations that the family bought and they started their snack business with their "Beaver Nuggets" as they grew, they improved their buis model to what most people know them to be today, the HUGE roadside stops that are on every major highway in Texas, but they still have those first few stores like the one in Port Lavaca. Port Lavaca itself is just a sleepy little sea side town that is mostly populated by folks that work the refineries, offshore oil rigs or on fishing boats. The damage from the last few storms and the pandemic have unfortunately taken their toll on it. If you guys head up to Galveston, I highly recommend taking the tour of "The Bishops Castle" its one of the oldest and most unique homes on the island and has been featured in many films. Then I would recommend the "Stump Art" tour. The last big storm to hit Galveston brought a ton of sea water inland that ended up killing a lot of the old growth trees. Instead of just pulling all of them, the town had dozens of artists come in and each one made a different carving out of the stumps. Its a fun little tour and a lot of the buildings have plaques on their walls showing how high the water got in all the main storms that hit their. Love my state and I'm glad to be back. Hope you guys enjoy. Stay safe on the road... And as always... Love, Peace and Bacon Grease Y'all!!!! Mmmmm, bacon!!! ~ Uncle Mongrel

There is a large Bucee's in Texas City on 45 headed south to Galveston. We live in Lake Jackson/ Clute area which is where Bucee's started and most of our stores are small. Try the one in Texas City. If you're headed out of Texas going east on I-10 there is a large Bucee's in Baytown on I-10. Enjoy. Love watching y'all.

I've never been to a Bucees . Beaver nuggets sound interesting ! Port Lavaca looks desolate . I'm sure the pandemic added to it's emptiness. It's like you took us back in time with the old buildings and surroundings sort of like a ghost town . La vaca means the cow in Spanish. A former co worker of mine from the Dominican Republic sang a song La Vaca

Actually, Port Lavaca was much more viable as late as 20 years ago. There was a very large ALCOA plant located there that was a primary employer for the town. However, thanks to NAFTA, ALCOA moved its operation south of the border and the town dried up.

Everywhere you go in the state of Texas, you see dead palms, etc. Yes, they need to be replaced. The problem is finding a well established nursery that has the inventory to replace our dead palms, etc. Hurricane Harvey destroyed quite a bit of the Texas Gulf coast. Wind damage just about wiped out Rockport and flooded the upper Gulf Coast from the Houston area to the Texas/Louisiana state line and beyond.
@LyfUninterrupted
@LyfUninterrupted 3 года назад
Yes it’s very sad and will take a lot of money to replace and revitalize. You’re so right about the need for replacement palms. Where will they come from? Arizona or Florida maybe?
@debbielenoir5472
@debbielenoir5472 3 года назад
There are several large nurseries located in Louisiana but I saw on Facebook where the freeze affected a large portion of their inventory. I haven’t heard about the progress of the building repairs in Texas but I hope it’s faster than after a hurricane has hit.

This was a good video. It was learning about the cities background and seeing the buildings empty because of the storm and all. That’s sad and amazing. Thank you for the tour of this little town. I have never heard of the store you mentioning earlier that you see at a bus stop. Did you ever find another store you like to go to that you says that is always at a truck stop. Sorry I forgot the name of the place. Are you enjoying it where you are at? Was there a place where you could go eat in that town? Or was it pretty empty with nothing there? It’s amazing what those tunes might have and might not have. Can’t wait until next video. Have a great week and see you both in a week. Stay safe.
