Soon you won't have to climb the treacherous mountain path to get to the video. You will only have to walk on this new, flat path. (Assuming you wait for a few thousand years for the lava beneath it to cool down!)

@@asbisi NO! it's a mother! she oozes her benevolence and threatens no one, no explosive outbursts that throw 10's of 1,000s of hot rocks into the air or overwhelming amounts of toxic gasses or ash that could kill any who are in it's path. This volcano deserves to be called, as the Icelandic ppl. do a 'tourist volcano' You can get w/in ft. of it's lava field and NOT be in danger, as long as you know that a lump of a few tons could just roll off the edge because the lava is constantly pushing the edges outwards. This volcano is simply raising the levels of the lower valleys, it as yet barely is a threat to any settlements altho if it does go on for another 2-300 yrs then that will definately change, but NOTHING is happening so fast that they cannot deal with it. It's just NOT that kind of volcano, that's what is so brilliant about it, we can get up 'close and personal' with mother Earth and she don't bite! She's just creating land.

@@nolasmith7687Yes we s . . . hang on I mean they should've put a cement message in the ground before the eruptions got too advanced, saying s/thing like "Olaf was e're!" 🤭 Then in 100's of yrs or so archaeologists could find it and wonder! 🤔 It is a bit sad tho' they used to call it 'The beautiful Valley' in Icelandic of cause! But what to call it now? This is the 1st. volcano I've managed to watch it's progression from day 1 ! from a small fissure that grew and spawned 2 more just nearby just like a mum and her to kids but the 2 kids outgrew her. . . . . and then about 1k away another fissure opened that was actually about 5 or 6 fissures, that 1 pored out so much magma and yet it also died down when the last one . . (so far!) was born which is what we see now, I've read some say that the outpourings are not so great in volume put this seems pretty prolific to me. 😲

I'm learning these names (hard to understand them when spoken). Valur and Art. I find Art's videography to be stunningly good. It's the main reason I tune in. Valur's English is also superb, not to mention his great sense of humor, such as "the volcano is a slaughterhouse for drones."

I was there yesterday (ran into Valur while I was on my way down actually!), and getting the hot dog at the end of the hike truly felt like the ultimate gift from God.
Cool you got to meet Valur. Also, Icelandic hot dogs are no joke. They're so good that I can hardly enjoy american hot dogs anymore... unless i really doctor them up to taste closer to the ones I had in downtown Reykjavík.
Valur, you are wearing my favorite sweater! I love the design and the two natural colors. We are coming to visit for a week in October and it would be great if the volcano was still active! I hadn't seen any video showing the upwelling lava like that, now I completely understand why the path to spectator hill has been closed off. It looks as though the saddle could be covered in a couple of minutes if the lava welled up close to the edge.
Term for what's threatening the saddle necessary to reach the old observation mountain? Perched pond. Lava pools in areas surrounded by levees. Then either it overflows those levees or they breach and suddenly a voluminous, fast flow heads away from the perched pond. It's particularly dangerous if the levees breach as that releases a lot more of the lava volume in the perched pond. So the precaution of closing the old observation mountain is very necessary. The term for what the old observation mountain will likely become is kipuka. Kipuka is a Hawaiian language term for an uncovered area completely surrounded by lava.
Thanks for the info, very helpful. Do you know where is lava that is filling the search pond is coming from? There is no lava feeding from the big lava vent. Is it coming from one of the original lava vents which is now covered by the lava from the crater that is still erupting?
@@thisisme8666 I would certainly defer to Mr. Newton on this, but it's my understanding that while most of this new lava field looks cold and passive, it is only a shallow layer of cooled lava. Underneath is a giant white hot lava pool, 100 meters deep. It is everywhere, fed by "Bob's" endless eruptions. It is evident in the beautiful footage that closes the video, starting at 13:52.
@@demef758 yeah. I'm deeply concerned this is a bigger problem than what people my imagine. At least their is relieve in knowing that some of the pressure underneath is escaping.
@@thisisme8666 "There is no lava feeding from the big lava vent." Oh yes there is. The vast majority of that lava field is still liquid. It will take a very, very long time for it to cool. For example consider the lava erupted as part of Kilauea Iki in 1959: material was still liquid from that decades afterwards. Drilling was done in the 1980s if I recall correctly and liquid material from that eruption was found as they drilled down. This eruption's material is not as deep as that got yet, but it's not too far off in some places. It will take until past 2050 for parts of this eruption's material to cool off even if it stops now.
My poor phrasing. What I meant to say was there is no visible lava flowing from the current visible active cone/vent, as the majority of that lava seems to be following the main lava stream. However, the pond is still growing, with new molten lava visibly seeping through to the surface. Just wondering where that lava is coming from.
I remember Mt St Halen eruption vividly. It was so monumental and so well covered that I still remember or half flash back memories when I see old coverage. This volcano is very different… but it is beautiful and so well covered. I knew almost nothing about Iceland. Now I know a lot thanks to this eruption.

I just watched a documentary on Hawaii volcano. They are selling theirs as worlds most accessible lava field. It seems Hawaii can hold Iceland’s beer for a while ? Thanks again for real time news 🙏🇨🇦
I've noticed the calming effect of the volcano through the videos, too. I think the sound is also calming. Wow - the footage at the end with the sunset glow in the sky is just as breathtaking as the night shots!
I will say this to the camera man, good job. No excessive zooming or excessive panning. Great stable shots. I can't tell you how much that aggravates me trying to watch videos of the eruption from some of the amateurs posting videos.

I so appreciate that you provide such extensive footage of the volcano without music. Much more real and special to just hear the natural sounds of the area, while looking at the footage, rather than annoying music over the footage.

I've wondered if it will ever calm down since reading that the flow is coming directly from the Earth's magma source, not from chambers. I'm also curious about what the effect of displacement is - if matter from inside the planet ends up on top what happens, if anything?
@@misc.endeavours8343 I suspect that the magma in the centre of the planet is constantly being renewed by the subduction process, it has to come out some where.
@@philadams964 Thank you for explaining that - I was beginning to imagine the Earth becoming drained and hollow with a very thickened outer layer in random areas and whatever peculiarities that might lead to!
@@philadams964 I'm guessing that it would be fed by the crust being recycled along the Pacific rim for example. It's a continuous process, which has been active for billions of years. :)
What you see at the end and which amazed you is called crustal resurfacing. That can occur in lava lake with fluid lava but also in the context of lava pond on a lava field.
I suspect there are people there filming for the movie industry to get footage for future use if they ever need it. I mean come on! Where will they ever find something like this that looks so unreal?

😭 So gutted that the best viewing area is gone. If I make it thru all the hoops to get there in a few weeks I hope its still a good view. So jealous of people who got to see it in early stages!

Great shots as usual: good close-ups of the pillow lava. Also like the sweater: I had one similar purchased in 2008, which was particularly warm. But recently was dismayed to find it had been shredded by textile moths. Icelandic wool must be tastier than most.
This is my favorite source for accurate and timely information about the volcano. The reporting and photography/videography are outstanding. I live in an area surrounded by >currently< semi-dormant volcanos and calderas. Mt. St. Helens was only a three hour drive away. Yellowstone is eight hours away by car.

Thanks again Valur and Art, Great video. The lava waterfall is stupendous - a huge volume in cubic metres/second. I presume it flows in tunnels under the lava sheet and is popping up in those pools at the edges.
I really look forward to these updates. Your guest has an interesting observation today. Watching the volcano do its thing forces you to slow down and adapt to its time. Just a tiny hint of geologic time.
Thanks for the report. About the increase of the activity at night. I noticed similar activity changes at other vulcanoes like Fuego or Etna. There must be some research on that. Now I'm really curious! I have to look it up! If I find something, I'm going to inform you all. XD
I have a feeling of calmness when watching footage from the volcano too in a way we are listening to the earths heartbeat and maybe our own hearts are beating in sync with the earths and it is centering our own inner core a bit hippy trippy I know but it's worth thinking about 🌋🌏
It's incredible to see lava moving like this so far away from the crater. With the eruptions continuing, the crater will only get larger, as will the mound that's building up where the lava flows out from the crater. I'm sure this will slow the flow down slightly but it's still coming from a huge source. Thanks again, Kris.🇦🇺🥰

Couple of observations: what was once a spatter cone that was prone to sudden collapse of its walls, has now become a truly formidable volcano. It’s been fascinating to watch its transformation. Secondly, once the lava crosses the path it will run rapidly into Meradalir and overtop the barrier. Which will of course mean that the volume of lava flowing towards the sea will increase significantly. Judging from this footage and the massive upwellling of lava in Geldingalir, I’m guessing that could happen as soon as tomorrow. Not in weeks but in hours!
"Splatter cone." I'm learning new phrases. I've notice how these cones are built up as well, and it strikes me that it is akin to making a mound out of loose gravel. The cone's structure has to be very weak, subject to collapse if jostled just the right way by the volcano. Imagine what will happen if one of these walls collapses now, with lava being pushed almost to the top of the opening of the cone. Yikes!
Holy crap. that volcano is nuts! I remember when the first crater opened back in March and there was a clip of the side wall collapsing and little lava river flowing out, I was like Wow, COOL! But look at what it has become!
This reminds me of the first time I experienced seeing lava in Hawaii. The shapes and texture of the solidifying lava was just like this and we were able to walk right up to the molten lava which resembled molasses as it flowed.
damn those smood lava pools, remember me of last summer when I rode my bicycle over the F910 west of Askia there is a lava field very old but like 60km wide with a road going over it, just think when this field is hard and old take you 4x4 over it :D I went just as fast on my bicycle as the 4x4 jeeps/campers greetings from the Netherlands :D
We were just in Reykjavik this week and after 'ein með öllu' from the Bæjarins Bestu pylsur stand, we popped up to the Grapevine office nearby and MET POLLÝ!!!! She's adorable, it was a real highlight of the trip 😍🐶
It is Winter months where i live and this lava always makes me feel warm just watching. They should rename the whole area lava lake or lava sea, it just keeps on giving. Praise God for his creation.

American interview probably . The entitled, confident , i got money accent gets to lots of people . (not saying she is ) But after meeting a few unrepresentative travellers one can get jaded . Israelis seem to get bad ticks too ,again they can come over as very arrogant and entitled . (not saying they are )
I see this in other channel vids as well. Even innocuous stuff. My guess it's people doing it to mark that they are not interested in the video rather than actually disliking it. The "not interested" is hidden in a menu in most RU-vid apps.
