Ozpin: My first girlfriend turned into an immortal evil witch that almost destroyed all of humanity.

23:41 I highly doubt that they were the maidens, but I believe Ozpin gave the maidens their power partly because they reminded him of his four lost daughters.

"So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face." Here I think we see the core of Salem's plan. Her last attempt to finally die. When the relics are united and the gods summoned, they may destroy the entire world then. So Salem is keeping humanity divided and gathering the relics for that time. So that when the gods are called, Humanity will be shown as irredeemable.

"We can't disrupt the balance and resurrect your love" Gives Salem Immortality Wipes out humanity Gives her love Oz the ability to reincarnate Ok.....um......quick quesh.....what exactly is the balance here?

After all the years of speculation...the explanation for the moon is...the god of darkness...bumped into it.

So Salem was cursed for pulling the old 'Mom said no, so ask Dad' on the gods. Like the theories. Hope your video doesn't get blocked.

*Little comparison here;* Ozma's choice to become the savior of humanity is a parallel of Pyrrah's choice in becomig the Fall Maiden.

Here's how I see Ozpin and Salem's daughters, and the four Maidens. Ozpin and Salem's daughters were all killed in the crossfire as their parents fought each other on that fateful night in the castle. Who knows *how* many years later, Ozpin, now an old hermit, met four young women, who each resembled his long lost beloved daughters so much, that he eventually decided to gift them with magic.

Ozpin and Salem are as human as all of us. It's a strange sensation to humanise heroes and villains and define the cause of their conflict to be so simple. So human. True tragedies in the world are caused, not by right and wrong, but by two rights. I could not truly hate Ozpin or Salem after this episode. In truth I cannot blame either.

Well, I would say Ozma had to go thorugh the states of grief once he got killed by the love of his life, aknowledging, that the woman he loves is no more. What remains of her is, in his eyes, pure evil and since he fought for the righteous cause all his life, he wants to rid the world of evil. But then he is told, that this is beyond possible, he cannot rid the world of the evil that is embodied by his former wife. So now his goal is to bring humanity closer together by hosting sports events, enabeling communication and diplomacy between kingdoms and so on and so forth. All hope is not lost, but his task just got a fucking hell of a lot harder, because making humanity at large act less selfish and short sighted is a pretty tough thing to do... Just look at the news and you know what I am talking about. This show can tell us something about ourselves and the way we live together. Ozma and Salem in our world are just not people, they are ideas. There is so so much in the RWBY universe that can be found in our very own world, it is almost scary.

The relic of Choice made me immediately think of Pyrrha, and the only thing that wasn't reduced to ash.

Fun things to ponder - - Ozma's later reincarnation that had a family, look at his kids - they have silver eyes. Coincidence? - Salem falling into the fountain of life was very similar to Cinder falling into the pool below the vault. - Cinder had stated the Vault of the Spring Maiden was unusually ornate and wondered what the extra effort was for. - The Realm of Light contained a pool and a tree of golden leaves. - The Vault of the Spring Maiden contained a pool and a tree of golden leaves. - The "dragon continent" is shaped like the dragon form of the God of Darkness and has been speculated as being where Salem is located for years now. - Anima's western coastline is shaped like an Eastern dragon, much like the God of Light's dragon form. - As shown when humanity is being annihilated, the blast originates from the mountains. So, if the pools of destruction still remain, does the fountain of life? If so, could it be that the reason for the Vault being so ornate was because it was built atop the Fountain of LIfe and incorporated whatever remained of that tree? Haven is at the top of the mountain, after all. If so, being that the pools of destruction imbued Salem with the essence of destruction and the fountain of life made her immortal, is it possible that Raven did kill Cinder when she was frozen solid, but that the fountain of life is what she fell into and it brought her back to life? If so, would she now be immortal as well? Could she end up being a wildcard that turns against Salem, creating a foe she cannot kill and therefore helps her learn the importance of life and death? "You must learn the importance of life and death, only then may you rest." Salem cannot be destroyed because of her immortality, but the gods specified how her immortality can be ended. This is what my brain does when I've had too much caffeine and not enough sleep, only to watch RWBY before finally passing out...

As the Gods said, Only when you understand the importance of Life and Death can you rest. You cant beat Salem, just change her mind.

As with the old stories of djinn, wording was always very important. Ospin/Ozma asked the wrong question. He specifically asked "How do I destroy Salem?", and gets told "You can't.". Notably it isn't said that it can't be done, only that he couldn't do it. But asking if Salem could be destroyed also seems to not be the right question for a few reasons. Firstly, asking how to do it would have been a better way to go about it. Secondly, destroying Salem I believe isn't the pertinent course of action. Salem's curse of immortality can only be broken when she understands the importance of life and death. The knowledge to be sought out is how if at all can Salem redeem herself and break her curse, along with how humanity can become united. I don't know if either of those things are even possible, but it seems like the right path to prevent judgement. This season definitely has me in a fog as to what will happen next, but I'm certainly enjoying the ride!

Ozma has been playing the longest game of Keep Away in history to prevent the literal judgement day from happening, because there's nothing he can do to really stop Salem. Shit sucks. I really feel as though he still gets too much hate directed at him. He has been beaten into a corner for hundreds, maybe thousands of years and can't think of a better way to save humanity. While he's not perfect in this endeavor, cut the poor guy some slack. He's probably stopped Salem from wiping everyone from existence hundreds of times over. That's gotta count for something, right?

Anyone else just feel bad for Ozma? He didn't deserve this treatment...

I propose that Salem's overall goal is either to gain the ultimate powers of the relics and summon back the brothers to rub it in their faces, to strike out against them once again in her bitterness. And, even if she fails, she'd hopefully die and move on. It's a win-win scenario for her.

I can't help but feel awful for Salem. She just wanted the love that was taken from her back and the gods saw it as a bad investment. She was cursed to live forever, she tried suicide, duels, and much more to die, but she can't. She tried so hard and eventually it ruined her mind, her body, and it ruined the world. I never thought Ozpin was in the wrong, nor have I ever thought Salem in the right, but I feel awful for the poor girl that was ruined by everything.

Now that we know The Deal, I'm left with one thought above all others: Salem wasn't right, but she sure as hell wasn't wrong, either.

I heard an amazing theory and I think it makes so much sense. People died from the hands of the gods turn to ash and now new humans have crystals of dust capable of magic. DUST CRYSTALS ARE PEOPLE

I like the way they didn't make it just a generic lovers quarrel. Salem doesn't want to kill Oz simply because he tried to leave her, but because he defied her. She's a surprisingly sympathetic villain, or at least her in the beginning.

Ozma made one big mistake and that was trying to kill Salem instead of trying to work with her and heal her pain. He was sent back to redeem humanity and he couldn't redeem his own love?!? That and keeping secrets from her when they first met. Funny how he didn't learn from that.

I love that Oz is presented as basically a good hearted hero through all of this. It explains why he was chosen to be the steward. The parts that make him shady are all the things he's done while building defenses and loosely organizing all of humanity to help fight a war that cannot be won.

Gods were like "Let's make extreme choice to make her understand our point." Salem got to the extreme and Ozma (ozpin) got the other extreme... For me it was like why did Ozma and Salem were that far... Why wouldn't they just live happily ever after...

Every mans first thought after a messy divorce: "How do I kill my exwife? I cant... NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I know tons of people have brought it up, but the specific wording of that question is some classic Genie shenanigans. "How do I destroy Salem?" "You can't." Ozpin can't. That doesn't mean she can't be destroyed by someone else. There is also the possibility of stopping her without destroying her. EDIT: Also that moment when Ozpin and Salem's conflict is the craziest custody battle in history.

This is gonna be an essay of a post about why *_The gods are dicks._* (note: i said dicks, not _evil_ ) The balance of life and death thing is the only thing i agree with them on. In fact, all gods are dicks. No deity really possesses the emotional understanding towards their charges to be anything less. Its like having an ant farm. Sure you might not immediately kill them and thats cool, but you are physically incapable of understanding an ants mind or life. You will always feel so vastly superior, that it doesn't really matter if its in a "benevolent" way. Being good by "allowing" people to live, is still fucked up morally. You cant connect with them, or feel for them, except in the most abstract, pitying way. Notice that the "good" god was actually the more out of touch. He didn't say he cared about salem when she first showed up, even in a vague "a king cares for all his subjects" way. No. He specifically said he _pitied_ her. The dark god, even with and even _because_ of his flaws and feelings of inadequacy towards his older brother, actually hits more emotional, human notes than the god of light. They're still arrogant and not understanding of humanity. Humanity is incapable of not causing conflict, because things like free will exist, and they were created that way. If you are sentient enough to understand that you are capable of doing things for your own benefit at the cost of others, so to will you be aware that others can do the same. Even in the most Good hearted person, there would still be distrust towards others to a point The gods are the same, incapable of being truly on each others side unless fighting a common enemy--salem. In this episode alone, they demonstrate their hypocrisy. They can fight and be in conflict and not be punished, but humans cant. In fact, i daresay that if there were more than 2 gods--enough for a "species", then the gods would find themselves fighting among each other just the same as humans. The only reason they dont fight with human is because it would be like 2 humans fighting an ant farm--its so easy theres no point. And salems punishment is the stupidest punishment if they wanted her to learn. (And it undermines everything they said about the balance of life and death. They wouldnt unbalance it to help a human, but they completely unbalanced it (killing everyone, making salem immortal, bringing back oz) to _spite_ a human.) It was always only ever about pride for them. They're the all powerful gods, did they really think that to give her power like that, and leaving her with only negative experiences with them, that shes suddenly going to decide not to fuck with the gods, which she was perfectly willing to do as a regular human? No. That is a punishment designed to make her suffer. And sure she had used their gift against them, but they also were clearly in no real danger. To them, it was a matter of pride and nothing else. They wanted to be worshipped, and when humans didnt want to worship them, instead of just leaving the humans to their own devices, they obliterated every single one for the actions of a relative few. Idk about you, but if i gave a bunch of children water guns out of the kindness of my heart, and they went and shot me with water bc they didnt like me later, I'd take the water guns away maybe, but i wouldn't murder them. "But they were actually trying to kill the gods!!" Yeah and the kids could've been actually trying to kill me with water guns, the point is, i was never in any real danger, no matter the intent so i obviously wouldnt murder the kids in retaliation. The gods obviously knew that they would have no effect on them. And they decided the punishment for a useless murder attempt by a few was the successful murder of everyone. Fuck that. Were we meant to actually root for these guys? To cheer at the punishment they gave salem? PLUS sending oz to kill her, knowing who she was to him, instead of just doing it themselves. Whether they gave him a choice or not, much like oz with pyrrha, it wasnt much of a choice, with many details omitted. Notice the god of light even failed to mention any part that he had played in the situation, deflecting all blame to his brother, as if he hadnt sat back and let, and likely even approved of, his brother killing everyone. At that point they surely had realized she wasnt _learning_ anything, but do they clean up the mess themselves? No. They send her husband/lover, who had done literally nothing wrong at that point, to do it for them and die (over and over again) trying. Fuck the gods. Even the whole "one last chance" thing is one more thing to yank humanities chain. They've literally given oz an impossible task. Someone tried to say they had "rules" but they are the ones who make the rules, they could literally do whatever they want. They chose it to be the way it is. Even the balance thing turned out to be useless because they quickly both revived someone (and made sure it would happen again and again), obliterated everyone, and made someone immortal. It seems the whole "balance must be maintained" was more "eh this isnt a good enough reason to shift the balance" Tldr: the gods are dicks, and this episode has me convinced that not bringing the relics together would be for the best

I have a theory that at least one daughter survived and her watered down magic (from having offspring with non-magical people) became semblances. Time will probably prove me wrong but I guess we'll see.

I think it is not like "light" and "dark" situation the reason why Salem cannot die. I think it is simple. Only the gods can kill her. And for that, Oz has to summon them. But then... if he summons them, they will judge humanity. So there lies the problem.

They dropped SO much lore right there, and yet somehow we still don't know anything about the silver eyes. Bravo RT, bravo.

The God of Light being an Eastern Dragon and the God of Darkness being a Western Dragon is pretty significant to their characters: In Eastern(Oriental) Culture, Dragons are chimerical creatures with Ox tails, Stag antlers and wingless, serpentine bodies with four limbs. Seen as benevolent deities who inhabit bodies of water of which they can manipulate into powerful storms, they represent wisdom, strength, harmony and good luck, and are revered so greatly that they were the symbol of the Chinese Emperor. These traits go perfectly for the God of Light, who's domain resides within a lake were life grows bountifully. However by contrast, in Western Culture, Dragons typically possessed lizard-like bodies, with six limbs (four legs and a pair of wings), spikes running down their backs, and horns. These creatures breathed both fire and toxins and represented a great evil that needed to be slain, normally by a knight blessed by God or a great Warrior from various myths. They are said to reside in mountains or caves, and no life dare inhabits near their homes. These traits befit the God of Darkness, whose domain is lifeless with pools of black muck that only the foul monsters called Grimm spawn from.

Salem did NOT act out of Love. She Acted out of Childish petty Selfishness. If all she wanted was to be with Ozma, then when the God of Light denied her request to bring him back, she could have asked to be united with him in the Afterlife. A request that the GoL could have easily granted without it disrupting the life/death balance he established with his brother. Instead She Threw a Tantrum like a Petulant Child whose favorite toy was taken away from them and Decided that is SHE can't have her way, she will burn down the place. Contrast that with Ozma who asked to be in the Afterlife, to be With the woman he Truly loved, and when informed that she was on Remnant, chose to join her even when the GoL told his that she no longer the woman he loved. Salem's lack of Grace is what ultimately Doomed her and the world with her.

You know, it didnt dawn on me until last night, but when Jinn said that she can answer two more questions, i THINK i know who asked the first question: Raven. Think about it: she said the more secrets uncovered, the more horrifying the world gets. Something among those lines. Either way, how else could she have known about Ozpin's past?

"How do I destroy Salem?" "YOU can't" Doesn't mean someone ELSE or somebodies else can't.......

This chapter was packed with so much good info, I'm still dealing with the fact that they answered all these questions. The gods were very interesting to see, especially since we know they both have domains on Remnant (The one of the God of Dark is currently now Salem's). I wonder where the one for the God of Light is? Because that would be a very important place that's been lost. That and how the two gods are presented add to how different the two are, especially with how contorted the God of Dark's body was when he emerged from the pool. Another great thing is that even though the God of Dark did bring Ozma back when he shouldn't have, he also did not want to dishonour the agreement he had with his brother. It shows they aren't the cliche gods we see in other shows and media where they have a disagreement and fight until the others die, instead putting aside their own personal interests and focusing on balancing the world of light and dark. Salem being the one who caused the gods to leave and destroy the moon is a satisfying answer to what happened to the moon. Adding to that it was because of the exodus of the gods opposed to their destruction, it was another great subversion of a cliche story beat that so many have done in the past. Ozma's choice to go back is one originally driven by his on selfish desire and while he does end up back with Salem for a time, due to everything that had happened to her, there was no way it could last, especially since they both kept secrets from one another, especially Ozma's task from the gods. If he had been honest from the beginning, I have a feeling that things would've gone much differently. The four children of Salem and Ozma, I do believe they are the original maidens, whether they lived or died when Salem got mad at Ozma doesn't matter because, most likely as a side effect of being the children of a person who changes bodies every time they die, their powers transfer from host to host. Finally, the answer that Salem can't be killed must have been such a crushing blow to Ozma when he found out. However, knowing that it would be impossible to stop her and still getting people to fight against her, that makes me question whether he cares about anything anymore and is just sending people to their deaths because they have no idea what to do. As we see, Salem doesn't seem to be trying to gather the gods, it's not in her interests. At the end of the day, neither Salem or Ozpin are good people, especially with how much they've done in their own personal war against one another. The sooner they stop their fighting, the better the world will be. Neither of them can win because they are opposites that need to balance the world. Hopefully we get to see both the fountains appear in the series again, especially since they're nexuses of the light and dark of the world, not going to either of them at all would be a big surprise for me, especially since I feel that Ruby might end up captured by Salem's forces at some point if the title sequence is to be believed, meaning at least the pool of darkness could be seen again. Finally, the animation on this chapter is by far some of the best in the entire series, the smoke effects especially being used to transition scenes. They all deserve credit for what they've done in this chapter. #TheMoonDidNothingWrong

This episode alone has to be one of the biggest lore drops I’ve ever seen in an animated show, and it was amazing :).

Ozma is another callback to the naming theme in Season 1; Ozma was the queen of Oz before Ozpin came to Oz and became the Wizard. In this case, Salem is the Wicked Witch of the West as well as Ozpin being The Wizard of Oz.

Please theorize away, I love hearing the connections you make. Your really smart and one of the most empathetic people I have ever seen. You see and understand so much and it’s amazing to witness. I love your reactions and conclusions, you make the characters feel real, and that is an incredible thing (though to be fair crwby did an amazing job making them real too) but you definitely highlight and enhance their depth.

Your description of Salam isn't quite accurate. While she appears more dark, she is in fact a being of both light and darkness. Also, Salam didn't turn against humanity because Ozma turned against her, Ozma turned against her because she was turning against humanity. She literally talked about replacing humans.
