FOX 25 Boston News - www.myfoxboston... - Some owners of expensive recreational vehicles are defrauding Massachusetts out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by registering their RVs in Montana and avoiding state and local taxes, a FOX Undercover investigation has found.
Investigators with state Inspector General Gregory Sullivan's office have already identified 23 RVs owned by Montana companies and registered in Montana when in fact, Sullivan says, the vehicles should have been registered and taxed here.
"This is a tax fraud rip-off scheme. The victims are the other taxpayers in Massachusetts," Sullivan says.

Nobody is defrauding anyone. The company owns the RV, and where you as a US citizen choose to set up your LLC is your own business. Think about it- large corporations register high ticket items like yachts, jets and the like in tax free or low tax states or countries and have NO problems doing so- but be a 'little guy' and use a legal means to accomplish the same thing and you are accused of fraud.

It’s legal. Risky but not illegal. Insurance will deny claims on these if you need it. Mainly because there is no property interest because it belongs to a llc

It's not legal if Ma has a law that requires in-state registration on vehicles stored in Ma over 30 days. Purposely putting your fingers in your ears doesn't mean you're deaf just because you refuse to hear. If Ma confiscates it you think a judge would find it legal?

@@Astinsan Actaully,the insurance policy would have to be bought and paid for by the llc with authorized drivers. It would be the same as any other business. The LLC has insurable interest in the vehicle based the LLC being the titled owner. It seems the involved aren't completly being honest with insurance companies and lawyers.

There's an even easier way to do it. Set up a post office box and use that. Also, get a Montana driver's license. Then tell the state of Massachusetts to screw off.

That probably won't work, in most if not all states you need a driver's license from the state where you live.

It sucks that people have to go to this length to save money on their rv's. I am considering an RV purchase in the near future and all the research I have done shows that the companies and taxes that are implied on RV's and Travel Trailers are outrageous. 40% on average on top of MSRP and other taxes will cost you a fortune. It is unfortunate that Mass. owners need to do this, but with this economy, can you blame them? Just my thoughts.

Trucking companies have done this for years, I think it was Maine we always had all the company owned trailers licensed thru. We leased the trucks thru a company in Utah so they had Utah tags. The ultra wealthy have done this for years AND ITS LEAGLE. So Chanel 25 you can go to hell, you're picking on a couple rv owners, if you want to go after someone because you don't like this, go after the politicians that passed these laws making it legal.

What? Driven in Massachsetts for over 30 days must be registered there? I have lived in Florida for 25 years. I still live in Florida. Everything I have - drivers license, car license, RV license - is from Florida. But I may want to spend a month or two in the summer in Massachusetts. Do these people actually expect me to register there?

If you live in an RV doesn't that make it a home and therefore exempt from MA sales tax? Or, maybe they should charge sales & excise tax on houses too. That would help beef up the gubmint coffers.

why are they not required to possess Commercial Driver License CDL-B to drive these large vehicles With hydraulic brakes they escape the license requirement but the weight class should require air brakes to stop safely.

Hilarious. It's perfectly legal, the law about 30 days in the state and it has to be registered there sounds like they pulled it out of their ass. There should be no problem if they have a Montana address. This is 100% legal and I do the same with my vehicles to get around the outrageous yearly registration fees. The cost of renewing registration every year would cost more than what I paid for my pickup in just 6 years of paying for them. How is that fair?

Large corporations set up headq" uarters in foreign countries all the time and register "fleet" vehicles in the cheapest ways possible and I'll bet some of those operate in Massachusetts as well and cuz they have big lawyers on retainer they don't get messed with but they also have big bribes!;)

Quit ripping people off, especially the elderly who have paid enough taxes in their lives. Why don't you look into where the taxes are being spent. We supposed to be the United States so what is it to you where people register their vehicles. If it was all even across the country and States like your were not over charging this would not happen. Ask why it cost so much to register there!!!

No shit, fuckin state. I live in massachusetts they tax your ass on everything. Good for these guys. Other thing is there is a loophole so you can get maine plates for trailers and avoid the states bullshit on that. I bought a project car from the 60s a few years back for 700, state charged me salestax on 8500!!! Said thats what its worth!!
