Glad it helped. I've been meaning to make an updated video going into a lot more depth about the idle down systems but I haven't been able to find one cheap. I picked up an idle down unit but it was a Troy-Bilt w/ a briggs and it seems this Ryobi w/ the Honda GCV is a lot more popular unit.

My main issue seemed to be the idle down cable sleeve being too far to the right. I moved it all the way left where the coils were completely covered by the plastic sleeve and it at least works (it idles and occasionally surges, but at least it keeps idling to where when I release the spray nozzle handle it doesn't die anymore). Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

I learned a lot watching your video. Thank you. My Ryobi PW is the same except the idle control assembly is bolted on (no U clip). I'm having no luck getting the cable to move freely. And the ICA is not available for this model. So I might just hook the idle control spring to a spot I found for a regular governor mechanism. It's under the bracket where spring was made to go.
@gssmith1986
@gssmith1986 2 года назад
I've got the same PW and had the same problem. The first thing you need to check is anchor point for that idle down cable sleeve. Ryobi uses a cheap plastic cable anchor with a bolt into more plastic. I pulled & lubed the cable and spring valve thingy but it was moving pretty easily already. Started and same problem. I moved the cable clamp 3 coils closer the end of the sleeve and the problem was solved.

To remove the idle down cable on the engine end,, you actually don't need to remove the carb or the air cleaner housing. Underside, you can remove the two mounting bolts that hold the bracket in place (Cable clamp end) un hook the spring and you are good to go.

I have the same exact issue with mine. I had it sitting for 2 years. I did all of the maintenance on it. Oil change, new spark plug, new fuel, new air filter, and a new carburetor. At first I couldn't get it to start at all but after replacing the carb it starts but it's rough. As soon as I let the trigger go, it turns off immediately. I never even looked into this cable. If I unhook it to disable it, will this cause issues down the line? If so, I'll just look into cleaning it and lubing it like you did or I'll replace the cable with a new one.
@jamesbubnick
@jamesbubnick 2 года назад
Unhooking it won’t cause any issues. In fact on those homeowner models some people zip tie the handles so that way they never let the pump run in bypass mode, building heat and potentially melting the valves. One trick I’ve learned is getting a motorcycle cable lubricator that way the penetrating oil is forced into the cable. I’m not a bit fan of the idle down feature. I don’t see how it could save much fuel and the potential trouble isn’t worth the hassle.

@@ort619 it could be the carb is dirty if it just pops off then dies. If it sounds like the motor is struggling under load it might be the unloader needs adjustment. An oem carb is less then $30, usually I can get them running maybe a bit if surging but they will run after a cleaning. When cleaning you realy have to take out the jet and emulsion tube otherwise you’ll never get them clean enough.

Hey James, I have a honda 200 dewalt 3300 psi washer which has a similar idle down cable setup. My problem is that the idle down isn't working. I have disassembled the whole assembly and lubed the cable and punger. It all seems to be moving freely. I am wondering if mine is out of adjustment. Is there any videos that show how to adjust the assembly for the appropriate pressure to idle down at? I assume the machine should idle down when the head pressure goes to its peak when the wand isn't being used and should raise the rpm when the head pressure drops because the wand is open releasing pressure. Is this thought process correct? In one of your videos you said it idles down when the head pressure goes down but I think its the opposite. Any help would be appreciated.
@jamesbubnick
@jamesbubnick 3 месяца назад
Hey, So I don't have any videos or know of any posted where it goes into an explanation of adjusting the system. I've been meaning to make 2 other videos on this series of pressure washer. One of how to disable/remove this system then put on a non-idle style pump and the other video of how the system works, what to look for etc. I haven't picked up one of these in a while but when I do I'll post those videos. As for the actual useful ness of the feature...it's pretty useless. On these style pressure washers it's not recommended to let them sit idling/building pressure w/o pulling the trigger. The water going through the pump cools the pump head and when you're not pulling the trigger the water is cycling through the head, building heat, and eventually will melt the valves/damage the seals. Most manuals says not to let the unit run w/o squeezing the trigger more then 1-5 minutes. Yes w/ idle down the motor runs slower and less energy, less heat is put into the pump head but I'm not going to test how long an idle down pump lasts before the valves melt. ;). I've picked up quite a few pumps w/ melted valves. Lots of people don't realize you always need water flowing through the pump. Also make sure to never run the unit without water. I've picked up a few where they ran it out of gas at the end of the year but didn't have a hose hooked up to it and destroyed the seals. You can adjust the idle down, there should be a clamp that you can move on the plastic coated cable a little before the z-bend that it fits into the governor arm. Maybe yours loosed up? As long as your unit is running fine at pressure/at throttle I wouldn't mess w/ the idle down. Sometimes it's better left alone. On this model the idle down is activated off of the unloader. Once you let off the guns trigger the unloader goes into bypass mode and water cycles in the pump head. The entire unit is still pressurized but it hits the max pressure and stops building more. The idle down spring senses the pressure difference and moves the cable to idle the throttle. I had a few cat pumps off ridged pressure washers w/ idle down and those were activated by taking pressure right off a valve access cap. Hope this info helps. Sorry if it's a bit confusing.

I can’t get the idle cable thing out of the pump side. Took that pin out and twist it with pliers but it just won’t pull out it’s so tight. Maybe having that water on and pressure behind it helped it come out? Any other idea on getting it out all I’m doing is messing up that brass thing with pliers.
@jamesbubnick

Just keep pulling and eventually it will come out, the larger the pliers the easier it is to pull. Maybe hit it with some PB blaster. I'm not a fan of the idle down system, it only causes problems.

So I have the exact same pw and the idle down is also giving me problems. It doesn't stall on me most of the time but, it idles real erratically when the trigger isn't being pulled. What I mean is it doesn't idle consistently whatsoever. Up down up down up down until I pull the trigger. It also idles real rough, like it shakes a lot more than it should and it's also louder. It shook 1 mounting bolt off and 2 were loose. I replaced air filter and spark plug bc they were cheap so, why not. Now about to do an oil change today and may have to do some of what you did in the video. Maybe remove/clean the carb and possibly check out the idle down cable that goes to the pump. Got any tips or advice? Thanks for the help and thanks for the video.
@jamesbubnick
@jamesbubnick 2 года назад
I'd clean the carb, if it's sharking and louder it could be a pump issue but I have a feeling the carb is dirty, not running right so that's giving you all your simptoms. OEM Honda carbs are pretty cheap on this motor if you need one...I want to say 22-25 bucks shipped.

@@jamesbubnick okay, great. Cleaning the carb was my first instinct as well after some basic maintenance so, hopefully that does the trick. @@bigboss-yv2nr I gotcha, when it fell it could have bent one of the rods enough so it sticks, bent the governor control arm-they are pretty flimsy, knocked the adjustment on the aisle down feature, etc....if it's running like it normally did on high throttle I wouldn't worry about it. So, after changing the cracked (almost all the way through) exhaust rocker arm and bringing the valve lash into spec..., I thoroughly cleaned the cheapest Honda carb I've ever seen and owned thinking I might even have a cheap aftermarket POS..., then I was like why is it running lean on choke and not at all off choke (maybe still carb and replacing with the original first designs that you can actually get to all the parts to clean and adjust) had me wondering.... spark arrester wasn't present, unloader valve was removed and thoroughly cleaned and lubed which wasn't bad to begin with and then I was like what is this idle down thing. So I started up again with water running in the pump and was like why not move the governor arm to see what the effect is and then was like... ah hah... the idle down wasn't pulled on the bottom to throttle correctly. I just removed, cleaned and silicone 3 in 1 lubed and wanted to verify the disc in the idle down mechanism goes first and then the spring since seems counter intuitive to me for now. I'll replace and see what the effect is. I was thinking the same... either will remove the idle down mechanism from the governor and adjust the governor to run without since that will need to be moved to the correct position or... see what the cleaned and adjusted back further idle down cable mechanism does. Wow... has this been an interesting most challenging design that I see frustrates many people. Figure I'll work my way through and see what she can do. Though I am tempted to get a OEM original design carb to better be able to clean and maintain for the long haul since the engine seems good like the pump. Just those wonky controls I've never seen or used before.
