I've frequently said the same thing, ANC is repeating NAT mistakes, only (some) victims and perpetrators have changed. However, I would really like to hear Johnson's take on why, then, the ANC was so successful in it's first 15 years. The statistics of that period are there for all to see, and the fact that the wheels coming off co-incided more or less with Zuma's preside Cy (and beyond).

Look at the IDC stats 1994-2013, it's a broad set of stats over the entire period. They dovetail with world bank, etc. stats. Electrification & housing also grew heavily. I don't buy the "economic momentum" argument, the NATs could then have shown similar development pre-1994.

As there were sanctions, the Nats' abilities to support development were badly limited. Prior to sanctions it was different. Between 1962 and 1972 the UN paid $298M to underdeveloped countries compared to SA that spent $558M on the development of its Bantu areas. The budget amount for Bantu education increased every year from 1970 to almost 30% more than any other Government Department. From 1955 to 1984 the number of Bantu scholars increased from 35,000 to 1,096,000. In 1988 71% of the adult Bantu population could read and write versus 47% in Kenya, 38% in Egypt and 34% in Nigeria. On average during the year 15 new classrooms per working day were built for Bantu scholars. I'm reading the comment section and I'm like, why can't people understand the context in which these laws and policies were created on. Some of us are blinding ourselves from the past and how it was brutal to the African child. I think it's dangerous to try to equate these two things, ANC and the National Party.

It beyond comical that there are some who think the hundreds of legislated laws evaporated in 1994, and their permanent impact will just change itself without any legislated corrective measures implemented.
