I just came home tonight a little bit drunk and this concert was incredible.... Ry Cooder has a special talent. There is nothing musically more relevant and connected and important than culturely connected music.
Beautiful . I love Ry's story telling about Dodgers stadium ,heart breaking . True. 🌱🌻 incidentally a mate of mine ,Lazy John whom played slide when Ry visited Brisbane Oz passed away last year . Ry invited local street players including lazy John. Ry must be one of the most compassionate musicians around!!!
@@jackwoods535 I'm not American, but yeh, I used to be left wing and liberal... But my eyes have been opened and I see the damage they have done. The liberals and especially the woke movement were funded by the Russians in the west to destabilise society by creating division... Keep fighting for your liberty and personal freedom.
Back in the late 80`s Flaco was touring with his band and played in my home town,i went up to see them and he,Flaco, was in the pub enjoying a drink next day he was in my own pub together with his band.Great memories.
I saw Ry Cooder early 80’s in Birmingham UK with Flaco for his Get Rhythm tour then Flaco solo in a pub in Kings Norton Birmingham, The Breedon Bar not long after . A great night and he passed the Tequila around

Somebodies got the cow head in the ground and the cabretto on the pit smoking over mesquite, delicious! Thank You biamaku for posting solid Gold/Darrell Dust{Peace}
Back when ACL was really good. I was living in Austin then , remember the Split Rail, Soap Creek Saloon, Broken Spoke , AWH, Kicker Jims , The Skyline ,Taco Flats and eating chicken fried steak at The Stallion.....great times .
***** I know, I am 57 and I haven't either! But, soon, very soon, I will finally have that pleasure and I am so excited. Seeing Cooder, White, Skaggs at the Tennessee Theater!
I'm a couple of years older and I've always made a point to see Ry whenever he's come East (mainly NYC/NJ). From the Bottom Line show in '74, to the couple of shows he did in small theaters (Richardson Hall) at Princeton U - with Flaco and the Pahinui (sp) Bros (think Chicken Skin Music) and which this video is all about (minus the Hawaiaans). There was the 'Jazz' show at Carnegie where he highlighted Bix, Jelly Roll, and which had an amazing duet with a guy from the Golden Gate Quartet who did a sand dance with Ry playing solo. The intro of John Hiatt (after he got out of jail) at the Ritz in NYC. Buena Vista (also at Carnegie) was amazing (though Ry was content to play in the background most of the night). A cancelled show in NYC (Summerstage/Central Park) which Ali Farka couldn't attend because of civil strife in his native Mali. That was a tough cancel. Though we did a bag of mushrooms, had no interest in seeing James Blood Ulmer, and just bar hopped, giggling on the upper West Side. Which brings me to my last show with Ry and Ricky Skaggs and the White Family down in Ardmore PA. Had 2nd row seats for that one. Now? Waiting for my next Cooder adventure. See, you only go round the track once in this life. Plain and simply, you don't miss these things.
I saw Ry and his 8 man ensemble at the Roxy, back to back nights in 1977. @biamaku I've really enjoyed your (extensive and rare) collection of Ry Cooder. Thanks for your dedicated work.
This is the best of several vids I have seen. I am not a trained nor an untrained professional musician, but this I can say. IMO, this arrangement and performance transforms the song from an American C&W hit into music that can grab and hold a much larger bunch of humanity. Ry and the accordion dude (May peace be upon him) took care to give each other space to say what they had to say, and produced something that has grown in my heart since 1976.
Peter Doremus The “accordion dude,” Flaco Jimenez, is a long time collaborator of Ry’s. Since the ‘70s. FYI Flaco is still alive, and did a duet with Ry at the Americana Festival in Nashville.
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful show! I've only come upon Flaco recently (through another Ry Cooder clip) and so really appreciate this one! They were all so young!
No offense meant to Ry Cooder. I do use Cod Liver oil as a regular supplement and it seems it was a case of confirmation bias which made me read his name the way I did. Sorry!
To the fool that titled this Ry Cooder Live from Austin ‘75. Maybe get your crap together and give proper credit to Flaco Jimenez & his band. Cooder was just background filler/accompanying the band.
Here we go..Ry Cooder with his slider and guitar on stage performing and entertaining with all he's got in him..has to control his woman somehow, got it..yes,or no..ohhh,great band of musicians on stage and rhythem and melody is pouring out all over the stage to the fans..sound is fantastic..
I am far, far from an expert on Conjunto, or any genre Mexican music, but even to my untrained ear, Flaco is just amazing. And I've always found it interesting how Ry finds his way to be part of a band, not just a solo act. He just fits in, doesn't need to dominate. Back around the time he did the "A Meeting by the River" with V. M. Bhatt album, I think it was on an NPR interview, maybe not, he just tries to find a place to fit in, regardless of the genre.
From what I have read, Ry played with Beefheart for a very short time and did NOT enjoy it by any means. Ry played on Little Feat's self-titled first album, released in 1970.
I feel the same way. When playing with another artist, Ry respects the music, finds a way to complement, and avoids the limelight. Sometimes it’s hard to identify his parts.
1975 We were so much older then. We're younger than that now. To paraphrase Bob Dylan. Like Cheryl said, Good stuff folks, good stuff. Quality always shines through. Some of the recognized best at their craft. And how about those leisure suits.
Where Chris? I wonder how many members of family and friends were at this legendary show…❤ I remember when Flacos music first struck me in the heart. La Zona Rosa, ATX Just wish I remembered if it was Christmas or New Years. Coulda been Christmas and we partied till New Years😎 Legends!
Reminds me of being at the San Jose Flea Market. Only thing missing is the smell of Mexican food and of course the ever persistent smell of garbage warmed by the Sun.
some years ago i bought a double album set of bob dylan, took it home and listened and said "damn this guy can't sing" the next day i listened again and said "damn this guy can't sing" on the third day i listened again and realized why i liked it. its the words and the passion of the person singing them. i hear new artists, and they sing very well, but their words are meaningless, unimportant and painful for me to hear
ALL AMERICAN PATRIOTS!!!! I HAVE SURFING MEXICO SINCE 1964........MUCHO SPECIAL PLACE!!! AMERICA BEST ALLIE IS MEXICO......CON MUCHO GUSTO....PINCHE TOMAS........LOVES MEXICO......BLESSINGS.......NO CCP....CCP........MEXICO VIVA!!!!!
In 1976, Flaco Jimenez first appeared on Austin City Limits during Season 1, with Ry Cooder; He became the first Spanish performer to appear on Austin City Limits, and appeared on the show several times. Future ACL producer (now executive producer) Terry Lickona is in the audience, he did not join Austin City Limits until Season 4 in 1979.🙂
