Ryobi Drain Auger Review P4001 18V One+ 

I've lived in this house 20 years and I have to clean out my shower or sink drain about once every four months. I had a Rigid auger that would connect to a drill. The amount of squeezing it took to make it feed was insane! When I saw the Ryobi in the store, I knew I had found its replacement tool. With the feed lock in place - ONE-HANDED operation!!! Worth every penny!!! I watched your review to see if there were any special tricks, but it is easy as you show. And something as simple as using a towellette to clean off the snake as it comes back - thanks a bunch!. Cannot believe I didn't think of that one! I used to dread snaking the drain only a little less and paying a plumber to do it. Now it's almost easy. That's what power tools are supposed to do - make your life easier. Thanks to you for the review and thanks to Ryobi!

Thanks so much for this review! I was on the fence about calling a pro$$ out to my house or buying another tool and possibly still not getting the job done. Your precise description of how the various functions on the auger sold me on it. That combined with the fact that I already owned many of the other Ryobi tools/batts/chargers! Your presentation of how to operate the unit was so well done, that once I unboxed it I never looked for an included manual and went right into unclogging my drain. I didn't use a stopwatch but I think it was about 5 minutes from start to finish with the finish being the few feet of water instantly disappearing! I have an open drain at the base of my 2-ton A/C for the condensation. It had clogged 5 foot down at the foundation level. Past minor leaks now confirm it was a buildup in progress, that finally stopped all drainage. It had overflowed and dumped gallons into my garage and kitchen. At least it was some of the cleanest water you can encounter. I'm expecting this tool to sit on my shelf for years till next clog. So it's nice that the multi-tool battery system of Ryobi will not disappoint me when I pull it off the shelf in 5, 10, 20 years from now. It's my first clog in this house in 25 years.

Bought it yesterday as I have the other 18v Ryobi tools and unclogged a bathtub drain just like you showed. Drain never has worked properly in 7 years I have owned my house. Used liquid plumber and plunger etc and would get drain somewhat open but this cleared out a clog that I had never reached. Was able to drain the whole tub from full in 2 minutes 45 seconds when before it was filling with water just taking a five minute shower and draining slowly. Well worth the $70.

Just ran down to the box store with minutes before they closed to pick one of these up upon your review only to find my battery at home needed a charge. I am looking forward to cleaning up my tub drain. I am still trying to talk my wife into going with a hair cut like yours as an alternative.

I already have one, and I agree that it will pay for itself in one use, even if you have to get a battery and charger. I just pulled it out and needed a refresher on how to use it. Your video is much easier to understand than the instructions. I also realized that it's much easier to let the auger pull the snake out instead of doing it yourself, which will fling nasty drain water all over your bathroom. Thanks!

I'm actually a licensed plumber and use the professional version of this type of auger nearly every day at work...I don't actually own a small auger myself, because they are very pricey for a decent one. I actually have a crappy one like the one you showed for use at home and they are a major PITA! I'm a big fan of Ryobi 18V tools and have many of them and I'm most definitely getting one of these! It looks to be pretty well designed and my experience with Ryobi has been good so far...I've never had an issue with their drills, saws, grinder, etc, so I have no doubt their usual quality is there with this tool. Now realistically, I doubt it would hold up to what I put augers through at work, but it's not meant for that kind of heavy use. Like all of the rest of their 18V line, it's made for the home owner, not for going into business unclogging drains. For what I will use this for at home, I'm sure it will be just fine. My question is...can you see how easily the cable is removed and replaced if/when it gets damaged? I know from experience they can get caught in drains and damaged fairly easily, and that's on the heavier duty machines like I use at work. BTW...for those worrying about keeping a machine like this clean...forget it! You can try, but drain cleaning machines are traditionally dirty nasty pieces of equipment...at least on the inside. Just store it in your garage, or shed, somewhere that smells won't bother you...it's nearly impossible to keep gross stuff from building up in the drum of a machine like this.

That is awesome.I love Ryobi powertools.They are good quality for a reasonable price.Im thinking about buying this drain cleaner because I already own other Ryobi tools and have extra batteries for it.The only thing that is causing me to hesitate is the 25ft cable length.I wish it were longer.

Good video. Glad you mentioned the plastic rod inside the line, or whatever the rod is made of. I couldn't make that out from the pictures that I've seen online, so that is another nice selling point. My other cheaper auger didn't have that. It's pretty much unusable now.

Thanks for the great review. The tool costs $181 total if you don't have any Ryobi tools with ion batteries and wireless chargers. I still think it's a great investment.

I started out with a ridged auger that hooked to a drill.. cost me something like 40 bucks.. broke in two uses.. cable line snapped right outta the housing.. got this ryobi auger and havent had a problem yet... really easy and good tool to have for smaller jobs... roto rooter gets $200 easily per call.. im not calling them...

Do NOT get a screen to catch hair! Had a tub that, despite having an insert to catch hair, would get clogged from time to time and was an hour or two, back-breaking, nightmare to snake. After the second or third time, it occurred to me that the screen might actually be *CAUSING* the clog rather than preventing them because slowing down the flow of water might make it easier for hair to catch and accumulate than if the flow was full speed. So, as an experiment, I took the insert out and didn't have to snake it again for the year or two I lived there.

Javier, gloves and a rag are co-requisites with that auger. Take a look at what the real plumbers do. They use a rag to wipe off the gunk as they feed the line back in to the drum.

Dumb question, but how can you tell you reached a clog? I pass the clog but unable to tell or feel the resistence to lock it and break it up

Ryobi has come along way to keep up with mayor brands. I think they even have more cordless and cooler tools than mayor brands.

I bought one of these and it worked for my blockage, but I'm kind of pissed that Ryobi did not design the coil tip to be removable, so you can swap it out with a cutter tip.

The demo was very helpful, thanks. The GOOD NEWS: this RYOBI AUGER cleared the tub drain - the clog was more than five feet out. The BAD NEWS now to auger cable is stuck in the drain! It retracted only guessing two feet. ANY ADVISE how to now not pay a plumber to get the cable out?

Thanks for the review, great video. This may be a dumb question to most, but how to you know when to stop feeding the cable down the pipe? Are you supposed to feed all of the cable, or should you feel the cable stop/hit whatever is clogging the pipe?

How do you clean it? It seems like the drum where the cable is stored would eventually become a cesspool.

I wished they have a 50' version, I returned mine after it didn't do the trick, suspect didn't reach the clog.

I see these advertised at Home Depot for about $ 130. I also see on Amazon where some say "Slightly Used" Selling for $79. Anyone know why so many are selling used? Do they not work? Is the cable too short?
