To help with stress testing on OCCT I have uploaded this video to show both single core and multi core tests. This should help check for a stable undervolt. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-77zBduI09gY.html

You are LEGENDARY for this. I went down 10-14 degrees and my Cinebench score stayed the same but instead of throttling three times it chilled at 75-79 on like the sixth test. Had i tried that with normal settings it would be chilling at 90 halfway through the second go. For an open air case and 240mm aio I’m overjoyed. THANK YOU.

Excellent video! Just completed my 5800x build, and was shocked to see it shooting into the redzone in HWiNFO. 85c-to 90c, at stock clocks while running Cinebench, even hitting 70c just installing games! Befuddling, especially, because I'm running a new EK AIO 360mm with Thermal Grizzly TIM.. Short of a custom open loop, just about as good as it gets! So, naturally. I re-seated the waterblock, twice. Same result... Damn. But a quick browse, and I see I'm not alone. This tutorial has brought it to acceptable levels. Dropped a solid 10c across the board! Thanks!

I can totally agree with you, after I received my 5800x on launch and being shocked by the temps, I was looking for an solution soo long. I invested so much time on optimizing this hottie. I ended up using CTR 2.1 with 2 profiles. Today, I randomly looked up if there are new solutions and this is by far THE BEST video I‘ve ever seen. Im running 4,725 now on single core cinebench and 4,625 on all cores, hitting max 80 degrees. Thank you so much, i already lost all hope after CTR put my CPU into bronze category.

I had heat issues with my R7 5700X too (in a B550 Aorus Elite V2 mobo), got 90 degrees under Cinebench and it always throttled to 4,5 ghz under benchmarking, etc. These undervolt settings just made my cpu so much better, that i seriously can't believe. Under Cinebench now, it barely goes over 75-77 degrees, and it's sitting now stable on 4,8ghz, during the 10 minutes throttling test, man, it's just fckn unbelievable!! I literally dropped 10 degrees overall and got better performance by applying your final settings!! Cinebench went from 14261 to 14584 on multicore test, max power draw during benchmark went from 142.26w to 120.20w and the CPU package temps went from 80.5° to 71.5° during the benchmark. The overall clock speeds got also higher! All cores were hitting over 4800mHz while before at least 3 of the cores were staying bellow 4800mHz! The Idle power draw went from 46w to 44w with temps going from ~50,55° idle to ~40,45° when browsing with chrome. If I kill all background apps and system tray processes, my idle temp can dip below 40°!!! I haven't even played around with the settings to find my own values. THAT'S INSANE!!! Words can not express how much of a blessing this guide was. The 5800x has been a thorn in my side since I bought it. My idle temps ranged from 40C - 60C, it was thermal throttling in cinebench, gamed around +80C, and my AIO sounded like it was blasting off into orbit all the time. I was beginning to think I got a lemon, it probably is, lol. These were my scores in cinebench before the tweaks(best run without obvious throttling): 15180 multi-core / max temp 87C 1599 single-core / max temp 68C And after: 15424 (+/-50) multi-core / max temp 71C 1595 single-core / max temp 58C(only did one pass since single core takes so long to render) These worked best for me, but I might play around with the PPT limit a little more in the future (I'm also using a MSI motherboard if that means anything to anyone): PPT limit (W) 125 TDC limit (A) 85 EDC (A) 130 curve magnitude 30 If you're having a hard time finding these look for the PBO settings (Precision Boost Overdrive) should be in the AMD CPU overclocking options. Pro tip: you can make changes to the PPT, TDC, and EDC while in windows through Ryzen Master while you're testing. Unfortunately, I didn't see an option to adjust the curve magnitude outside of bios, you still have to plug them into bios once you've found your sweet spot. Also, I fired up BF2042 the heaviest game on the CPU I've got and that never went above 72C after two matches. I can also idle in the 30s now. **A (not so) Quick Update, I figured out what accounted for 50% of my temperature loss. I'm new to AIOs and my bios won't save my pump speed so I needed a program to set it in Windows. (I later realized it wasn't how long the water stayed in the rad but that the pumps default speed was so low it caused the pump to misbehave. The faster the pump runs the cooler it'll make the component.) Of course, I didn't notice the affect at the time, because like an idiot, I changed it on a whim while changing multiple settings at the same time. Figured I should share this in case someone reading has a similar situation it's something else you can check instead of just kneecapping your performance if it's a contributor. I think it's also important to note what PPT, TDC, and EDC are to make your tuning process go a little smoother. If your goal is to lower your temps under load TDC is the value you should lower first (it defaults at 95); under a sustained load during the ten minute multi-core run in cinebench will do. TDC governs the amount of power (current) used continuously under load. The EDC governs the total power (current) available for the chips boost, you don't have to set this below default (140) if you don't want to. PPT determents the total power (wattage) available to I think just the cores but it could be the whole chip. You also don't have to lower this below its default (142). In summery, just lower PPT and EDC after you set the TDC to your liking, in increments of 5 until your average frequency drops and step it to a number just above. Doing this in Ryzen Master will save you a TON of time. Literally, after learning the layout tuning with Ryzen Master will take less than ten minutes. So much for a "quick update", I just thought sharing this will let someone get everything squared away, instead of the days it took me to fully understand what compounded my thermal issue with a solution that's better than just kneecapping your performance.

@@hy0chan So I was doing some reading as to how water coolers work and my conclusion was wrong. The faster a water cooler can remove heat from the heat sink maters much more than how cool the water gets in the rad. I went into bios to check how low my fan curves were set because if the pump doesn't get enough voltage it won't function properly and I believe that may have been the culprit. The pump probably wasn't spinning fast enough at boot and with the slow voltage increase it wasn't able to run properly from the fan curve it was set at. There isn't a huge temperature difference between 50% to 100% when the pump is running properly, maybe 5C from what I've read, but it is quieter so I increased it to 65%. There's no reason to have it at or below 30%.

Just asking for any future updates, but have you had any stability issues in the prior months since you lowered the voltage? I heard others say that they've lowered their volts and got stable benchmark and stress test results, but once they do real-world tasks like web browsing or gaming, they experience crashes and BSOD's more frequently. I'd like to dial back the heat on my 5800x without losing performance, but I wouldn't want to introduce stability issues either.

Thank you for the easy to follow guide. Undervolting was 100% worth it and saved me about 160ish USD now that I'm not looking to buy an AIO anymore. An hour long Battlefield 2042 session @1440/144 ultra settings and I didn't even hit 80C. I'd say that's definitely a win. I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 (tower-fan) if that info helps anyone. Yea it's a bit unfortunate. The thermal-bottleneck here seems to be the CPU Die --> IHS. Adding more powerful cooling (also running a custom loop now) really didn't reduce my CPU temps by very much (though my GPU is much happier now~) Certainly not nearly as much as limiting my boost voltage.

Returning the chip to best buy? Lol, this is normal for the 5800x on stock settings, and it is within the safe limits. The 5900x, and the 10900k can get up to 100c while running benchmarks.

Umm I would want my CPU to last a very long time especially when I paid 400 dollars. Nobody is willing to run a CPU at 100°C let alone 90°C do you know how hot that is for a daily driver? I'm not going for a world record performance out of a chip and OC to that temp doesn't even provide enough power to justify that temp and you most definitely risk frying you CPU.

ODD question, I was looking at my clock speeds when playing a game with hwinfo and noticed it only went to 4.6 even with pbo on and asus performance enhancer on "OC", did your settings and while gaming I get a constant 4.8 or 4.825 now with way lower temps??? I'm so confused why this is so good and allows me to get higher clocks during gameplay. I have the same motherboard and an aio so temps never really mattered but I've never seen a 4.8 unless I was doing something other than gaming before this.

This is the way it was explained to me: The infinity fabric algorithms are designed so that if the chip sees it has thermal headroom the core frequency will clock higher. This is one of the reasons why overclocking can net users with worse performance because the thermal headroom in the chips is nearly maxed at the factory. It's kind of a joke that the 5800x is clocked as high as it is since it's design has the worst ability to transfer heat of all gen 3 ryzen.

Helpful video! I used your settings, but can only hit negative 10 on the curve optimizer or the PC crashes. Still, it reduced my temps from 91C to 80C while running Cinebench. Tho all-core boost is also a bit lower now at around 4.5 GHz, single core can hit 5.05 GHz on one core and 5 GHz on three more. AMD says that temps of 90C are "working as designed" tho.

Make sure to test single thread for cinebench as well. Lots of people get.instability from doing an all core negative offset since not all cores are equal, and some require more voltage to remain stable. For example, you could be fine with a negative 20+ offset for all core, but for single core, you may only be able to get away with negative 18.
@Andrew-cp7mc
@Andrew-cp7mc 2 года назад
That's very true in my testing - even when stress tests passed, the single core cinebench can fail. The only way to locate the core is to do a per core offset, in my case, I had to reduce from -25 to -20 for Core 0, as it was my 2nd best core.

Very helpful tutorial! Well done and many thanks! On my ASUS "ROG Strix B550A Gaming" motherboard w/ the R7 5800X, I set the DOHCP (XMP) profile and applied the Curve Optimization method, per your video. I did note that there was no ALL CORE choice for the Curve Optimzation selection, so I left in AUTO and selected the NEGATIVE from the subordinate menu selection. It would not allow me to go above 25 (negative), so the targeted 30 seems to be off the table. In any event, I went a more conservative PPT 120/TDC 75/EDC 130 for the other settings under Manual PBO Limits. Seems that with a dual 120mm SNOWMAN (6x6mm) air cooler, temps max at 80C with 25C ambient, which is fine. CB R23 all core topped out at 14,150pts and system is stable. I suppose I could up the cooling solution with an AIO to further improve CBR23 performance, but the current performance is OK for our use case. Again, many thanks!
