Yes, the air brake safety check should be required for everyone who runs air brakes. A workaround for your emergency brake not engaging would have been for you to shut RV off, pump the brakes until all the air was out and your spring brakes should have engaged allowing you to chock camper.

Does anyone else think you should cut your loses on that rig and look for something else? It’s 17 years old and you’ve already so many issues, I can just see it being one problem after another. I’ll bet that couple that sold it to you were ecstatic to see it leave their driveway. On the door locks, can you manually lock each door? Might want to try it but still not sure that will work.

One thing I do not lock my Jeep while towing because if there is some sort of emergency I do not want to fumble with keys or rely on the remote working to enter the vehicle. While there is risk with any activity there is little risk of someone breaking into your truck when driving. Again good job.

@@LizAmazing Hi Liz, I did some internet searching about your truck alarm sounding while flat towing and here's a solution I found. "To lock w/o arming the alarm, you first need to lock the rear & passenger doors by manually pressing down the lock button, then get out & lock the driver's door with the key from inside the fob." Maybe it's the old firefighter in me but, I do not like lock my toad while driving. My reasoning is what if in an emergency (like an RV fire) I want to either disconnect my vehicle or at least grab what I can out of the vehicle. When planning for unforeseen events keep these three things in mind. 1. your technology 2. you won't be able to communicate with anyone 3. no one is coming to help. Doing this will help you mitigate situation. Hope your repair goes well. I've good experiences with Leisure Coach. Look forward to your next video.

I took it to a chassis shop and they gave it a full inspection. Nothing was found and it never did it again after that day. My guess is that I was so flustered at the gas station I might not have waited for it to air up before putting it in drive. Thanks for watching.

Hi Liz! Another great video! Years ago I drove 18 wheelers and it was very stressful at the beginning, getting used to the air brakes, extended stopping distances required vs a car, driving conditions, nite driving, backing up, etc., etc., etc. Then I learned how dangerous it was driving with an "empty" trailer on a wet road ... the trl brakes locked and I jack knifed! That was "IT" for me ... and at 25, I felt like I had already lived a lifetime! Well, my dad, who got me into the Teamsters and told me what a great job it was, had a talk with me ... explaining that what I had experienced isn't unusual and it's those lessons learned that make you a professional ... then he shook my hand and congratulated me for "graduating" into the ranks of the Pros! After that, I calmed down and almost magically all the anxieties and tensions of driving disappeared, my confidence was restored, and I actually enjoyed the job after that! Since that "pivotal" talk ... many years ago ... driving is a pleasure and "emergencies" are taken in stride ... bcs I always think that a few hours from now I will have the problem solved and be comfortably relaxing again! It's all about gathering experience and building confidence ... and you are well on your way now, Liz!

Liz, my Ford F-350 will not lock with the key in the truck, and using the fob, or inside door lock switch. The trick is to push down the lock with your finger, located at the top of the door, by the window. Then close the door. To get back into my truck, I use the outside key code pad. I have to do this when I leave the truck running, in the winter, at a shopping parking lot.

The repair place you went to Liz in Fontana.....was that J&L RV Repair in Fontana? If so they are EXCELLENT! You went to the right place. That is where we bring our Rig. They are family owned and very honest. Sometimes slow but do a great job. We totally trust their work. We live in Menifee CA and will drive out there to Fontana to get work done at J& L because they are excellent, trustworthy and are good people. However, IF you happened to go to Redlands Truck and RV we do NOT recommend them. We went there for a brake issue and we did not like their work and do not trust them. Will never go back there again. Our Rig was only a couple years old and still looked brand new however when we picked it up there were a couple things messed up on our rig. The lights inside our awing had been cut and one of our hub caps had been replaced with an OLD scratched up hubcap! Ours were new and shinny with the freightliner decal looking perfect on it. The one they put onto our Rig had NO decal on it. Someone there took ours and put it on their rig. And what happened to our LED lights on our awning while in their repair shop? Who knows but we never will ever go back there again! Hope you didnt go there.

My husband does a lot of the maintenance on our Rig himself. Our rear air bags (aka air springs) went out ( on our 2016 Diesel (should NOT have happened to a coach this new) and he got new ones from Velocity (a freightliner approved repair and parts place also in Fontana) and replaced them himself. It really helps having a husband who is mechanically inclined. LOL!

Mistake #1, you left the fuel stop ( I’m assuming there was a repair facility or mobile repair close) with malfunctioning parking brakes! Do yourself a favor, have both of your maxi brake canisters replaced, do what’s called a complete canister not what’s called a piggyback, with a coach of that age it’s a matter of time until a spring in the canister brakes and you have a problem with that. You should be able to get quality brake canisters at a reputable repair shop, cheap is cheap, MGM is a good brand. Fyi, I spent 25 years as an owner operator in the trucking industry with a tad over 3 million miles, I just replaced the maxi brake canisters on my 05 Monaco, about 300 bucks for two complete canisters. I’m guessing if your still close to the people that fixed your parking brakes, they can do the repair! Sorry I didn’t have any travel experiences to share, in the coach anyway! All kinds in the truck!
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Год назад
Ooh, I will have to look into that Jeff. I did the air brake safety check and it passed with flying colors. I think what happened was I was so flustered at the truck stop that I didn't wait for the brakes to air up before pulling forward. I will definitely check out maxi brake canisters, thank you!
@NoGasWelcomeAboard
@NoGasWelcomeAboard Год назад
For air brakes, it takes air pressure to disengage the parking brakes (otherwise known as spring brakes). Pulling that parking brake knob does not directly apply the parking brakes like a car. It actually stops the air from reaching the brakes and dumps that pressure. That’s why you hear a swoosh when you pull that knob up. For safety, parking/spring brakes are designed to engage automatically when air pressure gets too low. So in that rest stop had your parking brake knob switch not worked, you could’ve stopped your engine & pumped your brakes to drop the air pressure. As the air pressure dropped below a certain level, the parking brakes would’ve engaged. That level is one of the items you check during an air brake check. A horn will sound and the parking/spring brakes engage at that low air level. You could then have gotten out of the seat and chocked the wheels as a backup… Sorry just saw someone else mentioned this a day ago. But my post explains why. Phoenix is cold & raining too.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Год назад
Thanks, that first part is very good to know. And yes, doing that air brake safety test that I mentioned did the trick, and was a relief to see it pass the test. Thanks for watching.

I have a 2020 F150 4x4 and while I’m inside with the doors closed I lock the vehicle with the lock switch on the door which locks everything. Then I exit by just opening the door normally then close the door and then lock it with the key itself (not the fob). The doors are all locked and the alarm is off. You need to use the key to unlock the door. I had a “dummy” key cut (no chip) for use in the ignition while traveling. The vehicle cannot be started with this key so the vehicle can’t be stolen by someone just breaking a window to get in. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Super glad they answered the phone on the first ring. (3) Thanks! I don't expect to do many driving videos with my motorhome. Definitely want to stay safe. Thanks for watching!

So you can’t just put it in park like a car? What would have happened if you weren’t able to get it to work? Sorry if this is a silly question. Hope it’s an easy fix.

Liz - regarding locking the doors on your F150 that you tow without having the doors unlock or the alarm going off when you hit a bump, try locking the doors manually without using the power door lock nor the key fob: • Lock the door from the inside by pushing the door lock button manually and then shut the door from the outside. • Lock the door manually from the outside using the mechanical key in the door lock. Hope this solves the problem as you can lock the doors mechanically without activating the electronics which arms the security system!

What a journey, I in March drove my 32' rexhall with my car on the tow dolley from Stillwater to Hammond Louisiana, I was coming home. Let me tell you, yah for all the drivers out their that have had to deal with hills. I really had only one way to go. The back roads, I had to make the trip solo with 2 dogs. I had only driven the rig about 30 miles before and never towed, what an experience that I never want to do again. I didnt have any issues and planned the route and gas stops that worked best. Sleeping in parking lots and behind gas stations didnt bother me at all. I have big issues with bridges over water even in cars, so it was very intimidating and I had to focus so hard to get over the mississippi river bridge. I guess what helped is my driving a school bus way back in the 80's. I set my mind to do it and had no other choice, I had to drive her home. You and all the other women drivers are so brave to tackle such a beast. Good luck.

I don't remember if your truck has the door buttons or not. If it does, press the right two buttons together to lock the doors with the key in. This requires either a second key or knowing your code to unlock the door. If you have 2 keys and not push button start, you can get your code by turning the ignition on for a few seconds with one key and then turn it on with the second key. It will display the code while the second key is on.
@LizAmazing

Any good advice on learning to tow my Honda? I can't think of any place where I could go for lessons. We're currently in upstate SC. Any Advice is greatly appreciated.

You don’t need to tow with you pickup doors locked, nobody is going to steal it while your towing, just tow unlocked and when you stop at rest areas ect you can lock it it then when your ready to tow again then you can unlock it. I never tow my Toad locked going down the road. As far as the horn going off it’s because the truck sets it alarm when locked so anything can set it off. Just tow with your pickup unlocked

The weight of the kitchen in the rear looks good inside but is a disaster in weight distribution. Bad design unless you beef up the frame and supports but still will probably fail over time.

Re the parking brake issue: I had a similar issue in my truck and it turned out that an air brake sensor had gone bad, and gave a faulty signal that said the air brakes were set. It didn’t effect the actual air brakes, but I had to endure nearly three full days of driving with the alarm blaring before I could get it fixed!

Thanks for sharing and asking a lot of questions and getting to the bottom of what needs to be done. We have the freedom of choice and we must protect it. I would’ve of put a fitting on the bottom RV tank with a hose and have a valve at the end of the hose. Then fill up a container and lift the container to fill the receiving tank on the truck. It would’ve made it a lot easier to do and you would have less spillage. Also will not wear off the threads of the plug on the bottom of the tank. Have fun on your travels.

Liz, could you discuss why you chose a Ford F-150? I'm making my plans to go full time and trying to figure out what I want to tow. I know the basics. Looking for opinions on the type, size, etc of the tow. I like the idea of the F-150. Imagining where it would be useful. However, I can see it also be an issue due to the size when trying to drive around and explore (especially when trying to park!) What are your thoughts? Would you now have preferred something smaller or lighter? With your back issues how is climbing in and out of the F-150? Also discuss your tow hookup. Thanks!
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing Год назад
Thanks Dale! I did talk about this in my tour video of the motorhome. The short answer is I like to go hiking in National Parks and many of the good hikes are down long dirt or gravel roads. I love knowing I can go anywhere in that truck. Also since it is my daily driver it is much kinder to my back than a small car. Thanks for remembering that I had back surgery and being there through that! This is a 2018 F150 which was the first year Ford went to an aluminum body so it is lighter weight, too. 6500 pounds. Here's the video about the tow hookup, and thanks for watching: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4O5P1wiO5qw.html
