I started posting videos when Covid happened as a side hobby. I've always liked repairing things and wanted to give back to the RU-vid community as I've learned a lot by watching videos.
I've worked on a variety of projects as an engineer ranging form Commercial Aviation, Global product launches, and EV's.

If your Scag still has the metal tag by the transmission it will tell you the model/serial and you can download the manual and find the part number on Scag’s website. I don’t know the part number off the top of my head.
It’s called a flywheel key. I’m Not sure if that one is imperial or metric but ace/tru value hardware usually carry them in the nuts and bolts section. You have to buy the correct right fitting one…if you don’t the flywheel will sheer it right off. If you can’t find it locally I like to order parts from Parts Tree
First, thank you for your time. However, your video would be enormously more helpful if you were in frame. I know you believe most people know what they’re doing, but we don’t, or we wouldn’t be searching for RU-vid videos on HOW TO repair a pressure washer pump.
I hate this brand, it is the only brand Costco carry nowadays. It has problem starting the very first time. Connection checked good. Supply water on, checked good, purge the wand, engine turn on, fuel line turn on, and choker position. Still won’t start. Customer service open on week days only. Smh
From what I've seen from people on Reddits Ebike forums, Vee tires seem to have lots of issues with cracking, even when new. I'd recommend getting different tires from another company rather than asking REI to replace them with the same tires again.
REI ended up replacing the tires w/ Schwalbe and so far those seem a lot better. The reviews for Schwalbe are better and as of a few weeks no dry rot. What's crazy is I picked up a 5 year old Specialized that was stored on a balcony (very rusty, chain 100% not moving) for its entire life and those tires had zero dry rot on them so I'm going to say REI went with a really cheap tire that they shouldn't have. I'm pretty handy and could replace these on my own but if someone doesn't...I'm sure it would be around at least $100 to have it done at a local bike shop.
Great video James. This was the same issue I was having with mine; and with your video I was able to fix it. It was good seeing you cover all your bases and clean out the carburetor too.
Glad it helped. I've been meaning to make an updated video going into a lot more depth about the idle down systems but I haven't been able to find one cheap. I picked up an idle down unit but it was a Troy-Bilt w/ a briggs and it seems this Ryobi w/ the Honda GCV is a lot more popular unit.
It's crazy how something small make a piece of equipment not run right. I think too many people automatically assume the transmission is bad when it could be quite a few other easy fixes.
I learned a lot watching your video. Thank you. My Ryobi PW is the same except the idle control assembly is bolted on (no U clip). I'm having no luck getting the cable to move freely. And the ICA is not available for this model. So I might just hook the idle control spring to a spot I found for a regular governor mechanism. It's under the bracket where spring was made to go.
Your scag is a prime example that good maintenance is the life blood of a machine. In 2005 I bought a used 48 hydro walk behind with about 800 hours, bought it for 1200 bucks. I used it for my mowing business 3 years with minimal issues. Sold it to a friend with the matching scag orange velke for 1500. I recently ordered a new 36 swzt hydro drive for my new house, and of course will be installing a wright velke sulky
That makes a huge difference...yesterday I picked up a pressure washer that wouldn't start...dropped the bowl and it was all water. By me it's difficult to find ethanol free fuel so for winter storage I'll run a bit of true fuel in everything.
you can take the airfilter cover off the squit some in, however, prefer to take the breather tub off since it's rubber and take a second to pull off and put back on.
@@jamesbubnick Try removing the scale lock screw ? Im interested……Amazon I heard is much better than eBay at removing counterfeit items which is a real shame because I always had liked them.
I think it depends how you buy it…..I want to say the service kits from Home Depot/Lowe’s include both but if you order from a parts store you have to order them separately. Thanks for watching.
@jamesbubnick well I'm just saying from my experience in buying one from home depot and another from a local dealer and neither of them came with the pre filter. I ordered new ones from Amazon and they had them.
@@JoeWisniewski-hd7bv I gotcha, I’ve had pretty good luck with aftermarket airfilters and some of the oem ones are insanely expensive. I tend to buy multipacks since I go through a lot. I needed an old briggs 2 hp airfilter/precleaner…an aftermarket one doesn’t exist and the oem was almost $30!!!
I just bought this at Costco today. I have been looking at videos for a while and because Costco had the 80v 21” lawn mower gem 2 with 1 4ah, and 1 2ah battery, I decided to pull the trigger on it. It was priced at $499 and came with an extra blade. I had really tall grass. I’m on a .24 of an acre and I was able to get through the whole lawn with both batteries.
I need a ride mower I only use a push mower in a very big yard and I would love if anyone that would love to help and I will pay full cash for it 🙂💰I love helping people very much
Hi, thanks for the video. Is the idle down cable supposed to move freely once removed? Mine seems stuck but it could function with pressure which might be the reason why it doesn't move freely. Thanks again!
It is spring loaded and it won’t move just buy pushing/pulling by hand. If you take the unloader apart to clean/lube then the idle down cable should move freely since it won’t be under tension.
The metal pistons aren’t something you replace. On higher end pumps the pistons are ceramic and replaceable but if your metal pistons are damaged it’s not worth the repair.
Hmm not realy sure what you mean…the head was frozen up with deposits from sitting. I didn’t want to take the entire head away as this is the quicker and easier way to fix. Anyways thanks for watching and have a nice day.
When you finished the clip the arm was still not spinning freely, it spun but not properly,... You know you didn't fix the problem and that's what I came for. Mine has done about 3 hours work I've cleaned the nozzles, taken the arm off and cleaned that, it all seems to spin very freely with a good spray pattern but, just like yours a minute after you start to use it, it starts stalling again. I came here for an answer but see you're still having the same issue as me!
@@chrisday8038 i would check to see if the nozzles are partially blocked. Also you might want to reduce the orifice size on the nozzles on the bar or make sure they are sized for your pressure washer PSI and GPM. If yours has a adjustable unloader try turning up the pressure
I bought the washer with the patio head from Karcher UK as a refurbished unit, I did my patio last summer and it was amazing, I just took it out to use it again and it doesn't spin, same as the one in the video.
i bought a 3800psi dewalt. It was a return. The store manager told me that one guy came in the morning bought it and returned it late afternoon. He assumed he finished his job because his shoes were soaking wet. I think it was a 1000 pressure washer at the time. I got it for about 600. His excuse for returning it was to powerful
I'm surprised they took it as a return. It seems most gas powered equipment isn't returnable once you put gas in it, besides people using it to return a lot of repairs happen because of water in the gas, ethanol fuel. One of the best deals I got was I ordered a Simpson pressure washer from Amazon and it was non-returnable. it arrived damaged-the fuel tank was significantly dented in so I contacted customers service and they said since it was non-returnable dispose of it and they sent me a new one. The second one also arrived damaged...same exact damage to the fuel tank....they said if I keep it I'll get 50% off but the item would not be returnable and carry no warranty. I took the deal so I got 2 new Simpson pressure washers for 25% of the cost. Both worked just the tanks were smashed in and for something I bought new and paid full price for I wasn't going to let it slide w/o complaining.
@jamesbubnick homedepot has a no question return policy and people abuse it. I once bought a srhil chainsaw from Northern tool. I am certain the girl who sold it to me put straight gad in it. For one she didn't know what she was talking about. I told her the chain she was trying to sell me would not fit, but she was very certain it did. I was right the chain did not fit the bar. I had to go out and buy another elsewhere. The chainsaw also started to have problems starting after on the first gas that was put my northern tool. It would die out and eventually went dead so I lost $600. Bought it to the store and said they weren't responsible they even charge me to diagnose the problem.
I’m stuck in the same spot where I have the clutched dropped and out of the way. I’ve located the 4 bolts for the motor you are describing but I am not understanding 2 things. 1 how is taking the 4 bolts out for the motor going to give me any wiggle room for the belt to squeeze off around the tabs as the motor is already sitting at its lowest point? Also on my mower the back right bolt is obstructed by the steering did you have to take all that off to access the bolt?
When you loosen up the 4 motor mount bolts you can side the engine back around a half inch and it gives you enough room to slip the belt off between the 3 guides. You can also bend those guides out, slip the belt off then slip the new belt on then hammer them back into place. This won’t drop the pulley at all, every unit I’ve gotten with an electric clutch had the pulley rusted on, but in the units with manual clutches the pulley has been free to pull off. As for the bolt obstructed…if you turn the steering the rods will move and give you access to the bolt.
I flipped the head so it doesn't touch the tube. Some leftover automobile door edge protection stuff got added to the bottom for protection and grip on the concrete floor in my mancave/workshop so I'm good and love the pump so far. I go from fat bikes to 27.5+ eMTBs to long travel trail 29ers & my monster Kona gravel bike 👍🏻
That's a good idea. I have lots of automotive foam left over from sample boxes I can add to the pump. Overall I really like the pump and it's the one I'll use/scrach/don't worry about. I haven't been able to find out...but does this one also have the leather washer? I looked at taking the top off but it looks like it's snapped in and I figured It's not worth potentially breaking a new pump just to check.
@@shafiqjan1474 it could…I’m familiar with the old style Silca pumps before they were purchased by the American guy. I probably won’t touch it until it gives me issues which should be years anyways.
Thank you, my small o-ring fell out too (11:00), how stupid. I have no idea what that even does it leads to channels that drain out the bottom of the pump/gearbox interface.
Hi James! iIt's a good thing i saw your video! But i am not sure if you will see my comment as your video was made a year ago. Anyway, i just bought one like this for $200. Unfortunately, keys are missing. i just dont know how to go around this. i am trying to look for replacing the locks, but i am not sure if there is something out there that is compatible as the lock is connected to 3 latches!. oh geez! lol
I'd probably ask the seller...or if they sold it without keys....I'm not sure if the lock cores are replaceable like on Thule/Yakima racks or not. I'd check out the locks face...if there are numbers on it it might be an easy find, just search for getting a key cut or buying that number key. That's what I did for a VW roof rack with a similar issue. One last step is if the box has a serial go to a Mercedes dealership and they might be able to look up the key/lock by part/serial number. Also if all fails call up a locksmith. When I lived in Bloomington we had a great locksmith nearby. They were expensive but could fix just about any issue.
@@jamesbubnick Thanks man! i was able to order online. i just found out on these locks, you will see numbers in front of the key hole. There are companies where you can order online a copy of the exact key. Mine just cost me $8 including shipping. : )
so I have this same pump my issue is I have great pressure and the unloader works fine adjustment-wise wise but it won't release pressure when I disengage the wand trigger..any idea what that is???
Sounds like a stuck unloader. You’d need to take it out, apart, clean and re-lube it. I’d take the entire thing apart and clean it on a wire wheel and seemed to make sure any corrosion is cleaned out then ready-lube with lithium grease
I’ve switched the pto a few time but the last time I I messed up. The wiring was loose and got frayed, I’d check for that and also the pto has an air gap, and might need adjustment. If not pro’s are expensive and can turn a good deal into a bad one really quickly.
@@jamesbubnick for sure, you never really know how much is wrong with it after extended use. I had a guy look at it and he re soldered the wires that were burnt out but I'm still having the same issue. Ordered a new blade engage switch box hopefully that's the issue.
They ended up replacing the tires under warranty but pretty much said…this is a beginner bike with low end components and don’t store it outside at all. Kinda hard when the bike storage at work is outdoors. They said they’d replace the tires this time but won’t again. If the bike was this low end I’m wondering if there really is a difference between this and a department store bike…
Man that's crazy I just put gas in my car I don't know how you thought you'd buy a vehicle with lacking infrastructure and and what? Get good Deluxe deals?
I have both ev and ice vehicles and both serve their purpose. EV infrastructure isn’t that bad and is more a made up problem than a real problem for consumers. Most people have 2 cars and aren’t going to immediately switch to an ev. I’ve driven to around 40 states in ice vehicles and wouldn’t do the same trips with my ev but I know people who have crossed the country in EV’s and made it. One of my contacts even did it pulling his track mustang. Having level 2 at a hotel can make sense to me but having level 2 chargers at shopping centers doesn’t really. Level 2 is going to add 15-25 miles of range per hour of charge so it’s more for doing overnight or while at the office. The vehicle and operating costs for my use case is significantly less the. If I purchased the same price ice vehicle so I’m happy with it. I almost bought a rivian and dodged a bullet cancelling my order. Thanks for watching.
