Fun thing to note: When hit by Apathy despair, Yang is the one who tries to find shortcuts, and tries to rationalize her decisions. Just like her mother.

- Blake's glances at Yang in front of the fire makes me feel for her, cause she legitimately doesn't get what she did wrong. She's trying so hard to be there for Yang and honestly the two need to have a sit down to understand where each is coming from. - I love how their treatment of alcoholism is maturing. Before it was a gag or light-hearted thing, now they're putting the proper negative toning to it and especially in being more blatant about what's fueling Qrow's (heavy depression). Not to mention showing Ruby not responding to it in a comical way but seriously. - The cinematic framing of the "life must be protected" scenes is so good. - Yang grabbing Blake's hand and her little sound effect afterwards is so good (and hyping af xD). - Someone in my circle brought up an interesting idea that may be a thing if technically Weiss did kill any of The Apathy with the fire, namely if that'd mean for whatever reason she'd be able to summon her own version of them. - I definitely love how The Apathy open the door to more forms of attack for grimm going forward. Its not all about their physical strength, but other forms of power they can exhibit. - I'm curious if the idea of humans being monsters enough to use grimm will be a recurring thing or was just to set that idea up as a background element. Especially going into the Atlas arc where I could imagine it playing a part, given how they tend to not care about ethics/morality (or at least those of Jacques's status). - Yang's face as their leaving shows just how much the whole ordeal rattled her likely for several reasons. One as pointed out by others is that it likely brought up feelings that she'd felt before post-The Fall when she went into a depression, but also because it put her in a position where she was unable to do anything to help those around her including Blake. Anyway I usually just watch without commenting but a friend of mine mentioned that commenting is a way to support a reactor so I'm commenting xD

I'm sure you've read it by now but we got confirmation, *THIS* is Miles' favorite Grimm. Evidently it predates Volume 1 in design and concept and was supposed to show up in Volume 4 but got pushed back to here. It takes heavy influence from the Firefly movie Serenity, where the government of the planet Miranda tried to use chemicals to calm the entire population and they all just sat down and let themselves wither away because of it.

Miles said the Apathy were planned since an early volume, but they didn't use them since the team wasn't strong enough to deal with them yet. The refrain "I'm tired" is the same as "I would prefer not to" from the story that inspired the Apathy.

I like how Weiss paused after setting the alcohol on fire as if in that brief moment, she thought of her mother, or that's what I'm interpreting from that moment.

The Apathy terrify me, I had a bad depression phase hit me mid way through november.....and I did nothing but stay in bed and the only thing I felt was worthless and sad. It happens every year around this time because I just look back on the year and I just feel like I wasted it and my life on meaningless crap.....Im doing a bit better now having talked with a few of my friends.

I don't think it was the silver eyes that protected Ruby. I fall on the side of Ruby's personality that made her more resistant to The Apathy

Qrow's face as the girls are dragging him away and he sees the burning grimm is worrying me. Does that expression mean shock, and disappointment in himself, or is the sight of the human-like shapes on fire triggering a memory? All I find myself saying this volume, is "poor Qrow".

From what I understand this episode was based off a short story called Bartleby, the Scrivener which is about a man that slowly becomes apathetic until he finally dies of starvation.

I think we can safely say this is an awareness episode for how bad depression can get in severe cases. Sadly,not everyone realizes the danger of depression, how it makes you feel...nothing, like there is a void inside you and you can't really tell what you're feeling, if anything. How hard it becomes to keep moving forward or be motivated and to even be able to care at times. I hope Qrow takes this as a lesson to come to Ruby or Yang about his problems instead of always drowning his problems in alcohol. His drinking problem needs to be address as such, a problem that is dangerous for him and everyone around him.

You mention damage was added to Crescent Rose, it was actually already added since the RWBY Character Short way back in 2016 where you notice the dents and scratches around it.

This episode and reaction kind of got me worried about myself. I've had no energy, I haven't wanted to talk to anybody, and I just seem overall apathetic to everything. I'm failing half of my classes and I honestly don't care even though before having an 80 got me anxious. Maybe I should go get that checked out

Good reaction. Like most reactors missed all the clues about the grim being called The Apathy and not knowing the definition during the reaction. Miles made a great tweet. The opposite of love is not caring. Maria is also a former silver eyes. Everything she sees is blue or blued out.

I've always assumed that the scrolls don't need to be recharged because the yellow diamond shaped thing on the front in energy dust.

Thank goodness, it's finally unblocked. I've been looking forward to this all week. This chapter is my favorite of the Volume so far. There are a lot of really cool visuals, but the story itself is awesome. I had flashes from Volume Two when Yang, Weiss and Blake were questioning the mission. Maria's monologue was beautiful. Keep up the great work. Fingers crossed that you won't have any more blocking issues. Have a Merry Christmas.

I also like how Maria was able to respond a bit better; a few episodes back she said she was a bit hard of hearing, so the Apathy's screams probably didn't affect her quite as badly because of that.

Interesting the detail they put in here, Blake was much more intensely affected because she has 2 sets of years, plus sensitive hearing in general. And Maria was the least affected because of her old age, she likely has some hearing loss. Just thought it was neat.

Finally free from RU-vid's jail I see. Great to see your reaction to this. The Apathy really open up the possibilities for Grimm. Could there be others that effect people's thoughts and emotions.

weird thing is the apathy is basically what my antidepressants do. they just shut everything down. not to the point where I cant function, mind you, but its scary the resemblance it bears. once I got off of it I was in terrible pain, but at least I could feel again.

Fun fact Bartleby is the name of a hired clerk who as time went by became more apathetic towards his work to the point that when his boss would ask him to do something he'd respond "I'd prefer not to" this went on to the point that he would sleep and even refuse to leave the office always giving the same emotionally dead response "I'd prefer not to" so when he was forcibly removed and put in prison he died of starvation preferring not to eat due to his apathy. Also the dead body you see at 13:56 is actually the Huntsman who was hired to work for the Brunswick farm, meaning he probably either woke up and tried to kill the Apathy to save everyone but didn't know he'd be fighting a whole pack or managed to keep himself alive after everyone else died and attempted to avenge them, more than likely the former. I personally find the Apathy most horrifying because they remind me of when my depression was at it's worst and I'd be completely tired but not able to sleep and some days I'd try to sleep the day away literally feeling nothing but tired and couldn't bother with food or friends I just always felt exhausted Also if stroking a cat releases endorphins so how many cats would you need to counter an Apathy?

I'm not through watching your reaction so I apologize if you already noticed this, but someone pointed out to me that while Ruby and Maria seem to be the least effected by the Apathy- likely due to their eyes, Blake is the *most* effected because she technically has TWO sets of ears. And cats have great hearing so the "shrieking" or whatever the heck it is would definitely get to her the most. :(

This entire episode felt like just Ocarina of Times Bottom of the Well as an anime episode.

I love the build up towards the Apathy reveal both in this chapter and last chapter, Maria reading through the dairies of the former farm owner, the reuse of the phrase "I'm tired", all of it building up to one of the most unique Grimm types seen so far. I also think it's important to note that both Ruby and Maria seemed to take much longer to be affected by the Apathy, with Ruby only getting affected when all of her teammates were telling her to drop the lamp in the well. (At least until they all have to find the relic anyway) Hopefully it's something that comes up again in a later chapter or volume if they face a similar threat to the Apathy. The reveal of all the Apathy in one of the tunnels was creepy, all of them just huddled up as Ruby picks up the relic. Then all of them following RWBY and Maria (Don't question how she got down there, she has Grandma powers) slowly as they ran before cornering them at the locked door, the pacing was so good. The screams weakening each of them to the point that Blake was ready to accept her death and the Grimm hand, I'll admit, for a second, I was expecting that to be the end of her. All of this has made the Apathy one of the best types of Grimm seen on the show so far, especially since it's less of a physical threat and more of a psychological one as well as what you said about them as well. Seeing Ruby's silver eyes getting used again properly in this chapter was a welcome sight, it's been almost three volumes since they were actually used. Maria being a former silver-eyed warrior until she lost her eyes was also a great reveal, really hoping that we get to see her give Ruby as much training as she can given what we know about them as of Chapter 8. Then there's Qrow and his drinking, he's clearly the one worst affected by the Apathy considering how much he drank while there, hopefully it doesn't have a knock on effect and cause him to drink himself to death in the later chapters of this volume. This has been by far one of the best chapters of RWBY so far thanks to the pacing, dialogue and music all being on point. Also, Christmas Tree is going up soon, sadly not a real one because I live in the UK and we don't have many real ones Hope that you have a great day and that the next video isn't blocked at all

I have a theory that Qrow has seen the Apathy before and the reason why he was wide eyed is because it has something to do with Summer Rose and when he nearly died

There's a prevailing theory that one of the big contributors to why we're part of a generation(s) that suffer so much depression and other mental health issues is simply the double-edged sword of social media and the accessibility of world-wide information in general. We are constantly bombarded with awesome stories of awesome people doing awesome things, and there is an innate sense to compare ourselves to that, and always end up looking like the biggest loser. The trickle-down debts of past generations falling onto us and other economic unbalances also exacerbate the sensation of monumental efforts leading to minuscule progress. But- as Monty would say- Keep moving forward.

"Which they got past once before". In all honesty, the vaults are better than any other way to hide them. Yeah, they got into the vault once, but that's because Raven opened the door. In fact, the one vault Salem COULD open with Cinder, she can't even find. So not only are they well hidden, the "keys" are almost impossible to find. There are no safer places.

Keep in mind though apathy and depression are not the same. Apathy is when you have loss or no interest in activity, having motivation or willingness to do anything. Depression is different when negative human emotions causes you to feel depressed. For example, I don’t deserve to be a good person because I said bad things to people close to me. This is a good example of depression. This grim is also much more interesting than the grimms I’ve seen for the past volumes. And I liked this one because it has no purpose to attack or kill. However, weigh you down or feel as if you could not get up. Because your body could not respond to get up as if you want to stand. Instead your laying on the floor and this is an example of apathy. Unwillingness to respond or do anything. Apathy leads to procrastination and people who barely does anything for others or themselves. And so...that is the reason why the apathy or the aura of the apathy killed all the people from the little town. The unwillingness to do anything, and become tired of trying to do anything on their own or to help others.

When Weiss set fire to the house, it didn't seem to be effective against the Apathy, plus everything was left open. Does this mean The Apathy could start travelling to different areas?

I think qrow needs something to wake him up bit like someone needs to show him hes not useless cause hes suppose to lead them while oz is basically holed up inside oscar anyway in the mean time i guess ruby will lead cause it shows she wasnt affected by the apathy till morning she was fine while the rest werent that night ....... and she quikly snap out of her own when she dropped the lamp and her scream knock some sense to the rest of team RWBY i think with how oz is right now and how qrow is right now ruby is fit to take the lead also regardless of what they recently learn about salem ruby is still intent to protect the lamp despite everthing she went thru shes showing signs of a leader oz once said for them to follow she must show them that she can be an example so im guessing her training had gone well a leader must always stand tall

bartleby brunswick was an idiot, if he hadn't captured two apathy's, an put them into the cellar, not knowing that their presence would draw in the rest of the pack, then none of that would ever happened, I mean, I get that his farm was having financial problems, but the smart thing he should've done was probably moving his family to a different continent where there's less cold weather, and that they can grow better vegetables and stuff, but he didn't do any of that, he literally drove his own family, including himself, to their graves.

Apathy is but a single symptom of depression. They are not mutually exclusive to each other. I can agree that you could say Qrow has seriously unresolved issues that are causing depression. However for team RWBY it is simply the feeling of apathy and nothing more. Apathy and Depression ARE NOT the same thing. Now I feel better.
