I'm 54 years old and I remember Rye Playland being one of my family's summer outings. Every year, because I was still too little, I had to stand and wait while my mom and older aunties would ride on this particular ride!! But once I got older, we stopped going. Now I live in Georgia. Well I say I should put this on my bucket list! 🤔🤔😆
It may not look like much but this ride is the absolute best! I love to put my feet up on the highest peg and slap the behind of my horse and pretend I'm in the Belmont stakes.🤗 Been riding the Derby since the 80s.
I remember going on this ride last year and thinking it was just a regular merry go round type thing... I was wrong and it was so fast when I got off I couldn’t stand up lmao
Thank you so much for posting this!! This is an incredible memory from my childhood in the 50's..... I loved this ride!!!! I'm so glad to see that it is still there going strong... I did learn that there are only 2 others like it In the world....
MY absolute favorite in the whole park i was there today the horses still race i rode this about 15 times today and a few times the horses race and sometimes they dont. Regardless even if they dont race still a classic long live the derby racer.
I was fortunate enough to ride this a few years ago. I decided to ride the outside horse and wow, as you can see you have to hang on tight and lean in!
When we were kids my female cousin threw up all over the place on this and man did we laugh our guts out at her.She was filling her face all afternoon with food and cokes and we hit the jackpot when we got her on this ride
I remember this being super fast, and the horses not only went up and down but back and forth. I noticed They stopped the back and forth movement. It's the best carousel rides ever invented.
Brian Sokoloski I remember waiting to be old enough to ride the Derby at the CNE. Best ride ever! To this day I love all rides, and x Sky diver out of Arthur Ont. But the Derby was my biggest thrill. Probably doesn't look like much to most viewers but it was large horses, powerful and fast back in the day. I think it goes back to 1950 at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition). Great memories.
That "park paint" on the horses is a disgraceful way to treat this treasure. These horses Charles Illions-carved each had a beautiful, air-brushed paint job and instead of spending the money necessary, they slapped on this awful park paint. This rarest of treasures should be respected.
What a shame that they applied "park paint" to these beautiful horses. This ride was installed in 1928, and is the only of the three surviving Derby Racers that has horses carved by the legendary Charles Illions. It's also the only one that runs fast. A few years ago they were beautifully painted in great detail, but the park decided to cut corners by painting them as simply as they could. I hope one day it is restored to its former beauty.
This one is a take on the one at Cedar Point in Ohio except the one in ohio has horses that look like racing horses ..... It also had a soundtrack playing like it was a real race.....
When my wife and I rode this about 1968, the horses heads dipped up and down jerkily and the ride was really fast. You definitely had to hold on tight and lean left. It was one scarey ride for me. My wife said it was like riding a horse. NO children were allowed on this ride.
I have been to Playland like 8 times and have never been on this but how is this ride safe? Seems to be a lack of restraints. I guess if you fall you just go with the rotating floor.
There are 0 restraints. Left foot on the lower peg, right foot on the upper peg and you have to lean your body to the left when the ride picks up speed. There is a hoop you hold on to.
I think THIS is the merry go round at Moscone center. The other one at Playland was across the street and all different colors and they LOOKED like Arabian horses. THESE look more like thoughobreds
Bruh… you don’t gotta be a buzzkill like everyone else. They should be allowed to do this how they want unless there’s a real reason aside from “not professional”
That's actually one of the memories I had when I first rode this back in '86. I couldn't help but be in awe as the guys hopped on and off. I was just holding on for dear life on the horse.
