In terms of explosive, powerful deadlifts: There was a video from the warmup room of the "backyard meet of the century" at ST Gym where you can see the Lilliebridges, Dan Green, Stan Efferding, Pete Rubish and others do nasty things to a barbell. That was great to watch before a deadlift session. Sadly cannot find it on YT, anymore. (The squat one is still there but it just ain't the same)

I don't get the gatekeeping of rounding your back behind some arbitrary max, if it's more advantageous for someone why not simply build it up from lower weight and adapt to it. Some straight back puller going round at 250 and not before sounds suboptimal.

If i could add 1 person i would have to say: Mikhail Shivlyakov Every deadlift you see in competition is just an absolute spectical. Especialy his ""Misha Shivlyakov Attempts the Masters Deadlift World Record"" (didnt want to put in a link to some other youtube channel, google that) its just beautifull, saving that deadlift was just absolutely insane, it goes down a little so many times and he just manages to get it...

I’ve heard some of really good powerlifters say that in some ways having a rounded upper back is more optimal as long as the back stays in the same rounded position through the lift. Then the bar technically can travel less distance

Depends on your strengths and weaknesses. If you’re weak off the ground a rounded back can help you if you’re able to maintain the same position until lockout. There are also plenty of videos and papers on how it’s not any more dangerous as long as you aren’t letting it round more on the way up when you pull with a rounded back, specifically rounded thoracic spine. I prefer a rounded back sumo because it helps with sumos weakness(difficulty off the floor) but allows you to be upright enough to not lose starting position as easy and also makes lockout easier than the same angle with a conventional deadlift. Also I’ve never had a back injury in the 8 years I’ve been doing round back deadlifts for anyone wondering

Wait so what's bad about having a rounded back? I thought the research pointed towards back rounding leading to no additional injuries and that most injuries are likely due to improper loading/fatigue management. I also thought that at heavy loads the spine always has some degree of flexion and there's really no such thing as "neutral" spine (maybe I'm wrong on this). Or is it for a different reason, like looking at it from an efficiency standpoint? I'm a little confused, very curious to hear your thoughts.
@MellonVegan
@MellonVegan 2 года назад
Basically, it's an it depends. Rounded spine is alright, if it's stable. Overdo it or don't stabilise it properly and there will be issues. It can help with weight off the floor but be a hindrance at lockout, too. Really just depends. Some people make careers out of it, others do it for half a year and fuck up their backs.

I'm not a powerlifter so I don't deadlift, but am curious about your rounded upper back points: Stefi says the opposite ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pEYIYg7PYow.html in that upper back rounding is fine and while there is no need to deliberate do it, there is also no need to avoid it Why are you guys so against that?

I think they were approaching it more from coaching a beginner or deadlifting for WL purposes. You tell a beginner they can round there back and it quickly turns into catbacking weights that are too heavy for them

Totally missing the mark on the rOuNdEd BaCk Is BaD statement. It's been debunked so many times. How are you still holding onto this outdated notion? This is deadlift, not olympic lifts. Most top conventional pullers do it, and a lot of top sumo pullers do it. But besides that, it's totally fine regardless of your training experience or strength level - provided the upperback rounding doesn't get progressively worse as the bar moves up. If more people would film their deadlifts from a side angle, you'll realize how prevalent upperback rounding is.
