One thing we were concerned about before we started living in our RV and traveling full time was finding locations to camp. We just plan ahead, and this is how we do that!
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Click Show More ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
UPDATE (November 2019): We still LOVE our Rand McNally GPS, but TechnoRV has switched to Garmin. See this article (changinglanesr...) for more details.
UPDATE (August 2020): We decided to try out the Garmin so we could see if it's something we can recommend. We've used it for a couple of travel days now and really like it! Nothing really different in the actual routing, but the user interface is a bit more intuitive to use. So far, we really like it! changinglanesr...
We'd heard lots of warnings about never getting into national parks, state parks, etc. Well, we were in over 45 locations last year all over the East coast of the U.S. and about 15 so far this year out west. We've never had an issue finding a site, and we've stayed in Campgrounds, RV Parks, State Parks, USACE (US Army Core of Engineers) Sites, etc. Yes, National parks are much more size restricted, but there are plenty of big rig friendly parks outside the national parks! We just plan ahead, and this is how we do that!

########### UPDATE ####################
As this video was in editing, we got the following update from RV Trip Wizard:
We have two significant product releases/tie-ins coming out. Within a few weeks we’ll be releasing an update to Trip Wizard that includes true RV-safe routing, taking into consideration not just height, but length, width, propane (or not), tunnels, bridges, etc. It will also allow custom settings on a per trip basis, so if you want to plan a trip without the RV, or with a different RV you can, without messing up your global settings. The other big release is our RV Life App 2.0. It’s actually out now for IOS, but it’s been a soft release. RV Trip Wizard customers will be able to get this app for $10 and will allow them to access the trips they have created in RVTW, as well as turn-by-turn GPS, access to all of the campground data, articles, and even offline maps for any or all states they wish for full access when no internet signal is available.
We had a chance to play around a bit with the RV Life App, and it looks very promising!

I bought my TST TPMS from TechnoRV and it works great. I’ve got the cap monitors on my truck and trailer so when I’m not towing the trailer I know how my truck tires are doing. As soon as it’s in range of my trailer it picks those tires right up. TechnoRV’s instructional videos are amazing. This 59 year old single gal programmed and installed it myself!!

OMG! We learned a valuable lesson on using trip wizard. We tried to plan our trip and we thought it would be easy to plan EVERY stop. We learned that we need to plan on what we want to see and where we want to spend the night not every rest stop of filling up with gas. Of course we stop every 2 hours. Our trip is going to be about 3,500 miles totally.

Tom Tom has a truckers/RV GPS. It has many of the features you mentioned. Tom Tom comes with LIFETIME maps plus crowd sourced corrections. If enough users report errors the maps are updated. I get updates at least once a month. You can have multiple vehicles entered and easily switch between them. I have the rig (same size as yours) plus just the tow vehicle entered. Escapees Club has a planning map as well. If you go to Joshua Tree there are VERY few spots for a giant. I found Joshua Tree Lakes RV Campground. ALL the spots for RVs are pull through. They have water and power but no septic. You can use the dump station as you leave. They have a lake (in the desert) and an astronomy site to see the stars. The prices are much less than the 'premium' resorts since it is also near Palm Springs. In addition, many of the Moose, Elks and other such organizations have RV sites!

Rand McNally has come a long way in the past few years. The trucking company I drive for has the older TND760 commercial use navigation, messaging, and logging units. I’m liking the updated graphics of yours. The older McNallys looked like an elementary school class drew and colored the maps. Looking into retiring with a class A or larger C (30-35ft) in about 4-6 years. I’m loving the information you and a few others are putting out there to help getting my ducks in a row. Safe travels to you always. 👍🏼🗺

Tip from a former over planner. Plan less, see more, relax more. A great example of this can be seen on some other channels that also have very large rigs that never make reservations. Less planning means less stress to keep a schedule and gives you the freedom to change plans on a moments notice if you see a sign for something interesting along the way. It really comes down to how much time you have and if you are vacationing or full-timing and moving with the temperature/seasons and enjoying life as you go. Best thing I have found is to look at CGs websites in the area and then using the satellite and street view to get a good idea of if you can fit. Reviews are somewhat helpful but consider people are more likely to leave bad reviews than they are good ones in general.

Awesome info! I understand it takes longer to explain than to actually do, especially for seasoned RV’ers like you two! Thanks so much for your willingness to share info! #safetravels

Just got back from a weekend trip to Grand Lake Colorado. We stayed at the Winding River Resort in our 44’ Fuzion 5th wheel Toyhauler. I would recommend this rv park for your big rig. Paved all the way to the park entrance. Park offers numerous activities including ATV rentals on site, horse back riding on site, hay rides, and pancake breakfast. Loads of fun especially the ATVing right outside the park.

As always, AWESOME video. Being a previous truck driver. the GPS that I have is the Rand McNally model TNDT80. The curve warning feature is awesome. It is about the same as your new one except for the rv camping feature built in the system. Someday I will have my RV rig. Thanks for all the technical know how. You all be safe, safe travels and live long and prosper.

I bought a Rand McNally OD7RV just received it. Found out if you buy from Amazon there is only a 3 month warranty. Also unit does not accept Canadian postal codes had to put dummy number in. Probably means maps for Canada are poor as well. Love your channel well done just bought our first motorhome (Winnibago 40KD) so lots to learn.

Give it a shot and return it within 30 days if it doesn't work for you.. We've been testing the Garmin 890 and will have a video out soon. Some things are better and some not. But, it might be an option if you need to return the Rand.. 👍🏼

Your demo is pretty much the trip we just did. Gros Ventre is a great campground for Grand Teton. I think they can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet, and they have 30-something sites with electric. One good thing there was that I finally had good AT&T connection. Jackson is nearby, and so is GTNP. Nearby is the booming metropolis of Kelly, which has the Kelly Gros Ventre Deli, where you can get awesome sandwiches. And just down the road (up the road?) is the Shane cabin, used in the movie Shane, which provides great framing for pictures of the Tetons. Take a rafting trip on the Snake with Black Dog rafting company in Jackson. Those guys are great. Two things about Gros Ventre is they don't take reservations, and I'm not sure if the 45-length includes the tow. But if you arrive in the shoulder season (May or Sep), you shouldn't have a problem getting a site. If you want to get the iconic Teton photos, start at Oxbow Bend at sunrise (so you get the reflection of the Tetons in the river), then move south, stopping at the Snake River Overlook, then move on to Schwabachers Landing, and then the Moulton Barns (which aren't far from the Shane Cabin). The light at the Moulton Barns is good until about ten a.m. There are many, many more photo spots, but those are some of the classics. For Yellowstone you're going to be doing a TON of driving, because it's such a big freaking park (bigger than Delaware and RI combined.). It gets crowded once school is out, especially at the usual suspects (Grand Prismatic Springs, Lower Falls of the Yellowstone, & Old Faithful, to name a few.). The road system only lets you see 3% of the park and that's about all that 95% of the tourists ever see. So plan on some hikes. Learn how to use bear spray and never hike without it. That goes for all three parks. Best wildlife viewing is Lamar Valley, sunrise and sunset. Hayden Valley is good, too. Ask the rangers if there are any bison or elk carcasses, because that might allow you to see the two of the Holy Trinity of Wildlife (griz and wolf. The 3rd is the moose. You have a better chance of seeing them in Grand Teton.). When you head north to Glacier, if you're in no rush, take state road 83 north of Butte, which will take you past tons of lakes and state parks, such as Salmon Lake, Seely Lake, Swan Lake and so on. You could spend an entire summer just on those lakes. Make sure you get your grocery shopping done before you get to Glacier, because there really isn't anything near the park, other than those little general stores that sell a limited number of things for five times the normal price. You won't be able to take your rig on the Going to the Sun Road, which you probably know, but your truck is fine. If you want to get a parking spot at the Avalanche Lake trailhead or at the Logan Pass Visitor's Center, you have to get an early start. I mean really early. Hikers park at Logan Pass, and then head out on all day hikes. That's why there's usually no parking for people just traveling the road and wanting to stop at the Visitor's Center. The good thing is that the park does run a free shuttle along the GTTS, so that's always an option. I'd say spend half your time on the west side of the park and then drag your rig over to the east, so you can see Lake Saint Mary and Wild Goose Island, plus Many Glacier. It all depends upon your time available. I would recommend that one day while on the east side you drive up into Alberta to visit Waterton Lakes National Park (which borders Glacier). It's very close. Have afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel, one of the iconic hotels in North America, built by the Great Northern Railway in 1927. Oh, and AT&T cell service is great in Waterton, as opposed to non-existent in Glacier. My wife considers staying at the POW camping. Anyway, didn't mean to make this so long, but I've been going to those parks since 1969, and I'm sort of addicted to them.

Holy cow! That's a lot of great info! We went through Glacier a few months ago and yellowstone and Teton after that. My girls flew in for Teton and Yellowstone. We really enjoyed it all! We did about half of the things you mention here, but I've bookmarked this for when we get back that way! Glacier was our favorite place all summer! Absolutely spectacular! We rode Lucile across the pass twice. Didn't make it over to Many Glacier but will next time! Thanks a bunch! Great advice! 😊

Thank you for showing RV Trip wizard as a subscriber - the options and views give a lot better explanation of that it will do and show versus the "free trial" version. We are starting to plan a southern trip next year, and this gives me a lot better concept of what the program will do and how it does it.
