My old man loved this song. He banged this song out across lake Tawarewa New Zealand with his sanyo cassette radio in his Hamilton jet 83 in the 90s Trout fishing openings. As much as he trashed it , I still dig it.
First digital recording in pop music and still one of the best. This is from Bop Til You Drop, and there are no weak songs on it. The combination of Ry Cooder and David Lindley on guitars is breathtaking. Chaka Khan does the vocal lead on "Don'tcha Mess Up a Good Thing". The last song, "I Can't Win" has the best vocal harmonies I've ever heard. I've worn out numerous vinyl copies of this LP and still listen to it often. A complete masterpiece.
I was fortunate enough to see Ry and David Lindley in concert at the Auckland Town Hall,NZ,back in the 80's.Just the two of them,no backup band.Great concert.
I'm turning green with envy that you saw Cooder and Lindley together sans back-up! Saw David 3 or 4 times back in the day when he toured w/Jackson Browne, and I still own vinyl of Kaleidescope, one of David's early groups. I've never seen Ry live, but have been a fan since I noticed him on Captain Beefheart's "Safe As Milk" LP waayyy back.
@@williamgreenfield9991 I must confess I didn't know who David Lindley was! I believe,if my memory serves me well,they were on tour across the ditch in Australia and came across on short notice,hence no band...a delight and a pleasure,as you say,to have seen them together.
From 1:58 to 2:34 is as perfect and crystalline an acoustic guitar solo as I can imagine. Concise, salient, technical perfection. Ry does in 36 seconds what some players never achieve in 70 years ... Django worthy!
Great song , so funky and Reggaeish ( is that a word ? ) . Great guitar and backing vocals . I saw a South Pacific island vocal trio do this once on a TV talent show . Arcapella . No guitars . They were great .

back up singer Terry and Bobbie were in the coaster also who are the back up singers here and way back i was with the drummer so i got to hear the rehearsals and it was so great, i remember one time i brought a big lunch of kentucky chicken for us all
Terry and Bobby did a couple great records and tours post Ry Cooder with Hans Theessink, too. The one I remember seeing live, they had a tuba instead of a bass, which somehow fit into the R&B groove just great.
Both are good recordings. Like many well written songs, this one lends itself to different interpretations. Time and musical styles changed, but Ry Cooder made something new (and great) out of something that Elvis had nailed down many years earlier.
What mean jam remember this growing up in Reseda back in the valley days late 70s!!! Reminds me of my mom who left the radio on in the kitchen on Sundays lol
Still brilliant.live a couple of times in london. His vocals work their heart out. During the course of his concerts they each get their moments of glory without him impinging on their performance.
