RWBY Clone Semblance Explained: Shadow & Via Sun 

Gotta love how Blake and Sun's semblances mirror each other so well.

msk One thing I noticed is that Sun seems to have more ease summoning clones when there is a light source, more specifically the Sun, which makes his semblance name fitting: Via Sun. I wouldn't surprised if Sun stores up light during the day and uses that in combination with his aura to create his clones. I also have an idea about why there is a difference between Blake and Sun's similar but different semblance. Blake alludes to Beauty & the Beast, and while Adam is originally the beast, Blake can easily fit into the beast position when it comes to certain relationship (team RWBY, Yang, Sun, Humans etc). In the most popular interpretation of B&B trope, the Beast is lacking something fundamentally inside, whether it be courage or kindness, and needs Beauty to learn and fill the emptiness within. I think that is why Blake's semblance is an empty copy of herself. (Besides the fact that Monty already knew how to use the effects for Blake cuz he used it for Connine is RvB) Sun Wukong is little different in his legend from the Journey to East. He is still a wild beast that needs to be "tamed" but Sun Wukong is not empty inside. In fact I don't think he is ever seriously lacking in anything inside him. He pretty much gains almost everything he is famous for (him summoning clones, becoming immortal, stealing the staff) and was a popular head figure amongst other monkeys (i may be wrong, it's been a while i read this tale) but he doesn't know how to control himself, which gets him sealed. A big part of Journey to the East is Sun learning to control himself and mature via the enligtenment of Buddisht teachings, and maybe that is why Sun in Rwby is always needing to focus/medtitate to use his semblance. Essentially, both characters are about transformation and learning, but in different ways due to different lackings. Blake is filled with good but is fearful and insecure about herself so she needs to learn to fill herself with the confidence, love and courage to fill her emptiness. Sun is full of confidence, warmth, courage and is earnest but his energy can get all over the place which is why he needs to better his focus and stay calm.

I think blake's semblance is really Ninja style, and she only makes clones. Because cloning is less taxing.

Blake is always running, so her clones will take a hit while she retreats. Sun never looks back so his clones will always go forward. Also loved this line from Miles in the save commentary: "I had a really dumb idea of, Sun keeps trying to send his clones out to hug Blake, but Blake just keeps leaving shadow clones behind to take the hug for her."

I have a few OCs with clone-like semblances. Chili Mojito absorbs Solar energy, boosting his speed and stamina and heating his aura if enough sunlight is consumed. This allows for after images and motion blur PLUS mirage allowing him to cast his image remotely. Thus the name Solar Blur. Hailey Thatcher has Straw Dummy which works like Blake and Ruby's semblances. She turns to straw temporarily, increasing her durability and flexibility, then sheds out leaving a husk in her place which she can set ablaze and fling at opponents. The Third (name undecided) has Scapegoat, fluffy sheep clouds.

This was really helpful with an OC I was making. He's based on Alexander the Great. Since his dad invented the Phalanx formation, I figured it would be cool to have a clone phalanx help him. Thanks to Rome Total War, I already know some weaknesses. Range attacks, quickly moving around it, attacks from behind. I was thinking 1 on each side of him. That way, he'll literally be front and center of the formation.

If Jaune amplified Sun’s semblance maybe they could make a clone army or one huge clone.

Just a thought I have since watching Sun’s semblance - that when he summons his clones he can only move or be in motion during the daytime. At night, he is always stationary when he summons his clones.

I was thinking of a team based off of the arts. One of them is drawing based and his semblance is called "Relief". Similar to Blake's "Shadow", Relief allows him to create hard-light copies of objects but at a weaker functionality. In my head canon hard-light operates in a blueprint fashion so a hard-light object can be fully copied. So something like Shadow + Velvet's Camera. He can either cast summon these object or channel them and has full telekinetic control over the reliefs. Dust can effect them directly but my main idea for it is to used elemental ammo. The big thing is how the character uses his semblance as size, complexity, summon, and duration are factors to aura consumption. Other characteristics are secret. UwU

This is making me think of what an incredible asset Jaune is to any team. Imagine him boosting Sun.

I’ve said since Vol.1 Blake has the best mastery over her semblance in team RWBY. She’s been able to use her semblance in the best way possible during fights, and the fact that it doesn’t waste Aura makes it way more useful.

Random Idea: What if using fire dust with Robin's Semblance burns the other person whenever they lie?

Can I just say that Sun has to have such a strong will/mind if he wants to not only control his clones, but give them aura to take hits, and make them as strong as him. Now that is powerful. Also quick side note: (I'm sorry if I'm rushing this question) But when are the other characters of your team going to be revealed? Your first character seemed sooooo in depth so I want to hear more of that!

I would love to see your thoughts on the idea that semblances are actually the little piece of magic that managed to stay with you. Even though magic was something that all could use I firmly believe that there was universal magic so magic anyone could learn to use, magic that was either harder to master or only a certain population could and then the magic that was unique for that individual person and that unique magic is what would have stayed with you to become your semblance, hence why some people have similar semblances like Sun and Blake, Clover and Qrow and why Wiess's semblance seems to look the most like magic (Magical Runes or Circles). For further explains let's look at Oz who was on both ends of the spectrum. If everyone could use all kinds of magic why was Ozma considered to be special so much so that the world called him a Legendary Hero? If everyone could do that something he could why call him special? Well easy maybe he could do something others couldn't like say, Time Magic without the need for Runes or Magic Circles. I say Time Magic because Oz himself is surrounded by time elements like his symbol being a Gear, his office being the inner workings of a clock, his cane being able to "Store Time". If you remember he says that his magic is dwindling not that it's gone. Looking at all the sources of magic that aren't Salem so like the maidens and Qrow and Raven's shapeshifting all came from Oz so it's safe to assume that he was capable of doing those types of magic and yet we don't see him actually using any of that.... because he's given those magics to others and is left with his unique magic, the magic he can't give away, the magic that would have been his semblance if he was born into the second wave of mankind. But wait I hear people, "If that's the case how come we haven't see him use it?" actually we have, his fight with Cinder. He's using it to put himself on fast forward and slow the glass shards she throws at him. Don't you think it was weird that a man that old was able to move so fast? But wait I hear you say, what about that energy ball thing? Isn't that just some kind of shield? Well, it probably could be used as one but I don't think that's the primary function. When we see it get used by Oscar it doesn't look like a shield. Allow me to explain, if it was a shield then it's not messing with the rate of speed and velocity of which Oscar is falling at and he's falling from Atlas back to the ground, that's a good couple hundred miles at least and when he lands there's no sizeable crater and when it touches the ground it dissipates, which leads me to think it's more of a time bubble than a shield. Like Oscar slowed himself down enough to safely land. Now in the Cinder fight it does look like a shield but then again Ozma and Prof. Ozpin had probably been together for at least a couple decades like 30+ years and Oscar only just got the ability. I'd love to see your take on this idea though.

I've always liked the idea of astral projection, so not while the same way, but it'd be projecting your arua outwards, creating a version of yourself wrapped around you that you pilot like a mech, basically giving yourself more durability, power and strength, but drains your arua while doing so.

Well Blake said in Chibi "It's always weird when these shadow clones don't vanish" and she made it disappear by touching it. And although of course we can't take that as Canon. when it comes to the characters and their semblances they are spot on to the originals. And that was the first time we saw her make a clone uninterrupted and without anyone hitting it immediately after. And the moment she touched it it vanished. And as you said in season 2 of RWBY proper she made that clone that stood still for a long while while they fought that team from Haven in the first episode. It only vanished after Riece hit it. But yeah i think they can stay up if she doesn't stop them, someone doesn't touch them, or her aura doesn't run out. And seeing as it seems her aura doesn't run out while she has them active (only once after activation) i think she can hold them forever uninterrupted.

I'm sorry, it's going to be a long post and it's from the top off my head. Will try to find a way to make it as short as possible. Character - Semblance - shown dust enhancable semblance? / uses dust another way? *Ruby Rose* - Petal burst - We have not seen her use an element to her petals, but I think it would be cool is she could add like ice to them and run into her opponents that way, but I don't think she can, because it's basicly her own body, how ever yes she has been see using dust to shoot Nora with an lightning dust bullet in volume 4. *Weiss Schnee* - Glyphs - Yes, she uses dust all the time to conduct toward her placed glyphs to either shoot out at enemies or block incoming attacks, she usually is seen using Ice dust from early on as volume 1 shooting at a giant Nevermore, to as late as volume 7 when fighting Marrow. Fun little fact, eventhough her nickname is the Ice Queen, her first introduction using dust was actually fire dust when she accidently set the Emerald forest on fire by fighting Beowolfs and she still uses fire to create a smaller version off the freezer burn and to finish off Marrow. In the fight agains Neon and Flynt she used Wind dust to block Flynt's sounds based attacks and in volume 6 she has used Earth dust to block an incoming blast from Cordoven's Iron giant mech. And in volume 2 we have seen her use lightning dust to activate Time dailation. Lastly she also use gravity dust to make black snowflake glyphs to manipulate enemy movements, to either push them back or pull them in closer. With the question did she use dust another way, she has, allthought it was more off a joke then anything because she waved a vial with dust once to make Ruby explode in volume 1 xD. We have yet to see it, but Winter could do the same. *Blake Belladonna* - Shadow - Yes, ever since volume 2 she got a dust cartridge from Weiss and she has use it ever since to give her clones all kinds off elements,. - Fire dust gives her exploding clones. - Earth dust makes the clones solid to block attacks. - Ice dust makes the clone solid but she uses this to stick the enemy to it, to try to disarm them. - Gravity dust to block their vision for a short period off time. - Lightning dust to turn back to a lightning bolt and stun them. Also she has used elemental (in this case Ice) bullets to freeze Ilia's whip and fire to set the mansion/her home on fire. *Yang Xiao long* - Burn - Never shown to use any kind off dust, personally I don't think you can enhance a strength increasing semblance because again like Ruby's we're talking about someones own body. *Jaune Arc* - Aura Amp - Only through his weapon with hard light dust to extend his shield and gravity dust to knock Neo back, both in volume 7. *Nora Valkyrie* - High Voltage - She needs electricity to trigger her semblance, either by natural causes like lightning strikes or unnatural ways like getting shot by ruby's lightning dust charged bullets or by her own Magnhild's which can store lightning dust incase she needs to activate her semblance. We have also seen her use pink dust in her cannisters she fires, so I'm thinking it's either fire dust or just pink gunpowder. *Pyrrha Nikos* - Polarity - She has never been shown using dust, but this one is cool is she had dust filled little metal orbs to fling with her semblance, shame she didn't had that. *Lie Ren* - Tranquility - Never shown to use any kind off dust. *Team CRDL* (Only Cardin) and only through his weapon to make his attacks have more impact through the fire dust in the red sphere in the middle off his mace. *Team STRQ* (Only Raven) only her weapon to give her sword differend kind off elements, she has also shown that she can forge the Soul calibur and uses ice to lock Cinder in place and used wind to lift up Vernal, but this is all because off magic. *Team SSSN* (only Neptune) and only through his Trident (Tri-hard, love the pun because he try hards, lol), he uses lightning dust agains Roman in the paladin and agains the NDGO girls. *Coco Adel* - Hype - Her semblance is all about coating dust to her weapon to make her minigun rounds more impactfull. *Fox Alistair* - Telepathy - Never shown using dust before and like Jaune's and Ren's semblance, it's not really combat based. *Velvet Scarlatina* - Photographic Memory - Only seen her use hard light through her weapon to make copies off weapons she photographed before hand. But it's implied she can only use each weapon once before switching to the next then that photograph is destroyed in the process to make the hard light copy. Only thing that does imply this was Team CFVY's introduction where Coco told Velvet to not waste it on a few grimm. *Yatsuhashi Daichi* - Memory Wipe - Never seen him using any kind off dust (or a range weapon for that matter). *Team NDGO* - (Both Dew and Octavia) and only though their weapons. Dew used wind dust to create tornados and Octacia could send out fire arch attacks throughout her dagger to set some incoming coconuts (off all things) ablaze. *Team BRNZ* (Only Nolan) and only through his weapon Cattle Prod to make it a stun rod. Which directly backfired because he used it on Nora xD. *Team ABRN* (Only Reese) and only through her weapon to shoot out green (possibly wind) projectiles and she could absorb an element through her hoverboard to melt the ice arround Nadir's legs. *Flynt Coal* - Killer Quartet - He has seen using dust vials in his concept art off his trumpet, also in volume 7 we have seen him briefly use the dust, resulting his soundwave to take on differend colours, we have seen a bright orange, a green, a yellow and a blue soundwave respectively in that scene, so most likely fire - Earth - lightning and ice in that order. And was directly floored by Jaune (off all people) after that scene xD. *Neon Katt* - Rainbow trail (not officially name dropped yet though) - only through her glowstick nunchakus she used Ice dust to mess with Yang and freeze her foot and then her arm. *Kobalt and Ivori* - Both still pretty unknown, they were introduced in volume 7 as the remaining members off team FNKI, but never spoke, nor have we seen Kobalt's weapon He up untill now fought Oscar bare handed (so maybe his gloves are hsi weapons, since it has little yellow studs into them) and Ivori uses a whip, which does has blue crystals imbedded, so maybe also Ice, but we have yet to see. *Penny Polendina* - Yet to show any kind off element, I asume she can now she's the winter maiden, but that would fall under magic, not dust usage. *Ciel Soleil* - Never seen using any kind off dust or weapon, she was just there in Penny's team. *Ace-ops* - We know their semblances, being Clover's Good fortune, Vine's Vine, Elm's Roots, Harriet's Super speed and Marrow's Stay command or freeze command. But they never used any kind off dust. *Happy huntresses* - We know Robyn's Lie detection, Fiona's Matter absorption, May's Invisibility field/cloak and nothing about Johanna's, and only Robyn used dust, but only through her weapon to make an exloding arrow to blow up in Tyrian's face. *Team CMEN* (sorry for the Immaturity, but I just can't unsee it xD) and Roman added to that to make Cinder's team. *Cinder Fall* - Scorching Caress - Used fire dust in her clothing and used to ignite that with her Scorching Caress to throw it toward her enemies like Glynda, also she used to use her semblance to make volcanic ash dust into glass, now she does use all kind off elements, but this is again because off Magic. *Emerald Sustrai* - Hallucinations - Never used dust. *Mercury Black* - Only though his legs he uses wind dust shots to make his big attacks. *Neo politan* - Overactive imagination - Never used dust, also her semblance is mostly used to disquise, it's not a battle kind off semblance (as in to increase her speed or strength or to take a hit, but more to confuse the opponents). *Roman torchwick* - Only through his weapon to make unstable fire ammo to give his shots more off an explosive impact or to scatter it out with his hilt/cane. *Salem's inner circle* - Salem can use magic, Tyrian's semblance is Aura disruption, Hazel has Numbing agent, Watts's is unknown and Tock had her Invulnerability minute. But only 2 off them used dust which are Hazel and Watts, Hazel can cancel out the pain that dust crystals normally puts a person through and there for can inject dust crystals straight into his body resulting him to channel both lightning and fire through his palms, which offcourse backfired because he grabbed Nora while having lightning dust injected. and Watts only though his weapons he used an ice round through his revolver and hard light through his rings to create either platforms or a shield agains Ironwood's gun fire. *Ozpin's team* *Ozpin* can use magic to an extend, he gifted the first maidens their powers, as well to Qrow and Raven to transform and his cane the Long memory can store time. But this is all magic, not dust. *Glynda Goodwitch* - Telekenises - She has seen using her semblance to knock away Grimm with gravity dust and to launch up Ice dust to create storm clouds. *Bartholomew Oobleck* - Only though his weapon he uses fire dust heat up his coffee or to ignite the tip off his club and then proceed to set Zwei on fire, lol xD. *Peter Port* - We have yet to see him really use his Battleaxe/Blunderbuss called blowhard, he shot it a few times at the start off the invasion off Grimm on Beacon, but yet to hit anything with it or to show if he uses dust based rounds. Feel free to chime in if I forgot someone or what he/she has done or could do with dust. It's almost as lenghty off a comment as when I'm trying to do a analysis off the festival videos xD. Hopefully it's helpfull. It was fun to do.

When I was watching the part about semblances similar to Komamura's bankai (starting at about 10:20) I got this idea for a semblance that basically copies Nero's devil trigger from DMC4, a larger, spectral clone that mirrors one's movements to enhance attack and/or defense, with possible non-combat applications as well. What do you guys think?

8:00 Blake can create her clones and then leave them there, if they aren't immediately destroyed (as they most often are when in battle) they stay there immobile. So that particular clone (and the one in v3c1 during her fight with Reese) was a decoy and Blake was hiding elsewhere

A few questions; 1. Can ones aura induce changes or affect the biology of its user? This is based on how aura can heal wounds as seen in the show. 2. If electronics can measure and even transfer aura, could an aura user manipulate the aura of others with the right Semblance? (One that happens to be able to do that, not what Marcus Black had). 3. What if Remnant has its equivalent to cryptids in our world? How would that play out? 4. If Dust is real, what would it be as a chemical or element on the Periodic table?

I would love to see a video on the semblances that can use dust.

My redone OCs Semblance can technically be a clone style one though it isn't a Clone My OC that I remade has a semblance called "Rebel's Shadow" Which creates an Aura based Being that can fight for him. My OC's Semblance can be referred to as an Illusion Semblance I guess or maybe a new type? A cool thing I've done with this Semblance I thought up is that it takes up more power the more my OC forms bonds with the others in the RWBY Universe If you don't know this semblance is based on the Carl Jung Philosophy of the human psyche and the Persona game series This OC mainly came out of the Blazblue Cross Tagbattle game where team RWBY met Persona users like Yu Narukami My idea is that after returning to Remnant from the Phantom Field or what ever it was called a new character is introduced into their universe who's semblance directly connects to the people Ruby met in that fused world

Blake basically teleports. Her being pushed in a direction would not allow her to do the stuff she does. Like in the fight against Adam, she appeared after her clone disappeared and we would have been able to see her moving in the background

I've got a viking-themed OC whose main deal is companionship and unity and stuff like that. His semblance lets him duplicate himself, but at the cost of reducing his maximum aura. If he creates one clone, both have 50% of the maximum aura, and are locked to that level, and so on. His main role in combat is to slow down the enemies, which works really well because he can just create 49 clones of himself, and then all 50 of them, each with 2% aura, form a shield wall. The ones further back stick their swords through the gaps between the shields, and that's about when anything behind them is safe from non-flying Grimm. He trained his aura's defensive capabilities and regeneration, abusing the hell out of his semblance because he gains all the knowledge of his clones when they disappear, so now his shield wall is basically impenetrable. Even if a Big Ursa crashes into it at full speed, the force of impact is dispersed to the point where the clones only drop to 1%, but bounce right back due to their aura regeneration. However, the clones bloat up and burst if they get more than 100 meters away from him. Still, clones can also make clones, so one can go 90 meters away from him and make a new clone, and so on, allowing these clones to create a kind of barrier around a village, for example. Also, the semblance copies everything the guy has at the time of use, including people. Now imagine Nora not being aware of this, talking to Ruby like normal, and then suddenly Ruby floats into the air, bloats up and bursts into sparkles and smoke.

Let’s talk about ozpin’s and Oscar’s they are the same. We see in the fall of beacon for a brief moment ozpin is using his aura as a force field. We see this used by Oscar in volume 7 as well the bubble he built is his aura extended around him. Theoretically with that semblance and juane’s they could protect an entire city, but not for to long as both do have limited aura but it’s a good thing if they could find a way to make juane’s aura unlimited.

Something I remember noticing in the first fight with Torchwick is that Blake almost seems to phase through his body when using her semblance. I find it rather funny that both Ruby and Blake are able to use their semblances to double jump.

I remember reading in the RWBY manga a story about someone (Neo) selling a stone clone of Blake online. If this story could be considered anywhere near canon then, depending on the material, her clones could stick around for a while.

Honestly I've always thought that Weiss' Semblance has been so OP compared to most other semblances, I won't be surprised if they make it so magic is somehow involved. I mean Weiss' summons and Sun's clones appear to be virtually the same thing or at least created by a similar process, as both the clones and summons are largely see through but the same color as the person's aura color. Only the summons are literally better in basically everyway as they can change size and can be quite a bit larger than Weiss herself as well as seemingly draining far less of Weiss' aura as she has yet to have been shown to struggle with having her summons active for extended periods of time. We also see Weiss can still use her glyphs in any other way she pleases while her summon is actively fighting. My point is they did Sun dirty asf with his strict limits and if he comes back to the show I hope he gets a training arc and learns to better use/control his clones so he can use the for extended periods of time like Weiss' summons and maybe even change the size of a single clone.

I feel like Salem is going to have something interesting to say about Glyphs, since it's the closest thing to true magic that isn't originated in the old world.

I think Sun's semblance should get one more advantage. If I were to come up with it, I'd say they'd be able increase in heat and brightness.

I would love if we had some more "utility" style semblances that aren't necessarily directly powerful. (Spoilers for JoJo's below) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has some really cool abilities that take fights in a completely different direction from the usual brawls. For instance, Joseph's Hermit Purple lets him utilize cameras, TV's and other technology to get clairvoyant clues about his opponent's whereabouts or actions. Abbachio's Moody Blues lets him replay events from the past to see what happened, he can rewind/fast forward etc. The Darby Brothers' stands force their opponents to play video games or gamble against them, putting their soul on the line while doing so. Josuke's Crazy Diamond lets him revert any object or person to a state before they were damaged, an ability he used very creatively in many of his fights. This makes battles so much more interesting and strategic. I think RWBY has a ton of potential to introduce these types of abilities as semblances :3

Could you please make a video explaining HOW dust can help the user by combining/adding it to their semblance? Such as Blake using dust to make her shadows have elemental properties but HOW or WHAT IS THE METHOD.

If I had to have a semblance, it would be time manipulation I could stop time, rewind it and go forward in time, if this semblance is in RWBY there would be so many things this character could do to mess up remnant and if Salem had this person under her command, no wonder so many silver eyed warriors went missing after all Salem probably got tired of hiring bounty hunters there just to reliable, so I could see it happen in RWBY although I doubt it

If you look at the eyes Salem’s or the the Grimm they also have red eyes but there’s nobody besides them that I’ve seen with that eye color. So do you think that they are in the blood line of Salem? Because Salem is very old but always look young because of the gods, so she could have had more than one love some one who wasn’t Ozpin at all. So they would have had SOME thing from her so they could have gotten her eyes! Am I the only one kind of disappointed with the lack of references to Journey to the West in Suns character? If you don’t know, Sun Wukong is based off of a character with the same name from the 14th century, Chinese novel named Journey to the West. In the story, Sun Wukong is a magical, demonic, immortal monkey warrior who is the king of monkeys. The story follows him and three other characters, two other magical warriors named Sha Wujing (a former general in the heavenly army of China who fell from grace and became the demon of a river) and Zhu Baije (a former attendant to the court of heaven who was cursed after going after the wrong lady and became a pig demon) and a monk named Tripitaka who is a reincarnation of a heavenly Buddhist named Golden Cicada. The basic gist is that Sun and the two other warriors are escorting Tripitaka from China to India to gather sacred Buddhist texts that hold the key to true enlightenment. There’s a lot of potential for inspiration and I wish CRWBY had taken more for their Sun Wukong than just the name and some inspired traits.
