Apologies for referring to Dundee United as Dundee several times, a silly mistake I won't be making again. Hope it doesn't ruin your enjoyment of the video too much!
@@jnwallace2000 I know the difference. Just when I was researching/writing I wrote it down as Dundee, then read it that way when recording. It just slipped through the net pal. What we call an honest mistake.
@@flashbackfootball1367 its odd for someone who is Scottish and has a youtube channel about football to do that, and not only that you called them Dundee United at times too utterly bizarre.
That United team that had Gauld, Andy Robertson, Gary Mackay-Steven, Stuart Armstrong and Nadir Cifti was such an absolute pleasure to watch. As entertaining as Bannon, Milne, Sturrock, Narey, Dodds etc etc.
He's not arguably the Whitecaps best player, he's by far their best player. I've went to see the Whitecaps quite a few times and he's always head and shoulders above any player on the pitch. Genuine class and hardworking. Far too good for the MLS . He'd be one of Scotland's best players and only genuine playmaker (I'm Scottish). I hope we get to see him play for the tartan army soon, as it'd be a huge waste if not.
Wow , what a story. Souinds like he really doesn't like intrusive pressure and is happy earning good money enjoying his football. You can see that as a mental weakness or a kid who just knows what he wants out of life. Good luck anyway! : )
As a Sporting supporter is great to see he was able to turn things around. He came with such high hopes and was sad to see him not living up to its potential in the club.
Whitecaps fan here: he plays well, is the interim captain, and easily our star player. Even if he doesn’t get football recognition because he plays in the MLS, he’s getting paid good money, so to him, I am sure coming to Vancouver is a correct career move for him.
What's it got to do with being a Celtic fan? You might as well say "as a fan of cheese and pickle sandwiches" Your affiliation has nothing to do with him.
Its a cry shame for him, i do wish he stay at united one more year then consider moving on. Also thanks for tell me where he is now i do wish the lad all the best and to a certain Mr clarke...now might be a good a timme as any with the euros next summer
He should be in every Scotland squad. I watch his Vancouver games and he creates so much, takes wonderful corners and scorres a lot of goals. Billiy Gilmour recently scored for us, but I was surprised that was his first senior goal in all matches. Gauld should at least be in the squads..
One is playing in the best, hardest most competitive league in the world with incredibly high standards. The other is playing in a Mickey Mouse league. Please use your noggin.
Gilmour is a DLP and Scotland's attacking midfielders (McGinn and McTominay) have recently been among the highest scoring in all international football. They also don't play in a subpar league.
Gilmour, hickey and Ben doak all have the potential to be world class players but they need to be developed and nourished so they can fulfil their full potential
Gilmour is overrated sorry mate. Hickey on the other hand, good player and doak could become phenomenal. Though as an Englishman I can only pray he doesn't can't have you lot having a golden generation.
Calvin Ramsey looks a good prospect and Lewis ferguson is doing really well in serial A with bologna, he could potentially earn a big money move to one of the top Italian clubs
I’m a Dundee United fan and was 12/13 when he was playing for us. Every time I was at a game, he was simply mesmerising. Unbelievable talent and I respect his decisions to stay out the limelight and just enjoy his football
Great stuff man, as a relatively recent dundee united fan i’ve been loving the scottish football videos recently, it helps me learn more about players i might otherwise never know
This video sums up everything wrong with football and scottish football in general. What a team United had in those days, all those emerging stars. Celtic just marched on in and ripped the guts out of it. Nobody can compete. Waste of time.
Good vid man Glasgow rangers fan here he definitely hasn't had a awful career but calling him mini messi was always gonna effect him one way or another
Why the hell are you interchanging Dundee, and Dundee United? Not only two separate clubs entirely, but also rivals. You sound Scottish so you surely know the difference?
Very surprised he does not play for the national team. One of their best technical players and has played at levels higher than the scottish prem and championship unlike some of their players.
Better if the narrator got the team right. Dundee UNITED. Not Dundee - Dundee Hearts or any other club mentioned. In saying that he was superb to watch week in, week out.
I didn't call them Dundee Hearts, I said Dundee hearts were broken. But you're quite right about calling them Dundee United, I'll not make that mistake again. Thanks for watching.
Gauld’s is a great story and shows how if you want to make it to the top you have got to be resilient. Being hyped up at an early age could easily of gone to Ryan’s head which could of crushed him when he got released by Sporting but instead he got his head down and was humble enough to go down a level so he could show what he is about. It just goes to show the mental side of the game is just as significant as technique and physical prowess.
We won't pick someone born in Scotland but will consider 2 players from Newcastle. Clarke says its up to Anderson and Barnes. If they do choose Scotland it will be more likely because they know they aren't going to be choosing by England or get that much game time.
I'm obviously biased as an American and MLS supporter.. but I do have to say one of the best things about "soccer" here in the US is that we don't mind older players if they are performing. At 27, 28.. Gauld would probably be completely left behind by most European clubs as those older signings are exceptions, not the standard. They likely consider his prime right now, or even a few years back, rather than potentially ahead of him. Old Firm wanted him at 25, would they still want him, objectively a better player, at 30? South Americans and Europeans who get dropped by their academies or don't quite develop quick enough get another chance here in the US to play for longer and develop as some are just late bloomers. Take Jack Harrison for example. Now at Everton, could have very well stopped playing altogether when he got dropped by the Man U academy. Hell MLS all time leading goalscorer Chris Wondolowski didn't get to the 'Quakes until he was 26, where he then went on to score 167 goals and retire a USMNT player, well paid, respected, veteran at the age of 38.
It's genuinely baffling why he doesn't get near a Scotland squad. Steve Clarke has done an amazing job and you have to trust his judgement - even if it seems odd to leave Gauld out completely. I have to assume that there is more to the story than just him not being rated as a player.
I remember the hype all the way down in Wales, so much so that I signed him on football career modes on footy games I used to play and he became an elite player but real life football is hard to measure in terms of what players will make it at elite clubs. I'm glad he's playing well and enjoying his football and would like to see Clarke call him up even if it's a friendly just to give him a chance to represent his country but like you say players of smaller stature who through no fault of their own got hyped way too much too soon have to work a lot harder than players who offer more physically
I really feel for guys like this, because he just reacted the way any normal person would in that situation. There's a reason all the greats are either thick as pig s**t or borderline sociopaths off the pitch. It's the only way a human could cope with it all.
i mean ever since he has come to my team (the whitecaps) we have become a much stronger team. hes a fantastic and unbelievably underrated player who brings so much heart to our team. crazy that he still doesn't get called up to the national team. hope he ends up playing for Canada one day, osorio replacement!
He’s in the right place for himself career wise. Plays every week and they love him. Also on a monster of a wage that will see him good after his playing days are done
I wish for you to get 100k plus subs you bloody deserve it with such good quality content you make it's mostly Scottish but thats fine with with me also could you potentially do one about arda güler there's much informational videos about how he came to be
Just shows that you have to an iron will, a coach who has an interest and being spot on with every transfer just to have a slither of a chance to make it.
'Caps fan here. Gauld revolutionised our entire team. He's one of the reasons we're second in the Western Conference of MLS. They're actually trying to make him a Canadian citizen, but unfortunately he won't be able to be so in time for the World Cup.
Ryan Gauld left Dundee United to go and play in the Portuguese League, he played for quite a few clubs on the continent before returning to Scotland for a short spell at Hibernian. I gather there were rumours at one point that Rangers were weighing up a move for the gifted midfielder. Not really sure if it was Gerrard or Van Bronckhorst who fancied the look of him but unfortunately it never really came to anything. Vancouver Whitecaps are of course no strangers to Scottish football players with Kenny Miller having played for the Western Canada giants.
Compared to other “Messi clones” like Hachim Mastour, Freddy Adu, and Alen Halilovic, Gauld has had a pretty solid career and is currently one of the best players in MLS. He’s been a continual starter and top player for pretty much every team he’s played for so far.
@@flyingaviator8158 Interesting thing is that, for example, in Football Manager 2005. Freddy Adu and Bojan Krkic were the best talents in the game. And Messi was awful. He he was still not considered a wonderkid. Even he was older than both Adu and Krkic
there was rumours that the other big 3 were interested in him just before he moved to canada... was really hoping to stick in portugal with either porto or benfica... he is also surprisingly fluent in portuguese !
Definitely good enough to make the bench for Scotland. Hard to make the lad come all the way over for friendlies though. He wasn’t at his best for Hibs but glad to see him doing well in the States.
@@shaunnichols1743 you realise the Whitecaps participate in the MLS, which while is technically a league consisting of both Canadian and US American football clubs, is known for being the USA football league.
Yeah I know, but its a pain in the arse to say Dundee United every time. But you're right, next time I'll not be lazy and either call them Dundee United or just United.
@@flashbackfootball1367 I think people are justly calling you out on lazy journalism. It's a fair comment. It's like saying that Marcus Rashford plays for Manchester City.
Despite the fact that Gauld's career in Sporting didn't pan out in the way that it should've of, he would go on to prove his worth in Farense. He suffered relegation with them in the same season that we ended our 19 year league title drought but Gauld was truly exceptional in Algarve and it's just a damn shame that his time there just happened to be at a club that played better than what their results would suggest (Most teams in Liga Nos were only able to beat Farense by the skin of their teeth). I feel like Jorge Jesus' time at the club was the main contributing factor to him leaving the club as opposed to his lack of first team opportunities since he's always been a manager that prioritizes established players over young talents so that didn't help matters. A lot of young talented players during Jesus' time at the club were frequently loaned out to other clubs in the league (Palhinha, Podence and Francisco Geraldes, etc) so it was no wonder that Gauld would eventually see himself enter "loan hell" until he left. Gauld leaving Britian to escape the toxic tabloid culture should've helped him focus on his game more but unfortunately Portugal is a country that also has a tabloid culture that overinflates the value of youngsters and heavily scrutinizes them if they don't perform to standard (especially if you're a Sporting, Benfica or Porto player). Ryan Gauld is a great "what-if" story because ultimately it was a mixture of poor man-management, unfortunate timing and bad luck that caused him to not reach the potential that he had
One of the biggest talents I have seen to fail miserably and destroy their career was undoubtedly Anas Sharbini. Many players, and coaches also dubbed him as the next big thing while in Ryan's age up to until when he was 22 - 23. The dude had the potential to be next Zvonimir Boban, and in the Modric's potential range, and now he is playing in the fifth Croatian league. Anyone who played football manager 2007 - 2010 will probably remember him as a beast. And, btw....the reason why Halilovic's career went downhill was his father. You can research that story if you wish so.
Could have been a top top player but left Dundee utd a season or 2 too early, still ended up a good player with a few good years still left in him but I thought he would have played at the very very top with a Liverpool, an arsenal or a big euro team. Would love to see him capped though as he's good enough and deserves that recognition.
I remember the hype around him when he arrived here. Too much pressure on him for no reason, he was/is an average player and way too skinny and weak, his biggest handicap. But I wish him the best, he seems a humble and good guy and i'm happy he maanaged to put his carreer back on tracks.
Genuinely surprised Scotland havent capped him. Its not like theyre bursting with superstars. If Billy Gilmour get games so why cant Gauld? Its weird. Reminds me a bit of Wes Hoolahan for Ireland. It tooks ages for us to cap him even tho lots of Irish football fans knew he was a classy footballer. However due to his strange career path, height and style a lot of international managers wouldnt risk playin him in games, or even call him up to squads.. I dont get that mentality. Especially as we were average anyway so whats the harm in calling him up? Whats the risk? Scotland should play Gauld. Give him a chance to show what he can do.
At that time Sporting CP was really in a bad spot and we went through variouse managers that didnt really understood how to the use the academy players, but if Ryan Gauld was able to play for sporting again I have no doubt in my mind with the help of Ruben Amorim I think he would be great a player in our line up
The video doesn't give Ryan Gauld enough credit for his play for the Whitecaps, as he has been one of the best players in the MLS, not just the Caps. More than a few pundits voiced their displeasure when he wasn't a finalist for league MVP this year. Not sure how serious this is, but there's been some chatter about Gauld getting Canadian citizenship so he can join the Canadian national team. While the video highlights his abilities with the ball at his feet, his greatest attribute could be his work rate. He's tireless in the press with his strike partner, Brian White, and he willingly tracks back to help the midfield and back line.
Would love to see him in the Scotland squad I don’t think Steve Clark has forgotten about him I think it’s just now there is too much competition in our squad for that attacking midfield position, I’m pretty sure if he was an out rite no9 or no11 he had no problem getting in
Think mls defences are the issue for Clark. Pretty weak so the change in level to international is huge. He's talented enough but not getting tested enough in mls imo
Never heard of this kid....I'm enjoying this video (half way through) and wondering whats gonna happen to him (Edit) looks like that move to portugal was a disaster...went from first team in Scotland to development football..shame...but glad to see he's back happy and playing in Canada
I cannot understand why Gauld has not been chosen to play for Scotland. He is simply brilliant - but unfortunately sometimes even the brilliant can be overlooked.
Wow , what a story. Souinds like he really doesn't like intrusive pressure and is happy earning good money enjoying his football. You can see that as a mental weakness or a kid who just knows what he wants out of life. Good luck anyway! : )
Bruno Cheyrou was the new "Zidane". Probably better than his time at Liverpool ever demonstrated, but another of those players whose closest connection to the person they're meant to emulate is their hairline.
Be a naturalised Canadian in about a year I think. Hopefully, the Canadians wont be as stupid as us and get him capped. Should be getting a shot on the international stage.
Putting that tag of The Scottish Messi wasnt the best way to start his career. He was unbelievable but that pressure can kill a guys career before its had time to begin. He was s decent player but overhyped like That kid From.Ranhers who was dubbed the Scottish Rooney Sheffield utd he ended up playing for Cant remember his name but you see where this is going. Neil McCann the poor mans Ryan Giggs 😂
Once he said Zidane the greatest of all time, i'm out. There will only ever be one Pele, he did everything on the ball Messi does 40-50yrs previous and not on lush carpeted pitches, lighter balls, better slippered boots and the list is endless. Zidane?. PFFTttttttttt.
Interesting thing is that in Football Manager 2005 ( at least no-patched version); Freddy Adu and Bojan Krkic were the best talents in the game. And Messi was awful. He he was still not considered a wonderkid. Even he was older than both Adu and Krkic, 2 and 3 years respectively
Jorge Jesus os notorious here in Portugal for not giving youngster chances. In Benfica he wouldn't even play Bernardo Silva after he was the top scorer in Benfica B he was a joke. Cancelo would barely get a minute either
