How can two guys on the same bike & same program have such different results? Aldon Baker had that scenario when he was responsible for training both Jake Weimer and Ryan Villopoto.
Aldon Baker opens up about his former athlete Adam Cianciarulo in this unreleased interview with Gypsy Tales from 2014.

I’ve been watching the GYPSY Tales clips on RU-vid for a few months now. I don’t know this guys name or his background but he does some of the best interviews in the business and asks without a doubt some of the best questions.... questions that I want to know myself. He asks questions that humanizes the riders. I feel like I know the person, not the rider, after his interviews. Nice job mate.

I think that it's a matter of the same program is not going to work for everyone. JS7 is a perfect example of that.

It's always difficult to compare two different riders, as they've had a life of different experiences, different genetics, etc. What's perhaps a more important question is whether Jake Weimer's results/lap times improved after training with Aldon Baker. It's better to measure one's performance against their self than it is a completely different rider.
@KG-yc6cl
@KG-yc6cl 3 года назад
I disagree. Racing is inherently a comparison of a rider vs other riders. That's the definition and purpose. I agree with you in life but they're talking about racing and racing results. The only thing that matters is how you do vs others.
@MikeKGullion
@MikeKGullion 3 года назад
@@KG-yc6cl I didn't intend to use "comparison" in that context, as racing, along with every other sport, is no doubt a comparison. However, I can see how my comment was vague. The host asked Aldon Baker that when all things are equal, such as the training program and the bike, why does one rider excel more than another? Is it their mind? Is it genes? My point is that it's difficult, if not impossible, to compare riders in that regard, as there's just too many factors that come into play, whether on a biological or environmental level. For example, hypothesizing about the genetics, synaptic connections, diet during childhood development, environmental surroundings, life experiences, parental upbringing, etc. of two different riders in an attempt to explain why one is faster than the other is scientifically impossible. Such questions are beyond our current understanding, merely because they're too complicated. Sure, we could hypothesize whether the nutrients in the amniotic fluid during embryonic development was better for Ryan Villopoto's synaptogenesis as compared to Jake Weimer's. However, no one will ever know, as there's no evidence to analyze. Therefore, such hypothesizing doesn't hold any explanatory value. Only things that we can gather evidence on holds explanatory value, such as how young a rider started racing, for example, instead of wondering about their connectome. Similarly, asking why one rider responds better to Aldon's training program than another rider is also the wrong question to ask, in my opinion. After gathering what little molecular data one can get, such as through blood tests, as well as other physiological data, then training programs have to be customized to each individual rider. Just using one training program template for every single rider will not yield the best overall results, collectively speaking. In that regard, comparing why one rider responds better to one specific training program is not only difficult/impossible to answer, but the wrong question to begin with since it should be about individual customization. One revolution in sports physiology over the last 25 years is the customization of a training program to a specific athlete based on their physiological data.

@@KG-yc6cl I understand where you're coming from but Mike is correct also. These two guys may have almost the same exact equipment and training program but they are still two different people with different physical capabilities. I would say Aldon's program is still successful if Jakes own lap times improved after training with him for a period of time. You see what I'm saying? Jake and RV are two completely different people with different levels of ability, confidence, competitiveness, and so on. Racing is an individual sport, therefore if Weimer was faster after running his program than he was before then it was successful.

Villopoto had the mindset of a winner. Every. Single. Race. Same reason why Dungey was dominant and you see riders like Cooper Webb starting to fit that role right now. Cooper and Marv are in the same situation. Marv will actually do better then Cooper most of the time during training and riding with Aldon.. But Cooper is just a determined winner when it comes to race night.

I think part of the winning combination is that mental toughness and the ability to believe in yourself and have confidence. If throughout life you have not only had confidence in yourself but have a circle of family and friends who strengthen that confidence by providing constant positive feedback and encouragement. If you are never told you are good or worse , been told you stink...it takes a lot more inner strength to get beyond it. If you absolutely are sure you can hit that quad...chances are you will....however if there is doubt....and you focus too much on that doubt...one you never try the quad or worse.. you crash hard. @shooter7a
@shooter7a 3 года назад
Yeah...because it is a moronic question. RV was faster...because...HE COULD GO FASTER and not crash. As much as Aldon wants to think it is fitness...there is no way having the best trainer will matter if you are a slow rider! I guarantee if you take all the "C" riders in the US...and find the one who is the BEST pure athlete....he is likely as good or better a pure athlete that the fastest pros (Tomac, etc). But just being a pure athlete does not make you a fast rider. SKILLS!

I think RV could just ride on the edge better. He was constantly about to loose it, but he could hold it together.
@shooter7a
@shooter7a 3 года назад
EXACTLY. Physical ability does not matter over the course of one lap (pure speed). Anyone with the skills can put down one fast lap..especially in SX. If it were a matter of RV just being a better athlete, then you would have seen Jake qualifying close to him...but getting waxed over longer sessions like in the race. But Jake was just not nearly as fast. His qual times and fast laps were way off RV. Look at Jakes best year...2012 in SX. Look at his qual and fast lap times vs RV. RV was 0.5 to 2.0 s faster at best. He was just FASTER. And it was not because he was a "better athlete"

Coop hasn't had 2 shoulder recos because he understands his not a great rider when it comes to the whoops so he doesn't over ride then. Adam however.......he has had a while career of being told he is the messiah and unfortunately over rides the bike to stay with the competition. Unfortunately for Adam is that being tall hasn't helped him in the whoops, unlike what everyone has told him.

To me as a red head and growing up with red hair, you're constantly facing adversity, always being shit on and picked on and we red heads don't just allow ourselves to be beat down and give up, if we get beat down we get back up screaming and fighting and clawing are way back to our feet, all the bullshit we deal with growing up shapes us in to fighters. 2 of the best MX riders to ever grace this sport are redheads, RV and RC that is no accident

Johnny O'Mara and I were classmates from elementary school to high school. Through Years of BMX and Moto what I witnessed with Johnny;. 1. He had a rare level of skill on the bike. He could make the bike dance and do stuff most people could not do. Jake cannot do what Ryan villopoto can do on a motorcycle. 2. O'Mara had a fire off the bike and on the bike. Ryan Villopoto has what Johnny has; Elite skills on the bike and fire inside the rider - Jake is mediocre compared to Ryan on and off the bike.

Uh.....SKILLS! RV had better skills. He had a better feel for the limit of the tires. He could go around corners faster. Better throttle control. Better bike control. Look...Stew was not a very good athlete at all. His physio test numbers were MEDIOCRE. He was not a great athlete. His skills were off the charts. He had a way to ride the bike that did not require the same level of exertion as say RC...who was a bulldog. So this whole question putting it down to just physical ability difference between RV and Jake is stupid. RV was a better RIDER. Stupid line of questioning.
