Made for a general audience Happy(early)77th Anniversary to this franchise, here’s a list of 9 “what if” questions that could’ve changed the series forever.
I really hope you all enjoy this video. Unfortunately tho, this is gonna be my last upload until at least June, May is gonna be a very eventful and busy month for me and I’m not gonna be able to have time to work on any videos. I do have some ideas for when I do return tho which I think y’all will like. That’s all for now-Sam🤙
Think about this as well. If Douglas never came to Sodor, Oliver either wouldn’t have escape entirely, or he would’ve been scrapped at Barrow assuming Donald didn’t find him instead
Or maybe Donald would refuse to leave Scotland without Douglas, and The Fat Controller would either have to buy both of them, or a completely different engine.
@@ConeHeadMan1 Percy definitely would be willing to save anyone since he and Thomas saved Old Slow Coach from scrap and he also saved James from the landslide in TOTB but James would be more concerned about saving himself over other engines from scrap any day unless he’d think he’d get praise and some reward for it by Sir Topham Hatt
@@jaanshersaeed4541 well, being brave isn't the only thing, theres -a close call with scrap, douglas was almost scrapped, this crosses of Thomas Possibly gordon James Percy Duck Donald -visibility, a bright color would give them away, or large shape in general, this crosses off Henry Gordon Edwards the only one left, and we can cross him off because he works from wellsworth to brendam, almost all the way across the island,
With the BR Standard one, I think one possiblity would be Thomas's branchline could become a small heritage railway after getting closed in the Beeching Acts. Have some of the NWR engines preserved, mostly the original 8, but some would likely still meet the torch once the diesels came.
Ffarquhare because it's Thomas's Branchline and it is preatty får away from the built up partis of sodor. Brendam & Peel Goodred would servive because of there industries. The Brendam Branch hase The Clay Pits & Brendam docks and Peel Goodred hase the Electric Power Plant & Aluminium works.
“are you a fat controllers’s engine…” “yes and proud of it..” “well I’m Oliver Isabell is the one behind me and the van is toad” “you’re being scraped aren’t you…” “yes…” Donald remembered what happened to his brother all those years ago “Driver couple me up to him“ “What are you doing…” “saving you.”
There needs to be someone to pull the Midnight Goods so yeah, he would've been saved regardless Still it would be interesting if Both never came to Sodor and someone like James saved him instead
I think a cool What if is what if the Arlesdale Railway wasn't built and the Mid Sodor was revived instead? According to the History of Sodors lecture the initial plan was to borrow a Skarloey Railway engine and have them run on the old rails of the Mid Sodor, but there were none to spare. So if they were able to do just that, we could've seen Peter Sam and Sir Handel retreading their old grounds, which would've been sweet. And Duke likely would've been found a little sooner.
I got three what if featuring Thomas. 1. What if Buffers stopped Thomas from crashing into the stationmaster's house? 2. What if Thomas never arrived at Sodor? 3. What if Thomas never went to the national railway show? (I just realized I've got all of the three eras of Sir Topham Hatt lol)
1) Thomas wouldn't get his new shape but nothing would really change except Daisy not being on Sodor. 2) Scrap, his class was terrible. 3) Nothing would really change, he'd just never meet Green Arrow and the other engines there.
1.Thomas would have remained in his old shape(as in the television series). 2. Edward... Edward... Would be the protagonist of tv series. And the show would be called Edward the litlle Blue tender engine and friends. 3Almost nothing would change.
In terms of Railway Preservation I'd argue nothing would change, Thomas would still be popular. However we may have gotten better stories or more Railways/Lines expanded on Sodor.
1. What if Awdry wrote Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure? 2. What if Salty, Emily, Spencer, Murdoch, Arthur, Fergus, Molly, Stanley and Lady appeared in the Railway Series? 3. What if Oliver did manage to escape to Sodor without Douglas?
Basically my plot line for my RWS is Douglas doesn’t escape gets sent to a scrapyard that’s on sodor and Edward on one of his scrap runs finds him in the back behind a lot of other stuff either trucks or just simply locomotive parts mentions it to Donald and Donald convinces fat hat to buy him that’s how I’ve wrote it
There's actually a fanfic with Premise no. 1 which ends with Donald discovering Douglas and Oliver on the run at Barrow several years later. (Although the idea of Douglas being preserved is also a good one. Maybe he ends up at Brechin rather than Aviemore, and maybe spends an extended period at Ropley?)
This is a great topic, Mattel should cancel All Engines Go entirely and replace it with a new series called "Sodor's What If?". That idea would be a million times better IMO.
2:06 That'd actually be an interesting way to rewrite Escape/Little Western, and to wrap up this supposed character arc. After saving Oliver, Donald can feel he avenged Douglas in a way by rescuing another.
Wouldn't have happened. Douglas took the Scrap train because Donald takes Heavy Goods as he was bought to do not to mention D199's train earlier that day. Oliver would have been caught in that timeline unfortunately.
@@everythingproductions2004 But by that time Diesels were the option so a Diesel would have taken it and Oliver wouldn't have risked calling out. He just wouldn't have known.
Well, what if he STAYED in the tunnel? I mean, it’s a common misconception among people who don’t watch Thomas, so, the possibility of it being true would be something to imagine.
@@Airenapsk I think then instead of percy in knapford would immediately come Duck. And instead of Percy, someone would come to help build the harbor. And instead of Percy, someone else would come to Thomas' branch. And there would be no tale of the brave.
An interesting idea. I like it. In fact, I think I might have a few suggestions. What if Diesel never came to Sodor? Perhaps a more friendly diesel could have been purchased by the Fat Controller for a trial. Like Paxton, or Sidney. What if we actually got Barry the Rescue Engine? Endless possibilities there. What if Emily was a Sodor & Mainland Engine? This is an idea I've heard multiple times over the years. Oh, here's a thought. What if the NWR was run by someone else? What if the Fat Controller and his forefathers never stuck around after Sir Topham Hatt I? That's a bit of food for thought.
Here’s an interesting one: what if Bertram never met William Stanier? Henry might’ve been scrapped due to no financial backing from William & the 1925 agreement with the LMS might not’ve happened, because again, Stanier & Hatt were close friends. The latter might’ve still happened, but it still leaves you to wonder
What if STH knew Donald had a twin he was close to when he was buying him (ie, their old manager was trying to sell them together), but denied him knowing he would be scrapped? And then pretended at ignorance upon meeting them to save face. I have a Donald without Douglas headcanon about this where Donald suspects it and resents/silently hates him for it. Okay, okay, this is more my headcanon than a what if, but hey.
I loved this, one idea I had was what if Thomas was a J70 (AKA what was originally intended) i think that could have some very fun implications on the stories.
Unfortunately that idea is popular in the Fandom. Most likely, Thomas wouldn't change that much, just a different design and lb&scr e2s would be near forgotten.
@@redboxgamingyt3452 Well, I think then the great Western branch would either not have existed or it would have been serviced by someone else. And there wouldn't be characters like Phillip, Dennis, and Billy.
Plus i think fore my ideas a sodor would be preaty diffrent. If James was always black not red then i think he would not be as vain and full of himself, instead he would be more down to earth and focused on hard instead of his paint.
And for my second theory if Paxton came to Sodor instaed of Diesel nit only would the events of 'Duck & the Dieasel Engines' be very diffrent but i also think that with Paxton's easy to like persinality the steam engines would be mutch more exepting of dieasel engines.
The legacy would end there and would most likely lead into Beeching taking over and enforcing BR standards meaning a lot of engines would be scrapped and a lot of lines would be closed.
For the part about sodor actually being forced from BR to be standardize, this would mean a lot of engines being reallocated like Thomas would probably go to Southampton docks with the rest of his siblings. But this would also mean other things like more characters appearing like standard designs such as Arthur and Murdoch having an excuse of appearing in the rws and characters leaving with old engines like Toby and Edward being withdrawn since both furness k2 and j70 trams should have been withdrawn years ago before BR even took over
The scrapping was caused by Phillp Shirley and Ernest Marples, not Beeching, Beeching attended the opening of the Bluebell and South Devon railways, he gave railway preservation his blessing, he also ensured Fenchurch was kept in storage after withdrawal until the Bluebell could afford it (Beeching lived in East Grinstead)
@@ciarangleeson2880 Yes, that is correct. The 'mean' blue engines. And the other red engine I mean the bigger one of James and seems to be an A2 Pacific. As I know that the James looking one has the fan term of Eagle, and why it is named after a bird and not a human name, I have no clue.
I like to think that if the northwestern was forced to follow BR principles, The fat controller would still try and find a way to preserve his engines in someway shape or form. For one depending on when the Story Takes Pl., Stepney has already stated (likely with the approval of his manager since he was on the railway to at that time) but they’re all welcome on the Bluebell Railway. Now obviously they can’t take everyone but I imagine that would save a fair amount of the engines. On top of that due to the Engines relative popularity in the railway series I’m sure multiple railway museums would be lining up to purchase a member of the fat controller’s eight famous engines. And I know this happens far later in the books but Thomas did become an honorary member of the great railway museum so I see no reason he couldn’t join that. Maybe Gordon would be sold to the Flying Scotsman’s Owner?
It does make me wonder though why didn't the NWR have to follow the BR standard, was the railway series that popular that if BR changed anything I'd be controversial, or was the NWR inconsequential to BR's grand plan
Railway Series would be different in a lot of ways. Possibility the biggest difference would be that the Railway Series would most likely be focused on Larger/Tender Engines and the Small Engines would pretty much be nothing more than just background characters.
Hey I just watched the whole video and this is a great idea if you make this a series this would be so fun to watch I also like your editing style for this video it feels very relaxing and that’s awesome. Great job and I am excited for when you decide to upload again
If i had reality warping powers; I'd make What If? scenarios like this a reality via videos on RU-vid. Same with a bunch of other speculative, along with lost, media. I'm the curious type so i'd love to see these ideas realised.
I like some of these what if, I thought the skarloey railway and Thomas not getting his branchline was pretty interesting as well as Donald and Douglas not being together Here’s my what on about Toby he’d be turned into a brakevan
Here's an idea: What if Thomas was instead an LNER J50 as Awdry actually wanted him to be, either as first illustrated or rebuilt into the useful engine we know and love him as of today?
I've noticed on the original Awdry map and various edits of said map by fans that there is an abandoned railway at the northern most end of Sodor that once ran from Harwick, past some smaller towns and eventually to a mine. My question is why the NWR hasn't expanded out that way and use most of the old ROW and what's the story with that abandoned line?
My RWS Harwick Branch. Arlesburgh West x Harbour, bridge over river Arle, past Castle Arle, Engine sheds & goods yard. Past a lighthouse, thrue a rocky terrain into Clagh Oorye station. Past the north coast of sodor $ Lifeboat station into Harwick station. Plus a extention and loop at Ballaswein.
I have a what if. The engien were biuld by the Railway him self. Whould all arrivel in the 1940s and preserve the S&MR. The W&SR And the TKER. To be more clear, the Tidmouth Knaford Elsbrigh railway
@@theflyingkipper42 Then duck would be the engine on trial instead of diesel and (assuming ducks character traits don't change) he would be bought. Also what diesel class. I'm assuming an 08
